Spaniel ears: how to properly care for them? Possible diseases and their treatment

Spaniels are the most popular hunting dog today. This friendly creature is ready to walk many kilometers next to its owner through forests and swamps, help drive a duck out of its hiding place and pull shot prey out of the lake. At the same time, the spaniel has good health, which is very important if you are an avid hunter.

However, a spaniel's ears need constant care and attention. If you decide to choose this breed, then prepare some cotton swabs and get ready for a daily inspection. Charming ears are a kind of calling card of this breed, but they create additional difficulties in care.

Prevention is the best cure

The Spaniel's ears first of all need airing. A hanging position contributes to the accumulation of sulfur and the development of various infections. An additional factor is the overgrowing of the ear from the inside with hair. This provides ideal conditions for the development of pathogenic infections.

Therefore, it is recommended to carefully shave or pluck the inside of a spaniel's ears. If the pet is not accustomed to such procedures, then, as a last resort, you can cut the fur short with scissors.

General characteristics of the breed

All spaniels are versatile hunters and faithful companions. In appearance and temperamental characteristics, dogs of different species are sometimes strikingly different, but there are still common characteristics due to which individuals are combined into one group.

So, what types of spaniels are there? As a rule, the size of dogs is small; depending on the characteristics of the species, they are classified as medium or small breeds. The skeleton of individuals is strong, the body is muscular, squat and slightly square in shape. The dogs' health is excellent.

The dogs' coat is thick, silky, with different lengths of hair (shortened in the head area, medium length on the body, and maximum length in the fringe areas). The coat can be smooth or wavy. The range of colors is wide: the spaniel has a chocolate shade, black color, reddish-red or multi-colored, spotted coat type.

According to the temperamental characteristics of the Spaniel dog, the characteristics of the breed are varied. But among them there are some common features:

  • High intelligence;
  • Excellent training perception;
  • Developed working qualities;
  • Friendly character.

Less positive aspects include the high need for care for pets. Spaniels need long active walks, a proper diet, and proper coat care.

By purpose, the spaniel breed is a type of hunting dog. These dogs are capable of tracking down game, waiting in ambush, catching up with a wounded victim and bringing prey to the owner. Moreover, they hunt equally effectively both on land and in water. However, some representatives of the breed are considered exclusively decorative, although such pets are not without a natural desire to hunt.

Natural ventilation

There is another preventive measure available. The spaniel's ears can be raised above the head by securing them with a soft clip or hair tie. This is especially true during meals. If you do not do this, after a meal you will have to wash the outer and inner surfaces of the ear, and there is a high probability that water will get inside the auricle. This often leads to inflammatory processes.

On a walk

Representatives of this breed love to walk very much. Active games and exercises in the fresh air strengthen the immune system and normalize the functioning of all organs and systems. A spaniel's ears get very dirty when walking. The dog runs, pressing its curious nose to the ground, and long “canvases” dangle along the ground, collecting dust and microbes.

Coming home, any owner will try to clean his pet. A moistened but not completely washed ear becomes an ideal incubator for bacteria. Therefore, before going outside, make sure to fix your ears high on your head. To do this, you can come up with a headband made of soft elastic. The simplest option would be a piece of nylon stocking. It's quick, cheap, and great for keeping your ears clean.

Spaniel activity

This is a very active breed, which, however, is not surprising, because spaniels are hunters. Of course, most pets are kept in city apartments, and many have never even seen game. But the temperament of dogs of this breed is very lively and hot. Therefore, you will have to walk your pet a lot and often. During a walk, the animal must not only satisfy its natural needs, but also its need for movement. Walk for at least 1.5 hours, let your dog run around as much as possible. Buy a special exercise machine that your pet can play and exercise with. Puller would be a great solution.

Regular inspection

We have already mentioned that it is necessary to regularly examine the entire ear cavity. Before this, prepare cotton swabs and disks, warm water. Lay your pet on its side and caress it so that it lies quietly during the procedure. Now turn your ear completely inside out and inspect it carefully.

Since cleaning your dog's ears is not difficult, there is no need to contact the veterinarian every time. We offer you a general scheme, following which you can maintain their ideal condition.

