I I. Pharmacological properties

7. Previcox tablets 57 mg and 227 mg belong to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Firocoxib, which is part of the drug, is a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), selectively disrupts the formation of prostaglandins involved in the formation of the inflammatory response, and suppresses the exudative and proliferative phases of inflammation. It acts predominantly at the site of inflammation and has virtually no effect on the production of prostaglandins that regulate renal blood flow and the integrity of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract. It has an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect. Following oral administration to dogs at the recommended dose, firocoxib is rapidly absorbed, with maximum blood concentrations achieved within 1.25 hours. The half-life is 8 hours. Firocoxib is almost completely bound to blood proteins, metabolized in the liver, and excreted in bile through the intestines. Previcox tablets 57 mg and 227 mg in terms of the degree of impact on the body are classified as moderately hazardous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses they do not have a sensitizing, teratogenic or embryotoxic effect.

III.Order of application

8. Previcox tablets 57 mg and 227 mg are prescribed to dogs as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic agent in the treatment of osteoarthritis, as well as after orthopedic, dental and soft tissue operations. 9. Contraindication for use is the animal’s increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug (including a history of it). It is prohibited to use the drug in pregnant and lactating females, puppies up to 1 week of age and dogs weighing less than 3 kg, as well as animals with gastrointestinal bleeding, blood diseases, hemorrhagic syndrome and severe renal and liver failure. 10. To relieve postoperative pain and inflammation during soft tissue operations, orthopedic and dental operations, the drug is used 2 hours before the start of the operation, and then, if necessary, 1 time per day for 2-3 days. 11. In case of an overdose of the drug, the animal may experience excessive salivation, gastrointestinal upset, and a depressed state. 12. No peculiarities of action were identified during the first use of the drug and upon its withdrawal. 13. Violations of the drug use regimen should be avoided, as this may lead to a decrease in its effectiveness. If you miss another dose of the drug, its use must be resumed in the prescribed dosage and according to the same regimen. 14. Pharmacological properties

Previcox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

The active substance, firocoxib, is a selective inhibitor of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2), selectively disrupts the formation of prostaglandins involved in the formation of the inflammatory response, and suppresses the proliferative and exudative phases of inflammation. Mainly acts at the site of inflammation and has a very slight effect on the production of prostaglandites that regulate renal blood flow and the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects.

Firocoxib is rapidly absorbed, the maximum concentration in the animal's blood is reached after 1 ¼ hours. The half-life is 8 hours. Firocoxib is completely bound to blood proteins, metabolized in the liver and excreted through the intestines with bile.

Previcox is a moderately hazardous substance in terms of exposure; in recommended doses it does not have embryotoxic, teratogenic or sensitizing effects.

How it works

Previcox is classified as a non-steroidal antiphlogistant. Firocoxib selectively deactivates an enzyme that is involved in the production of prostaglandins, mediators of inflammation. The active substance is active only at the site of inflammation and does not affect the synthesis of other biologically active substances that regulate the integrity of the intestinal mucosa and blood circulation in the kidneys. Relieves pain within 24 hours after use. You can evaluate the effect of the drug after one or several days. The pet will begin to wag its tail, move more, and stop limping. The liver is involved in the metabolism of firocoxib, so there is an additional burden on it.

Contraindications

Individual hypersensitivity to the components of Previcox.

It is forbidden to use lactating and pregnant bitches, puppies under 10 weeks of age, as well as adult dogs weighing less than 3 kg, animals with blood diseases, gastrointestinal bleeding, hemorrhagic syndrome and severe liver and kidney failure.

Previcox should not be used in combination with glucocorticosteroids and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Previcox is not intended for use in food producing animals.

Indications for use

Previcox is prescribed to eliminate pain, as well as normalize temperature and stop the inflammatory process in the following diseases or pathological conditions:

  • arthritis, arthrosis;
  • intervertebral hernia;
  • tendovaginitis, bursitis;
  • injuries to joints, tendons, spine, soft tissues;
  • before surgery;
  • recovery after surgery;
  • for an old dog suffering from chronic joint diseases;
  • before removing tartar;
  • difficulty climbing stairs;
  • locomotion on three legs.

Side effects

When using Previcox, complications and side effects in dogs, as a rule, are not observed.

