Fighting dog breeds: truth, myths and a little history

The topic of fighting dogs is so vast and controversial that there is enough material for more than one dissertation. Indeed, the term “fighting breeds” does not officially exist, but there are fighting dogs with an impressive pedigree and a dozen breeds purposefully bred for the blood sport. They are obliged to be loyal to a person, but then why are they recognized as more dangerous than others and how justified is this. Who is to blame and how governments of different countries are fighting them.

American Staffordshire Terrier

One of the most famous breeds of fighting dogs. His fame runs ahead of him. And all because Amstaffs can be both complacent, good-natured people and excellent companions, and warriors without fear or reproach.

The breed was bred to be a protector for the family, but his intelligence and physical attributes were slightly misjudged. Therefore, Staffordshire is a frequent participant in dog fights. The staff rushes at the enemy instantly, practically without barking or growling, and few will be able to stop him.

By the way, staff is great for keeping in an apartment. Medium size and short hair usually do not cause owners much trouble. Well, except that his mobility can sometimes be confusing: how can you move so quickly with such a physique?

Amstaff training is not for amateurs. And although there are cases when a dog understands its owner without words, training such a serious dog requires a special approach. He should not be treated roughly and anger should not be cultivated in his character. At the same time, it is quite difficult to piss off a Staffordshire, but if this happens, it will not seem like much.

The American Staffordshire Terrier will gladly take part in all games; it gets along well with children, but it is still not worth leaving it with a very small child.

From the history of the origin of strong dog breeds

Fighting dogs were among the first to enter human life. Since ancient times, people have bred large dogs with massive heads, strong jaws and powerful paws and used them to protect their homes from ill-wishers.

Fearless and strong dogs not only guarded the owner’s property, but also hunted large predators and took part in military campaigns.

For the sake of entertainment and profit, people regularly organized fights between dogs and, by betting, earned a lot of money. Particularly enterprising businessmen even opened schools that specialized in training gladiator dogs.

Today in many countries there is a ban on breeding and keeping dogs of strong and therefore dangerous breeds.
