Puppy metrics: what is it, what does a sample look like?

Briefly about the concepts of “metrics” and “pedigree”

Before buying a puppy, the future pet owner should ask what the dog's metric is. It is the breeder's first official paper, which contains the data of the born baby, his breed, where and when he was born, coat color, nicknames and manufacturer documentation numbers.

The pedigree indicates the nature of the origin of the animal, contains all the information relating to the dog, but unlike the primary document, it contains the data of the baby’s parents and all relatives up to the third generation, their awards and titles.

If everything's alright

Let's now consider the ideal situation, when you have no reason to worry and all the necessary papers have been received along with the puppy. The metric includes information about your baby: name, breed, color, brand, date of birth, information about parents. The breeder and owner are also indicated. The club's seal and the dog handler's signature must be present. In this case, you receive confirmation that the puppy was obtained as a result of breeding and the club is ready to accept it as a legal representative of the breed.

RKF documents for a dog: what is it and how to do it

Puppies for all puppies from a litter are issued to the breeder by the international Russian Cynological Federation (RKF). The document is created for all babies from the litter. The only exceptions are puppies with congenital deformities. The brand is issued to the breeder for each kitten individually after all the entries in the primary document. It is tattooed on the baby dog's ear or on the inside of the thigh. Only after this the puppy is handed over to the owner of the litter.

Note! Documents for a puppy can be prepared much more easily in the Russian community SCOR, but the legality of the document of this organization is recognized only by the CIS countries.

How does the process of buying a puppy and issuing documents go?

If you do not know what documents are needed when purchasing a puppy, read the Breeding Regulations of the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF). From it you can find out the list of mandatory RKF documents for a dog and understand what it is, using specific examples.

According to the Breeding Regulations of the RKF, a written agreement for the purchase and sale of a dog in Russia is not mandatory. The price for a pet is negotiated verbally. But still, an agreement is desirable, since it can subsequently resolve unforeseen controversial issues.

To confirm the official registration of the mating, the date of birth of the puppy, breed and other important data, other papers are used, which will be discussed below.

When selling a puppy, the breeder is obliged to:

  • introduce the buyer to the entire litter and its mother;
  • demonstrate the conditions in which puppies are kept;
  • give comprehensive advice on the maintenance, feeding and characteristics of the breed;
  • if the breed is prone to any diseases, the breeder, at the buyer’s request, provides information that the puppies’ mother is healthy (certificates from a veterinarian, X-ray/ultrasound results, etc.);
  • sometimes such certificates are given regarding the father of the puppies;
  • issue a complete package of required documents and satisfy the client’s desire to draw up a purchase and sale agreement.

In addition, a conscientious breeder will be interested in the future fate of the puppy. At first, you can call him and consult about any questions you have. In some cases, the breeder will help you meet a suitable partner for mating or recommend participation in exhibitions.

Who draws up the pedigree

Pet class in a dog: what is it, what does breeding mean?

A puppy card gives permission to an animal to participate in exhibition championships, but in order to breed pedigree young animals, the dog must have a pedigree, which is issued on the basis of metrics.

To obtain a pedigree, you need to come in person or send documents (tear-off birth certificate) by mail to the Russian Cynological Federation, located in Moscow at st. Gostinichnaya, building 9. Document preparation services are also provided by kennel clubs for a fee.

Sample application to RKF

Patella

This form is issued subject to two conditions. Firstly, the dog must be registered in the All-Russian Unified Pedigree Book. Secondly, RKF documents for a dog confirming the absence of pathologies of the elbow joints are issued only after a detailed examination by a veterinarian. Moreover, such a specialist must have an FCI license and the right to evaluate.

This document is issued to representatives of giant breeds upon reaching eighteen months of age, and to dogs of small, large and medium breeds - upon reaching one year of age. In the RKF, documents confirming the absence of Patella pathology are issued within 15 working days from the date of the clinical examination.

The procedure for obtaining puppy registration

Even before the mating of the parents of the future puppies, for which metrics will be recorded in the future, occurs, the dog handler must obtain written permission from the club to produce offspring. Dogs participating in breeding undergo a documented inspection. The club is obliged to receive notification of the accomplished act.

A puppy is given to a newborn dog when it is 45 days old. It is issued on the basis of an application for registration, documentation from the parents of the puppies, written permission to produce offspring, and a club examination of the puppies.

It must indicate:

  • breeder's details, nursery address, contact phone number;
  • dog breed;
  • brand number, gender, coat color, dog's name;
  • details of the baby’s parents, their names, presence of a mark;
  • When a dog is rejected, its reason is indicated.

All data is entered in Russian and English via a computer.

Puppy's identification document

The document must be signed by the dog handler and certified with the club seal. You can see what a puppy’s metric is on the official website of the kennel or kennel club, where sample documents are posted.

Important! The certificate is issued to the breeder by the Russian Kynological Federation (RKF) fully completed and certified, and not as a blank form.