Features of feeding

Up to 4 weeks, puppies eat only mother's milk. Depending on the type of content, the following is used for the first complementary feeding:

  • natural type – minced meat, egg yolk (no more than 2 times a week), vegetables, dairy products;
  • industrial type - soaked dry food.

Start with small portions, gradually increasing their size.

A puppy's food at 1.5-2 months should be of a fairly thick consistency.

To raise a healthy dog, you should not overfeed your puppy. But there shouldn’t be a shortage either. You may deprive it of essential nutrients, which can harm its development.

To keep him active and prevent his belly from becoming bloated, feed him in small portions, but often:

  • from the moment of weaning from the mother and up to 3 months - 6 times a day;
  • 3-5 months – 5 times;
  • 5-9 months – 4 times;
  • 9-11 months – 3 times;
  • from 11 months – once.

Up to 10 months, the puppy is actively developing and needs more protein than an adult dog - 30-50 grams per kilogram of weight.

The total volume of food is 80-120 grams per kilogram of weight. It gradually decreases and by 12 months it can be 60 g/kg. The puppy should eat everything by licking the bowl. If food remains, then you are overfeeding him.

When you pick up a dog from a breeder, ask what type of feeding the puppy had. If you change it, the transition should be smooth within 1-2 weeks.

Basic steps

If the inside of the cavity is heavily overgrown with hair, then take nail scissors and cut off all the long hairs, opening the ear canal. Now you can assess the presence of sulfur deposits. If there are few of them, the skin is pale pink, then this time you can do without special cleaning.

How to clean your dog’s ears if you see that a lot of wax has accumulated? In this case, take a cotton pad, lightly moisten it with warm water and squeeze it thoroughly. There is no need to reach deep into the ear with a stick; you only remove what is visible. If in recent days you have noticed that your dog is scratching its ears, it makes sense to use special drops. However, be sure to consult your doctor.

Thor 6 stars whose chests are called spaniel ears

A woman’s breasts are one of the most attractive parts of the body, which is why many people have such a complex about their absence or sagging. But you can't argue with nature. The condition of the breast is influenced by many factors - childbirth, age, unsuccessful surgery, etc. stars are no exception; not everything is perfect for them, as we think.

We present to you domestic stars whose breasts require correction.

Yana Rudkovskaya

The photographs are old, today the bust of Rudkovskaya has already been corrected. Before plastic surgery, her breasts were sagging, but she still showed them off without hesitation. This breast shape haunts almost all women who have given birth; there is nothing unnatural about it.

Anastasia Volochkova

Volochkova’s bust constantly strives to “jump out”. If the swimsuit supports the breasts, then in low-necked dresses they practically fall out.

Polina Gagarina

Although Gagarina had become slimmer, her breasts still sank. This is associated with sudden weight loss and childbirth.

Lolita

Lolita has no complexes, and neither does she about her breasts. She doesn't hide it at all. The singer's breasts are quite large, and accordingly, they sagged impressively. Lola's face looks good for her age, but for some reason she neglects taking care of her body.

Ksyusha Borodina

Ksenia never shows herself in clothes without a bra. On her social networks, all the photos are the same, there’s nothing to complain about. However, Borodina’s husband Omarov often shows his real wife.

Victoria Bonya

Vika also once had sagging breasts. She turned, as they say, to an experienced plastic surgeon, but something went wrong. Vicky's breasts must be handled carefully, otherwise she tends to leave them.

Returning from the hunt

If you often spend time outdoors, then your Cocker Spaniel's ears need more careful care and attention. The most important thing is to prevent moisture from entering the ear canal to minimize the likelihood of inflammation. The working dog swims into lakes and rivers to ensure the supply of game. If we can plug the ear canal with cotton balls while bathing, then the dog should maintain perfect hearing while hunting.

In order to protect the ears, it is recommended to carefully shave the inside of the fur and lubricate the entire skin with sunflower oil. This will prevent water from entering, but does not guarantee 100% protection. Therefore, after the end of the hunt, it is necessary to immediately perform a number of procedures:

  • Carefully inspect the fur and ears for the presence of parasites.
  • Dry the cavity using cotton balls.

Preparing for the arrival of a puppy

Before a little Russian spaniel crosses the threshold of a new home, it is necessary to thoroughly prepare the premises for this important event.

