Purpose and features of holding dog shows for miniature spitz

What does a dog show give to a dog?

Everything is clear with owners of furry pets. But what benefits does such an event give to the animals themselves?

  • They are allowed to breed. Only after receiving an appropriate assessment from specialists can a Spitz officially participate in the development of the breed. I think that the dog owner will be pleased to know that his contribution has been made. Moreover, I consider it a real crime to hide from, so to speak, the public a wonderful representative of the Pomeranian Spitz breed.
  • Some dog owners are indignant that their favorite breed is not as popular as some other. Well, everything is in their hands! In fact, the more animals the exhibition attracts, the more publicity it receives and attracts spectators. Consequently, the prestige of the breed as a whole increases. Here is such a simple, but trouble-free scheme.
  • The Spitz is a pet that is extremely attached to its owner. Therefore, spending a few hours in his company, I assure you, will only be a joy for the furry miracle.
  • This active, cheerful dog needs good physical activity. Despite her miniature size, any training will be useful for her. The exhibition provides an opportunity to warm up.

What types of exhibitions are there?

I told you why you should attend such events, and now it’s time to talk about what they are like:

  • All-breed - why not take your pet to one if an exhibition specifically for Spitz is not expected in the near future? Each breed acquires its own candidate for champion. Accordingly, the jury selects two candidates - a boy and a girl. Such events can be all-Russian federal, regional or even international. As they say, for every taste.
  • Those owners who want their handsome Pomeranian to be exclusively in the company of his fellow tribesmen can choose a special breed exhibition. Yes, not every Spitz will enthusiastically accept the presence of large dogs nearby. In this case, I recommend paying attention to such a regional or national exhibition.

The classification can also be carried out according to a different principle. Namely, according to the nature of the event:

  • Breeding inspection - also called “appraisal”, “evaluation”. Conducted on the initiative of large nurseries. It is he who determines the development line of the breed and identifies the most promising representatives of the Pomeranian Spitz breed. I think there is no need to explain that such exhibitions are the most important. The dogs won’t have to work hard on them, but the jury will have to work hard. I assure you that this is where you can meet the best jury.
  • Demonstration show - but here you can’t do without careful preliminary preparation of the dog and its owner. In this case, the height at the withers will not have as much influence on the assessment as the quality of training. If you are attracted to this form of exhibition, I recommend actively training your dog from the age of a puppy.

You can even use the art of handling - the secrets of profitable presentation at exhibitions

Veterinary requirements

Each participant must have a VETERINARY PASSPORT with marks from the state veterinary clinic on vaccination against rabies, carried out no earlier than 30 days and no later than 1 year before the start of the exhibition. When receiving accompanying documents F-1 and F-4 for participation in a dog show, you may need to name the site in the Mercury system, the enterprise number in the registry and the enterprise number in the Cerberus IS - check the requirements with the organizer. In the absence of a veterinary passport, the veterinary control officer has every right not to allow the dog to participate in the exhibition.

How to prepare

So, the choice towards this or that exhibition has been made - now you can start preparing:

  • The Pomeranian Spitz loves to eat, and this is no secret, but on the day of an important event, I recommend refraining from heavy feeding. Otherwise, at the most crucial moment, some unpleasant surprise may happen, such as diarrhea or vomiting. I recommend something quickly digestible and in a small volume.
  • Plan your departure so that you arrive early. The fact is that latecomers are not allowed to the event, even if the dog is very promising. In addition, it is important to remember that the animal needs to get used to the unfamiliar place. It is important for the owner to find some secluded resting place for him.

Day X is approaching, how to prepare a Spitz?

Your representative of the show-class breed is healthy, in excellent shape, his fur is shining, his eyes are sparkling, and his loving owners have decided to show him to the world. First of all, I advise you to carefully study the information about the upcoming event so as not to miss important points in the preparations. Depending on age and level of training, dogs perform in different classes and show their skills to judges as part of the exhibition program for the specified class.

Any Spitz show is not complete without the following stages of preparation:

  • Washing before the exhibition. If the dog is dirty, you need to give it a good bath 2-3 days before the event. Before going to the bathroom, comb the coat thoroughly, then rinse with special attention, use shampoo and conditioner. It is better to use proven means to get good results. After washing, comb the wool thoroughly again. It is not worth bathing in less than 2 days, as the undercoat will not have time to dry. If your Pomeranian doesn't look dirty, experts recommend using dry shampoo and then brushing the coat. Be guided by the situation and appearance of the pet. If the exhibition takes place during the shedding period, after a bath the dog will shed hair for several days. If there is no shedding, then wash your Spitz. To decide for sure whether to wash it or not, experiment in advance - how the fur coat behaves after washing and dry shampoo, whether the dog loses hair or not, this is individual.
  • Combing. As I already said in the previous paragraph, you need to comb the hair before and after washing. Then, comb your dog again immediately before leaving the house or in the exhibition hall. Use a stiff, natural bristle brush. This will not damage or electrify the fur. Be prepared that this is a very labor-intensive process; comb every strand for a good result.

  • Grooming. It is better to entrust the procedure to professionals who know how to prepare a Spitz for an exhibition. Grooming is not just about cutting your Pomeranian's hair. This includes plucking hair in unnecessary places and giving an ideal shape to the ears and toes by trimming the fur on them. After a visit to an experienced groomer, the dog will look natural and impeccably neat. In full accordance with the breed.

  • Nail trimming. Don't forget to trim your pet's nails the day before the show. This is a normal grooming procedure; a Spitz show is not needed to monitor the condition of your dog’s claws. If this is your first time encountering this, purchase special scissors and a file and trim the claws without touching the pulp. That is, trim only the light part of the nail.
  • Teeth cleaning. In normal life, a Spitz needs to brush its teeth 3-4 times a week. If you follow this rule and the dog does not have plaque or tartar, brush your pet's teeth as usual the day before the show. If tartar has already formed, contact a specialist and your dog will undergo ultrasonic cleaning.
  • Ear cleaning. This procedure is also a regular one: wipe your ears with a damp cotton swab, then with a cotton swab inside, remove excess hair.

After all the manipulations to create beauty, carefully examine your pet; it should be clean, beautiful, well-groomed, but at the same time look natural.
