Features and description
In Medieval Europe, rodents were a huge problem for people. They fought them in different ways: they threw poison, trained small dogs to catch them, got cats, etc. Rats and mice not only destroyed houses, chewed through walls, ate food, but also spread dangerous infections, many of which were fatal.
The small but nimble dog did not kill the potentially dangerous animal, but scared it away. This made it incredibly useful for people from different social classes. However, the aristocrats were the first to come up with the idea of exploiting Czech warriors for this purpose. Gradually the breed spread outside the Czech Republic.
Interesting ! In the Medieval Czech Republic, a popular form of entertainment among members of the working class was fights between rat rats and rodents. The first ones were trained in advance and taught to show aggression towards rats and mice. Modern representatives of the breed are more peaceful and friendly.
Today, people buy a dog for companionship and companionship. She has proven herself to be an excellent athlete. For example, the Czech Ratlik regularly takes prizes in coursing or obedience. People love to watch his energetic movements and desire to win.
There is a version according to which the original purpose of the Prague Rat breed is to test food to determine the presence of poison in it. Most medieval aristocrats who made a fortune were afraid of poisoning, so they asked their four-legged pet to taste the food they were going to eat. After that they monitored his condition. If it did not worsen, continue the meal.
Prague Rat
We are grateful to you for your interest in the GALIVAS nursery. We welcome curious guests and potential buyers of puppies of this breed. We breed dogs of the smallest European breed - the Prague Rat. The kennel works closely with the Czech Breed Club and in its work adheres to its rules and regulations as much as possible. Dogs from our kennel regularly participate and win exhibitions in the homeland of the breed. To say that these are magnificent dogs is probably an understatement. Every owner of any dog will say that there is no better dog than his in the whole wide world. But still…
The Czech breed of mini-dogs Prague Krysarzhik (Krysarik, Ratlik or Prague Serochka) is a completely unique creation. The history of these crumbs goes back more than 1200 years. These are adorable dogs that were toys, companions and rat catchers in royal palaces. Once upon a time, the opportunity to communicate with them was the privilege of only kings and their entourage. But now it is available to us too. The Prague Rat is a little man, a child with an amazing character. This miracle was given to us by the ancestors of the Czech nobility, and our task is to preserve the breed in the same form, without spoiling the character and health of these amazing dogs!
Nowadays, the Prague Ratdog breed has become one of the most popular in the EU and Japan. In the Land of the Rising Sun, where everything miniature is traditionally adored, there is a real boom in rats. Foreigners are willing to pay a lot of money for puppies of a unique breed: for the Japanese and citizens of Western European countries, it is not a problem to shell out several thousand euros for a baby with a brilliant pedigree. In Japan, there are even dog dealers who specifically come to the Czech Republic to buy Ratlik puppies and then sell them in their own country. By the way, one of Paris Hilton's dogs is a ratlik.
Take a look at our photo album and forum pages, admire how graceful these dogs are, read what happy rat dog owners write about their amazing courage, devotion, enthusiasm, intelligence and tenderness. The Prague rat is a rarity, a real jewel. There are still very few of them in our country, and considering that most rat dog owners have two or more dogs, very few Russian residents have the opportunity to communicate with this charming creature.
With joy and pride we will show you our treasures. You can meet us at dog shows, as well as at various city events. You can find out about the time and place where we plan to appear with our pets, about our successes and much more on the news page of the site.
And if you, like we once did, fell in love with this unique breed and became ill with an incurable virus called the Prague rat, we will be happy to help you choose a pet for a show career, breeding, or as a pet. All our puppies are raised with great love and care.
We will be glad to see you in our circle of Prague Rat dog lovers. Call or write to us, chat with us on the forum, and we will answer all your questions.

Character
The companion from the Czech Ratlik is wonderful. What does it mean? The dog constantly accompanies the owner, for example, following him around the house with his “tail”. This is touching and suggests the idea of his possible inferiority. No, the tiny dog is self-sufficient and purposeful. Simply love for a person pushes her to the opportunity to seek refuge near him.
The Prague Rat Dog in the photo looks energetic, cheerful and cheerful. There is little that can make him nervous, angry or sad. However, ignoring the owner or household members can.
Remember ! This is a very smart dog. Don't underestimate her intellectual potential. The rat's memorization skill is excellent. Typically, nature does not endow miniature dogs with a good mind.
The character of this animal can be called balanced. He won't fuss or bark for no reason. In an uncertain situation, he clings to his owner, wants to be near him in order to feel protected. Rarely makes decisions on his own and relies on family members.
Has security features. It does not attack guests, but can bite if it senses malicious intent. The owner is notified of their arrival by barking loudly. They are wary of strangers. Doesn't allow anyone to pet him except the owner's friends.