There are some recommendations that will help novice dog breeders provide competent care and safe maintenance for their new four-legged family member:

  1. All wires, small objects, household chemicals, and plants should be removed from the puppy’s reach.
  2. Outdoor shoes pose a danger to an unvaccinated baby, as they can contain a huge number of viruses, and sometimes helminth eggs. From the moment the dog appears in the house, shoes should be stored in special shoe racks. It is also advisable to put house slippers on a higher shelf.
  3. When keeping a puppy in an apartment on the day of his move, it is advisable to carry out a general cleaning using disinfectants, which must be thoroughly rinsed off.
  4. The necessary accessories for caring for a spaniel puppy are purchased in advance: a bed, bowls, disposable diapers, a leash, a collar, toys.
  5. It is advisable to choose bowls with height adjustment so that as the puppy grows they can be raised higher.
  6. Toys for a Russian Spaniel puppy should not have small or easily detachable parts that the pet can swallow. It is best that these are latex or rubber toys that do not spoil, as well as rope cords.
  7. You should ask the breeder in advance what kind of food the puppy is used to. The baby should be fed this food for the first 2–3 weeks.
  8. The place for the Russian Spaniel puppy should be in a secluded corner, located away from heating devices, drafts, audio and climate systems. At the same time, the baby should be able to see the entire room. It is better to place absorbent diapers, as well as food and water bowls in close proximity to the puppy’s bed.
  9. It is recommended to purchase a special playpen or safety gate for the doorway. This will help the baby quickly adapt to the new home, and will also protect against accidents that can happen when the pet is left alone at home.
  10. The flooring in the room where the puppy will live should be non-slippery. Otherwise he may get injured.

Practical advice

How can the owner determine when to intervene and when the condition of the auricle is completely normal? A hunting dog with long ears is a very beautiful creature, but anatomy suggests that the owner must have certain care skills and know what to do in a given case.

  1. Open the ear. If the skin inside is pink and slightly warm, then you can finish the preventive examination. Don't forget to praise your pet for its patience.
  2. The presence of thick brown sulfur is a reason to immediately arm yourself with special napkins or cotton swabs and remove it from the sink.
  3. If you find blood-sucking insects, it is extremely important to quickly remove them using tweezers. In the summer, especially if you regularly visit the forest, such inspections should be regular.
  4. If your dog is shaking its ears, this is a warning sign. For the first time, you can pour a little special lotion into your ear and gently massage the auricle. After this, use cotton balls to remove excess liquid. If every time after sleep your dog shakes its ears or scratches them with its paw, be sure to consult a doctor. Perhaps the cause is ear mites.
  5. It is much worse if the dog has ear pain. This is easy to understand, as the pet loses activity, begins to lie down more, tilts its head low, and groans when trying to scratch or touch its ear.
  6. Inflammatory diseases, otitis media are very serious, as they can cause complications in the inner ear. As a result, long and complex treatment may be required. Therefore, if your dog has an earache, do not self-medicate, but go straight to the doctor.

Evelina Bledans

Now the domestic star of the 90s has no problem showing off her breasts in photographs. And all because in 2022, Evelina decided to have an operation to enlarge it. Before this, the actress’s bust was of a “non-Hollywood” shape, which is clearly visible in old photographs.

Bledans admitted that she had a lot of complexes because of her atypical bust and envied her colleagues with beautiful breasts. And then I found out that everyone had it done, and without remorse she lay on the surgeon’s table. Well, it happens!

Evelina was lucky, unlike these celebrities: Failed mammoplasty of stars: before and after photos.

Cleaning technique

Speaking about how to clean the ears of a spaniel, it must be emphasized that it is the anatomical features of the breed that give rise to some difficulties. For example, owners of a Rottweiler or a German Shepherd may never know what this procedure means in their entire lives. It is the long ears of short-legged dogs that are the most problematic. However, everything is not so difficult, and with a little practice, you will easily perform all hygiene procedures.

