About the breed

The Cane Corso dates back to ancient times, its origins being associated with traditions in the rural areas of Southern Italy and especially Puglia. This breed, long forgotten, has now been revived thanks to some experienced dog breeders who, with great patience and passion, managed to find and recreate the most typical individuals.

These are strong dogs, quite hardy and somewhat wild; they combine strength, harmony of forms with good mobility. There is nothing excessive about them and all areas of the body are of good proportions. Having avoided the risk of extinction, now this breed is not only saved, but also widely distributed not only in Italy. These dogs are especially needed as excellent watchdogs and property protectors, but you need to get to know them better in order to further appreciate them and raise and train them in the best possible way.

Name

Cane Corso means "fenced property dog." Indeed, corso, in other words, “belonging to the fence, yard,” is a word that speaks of the most important function of our dog, and by analogy, the function of a zealous and brave guardian of the property.

The word corso appears in written sources from the beginning of the 16th century, and from the very beginning it is closely associated with the purpose of hunting and protection. It is used by Teofilo Folengo (1491-1544), who in general terms describes the Cane Corso in a mortal fight with a bear or with a lion, wounded by a hunter, in this latter case the Cane Corso is quite interestingly contrasted with the Molosso (“canes inter seu corsos sive molossus” - lat. . - a dog, either a Corso or a Molosso). Some entomologists believe that the name should be associated with an ancient, Celtic or Provençal matrix, which would mean "strong", as evidenced by the surviving English adjective coarse, in other words, "coarse, simple" (as opposed to fine - "small, thin") .

Another hypothesis suggests as a basis the Latin noun cohors, or the Roman “coorte” - praetorian cohort; which would speak of the ancient function of a bodyguard, which was also entrusted to our dog.

Various hypotheses lead us, naturally, to morphological and especially functional themes, to which the historical arguments for the presence of dogs in various human communities ultimately boil down. Therefore, any such guesses end with people accepting one of them, for the sake of at least partial truth.

The choice of any dog must be approached very seriously; a dog is not a soft plush toy, but a living creature that requires proper attention and care. A potential owner of a Cane Corso dog should not forget about his financial and physical capabilities. Caring first of all about his own well-being, he simply must answer the following questions quite frankly: is there enough space in his house to accommodate a large animal without detriment to the family, does he have free time and is he ready to devote part of his time to working with a puppy? Cane Corso, and later with an adult dog. Most often, a person chooses a dog of a breed that matches his character. It is difficult to say why this happens; apparently, it is embedded somewhere on an intuitive level, in a person’s subconscious. It is important that the dog and its owner are on the same wavelength, only then can we talk about conquering the peaks in any business, both in the career growth of a “champion” and in any other work with a dog. In my understanding, a dog is, first of all, a member of the family. Therefore, when I chose a Cane Corso puppy, the main requirements for him were his understanding and adequate reaction to everything that happens around him. It was also very important for me that in the future the dog had good working qualities and had an attractive appearance, i.e. My Cane Corso was supposed to be a show class dog. In general, in my imagination I imagined the Cane Corso of my dreams as follows: appearance – a rather large and smooth-haired dog, smooth hair implies the absence or at least minimizing of problems with cleaning and caring for the coat; character – energetic, balanced. Friendly and affectionate towards its people, the Cane Corso is a devoted and faithful friend to them and at the same time a selfless guard. The Cane Corso is an easily trained dog, resistant to the Russian climate and has good health. As a result, based on my ideas about the ideal dog, I realized that my choice was right - this is a Cane Corso.

We must remember: Cane Corso dogs are not suitable for permanent living on the street. When you purchase a Cane Corso puppy, all family members should be happy about the appearance of a dog in the house. Cane Corso is truly virtually odorless. Cane Corso is best purchased from a reputable, well-known kennel. Don't waste your time waiting for a puppy from a worthy litter.

Distant Roots

To talk, even briefly, about the origins of the Cane Corso means inevitably delving into cynological concepts. Unraveling the trail of time, you see how centuries unravel in balls of wool, how memory is erased, and the records contain less and less detail and repeat one another.

One point should be noted. In the entire history of the dog, the current concept of breed did not exist, at least until the very end of the last century, and does not exist even now in rural areas. Typological differences have always strictly depended on functions and, therefore, selection has served to use the dog in various types of work.