By the way, the most important person in the life of a Prague rat is most often a kind and caring middle-aged woman. A miniature dog is more loyal to representatives of the weaker sex. She often feels like their protector, so she never leaves if there are strangers at home.
Cat lovers can safely adopt a Czech Ratlik, because he has a positive attitude towards them. It's strange, isn't it? Yes, this dog loves cats. Why, you ask? It's all about their common mission to exterminate rodents. Hatred for tailed pests unites the dog and the cat, forcing them to be friends and cooperate.
By the way, it is very rare to find a rat rat who would not get along with a cat in a home environment. But for rat lovers, such a pet is definitely not suitable! Natural intolerance towards them will never disappear in such a dog.
The Prague rat rat is filled with love. He is ready to share it with everyone, especially with babies. The dog is kind to each of the members of his pack, but becomes upset if they do not devote time to her. It is advisable to show your affection to the animal regularly, then it will be properly socialized and become happy.
How to choose a puppy
- Ask the breeder to show the puppies' parents, and at the same time check their pedigrees to make sure of the breed of the baby you are buying.
- Check whether the kennel you choose is registered with kennel clubs or associations. Better yet, visit a breed exhibition, where trusted breeders gather, with whom you can directly communicate about purchasing a Prague Ratdog puppy.
- Carefully examine the fur of the baby you like. There should be no bald spots on it, and the cover itself should be uniform in length and thickness.
- If you have children at home, it is better not to buy a mini-rat. Due to their fragility, such puppies require special treatment and increased attention, which can only be provided by an adult, responsible owner.
- Assess the general condition of the puppies: how neat and active they are, and whether they show signs of aggression. This is a general rule for all breeds, and in the case of Prague rat rats it also works.
- Reject puppies that are too big-headed. Almost all such babies suffer from hydrocephalus.
Care and maintenance
Such a dog adapts well to an apartment or house, the main thing is to provide him with personal space. Yes, the rat dog spends most of the day at the feet of his owner, but this does not mean that he does not need a place where he can be alone and relax quietly.
The main item you should buy for a miniature dog is a bed. It should be soft and warm. You can also encourage her to cover herself with a small blanket or blanket.
You should also buy some bowls for your Czech Ratlik. You will pour food into one and pour water into the other. And, of course, a mischievous and nimble dog must have a rubber ball. We recommend choosing a noisy toy. Dogs like to chase a ball that squeaks. The Prague rat does not require complex care. We suggest you follow these tips:
- Use a clean brush to remove plaque from your dog's mouth.
- Give him immunostimulating capsules, which are available at the clinic or pet store.
- Wash your face. Remove acidic fluid from your eyes to prevent infection.
- Grind down your claws.
- Use a massager to comb your pet's body. This is necessary to stimulate the process of coat renewal, as well as for lymphatic drainage.
If your pet has become withdrawn, weak and apathetic, there is a high probability that he is sick. Show it to the doctor!
Maintenance and care
The Prague Ratlik will need all the same things as any decorative dog. For example, before moving a puppy to a new home, a bed, latex toys, a couple of bowls, absorbent diapers, a tray, and a leash with a collar or harness must be purchased in advance for him. Despite the fact that the rats themselves prefer to relax on the master’s bed, it is better to equip them with a separate mini-living space, away from your bedroom. Although, perhaps you don’t mind your pet storing toys and half-eaten treats under the blanket. In this case, you don’t have to spend money on buying a bed or sleeping basket.
If the prospect of turning your room into a dog treasure is not encouraging, take a closer look at special houses for decorative pets. Choose durable options with a viewing platform on the roof, since Prague rats really like to jump onto low horizontal surfaces. You can throw a small diaper or blanket into your pet’s bed: ratliks love to wrap themselves inside any free piece of fabric, creating in it something like a hole and a bird’s nest at the same time.
In the first days after moving, it is important to resolve the toilet issue. And here the Czech warriors have two options at once: diapers or the street. True, you will have to take into account the accelerated metabolism of the breed, since long-suffering is not what Prague rat rats are about. As an example: even individuals that successfully relieve themselves outside the home can periodically do “their little things” in the apartment. Do not take this behavior as something out of the ordinary; it is better to protect yourself with diapers or a tray. By the way, about the tray: for a male dog, a post should be installed in it so that the animal has a guideline where to “aim”.
Hygiene
The short (much less often – semi-long) coat of the Prague rat does not present any unpleasant surprises. Czech Ratliks shed seasonally, twice a year, with the first shedding of puppies beginning at 3 months. During periods of intense hair loss, dogs are brushed daily. In the intervals between shedding, it is enough to brush your pet’s fur a couple of times a week, combining the removal of dead hair with a skin massage.