In addition to the main sheet with all the information, the document has a tear-off coupon that completely duplicates the data on the main sheet. When the puppy grows up, the tear-off coupon changes to a pedigree. If the metric is lost, a statement is written to the RKF that issued the document, and a duplicate is made.

conclusions

Puppy card (metric) - a certificate of birth of a puppy, about its compliance with the breed and its standards, about the quality of the parents, etc. The card can be issued by a kennel club or the owner of a kennel. RKF is a world organization, SKOR is listed within the CIS. If you have all the necessary documents and permits and pay the required fees, the procedure is quick and hassle-free. When receiving metrics, be sure to check the document for compliance with the data; errors are not allowed and require immediate correction.

How much does it cost to replace a metric with a pedigree?

The cost of replacing a metric with a pedigree depends on the processing time (the faster, the more expensive), and on the type of documentation. Pedigree can be:

  • Domestic – allows participation in exhibition championships and breeding only on the territory of the Russian Federation, issued in Russian.
  • Export – allows participation in exhibition championships not only in the Russian Federation, but also abroad, issued in English. Issued on the basis of a dog certificate in Russian.

Additional Information. For international exhibitions, wherever they take place, an export pedigree is required. An internal certificate must be issued for a dog brought from abroad.

If you complete the documentation through a local kennel club, you will have to pay additionally for the services of an intermediary. This will take at least 2 months. In RKF this procedure takes 2 weeks.

Pedigree cost for December 2022:

  • certificate issued in two languages without division into export and domestic – 3,000 rubles;
  • certificate without breeding rights - 1500 rubles.

Note! An additional fee for documents for a puppy purchased through a kennel is illegal, since it is already included in the price of the purchased dog.

How to avoid getting a puppy in a bag and what do dog breeders sell?

Purebred dogs are more than expensive goods; the cost can reach hundreds of dollars. But today, under the guise of reputable breeders, banal swindlers sometimes hide, who, without blinking an eye, pass off some mongrel as a scion with a rich pedigree. Why is this strange business thriving and how to avoid becoming a victim of scammers?

tropicazoo.com Dachshund for pet

Gantsevichi resident Vasily wanted to buy a puppy. I was purposefully looking for a German Shepherd, which over time could become not only a reliable guard, but also a true friend. I spent some time studying offers on the Internet, fortunately there are plenty of advertisements there. Occasionally he called to clarify information and conditions. Until I contacted the breeder all the way from Smorgon. He confidently took the initiative into his own hands:

How to distinguish fake from real papers

The authenticity of this set of documents against counterfeiting can be verified by contacting the nursery, which is listed on the official paper. If this puppy has been registered with them, then the puppy is genuine. Another check can be done through the dog's brand, which indicates its parent-producers.

When buying a pet, be it a husky or a Yorkie, you should immediately decide for what purpose you are purchasing it.

Advice! If you just need a good friend and companion, a watchman for a private house, a family guard, then you shouldn’t bother with documentation.

If the owner intends to participate with his dog in exhibitions, use it to produce offspring, or export the dog or puppies to other countries, then one should not neglect the dog’s certificate of origin. Registration of the main set of documentation without the primary one can result in large financial and nervous costs.

Why does a dog need documents?

Knowing exactly what documents are needed for a dog, you eliminate the risk of buying an outbred animal at an inadequate price. The lack of basic documentation also puts an end to a show career, traveling abroad and breeding.

Ownership of the dog

One of the most important moments when buying a dog is obtaining documents for the transfer of ownership from the breeder to the buyer. They are necessary in controversial situations when searching for a missing pet or dividing property during a divorce in court.

Papers for subsequent matings and exhibitions

Breeding a breed is an important undertaking based on careful selection of a pair. The absence of official papers increases the likelihood of the development of a genetic disease in the offspring or the occurrence of breeding marriages associated with deviations from the approved standard.

A show career outside the country imposes a large number of paperwork requirements. Getting into the ranks of participants without a complete package of documentation is a hopeless matter.

What information should it contain?

The card contains the following basic information about the puppy:

  • breed;
  • nickname;
  • date of birth;
  • floor;
  • color;
  • stamp number;
  • information about father and mother;
  • information about the breeder;
  • Full name and address of the puppy's owner.

When receiving your puppy's metric, make sure that:

  • the stamp on the card contains a letter code in Latin, and there are no dashes in the columns of the card;
  • All items that must be filled out are typed and not filled out by hand. Only the columns “Owner” and his “Address” are filled in by hand.

Modern realities

While we are talking about whether it is possible to make a pedigree for a dog without complying with the necessary documents under ideal conditions. In reality, breeding clubs really want to make a good living. Therefore, matings are registered even several months after the birth of the puppies, they do not pay attention to the lack of exhibition ratings, and sometimes they even issue documents to puppies resulting from incest. This can happen in kennels where dogs of different breeds live or several individuals that are close relatives to each other.

There is only one way to combat this, and that is to carefully choose a breeder. Usually matings are planned in advance, which is announced on a special website. The future owner can already see the parents, if necessary, come and meet them in person, and also leave a request for the kids. The more transparent the better. And, of course, choose big clubs that value their reputation.