The Corso retains the features of the dog of our ancestors, the protective deity, “by whom the universe still lives,” as Zarathustra boldly declared twenty-six centuries ago (Iran, 7th century BC). In his stern gaze, archetypes are visible, from Tibetan to Assyrian-Babylonian. His genus also includes Canis pugnax (Latin - fighting dog), which Lucius Junius Moderatus Columena (1st-2nd centuries BC) tells us about in “De re rustica” (Latin - About rural life) Rome from being destroyed in 168 BC. Macedonia, he also gives praise to parallel noble branches, among which are the Pugnaces Britanniae (British warriors), transported from Tire and Sidon to distant England by the ships of the brave Phoenicians.

Animal psychologists explained the reasons for the behavior of dogs left at home without owners. In their opinion, the pogroms and traces of vital activity throughout the apartment are not the result of exuberant joy, but manifestations of severe depression.
Often a dog left alone at home begins to play pranks - chewing things, crap, or eating food forgotten on the table. Despite the fact that, according to veterinarians, a mentally healthy dog should be calm when alone, more than half of English dogs have gone berserk and turned the house upside down at least once in their lives. Scientists decided to study the psyche of dogs prone to such pranks. 24 “guests” of pet hotels were selected for the experiment. Preliminary tests began 7-12 days after “check-in”; they made it possible to identify a “risk group”, especially playful dogs. The dog spent some time in the company of a person who “earned trust” in the animal, and then left. Based on the behavior of the dog after the disappearance of the person, scientists determined the animal’s propensity for mischief. The second experiment should be to prove the influence of the dog's mood on its behavior. It is known that animals in a bad mood often make “pessimistic” decisions, while optimists are always ready for difficulties. It turned out that all dogs from the “risk group” suffer from one or another type of depression or are simply in a bad mood. The animals performed tasks worse, showed signs of nervousness, and even moved slower than their counterparts in a good mood. This behavior did not depend on the age, gender or breed of the dog. Thus, scientists concluded that animals turn over their owners’ houses not at all out of joy and a sense of freedom, but because of melancholy, bad mood and self-doubt. This study may help to further help such animals, which in turn may lead to a reduction in the number of dog abandonments. In St. Petersburg, owners are offered to protect animals with muzzles. In St. Petersburg, the excesses of flayers continue - more and more dogs are dying due to poisonous baits scattered in walking areas. Veterinarians have called on St. Petersburg dog breeders to stop walking their pets without muzzles, which can protect dogs from swallowing poisoned food. The city veterinary department cannot yet influence the situation in other ways; according to experts, now responsibility for the lives of dogs lies only with their owners. It must be remembered that at the first signs of poisoning, the dog must be shown to a doctor for emergency assistance, and later you can contact the police and write an incident report. To date, several dozen dogs have already died in the city; owners of animals affected by poison contact city veterinary clinics every day. Zoo defenders are preparing an appeal to the city administration with a demand to find the attackers and bring them to justice. Let us remind you that several dozen dogs have already died in the city. Animals with symptoms of poisoning continue to be brought to city clinics. Zoo defenders are collecting signatures to send an appeal to the administration of St. Petersburg.

The mongrel saved the life of her owner by warming him with her warmth. Police from the Rostov region spent eight hours searching for a 12-year-old child who got lost in the forest. All this time, the child’s life was saved by a yard dog, who warmed him with its body. 12-year-old Nikita left his great-grandmother's yard with his favorite little mongrel on the morning of January 15th. The boy's grandmother and great-grandmother tried to find the child on their own, but after several unsuccessful attempts they turned to the police. They reported that the child suffers from cerebral palsy, walks poorly and hardly speaks, which means he cannot even ask passers-by for directions or seek help. The search for Nikita was carried out by the entire Semikarakorsk police force, as well as employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, administration and teachers from the local school. More than two hundred citizens also took part in the search, having learned about the incident from a news report. The child's traces were discovered in the evening - they led from the bank of the Don River into the forest. A police dog picked up the trail and confidently led the search group into the forest. The boy was found only at 11 o'clock. An exhausted child sat under a tree, clutching a trembling dog. According to doctors, only the warmth of his four-legged friend saved the boy from death in the cold

Breed standard

The Italian Cane Corso is a dog of impressive size and strong build. At the same time, her exterior looks elegant - long strong legs, protruding muscles.