  • Caring for your spaniel's ears requires regularity, so first of all you need to teach your pet that this is necessary. Do not catch the animal on purpose; it is better to time this procedure to coincide with moments of affection. When the dog is lying quietly, open the sink and inspect.
  • While cleaning, you need to talk to your pet and praise him. This is extremely important to make it easier for you to proceed with the examination in the future, and for this you need to associate hygiene with positive emotions.
  • First of all, wet the wet disc and rub it several times along the inner surface. Now you can close your ear and perform a massage. With light movements you will knead your ear, and all dirt and wax will easily dissolve.
  • Now you can start cleaning the sink. Wax is usually easily removed with a cotton pad. You can restore order inside the bends using a cotton swab. Usually dogs tolerate massage very well, moreover, it brings them a lot of pleasure.
  • If the dog is large, then there is no point in using ear sticks. Just wrap your finger in a strip of gauze, soak it in a special lotion and clean the sink. Remaining dirt can be removed using a special disc.

Puppy care

By feeding on mother's milk, the puppy receives the necessary antibodies and develops immunity.

Make sure your baby is healthy and vaccinated when you pick him up from the breeder.

You can walk with your puppy only after all the necessary vaccinations. Train your spaniel to go to the toilet while walking. Praise him if everything worked out.

Start with walks in a quiet place, gradually increasing their duration.

Need to remember

Each ear uses its own set of cotton pads, sticks and swabs. In addition, after treating one ear, it is advisable to change the solution in which you soaked the discs and wash your hands. This will prevent the infection from transferring from one ear to the other, provided that there is one.

After completing the procedure, be sure to wipe the inner surface of the ear dry and open the shell until completely dry. To do this, it is most convenient to use a mesh elastic band. Simply place it on your dog's head and tuck his ears under it.

The ideal option is to use a special powder after cleaning, which dries the surface well and removes remaining moisture. You can use a small amount of starch instead. But make sure that it does not fall into the ear canal.

Keeping a Russian Spaniel – Correct Diet

The owner chooses the type of food for an adult Russian spaniel independently. This can be either ready-made premium food or natural food. Usually the first method of feeding is preferable if the dog goes hunting, where it is not possible to prepare food for it. If the pet is not used for hunting purposes, the owners opt for natural products.

Important. You cannot use both types of food at the same time, as this can lead to digestive upset.

When feeding natural food, the dog must additionally receive the necessary vitamins and minerals. The basis of the diet (about 75%) of an adult Russian spaniel should be lean meat and offal.

Authorized products:

  • porridge from buckwheat, millet and rice cereals;
  • dairy products;
  • boiled sea fish without bones;
  • boiled yolks of chicken or quail eggs;
  • greenery;
  • fruits and dried fruits;
  • vegetables;
  • rye bread and crackers from it.

It is strictly forbidden to give representatives of the breed:

  • legumes;
  • fried food;
  • smoked meats and sausages;
  • river fish;
  • spices and seasonings;
  • confectionery and baked goods;
  • tubular bones.

When keeping a Russian spaniel at home, it should be taken into account that these dogs are prone to overeating and, accordingly, to obesity. That is why they should not be overfed.

Advice on keeping adult dogs: experienced dog handlers recommend slightly underfeeding them. This helps keep them in good shape and also monitor their weight.

For your information. It is better not to feed a dog used for hunting on the day of this event. Also, a day before the hunt, it is recommended to exclude from the menu foods that temporarily dull the sense of smell (eggs, cheese, sausage and smoked meats, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, honey).

Observing the dog's reaction

If your pet behaves calmly or shows signs of pleasure, then everything is going well. You can lightly massage and wipe the sink and let him go for a walk. But if a dog scratches its ears and begins to worry, this may indicate a number of diseases, ranging from mites to an inflammatory process.

Symptoms are usually activated by outside intervention. Therefore, if your pet simply shook his ears and calmly lay down, this is normal; he shook out the remaining lotion or water. If he starts scratching his ears with his claws, then contact a veterinarian.

Use of special means

We deliberately do not name special products for the care of the auricle, as well as for the treatment of diseases of the hearing organs. The fact is that if the dog is healthy, its ears are dry and pink, odorless, and fluid does not flow from them, then the use of any means does not make sense. You can wipe off sulfur and dust with a simple cotton pad moistened with water.

Folk remedies (hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate and others) can burn the mucous membrane and cause more problems. They will not help with a serious illness, and are useless for prevention, so their use is a big question.

