Shar Pei - a sociable friend with a fold
A breed of dogs with an unusual appearance came to Russia straight from China, embodying the exotic characteristics of the Celestial Empire. In ancient times, these dogs were used as fighting dogs, and today they are considered guard and hunting dogs.
Shar Pei age 4 months
Literally, the concept of Shar Pei stands for “sandy skin” and, in addition to the striking unusual folded skin, is characterized by such a distinctive feature as a black and blue tongue. The muzzle, reminiscent of the head of a hippopotamus, can also be called original.
These intricate characteristics are reflected in the character of the Shar Pei: although this dog is considered calm, loyal and social, it can turn from a cute bear cub into a brutal lion overnight. By the way, in the middle of the last century, the Shar Pei was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the rarest breed in the world at that time.

Breed standard
Shar Pei in the photo , and in life looks like a medium-sized square dog. In an adult, the folds are grouped only in the area of the head and at the withers, although they are also acceptable at the base of the tail, but Shar Pei puppies consist entirely of folds. An adult weighs 23-26 kilograms and grows up to half a meter, sometimes higher.
Shar Pei has a lot of extra skin
A characteristic feature of the breed is the ratio of head and body. The muzzle visually looks larger than the body, it is wide and has a specific flat structure. There is not even a hint of sharpness in it. As already mentioned, the breed has a black and blue or spotted tongue. If a dog has a pink tongue, it is not considered a purebred among breeders.
The dog has a scissor bite, and his dark eyes seem to be constantly sad or frowning. The front paws do not have folds, but they have strong and slightly sloping pasterns. Both pairs of legs are straight and muscular, and when trotting, the dog pushes off strongly with its hind limbs, making full strides. The dog's movements are graceful and strong.
The tail is characterized by thickness and curved towards the spine. In addition, it has a very high waist. If there is no tail, it is short or docked, the breed is considered defective. It is impossible to describe the Shar Pei without mentioning the quality and color of the coat. It is short and bristly, practically does not adhere to the skin on the body and only very slightly adheres to the limbs.
An adult Shar Pei is on duty in the yard
The fur may feel like horsehair to the touch. Breeders distinguish three variations of texture - “bear”, “horse” and “brush”. The length of the fibers ranges from one to two and a half centimeters, and the wool itself has no down.
Most often, Shar Pei has a monochromatic color, but the palette is very diverse - from blue-black to boiling white, with undertones such as fawn color. It is important to know that tan or spotted colors are not acceptable.

Are Shar Pei trainable?
When training a Shar Pei, it is worth taking into account a number of features of the breed: it is a hunting and guard dog, and therefore representatives have a set of specific instincts. In addition, they are willful, quick-witted, have high intelligence and a developed sense of dignity.
These dogs have good hearing and sense of smell, which helps in learning some commands, as well as a reduced pain threshold.
Many dog owners believe that training Shar-Peis is quite difficult. However, due to their developed intelligence and intelligence, these dogs easily and quickly learn the material. If you monotonously repeat the same commands, the Shar Pei may refuse to execute them.
In addition, the owner needs to have authority with the pet so that the four-legged friend tries to do what is required of him.
Classes will establish contact between the pet and the owner, which will make training easier.

Training and training a young dog
Even before a charming, plump puppy appears in the house, a person should worry about choosing a dog handler-instructor. For a young puppy, group classes in UGS (controllable city dog) or OKD (basics of canine training) are ideal. As a rule, such groups involve 7-10 dogs of a similar age, so the puppy can not only learn how to follow commands, but also gain socialization and experience interacting with their relatives.
Group training teaches the dog not to be distracted by stimuli
Since the Shar Pei is not a service breed, it will be enough to study the basics of obedience with the dog. This is necessary in order to feel comfortable with your pet not only at home or in a deserted park, but also in places where there are a lot of people, vehicles or other animals. The Shar Pei's high intelligence allows him to achieve good controllability; the main thing is to exercise regularly and systematically, that is, move from one learned command to another.
Basic commands for Shar Pei
In fact, a small set of commands is enough, which a Shar Pei dog must carry out unquestioningly and on demand. These include:
- “Nearby” - the movement of the dog at the owner’s left knee on a slack leash, without tension.
- Complex “Sit – Lie – Stand” - execution of commands both individually and in different combinations.
- “Place” - keeping the dog in a place specified by the owner (indicated by some object, usually a leash or bag).
- “Come to me” is the most important command, according to which the dog must come to the owner and sit at the left knee.
- “No” or “Fu” - prohibition of an unwanted action, for example, picking up from the ground or loud barking.
Restraint commands are especially effective when trained among several dogs.