Some dogs may experience diarrhea, vomiting and irritation of the gastric mucosa after using the drug, which disappear spontaneously. If the above symptoms do not disappear, the animal’s weight decreases, the animal develops allergic reactions, or blood appears in the feces, the use of the drug must be stopped and contact a veterinarian.

Owner reviews

Ekaterina, owner of a Caucasian Shepherd dog: “The five-month-old puppy began to limp on its left paw while changing its teeth. The joint was swollen, hot and painful. I took my pet to the clinic, the vet examined him and prescribed Previcox. The next day I noticed that the puppy began to limp less, and after 3 days the swelling disappeared. Despite the relief, I followed the course of treatment prescribed by the specialist. Greechka is now 9 months old. He is cheerful, playful, and has forgotten that he once limped.”

Elizaveta, owner of a poodle: “My dog had surgery on his back leg. While walking, Archie jumped poorly and limped. It turned out that he had a congenital pathology that manifested itself after an injury. The doctor prescribed Previcox. The first time we fed the pill before surgery and continued at home for 3 days in a row. The tablet smelled like meat, the dog ate it from his hand. 3 months have passed and my dog is happy and healthy.”

Olga, owner of a Giant Schnauzer: “I wouldn’t recommend Previcox to anyone. My Medea was 14 years old. She began to limp. I took her to the veterinarian. Previcox was prescribed. After the first tablet the dog became bored. After the second one I fell ill. We stopped giving the drug, but it was too late: the next morning the dog died.”

Is it possible?

Veterinarians prescribe the drug for arthrosis and arthritis, injuries and benign tumors. Often the medicine is recommended for use for complications that develop after operations.

Previcox is good because it acts at the site of pain or inflammation without causing harm to other organs.

15 minutes after the pet swallows the tablets, the medicinal substances enter the bloodstream and begin to have beneficial effects. After 1.5 hours, the maximum concentration of the active component in the blood is observed. The pharmacological effect lasts throughout the day.

Previcox is not dangerous for dogs. But it is not recommended to use it without consulting a veterinarian.

57 and 227 mg

The manufacturer offers the drug in the form of two types of tablets – 57 and 227 mg. They differ in the amount of active ingredient. In the first case, each tablet contains 57 mg of the active ingredient, and in the second - 227 mg.

It is more convenient for owners of small breed pets to use tablets with a dosage of 57 mg. A medicine with a higher concentration of the active ingredient is intended for large dogs.

Composition of the drug

The active ingredient in Previcox is firocoxib. This substance helps cope with fever and eliminates the inflammatory process. Additional components of the drug are:

  • lactose monohydrate, which participates in metabolic processes and charges the dog’s body with energy;
  • cellulose, responsible for the absorption of the main component;
  • silicon dioxide cleanses the body of toxins;
  • lactose minohydrate (improves metabolism, is a source of energy);
  • cellulose (slows down the absorption of the substance, gives the main component time to work);
  • silicon dioxide (removes toxins, fights inflammatory processes);
  • meat flavoring that attracts dogs with its taste.

The shelf life of the tablets is 3 years from the release date indicated on the packaging. The drug retains its medicinal qualities only if properly stored. To do this, you should put the medicine in a place protected from sunlight, where room temperature is maintained.

Composition, release form

Previcox contains the main active ingredient, firocoxib, as well as lactose, which gives the product a sweetish taste. The binding element is represented by specially treated cellulose. In addition, Previcox tablets include silicon dioxide, which acts as a base, as well as simple carbohydrates, the aromatic composition “smoked meat” and a dye that is safe for animals in the form of an iron compound. The last component has a beneficial effect on the animal’s hematopoietic system.

Today, the drug "Previcox" is produced by veterinary pharmaceuticals only in the form of tablets that have a brownish color. The tablets are packaged in plastic or foil blisters of ten pieces. Such blisters are found in standard cardboard boxes. Among other things, Previcox tablets are packaged in special, very convenient polyethylene bottles. Regardless of the specifics of the release form, each package of a veterinary drug is necessarily accompanied by intuitive and detailed instructions for use.

On each side of the original tablet there is a special dividing line and the letter “M”, under which there is the number “57” or “227”, indicating the volume of the main active ingredient.
