Everything you need to know about Previcox for dogs

"Previcox" for dogs (Previcox) is a highly effective anti-inflammatory, as well as analgesic and antipyretic modern drug used in the treatment of postoperative complications of varying severity, as well as in the treatment of injuries, arthritis and arthrosis. The product, represented by the most selective COX-2 inhibitor, provides excellent results in the form of the fastest possible relief of pain, reduction of lameness and improvement of behavior in pets with osteoarthritis.

Is it possible?

Veterinarians prescribe the drug for arthrosis and arthritis, injuries and benign tumors. Often the medicine is recommended for use for complications that develop after operations.

Previcox is good because it acts at the site of pain or inflammation without causing harm to other organs.

15 minutes after the pet swallows the tablets, the medicinal substances enter the bloodstream and begin to have beneficial effects. After 1.5 hours, the maximum concentration of the active component in the blood is observed. The pharmacological effect lasts throughout the day.

Previcox is not dangerous for dogs. But it is not recommended to use it without consulting a veterinarian.

57 and 227 mg

The manufacturer offers the drug in the form of two types of tablets – 57 and 227 mg. They differ in the amount of active ingredient. In the first case, each tablet contains 57 mg of the active ingredient, and in the second - 227 mg.

It is more convenient for owners of small breed pets to use tablets with a dosage of 57 mg. A medicine with a higher concentration of the active ingredient is intended for large dogs.

Composition of the drug

The active ingredient in Previcox is firocoxib. This substance helps cope with fever and eliminates the inflammatory process. Additional components of the drug are:

  • lactose monohydrate, which participates in metabolic processes and charges the dog’s body with energy;
  • cellulose, responsible for the absorption of the main component;
  • silicon dioxide cleanses the body of toxins;
  • lactose minohydrate (improves metabolism, is a source of energy);
  • cellulose (slows down the absorption of the substance, gives the main component time to work);
  • silicon dioxide (removes toxins, fights inflammatory processes);
  • meat flavoring that attracts dogs with its taste.

The shelf life of the tablets is 3 years from the release date indicated on the packaging. The drug retains its medicinal qualities only if properly stored. To do this, you should put the medicine in a place protected from sunlight, where room temperature is maintained.

Contraindications

In accordance with the instructions for use attached to the veterinary drug "Previcox", this medication is not recommended for use by pregnant dogs and lactating bitches, as well as puppies under ten weeks of age. This remedy is also contraindicated for the smallest pets that weigh less than three kilograms.

Also, the drug "Previcox" is contraindicated for use in a number of diseases in acute or chronic form, in the presence of individual intolerance to one or several active components. It is extremely undesirable to prescribe a modern highly selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug if the dog has a history of a tendency to allergic reactions of varying severity.

The anesthetic drug is not prescribed for hemorrhagic syndrome, as well as severe abnormalities in the functioning of the cardiac and vascular system, in the presence of renal failure and various liver pathologies, including liver failure. It is strictly undesirable to use this veterinary drug if there are abnormalities in the functioning of the stomach and intestinal tract, especially if there is a peptic ulcer or if the pet is at risk of developing internal bleeding.

Previcox is a relatively new drug, so today analogs of this drug are quite rare. These include the well-proven drugs “Norocarp” and “Rimadyl”.

How to give?

The medicine has a meaty aroma, so most often dogs do not refuse to take the pills.

The drug is given to the pet 1 time. It is advisable to do this in the morning after the animal wakes up. The owner can feed the tablet to the dog or place it on the back of the tongue. If your dog refuses the medication, you can mix the tablet into his favorite food or treat.

Side effects

The active component firocoxib acts directly on the points of inflammation themselves and has virtually no negative effect on the functioning of the digestive system or the integrity of the gastric walls. However, some pets may experience diarrhea, vomiting, or irritation of the stomach lining when taking Previcox. Such symptoms in an animal, as a rule, spontaneously disappear within one day.

If the above signs of intolerance by the four-legged pet’s body to the active components persist for several days, and there is a decrease in the pet’s body weight against the background of the appearance of obvious allergic reactions or traces of blood in the feces, it is necessary to stop using the drug, after which it is imperative to seek advice to the veterinarian.

When discontinuing and initially using the drug Previcox, no specific effects on the animal’s body were identified, but using the drug for three months or more will require monitoring of the dog’s condition by the treating veterinarian.

Owners

Yana, 27 years old, Rostov-on-Don : “Our female poodle underwent surgery on her hind legs, which is why Previcox was prescribed. There were no problems with taking it, because the tablets have a meaty taste, which the dog liked.

After the first pill, it became noticeable that the girl cheered up and became more active. At the same time as the medicine, they were given vitamins that the doctor recommended. A month later everything returned to normal. Nyusha is cheerful and active again.”

  • difficult lifting of an animal after a long rest or sleep;
  • frequent lying position;
  • problems with sitting and standing;
  • the difficulty of independently climbing flights of stairs;
  • inability to overcome even minor obstacles;
  • noticeable limp while walking;
  • by pulling up the paw and frequently moving on three limbs.

A sick animal does not allow the affected limb to be touched, whines even when the joint is lightly stroked, and suffers from muscle swelling and fever. If such symptoms are present, veterinarians prefer to prescribe Previcox, a drug developed in France, to dogs.