Special veterinary drugs for combating ear mites, as well as for the treatment of otitis media and inflammatory processes of the hearing organs should be prescribed by the attending physician. Using them at your own discretion is only permissible in an emergency situation when a veterinarian is unavailable and the animal is in severe pain. In all other cases, you must first identify the cause of the disease, and then get a prescription from your doctor.

Dwarf Spaniel. All about the breed.

These dogs have an affectionate and good-natured disposition and make wonderful pets. Dwarf spaniels are now practically not used for hunting and have simply become pets.

Like their larger relatives, they have a well-proportioned build, a small, beautiful head, a soft, silky coat and long ears, giving them a typical spaniel appearance. Their look is friendly and gentle, and their eyes are large and expressive.

Are there dwarf spaniels?

Origin

Dwarf spaniels, belonging to the toy breed group, have existed for centuries. Presumably, the homeland of these dogs was East Asia, from where they were brought to Europe by merchants or missionaries and presented to representatives of one of the European ruling dynasties.

These dogs appear in the paintings of European artists as early as the 16th century and are the personification of feminine charm. Dwarf spaniels were favorites of European princesses and queens, because they were distinguished by their small, comfortable size, affectionate disposition and cute appearance.

It was nice to keep such dogs in the boudoir and you could carry them everywhere in your arms. If this was necessary, then mini spaniels, being quite strong and resilient despite their height, simply ran next to their owner.

Dwarf spaniels were also popular because they were also used as living hot water bottles. After all, in medieval castles it was damp and cold, and traveling in a carriage in the winter was also not very comfortable. Therefore, noble people constantly kept these dogs on their laps, warming themselves with their warmth.

Over time, when the European nobility moved to more comfortable mansions in the Baroque and Rococo styles, their habit of keeping small spaniels in the house remained.

However, the popularization of other dog breeds, such as pugs or Spitz dogs, has led to the fact that dwarf spaniels have become rare. Some of these breed varieties were subsequently restored, but some of the ancient dwarf spaniels became extinct.

NOTE! There are currently four known types of toy spaniels: the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the King Charles Spaniel, the Papillon and the Phalene.

Moreover, the Papillon and Phalene are two varieties of the continental toy spaniel, while the first two breeds were bred in England.

There are also dwarf cocker spaniels, but they are not a separate breed and are considered purebred.

Appearance and character

The dwarf spaniel is a small, elegant and graceful dog with a regular and harmonious physique. The average height of pets of this small breed is 26 cm, and the average weight is 5.5 kg.

Their head is small, the cranial part, depending on the breed, can be either convex or somewhat flattened, and the muzzle is wide and flat or, conversely, elongated and slightly tapering towards the nose.

The ears of English Toy Spaniels are drooping and long, covered with silky hair, while those of Continental Spaniels are medium in length, drooping or erect, but always well-furred.

The eyes are dark, expressive, usually round in shape.

The neck is graceful, beautifully set, the body is short, the back is straight and level.

The chest is deep, but somewhat flattened laterally. The limbs are short, parallel, with regular joint angles.

The tail of English mini spaniels is set at the level of the back and is kept low, while in continental breeds it is thrown over the back and looks like a fluffy fan.

IMPORTANT! A characteristic feature of all toy spaniels is a long, soft and silky coat, short on the head, muzzle and front of the legs, but forming beautiful feathers on the ears, back of the legs and on the tail.

The colors are usually variegated: white with colored spots of various shades, tri-color, black and tan, but toy spaniels are also found in a bright, reddish-red color, called ruby.

By nature, all these dogs are cheerful, playful, intelligent, well-mannered and friendly. Although they have natural hunting instincts, they are generally good with other pets, even rodents and birds, provided they are properly socialized, of course.

Photos and descriptions of varieties

King Charles Spaniel

These small spaniels, whose name is associated with the name of the English king Charles II, were bred in England and were popular as boudoir dogs. Their image can often be seen in paintings by European artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, where they are usually depicted with their noble and wealthy owners, often kings or other members of ruling families.