Shar Pei diseases
Among the most common diseases of the breed are pyoderma, systemic amyloidosis, ringworm and entropy. Systemic amyloidosis is considered a hereditary disease and is characterized by difficult or impossible removal of protein from the body. Amyloid protein destroys the dog's kidneys and liver. This disease cannot be avoided if the puppy’s mother and father are genomic carriers.
Shar Pei requires daily walks
Entropy is an eye defect characterized by inward turning of the upper or lower eyelids. This is usually a disease of puppies that is detected before three to four months of age. Often surgery is required to eliminate the disease. Pyoderma affects the face and groin of a Shar Pei with a rash with ulcers. These ulcers merge with each other into erosion. The infection is caused by either staphylococci or streptococci.
Dermatomycosis is a fungal disease. Depending on the type of fungus, the dog gets either scab or ringworm. The dog's hair begins to fall out in clumps over the entire surface of the body and head, the skin becomes inflamed and festers. The disease requires a visit to the veterinary clinic, and it can be prevented by timely vaccination.
In general, with proper care, a well-chosen diet and preventive health measures, owners will not have to face any of the listed diseases. And if a dog is raised with love and care, it will delight its owners for up to 10 years - this is how long dogs of this breed live on average.

Care and maintenance
Caring for a Shar Pei includes activities such as bathing, treatment for parasites, cutting nails, and taking care of the animal’s teeth, eyes and ears. In general, you can keep this folded friend in a city apartment without any problems. He practically does not shed, is unlikely to chew on the owner's furniture, and knows how to patiently wait until he is taken outside to do toilet chores.
Shar Pei puppies are very cute
It is important that a special place is allocated for this dog in the room, located in the field of view of the owners and out of drafts. It is worth equipping your Shar Pei with a bed made from natural fabrics. You need to bathe your dog no more often than once a quarter, especially since the Shar Pei does not welcome water treatments.
The dog does not have a dog smell, so you can use fragrance-free shampoos, but strictly for dogs, not for people. After bathing, the dog is dried and all folds are wiped. Once a week, the four-legged dog needs to be combed, but it is not necessary to cut it at all. Every month you need to treat the skin with anti-parasite products, and after the claws grow 1 mm or more, they are cut, but not short.
It is recommended to lubricate the paw pads with cream after each walk. The most vulnerable organs of a dog are the ears and eyes - inflammation can occur in these places more often. Therefore, it is important to wipe them with damp sponges. To keep your teeth in order and prevent the formation of tartar, pieces of tomatoes, lemons or special bones will help.
Before adopting a dog from the kennel
Any pet with character and emotions. Call a friend who already has an animal if you have not interacted with animals. Relatives may have a negative attitude towards the decision to adopt a dog - convince them and get their consent. Walk the dog yourself, or arrange with relatives. Remember, the dog is usually walked 3 times a day. If you have children, they should be able to get along with animals. Teach them not to hurt your pet. The child should not touch the pet when she is eating or sleeping. You cannot scare or shout at the animal.
Breed characteristics and character
It is interesting that among breeders there is no definite opinion regarding the character of the dogs. Some sources indicate that a balanced, socially active, loyal and calm dog
This dog is considered an excellent companion for playing with children, although still under the supervision of adults. Other sources note that the breed, despite its cute appearance, is characterized by an assertive character and independent behavior.
Shar Pei is a strong, reserved breed
Therefore, at the very beginning of life together with this four-legged companion, it is worth setting priorities regarding leadership in the family. Otherwise, the dog will never be able to gain authority; accordingly, it will ignore the owner’s commands.
At the same time, all sources agree on one thing: adult individuals are distrustful of strangers and can be aggressive towards other representatives of their species. In addition, this dog is shy.
By the way, there is an explanation for this, related to the anatomical features of the Shar Pei: due to his deep-set eyes, his peripheral vision is limited. Therefore, dogs are often anxious and restless due to sudden movements or sudden cries.
The first thing to do
Plan when you will take your dog for vaccinations. Bring toys for him to play with. Prepare a place and train your pet to this place. Necessary things:
- Dry food,
- clothes,
- Shampoo,
- Oral hygiene product,
- Brush (comb),
- Claw clipper.

