The right places
To choose a truly Caucasian Shepherd puppy, you first need to determine where exactly you will buy it. Shops, bird markets, and just private advertisements in newspapers or the Internet - now you can find a bunch of offers for the sale of puppies. But they will not give any guarantee that your fluffy ball will definitely turn into a purebred Caucasian Shepherd Dog, and even physically and mentally healthy.
Therefore, do not be fooled by beautiful words and low prices, cast aside any doubts - feel free to start visiting specialized nurseries and official clubs. You can also visit exhibitions, where you always have the opportunity to communicate with breeders and get good advice from them on where you can choose a wonderful specimen of the Caucasian Shepherd breed.
Don't forget to check the breed standard. Especially if this is your first time encountering a Caucasian Shepherd. This knowledge will help you determine whether the puppy you choose fits certain parameters inherent in this particular breed. This is even more important if you are going to perform with your pet at exhibitions where judges thoroughly examine the participants.
Before visiting the kennel, make sure in advance that it is officially registered with the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF). A certificate of registration can only be obtained by a nursery whose owner has passed certification for permission to breed.
But choosing a nursery is only half the battle. Now you need to talk to the breeder. He should not only talk to you calmly, leaving a pleasant impression, but also competently answer all your questions. Ideally, the breeder should give you a tour of his “domain”, show you the closest relatives or parents of the offspring on which you have focused your attention.
Don’t be shy – ask the breeder in detail about the advantages and disadvantages of the puppy’s parents. In response, you should hear the truth, confirmed by the necessary documents: medical certificates, passed tests to determine articular dysplasia (Caucasian Shepherd dogs, due to their large mass, are prone to these diseases), pedigree.
There must be the necessary documents for each puppy: a birth certificate, a medical passport, a certificate of examination of the puppies for signs corresponding to the breed. All puppies approximately one month old must be branded or microchipped.
If the breeder refuses to provide such information, tries to evade direct answers, and does not provide all the documents, it means that he is trying to hide something from you. In this case, it is better to choose another place to purchase a Caucasian Shepherd puppy.
In addition to productive communication with the breeder, you need to carefully familiarize yourself with the conditions in which the puppies are kept. A separate spacious place should be allocated for the offspring (either a huge enclosure with a roof, or a fence and canopy), the total area of which is divided into sectors:
- for sleep and rest;
- for eating;
- for the toilet;
- for games and walks.
Everything must be kept clean, the toilet must be cleaned on time and be as dry as possible, the presence of toys is a big plus, which speaks of the caring attitude of the owner towards the offspring. Availability of clean water is a must. Try to wait until the moment they start feeding the puppies - a conscientious breeder will not skimp on either the quantity or quality of food.

First meeting
The psyche of a puppy
Now it's time to carefully examine the litter itself. Don't rush to choose, take a closer look at all the puppies. Listen to the advice of the breeder, who, knowing your preferences, will recommend a baby that suits you. After all, it is the first owner, like no one else, who knows his charges.
Remember that when choosing a future family member, you are unlikely to need the advice of your friends, especially inexperienced ones. For example, if a puppy sits in the corner and barks loudly from there, this does not mean that he will become a good guard. Just like it doesn’t mean that the first baby who comes running to you is fate. Perhaps the puppy sitting in the corner has mental disorders, and the quickly running baby will grow up too trusting.
In general, there is a quick test to check the nervous system in dogs. It is necessary to drop some small, loud object near the puppy, for example, house keys. If the baby was not afraid, but calmly approached an unfamiliar thing and began to sniff it, he has a normal psyche.
To determine whether a dog is aggressive, another test can be performed. To do this, turn the baby on his back and for some time do not let him return to his original position - on his paws. A puppy with a stable psyche will not growl, bite, or, conversely, react sluggishly. He will struggle hard and try to get out from under your hand.
Ideally, the puppy you choose should rejoice in your presence, stretch out its paws for acquaintance, and bring you its toys. Intelligence, confidence and kindness should shine in his eyes. In general, a puppy that can demonstrate its strengths is a great puppy.
Physical data
To determine that this is a Caucasian Shepherd puppy, especially a healthy one, you need to know what it looks like. First of all, take a closer look at how your chosen baby walks. He should have active movements, a slightly waddled gait. The limbs of a good dog do not move apart, but stand parallel to each other and quite wide.
Lameness, abruptness in movements, lethargy, imbalances in the structure of the body, too long and thin limbs - all these are signs of developmental disorders, hereditary or acquired diseases.
A Caucasian Shepherd puppy should have a powerful neck (a head sitting on the shoulders will never allow the dog to perform its working functions), a short and voluminous body, a straight line of a strong back, thick, physically developed paws, and a thick tail.
Be sure to pay attention to the puppy’s belly - it should be moderately tucked, without an umbilical hernia. A bloated belly can be a symptom of the presence of worms in the dog's body. You can also see how the baby goes to the toilet - whether his stool is normal, whether there is diarrhea or constipation.
Now it's time for a closer inspection. With the breeder's permission, pick up the chosen puppy and place it on your lap. Carefully palpate all accessible vertebrae for possible fractures.
The head of a Caucasian Shepherd puppy should be proportional to its body: voluminous, with pronounced cheekbones, a wide muzzle and a massive lower jaw. The forehead should not be too flat or too prominent. The fur on the frontal part can hide the true state of things, so it is best to feel the forehead.
Examine the dog's dental system - all teeth should be in an even row, close to each other and white. The mucous membranes of the oral cavity should be a healthy pink color. The bite can be either scissor or straight. Keep in mind that an overbite runs the risk of developing into an overbite over time. This risk may be associated either with heredity or with poor living conditions for the puppy.
The nose, eyelids, lips should be pure black, without any discharge. By the way, if a puppy has a large nose, it means that an adult will have a rather voluminous muzzle. The ears and almond-shaped eyes should also be clean and free of pus.
The dog's coat should be shiny and dense and rough to the touch. Soft or curly hairs indicate that they will remain that way in the future. And, most likely, this quality of wool will be passed on by inheritance. If you are going to breed purebred Caucasian Shepherds, then this fact can derail all your plans, as well as your pet’s exhibition career. Accordingly, for these purposes the puppy must have a standard coat color and slanted eye color.