King Charles spaniels are distinguished from other spaniels by their rather wide, flat muzzles, more typical of mastiff breeds. This is due to the fact that the fashion for short-faced dogs at the end of the 17th century also affected the dwarf spaniels of that time. As a result, the traditional, long-nosed type of these dogs almost disappeared and was later revived as a new breed called the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

King Charles are small dogs, with an average height of 23-28 cm and a weight of 3.6-6.3 kg. Their body is short and compact, the head is small and dome-shaped, with a convex forehead and a distinct transition to a very short and rather wide upturned muzzle.

The ears are set low, which, combined with large round eyes, wide and low set and a snub nose, gives King Charles the appearance of toy dogs.

The back is straight, the croup is slightly sloping, the limbs are quite short, even and strong. The tail is set low and does not rise above the line of the spine.

The coat is long and soft, forming feathering on the chest, back of the paws and on the tail.

According to the standard, only four colors are acceptable in King Charles Spaniels: black and tan, ruby, Blenheim and tricolor.

King Charles are friendly, affectionate and cheerful companion dogs who are infinitely devoted to their owners and are ready to do anything for them. They highly value comfort, as well as the love and care of their owners, and are perfect for keeping in an apartment.

They treat children well, but do not tolerate rough treatment. These dogs are not aggressive towards other animals and strangers.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

These dogs, essentially a revived breed of ancient toy spaniels, were originally used for hunting small game birds, but very quickly became just pets and a popular boudoir breed.

Images of spaniels, which are almost exact copies of modern Cavalier King Charles, can be found in paintings by Titian, Van Dyck, Watteau and other famous artists of the 16-18 centuries.

However, the fashion for short-faced dogs led to the fact that the traditional type of English toy spaniels with elongated muzzles almost completely died out, so that in the 20th century the breed had to be revived again.

The revival of the long-faced King Charles Spaniel was spearheaded by US breeder Roswell Eldridge, who in 1926 offered a special prize of £25 in silver to anyone who could produce the old-style dwarf spaniels that were depicted in paintings from the reign of Charles II Stuart.

NOTE! Eldridge himself did not live to see the completion of the breeding work and did not see its results. But several other breeders, also supporters of the revival of the old-type English Toy Spaniels, founded the first breed club in 1928 and developed a standard.

Official recognition of the breed occurred in 1955, when the FCI recognized it and registered it under the name Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Externally, these dogs are very similar to King Charles Spaniels, with the exception of a few differences, such as size and weight, set of eyes, ears and muzzle length.

Cavalier King Charles height is 30-33 cm, and weight is from 5.4 to 8 kg. Their ears are located above eye level, the muzzle is much longer than that of the King Charles, and the skull is somewhat flattened.

Despite the fact that the eyes of the Cavalier King Charles are just as large and widely spaced, they are set higher, which creates a friendly and gentle expression on the muzzle.

The standard allows for four color variations: black and tan, ruby, blenheim and tricolor, also called tricolor.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are famous for their affectionate, playful, yet calm and reserved nature; they are devoted to their owners and try to please them. These dogs are friendly, they are good with children and get along well with other pets.

However, despite their small size, Cavalier King Charles are quite resilient and agile, they love to run, play outdoor games, and even performed well in some sports.

But you need to take into account that it is recommended to let these dogs off a leash only in fenced areas, since they have a highly developed instinct to chase moving objects, including vehicles.

Continental Toy Spaniel

Depending on the shape of the ears, it is divided into two varieties - Papillon and Phalene.

Phalen is the oldest of the continental spaniels: his images can be seen in ancient medieval portraits by Belgian, French, Spanish and Italian artists.

The appearance of Papillons, whose distinctive feature is their upright ears, was not documented before the 16th century.

However, the new variety quickly became more popular than the traditional continental fold toi. And only thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts, phalenes did not disappear and are currently gaining popularity again.

The name "papillon" is translated from the French "butterfly", and "phalen" - "moth", while the emphasis in both names of varieties of continental toy falls on the last syllable.

IMPORTANT! Phalene and Papillon are small dogs whose height is 20-28 cm and weight 1.5-5 kg. They have a short body with a moderately deep, but slightly laterally flattened chest, a rather short back and a slightly sloping croup. The limbs are short, parallel, the angles of the joints on the hind legs are well defined. The tail is thrown over the back, profusely pubescent and has the appearance of a fan.

The head is small, the skull is somewhat rounded, but not dome-shaped. The forehead is convex, the transition to the muzzle is sharply defined. The muzzle is not too long and not wide, slightly tapering towards the nose.