It is better to wash Prague rat rats as needed: frequent “bath days” spoil the structure of the coat and dry out the animal’s skin. In summer, dogs can be allowed to swim in a river or lake, which they love. The only thing: do not forget to rinse the wool with clean water after bathing to free it from remnants of algae and microorganisms living in reservoirs.
The ears of Prague rat rats do not cause much trouble, as they are well ventilated. But just in case, once a week it’s worth looking into the ear specula to remove excess wax and dust. Sometimes ratliks are bothered by ear mites and otitis media. Accordingly, if the dog starts shaking his head, it is better to take him to the veterinarian.
Eye care for the Prague rat rat is minimal: just remove lumps from the corners of the eyelids in the morning using a chamomile decoction and a soft cloth. At least three times a week, warriors are supposed to brush their teeth, so get your ward used to brushes, rubber fingertips and toothpastes from the first months of life. Once a month you will have to set aside time to trim the nails and trim them with a nail file. It is advisable to trim the miniature claw less and polish it more, so as not to injure the blood vessel. After walking, the paws of the Prague rat rat should be thoroughly washed with warm water, cracks treated with an antiseptic, if any, and the pads lubricated with vegetable oil or nourishing cream.
Walk
The Prague Rat Dog, despite its pronounced decorativeness, is by no means a homebody, so you will have to walk with your baby as much as with any active dog. The warriors are taken out into the street strictly on a leash. Removing a strap from an animal within the city is a mortal risk, given the rat’s innate “talent” for stirring up conflicts with his relatives, as well as his hunting habits. Initially, it is better to accustom your pet to a collar and a belt leash, since in the future, when you sign him up for OKD, this will greatly simplify the learning process. Walking on a harness or roulette is also possible, but after the ratlik has had time to get used to a traditional leash. But it is better for owners of show animals to put the harness aside, since such “accessories,” although slightly, distort the position of the paws, and at the same time excessively develop the chest muscles, which is regarded by the exhibition commissions as a defect.
Often on the street you can meet glamorous rats in trendy clothes, wearing stylish insulated slippers. There is a point in such equipment, but only in very cold weather: temperatures down to 0 °C can be tolerated by warriors easily and painlessly. If the thermometer shows minus values, the animal can be packed in a knitted overalls or sweater - rats have practically no undercoat, which, with an accelerated metabolism, is fraught with frostbite and colds. At the same time, you shouldn’t turn your dog into a doll, buying funny pajamas and homemade suits for it in heaps. Don’t forget, the animal’s fur should not be in constant close contact with the fabric: you don’t want a bald pet, do you?
As for shoes, everything is ambiguous here, since the waterproofness of dog boots is most often a myth. In addition, tiny boots hinder movement, forcing the animal to move in an unusual way. If you want to protect your pet’s paws from reagents, lubricate them with protective wax and do not walk on the sidewalks in winter. It’s better to take your baby away from the salt-sprinkled paths and wander around with him for a while.
Feeding
Prague rat rats can be fed premium dry food or natural products. There is a third, mixed type of feeding, when the dog eats dry croquettes, but several times a week receives pieces of raw beef or rabbit (practised by a small percentage of breeders). If you are for naturalness in all its manifestations, transfer your ratlik to a standard diet, the basis of which is lean meat of any variety, including poultry. Sometimes, for the sake of variety, you can add boiled pollock or salmon fillet, as well as beef tripe, to your four-legged friend’s bowl.
Cereals in a dog’s diet should make up a minimal proportion: cooking porridge seasoned with a couple of pieces of meat for the Prague rat is definitely not an option. Among vegetables, ratliks have the greatest passion for raw carrots, which replace their seeds. Dogs are no less willing to gnaw apple slices and cabbage leaves. Boiled pumpkin combined with offal can also be a tasty and nutritious lunch.
Up to two months, puppies eat every 3.5 hours, that is, up to 6 times a day. From 8 to 16 weeks of age, the number of feedings is reduced by one. A four- to six-month-old rat eats four times a day with an interval of 4.5 hours, and a six-month-old rat feeds only three times. From ten months, the dog is considered an adult and switches to two feedings a day with an interval of 9-9.5 hours.
Nutrition
Almost all breeders agree that the best product for feeding a purebred dog is dry or canned food. But, the Prague rat puppy must receive a large amount of protein and calcium before the body is fully formed.
But this product does not contain enough of these substances. Therefore, a young representative of the breed should be given natural food. So, what should be on his daily menu?
- Milk.
- Buckwheat/oatmeal/wheat/rice groats.
- Butter (added to porridge).
- Turkey or chicken fillet.
- Soup cooked with vegetables.
- Bone cartilage.
Never treat your pet to baked goods, chocolate, marmalade, stewed or fried pork, pasta or raw potatoes. Eating these foods will make your dog's digestion difficult and may even cause him to vomit.