Before adopting a dog from the kennel
Any pet with character and emotions. Call a friend who already has an animal if you have not interacted with animals. Relatives may have a negative attitude towards the decision to adopt a dog - convince them and get their consent. Walk the dog yourself, or arrange with relatives. Remember, the dog is usually walked 3 times a day. If you have children, they should be able to get along with animals. Teach them not to hurt your pet. The child should not touch the pet when she is eating or sleeping. You cannot scare or shout at the animal.
Giving for free is not always from the good heart
Today there are online platforms where they often offer to adopt a puppy for free or buy it.
The advertisements say that a litter of Caucasian Shepherd with a vaccinated pedigree is being given into good hands. The reason lies in the circumstances that have arisen, due to which the former owners are forced to part with him.
After reading such an announcement, the “dog owner” will be imbued with the most sincere respect and understanding for the donor and will rush to take the pet. But this can be too hasty a decision: behind kind unselfishness there may be a hidden illness or incorrigible bad habits of the puppy.
The first thing to do
Plan when you will take your dog for vaccinations. Bring toys for him to play with. Prepare a place and train your pet to this place. Necessary things:
- Dry food,
- clothes,
- Shampoo,
- Oral hygiene product,
- Brush (comb),
- Claw clipper.

Requirements for maintenance and feeding
Even if the shepherd is kept in an enclosure, it needs care no less than indoor dogs. The owner's responsibilities include caring for the pet's fur, eyes, ears, and preparing a balanced diet.
Rules of care
Caucasian Shepherds are relatively unpretentious in maintenance, but they require regular monitoring of their health and appearance. Care includes six parameters.
- Wool. The coat is combed twice a week. Use a brush or metal comb. During the period of active molting, use a slicker brush.
- Bathing. Domestic dogs are bathed no more than once every three weeks or as needed. Use shampoos with a moisturizing effect. In winter, the wool is dried with a hairdryer. Dogs living outside are periodically watered in hot summer weather to avoid overheating.
- Ears. Caucasian Shepherd dog ears are cropped by breeders on the third day after the puppy is born. If you do not plan to take the dog to shows, you can do without docking. The ears are periodically examined. Contaminants are removed with a cotton pad soaked in a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide.
- Eyes. Wipe with chamomile decoction, soaking a cotton swab in it. Timely removal of dirt prevents the development of inflammatory processes.
- Claws. Once a month the ends of the claws are trimmed. After winter walks, dogs' paws are washed thoroughly - salt causes cracks to form on the pads of the toes. After washing, the paws are dried and lubricated with vegetable oil.
- Teeth. Inspect and clean weekly using the finger attachment. Use special toothpaste. Periodically, the dog is given a little fresh tomato - the acid prevents the formation of tartar.
The Caucasian Shepherd is taught to perform hygiene procedures from an early age. The puppy must completely trust the owners and not show resistance. An adult dog that is not accustomed to hygiene will not allow you to brush its teeth or trim its nails.
The enclosure must be kept clean. Superficial cleaning is carried out daily, thorough cleaning is carried out once a week. Bowls are washed after each feeding, and care is taken to ensure that the dog always has clean water.
Nutritional Features
Compared to other large dog breeds, the Caucasian Shepherd has a moderate appetite.
Particular attention is paid to the nutrition of puppies up to one year old - active growth requires an increased amount of proteins, vitamins, and microelements. Dogs are not overfed - weight gain above acceptable values leads to increased stress on fragile joints
You can feed your Caucasian Shepherd dog with ready-made food or create a diet made from natural products. In the first case, choose premium or super-premium dry food for large breed dogs. When compiling a natural diet, adhere to the list of recommended and prohibited foods. It is shown in the table.