The Papillon's ears are erect, set high and slightly rounded at the tips. Due to the rich pubescence in the form of a fringe and the variegated color characteristic of the breed, the illusion is created that the ears and sides of the head resemble the open wings of a butterfly.

The Phalene's ears are also set high, but they are not erect, but drooping, like other spaniel breeds. Due to the fact that the fur on them is smooth, straight and growing downwards, it seems that the ears of the Phalene resemble the wings of a moth drooping downwards.

The eyes of dogs of both varieties are dark and round, with a lively, moderately inquisitive expression. The nose is black, as are the rims of the eyelids and lips.

The Continental Toy Spaniel's coat is soft and silky, short on the head, muzzle and front of the legs, but forming feathering on the ears, a frill on the chest and pants on the legs.

The color is white with spots of various colors with the exception of blue; black and tan coat color is also considered acceptable. Papillon and Phalene wool are considered hypoallergenic, making them suitable pets for people with wool allergies.

By nature, continental toy spaniels are cheerful, friendly and sociable animals. They are well suited as family dogs, but when interacting with small children, care must be taken to ensure that the child does not accidentally injure the pet.

It is also very important that the Papillon or Phalene does not get bored when left locked in an apartment all day, as this leads to a number of behavioral problems.

Continental Toy Spaniels are very smart, agile, agile and hardy, despite their small size. They are willing to learn new commands and play sports.

Conclusion and conclusions

Despite the fact that dwarf spaniels belong to the toy breed group, they are not at all as delicate and fragile as many other miniature dogs.

English and continental toy spaniels, bred to hunt small game birds, retained not only the hunting instincts of their ancestors, but also inherited from them such traits as energy, agility, agility and endurance.

Such a dog will be an ideal family pet, because toy spaniels are affectionate, affectionate, not aggressive towards people and get along well with other pets and children.

However, it must be taken into account that without sufficient physical and mental stress, the little spaniel gets bored and begins to look for entertainment on his own, which leads to the appearance of destructive traits in his character and behavior.

FUNNY ANIMALS

Ear scabies

Ear scabies in dogs, or otodecosis, is a common disease that is caused by extremely unpleasant and harmful parasites. They settle on the inner surface of the auricle and in the ear canal. They feed on blood and particles of the epidermis. A few mites caught in a dog's ear cause only minor itching. But the colony grows, the animal begins to shake its head, rub its head against corners, scratch its ears with its claws, tearing them until they bleed. Permanent wounds and ulcers gradually form in the ear area.

The advanced form of this disease leads to damage to the eardrum, meningitis (inflammation of the membranes of the spinal cord and brain) and arachnoiditis (inflammation of the arachnoid and pia mater of the brain). Before treating your pet, you need to make a correct diagnosis. If the problem is only in the ear mite, then it can be dealt with using special drops “Otibiovin”, “Mastiet-Forte”, “Tera-delta”, “Aurikan” or “Otovedin”.

Tori Spelling

But this American actress was not as lucky as Bledans. Tori also had breast augmentation surgery, but instead of getting rid of her complexes, she gained a bunch of new ones. Apparently, the actress received low-quality implants, which after several pregnancies began to go back and forth.

Spelling's breasts look unnatural: the silicone beads are very clearly visible. And that's not so bad. In different photographs, the chest is sometimes higher, sometimes lower, and dips and dents are clearly visible in the area of the sternum. The spectacle, frankly speaking, is not for the faint of heart. Tori's example proves that sometimes it is better to accept yourself than to go under the knife and only make things worse.

Not only Spelling suffered at the hands of doctors: They only made it worse! Stars who ruined their faces with plastic surgery.

Otitis in dogs

As we have already said, ear mites can lead to the development of inflammatory processes in the ears, that is, otitis media. However, inflammation of the ear canal can lead to overgrowth of the ear canal. In this case, surgery is required; medications will not help in this case.

Allergic otitis media is another common cause. There are breeds that are more prone to allergies, but it can happen to any dog. In this case, the veterinarian relieves inflammation with antibiotics and prescribes antihistamines.