A puppy should eat small portions, but often, and an adult dog - 2 times a day. Regularly fill your animal's second bowl with clean water. He drinks often and a lot.
Education and training
A Prague Rat puppy, like most other dogs, should be raised and socialized from the moment it appears in the apartment. Czech warriors are also dominant, and if you don’t set the boundaries of what is permitted in time, they will quickly sit on your neck. At the same time, it is very important that until the age of 7 weeks the baby is with his mother and his brothers. In the future, time spent with the family will help the dog build relationships with the person and find its place in the canine team.
Otherwise, ratliks are typical lap dogs, greedy for praise, tasty incentives and outright flattery, so if you want to teach a ratlik something, do not skimp on affection and compliments. Never, under any circumstances, physically punish an animal. Firstly, you risk injuring an overly fragile pet, and secondly, you will forever discourage him from working in pairs with you. However, it is unlikely that you will raise your hand to such a groovy charmer, so the main problem facing the owners of the breed is not even upbringing and training, but the ability to restrain one’s own emotions at the sight of these touching creatures. Don’t forget that Prague rat rats subtly sense the mood of their owner, and if you give in, they will not miss an opportunity to turn the matter in their favor. Have a positive attitude towards the activities, but try not to spoil your pet, so that later you don’t grab your head from the dirty tricks and destruction he has caused.
As for training programs suitable for the Prague rat, the best option for him would be OKD. Yes, yes, these little ones do an excellent job with the General training course. Moreover, a ratlik that has been trained and has understood the basics of etiquette will cause fewer troubles on walks: remember about the breed’s passion for chasing and reluctance to give in in disputes with larger relatives. Rats are also capable of distinguishing themselves in sports disciplines. They are best given obedience standards such as obedience, as well as all kinds of “catch-up” (coursing).
Reproduction and lifespan
The average lifespan of the Prague rat rat is 14 years. If a dog is seriously ill for a long time, then its service life will barely be 10-12 years. It is important to always monitor your pet's health!
Males regularly show sexual interest in females, especially when they are in heat. Breeders know that after the female starts menstruating, she should wait 3 to 5 days before mating, because this way the likelihood of conception is much higher.
Only fully mature and psychologically stable dogs can be bred. They must be of high quality, otherwise the breeder will not make money selling puppies. Pregnancy in a female Prague rat rat lasts no more than 73 days.
When choosing a puppy, pay attention to its behavior. The dog should not be lethargic or motionless. Choose the one who approaches you first! This is classic advice from breeders.
Price
Those wishing to purchase a valuable canine companion should be prepared to pay a decent amount of money for it. Czech warriors are loved for their extraordinary devotion, good nature and ability to “neutralize” rats that are unpleasant for many people and cause trouble.
So, the price of a Prague rat rat in modern Russia with a pedigree is from 1000 dollars. There is a nursery in Moscow where such puppies are raised. It's called Ratlik blues. When you see these dogs, you will probably be confused; their charm will amaze anyone. But the staff of the capital's nursery will definitely help you make the right choice of dog.

Typically, miniature dogs are quite hysterical and difficult to control, but the Czech Ratlik is an exception. He is smart, obedient and trusting. This set of qualities makes him a good student.
He remembers the rules invented by his household very quickly. It socializes and adapts well, but only on condition that the owner is always nearby. Requires a good-natured educational approach. Shouting and cursing during teaching will definitely not bring results to the teacher. Remember, you need to communicate with the rat rat gently and at the same time persistently.
You shouldn’t forbid him to climb onto the sofa/bed/chair. If you notice that the dog is chewing shoes, curtains or other objects, scold him. Don't let them bite, especially puppies! Baby rats often bite the hands of household members when their teeth are renewed.
This is how they try to reduce the pain. We recommend providing them with a baby pacifier or rubber ducky to play with. Interaction with such objects has a positive effect on the animal’s psyche.
Walk your dog often to keep him active and happy. Go with her to nature, to the river or to the forest. Mischievous and energetic warriors love to explore new areas. You can safely let them off the leash without fear of them running away or hiding.
Possible diseases and methods of treating them
There are practically no specific diseases for Prague rat rats. They are strong, have strong immunity, but periodically get sick, like all living creatures. Most representatives of the breed end up seeing a veterinarian due to diseases of the oral cavity, and more often – diseased teeth.
For most owners, cleaning a miniature dog's mouth is a big challenge. When plaque accumulates on the teeth, they begin to hurt a lot. As a result, the animal loses appetite and weight. Prevention is regular cleaning of his mouth with a brush.
Also, some rat rats often experience luxation of the kneecap, especially those who move a lot. In this case, you should provide the dog with rest and hospitalize it. One final piece of advice: keep your pet warm in the cold in winter, as his thin skin and short fur make him very cold.