A tumor in the ear canal is another cause of inflammation. But the list does not end there. The cause of otitis may be a foreign body entering the ear or hormonal imbalance, water entering the ear.

Breeding

To be bred, a dog must meet all breeding stock requirements. A pair is selected only after passing operational tests and assessing the exterior.

There are breeders' clubs in every major city in Russia. Strict selection allows you to preserve and even improve the breed.

A Russian Spaniel will not be admitted to exhibitions if it has:

  • problems with bite, teeth, lack thereof;
  • different eye colors;
  • aggression or cowardice;
  • bobtail;
  • weakly expressed differences by gender;
  • absence of one or both testicles, their defects.

A deviation in height of 2 cm is considered a defect.

Origin of the English Cocker

The first spaniels were bred in the 19th century, but then there was no division into nationalities of dogs. Scientists suggest that the first spaniels got their start in Spain. In the future, people managed to create a separate category of dogs with hunter instincts.

The ancestor of the English spaniel is considered to be a dog named Obo. He left behind a significant number of heirs. And his son, with the same name, laid the foundation for American cockers.

At exhibitions these animals were called “field spaniel”, and among themselves people gave them the name “happy cockers”. Later, the official standard of English cockers was announced, and to this day four-legged dogs are bred according to its criteria.

In Russia this breed was not immediately recognized. On its territory, dogs of the Cocker Spaniel breed were not bred; there were very few of them. Subsequently, the popularity of these dogs began to grow.

Not only hunters, but also ordinary people who wanted to find a friend wanted to purchase such pets.

How to clean your ears at home

So, upon examination, it turned out that ear cleaning was necessary. What drugs can be used?

Any veterinary pharmacy will have a large number of different products that you can use at home:

  1. Lotion-soaked wipes. Convenient because you don’t need to wet the tampon with lotion yourself and be distracted;
  2. Hygienic sticks, with a cotton head soaked in product;
  3. Special absorbent powder. Very suitable for dog breeds with floppy, long ears;
  4. Liquid preparations available as lotion, gel and other forms. Effectively dissolve fat and wax in the ears, helping to remove them and disinfect them. Ideal for prevention.

Of course, a veterinary pharmacy is not always available, and the price is not always cheap.

You can effectively use what you have at hand:

  1. Chlorhexidine. A good remedy for removing odor from the ear. About 5 ml is poured into each dog's ear, dropwise and carefully. Then you need to wait until the dog shakes his head and remove the dirt using cotton swabs;
  2. Green teas and herbal infusions. They are very suitable for puppy ears. Not as aggressive on the delicate skin of the ears as others. Herbs should have an antiseptic effect: chamomile, lavender, calendula;
  3. If there are a lot of scratches in the ears, use boric acid. For example, I add it to zinc ointment and treat the dog’s ears;
  4. It is possible to use a human first aid kit. For example, if there is redness, you can use drops that are used to treat otitis media.

It is often recommended to use vinegar to clean ear wax. It is better not to do this; there is a very high probability of incorrectly dosing the concentration of the solution and causing a burn to the auricle. You should also not use hydrogen peroxide, oils, alcohol, or shampoos.

Vaccination

Russian spaniels, like other representatives of hunting breeds, often come into contact with wild animals. Therefore, an important point in the care and maintenance of a dog is timely vaccination. In the first year of life, this procedure takes place in several stages. Deworming is carried out 7–10 days before each vaccination.

The first vaccinations for Russian Spaniel puppies are given at 6–10 weeks, followed by booster vaccinations at 10–14 weeks. Typically, a complex vaccine is used for this, which will protect the animal from canine distemper, leptospirosis and other infections.

Rabies vaccination is also mandatory - it is given no earlier than 10-14 weeks. 2 weeks after the last vaccination, the puppy can go for its first walk.

Starting from 12 months, the animal must be revaccinated annually with a complex vaccine against rabies and other infections. Before this procedure, the adult dog is also dewormed.

Important. The owner should be aware that it is prohibited to vaccinate a dog that is sick, or pregnant, or in heat.

In addition, for some time after vaccination, the Russian Spaniel must be provided with special care: do not wet the injection site for 2-3 days, and completely bathe the animal no earlier than after 10 days. Also during this time you need to carefully monitor your pet: do not allow him to get wet or hypothermia.