When should you start raising a Shar Pei?
As we said above, from the first days a puppy appears in the house, you need to teach him the rules of behavior. But education should not be confused with training. Training means that the dog will know and carry out various commands, and will also learn to understand how to react to certain stimuli. The educational process begins from the moment the puppy and the owner meet, and includes teaching the pet everyday life skills: reactions to a nickname and prohibiting commands, understanding the family’s way of life, accustoming to a leash and collar, toilet, walks, and games.
Raising a puppy can begin from the moment he learns to walk
Simply put, the mother bitch is the first to raise her offspring, making sure that the puppies do not make noise, do not fight, and do not crawl outside the “nest.” Some dogs teach their babies to go to the toilet in a diaper, or they begin to take older puppies out into the yard. Consequently, the owner only needs to continue the educational process that the mother dog began.
Training is introduced into a dog's life much later - at the age of four to five months, when the puppy can concentrate its attention and acquires some perseverance. Although the Shar Pei is not a hyperactive breed, it is impossible to ask much from a tiny puppy.
The ideal age for obedience classes is 4 months.
How to stop a Shar Pei from biting
It should be understood that for a puppy, testing something on its teeth is a way of understanding the world around it and nothing more. Therefore, you should not be too strict with him.
However, it is important for the young Shar Pei to understand right away that biting people is unacceptable. After all, a small puppy will eventually grow into a large dog, which, even when playing, can cause pain.
When the baby starts to bite, you need to scream, take your hand away and punish him by depriving him of attention. The puppy will quickly understand that he has done something illegal and will want his beloved owner to play with him again.
If this technique does not work, the command “Ugh!” should be given.
Shar Pei and basic commands
The optimal time to start basic training is 3 months. If you start it later, it will be much more difficult to accustom the Shar Pei to obedience and interaction with the owner.
"To me!"
It is better to learn this command in a playful way: the owner runs away from the dog and joyfully calls: “Come to me!” It is important to immediately praise the puppy if he approaches.
Another option: a command is given after pronouncing the nickname. Dogs often understand gestures well, so orders can be accompanied by a pat on the thigh. If the puppy does not understand what is required, you can lure him with a treat or toy.
"Near!"
A very important team. You need to start mastering it only after contact has been established between the owner and the Shar Pei and when the pet is able to perform endurance exercises.
Training begins with the help of a training leash. When repeating the command, the dog must be led so that its shoulder is located near the owner’s leg. A leash will allow you to control the pet’s position, and a treat in the owner’s hand over the dog’s nose will serve as an additional incentive.
As soon as the skill is fixed, the command “Near!” should be practiced without a leash. In the future, the training needs to be more complicated. Ideally, the dog responds to the command “Near!” should sit next to the owner and begin to move in line with the leg as soon as the owner himself starts walking. When a person stops, the dog must sit next to him again.
"Voice!"
It is better to teach this command naturally. For example, when a dog gets excited and barks with excitement. At such moments, it is necessary to repeat the command and actively praise the pet for execution.
There are other teaching methods. It is advised to show the dog a treat and then shake it over the animal’s head without giving it. An indignant dog will most likely bark, demanding a treat, and at this moment it is necessary to say the command “Voice!”
This technique is incorrect and can ruin the dog’s upbringing. Firstly, the owner teases the animal, which is unacceptable. Secondly, by giving a treat to a dog who demands his own, the owner, in essence, satisfies this demand
. From a human point of view, he will simply reward his pet for following the command. However, from the point of view of the Shar Pei, everything is somewhat different: the dog will decide that it is possible and necessary to demand what he wants in the future. And, since the owner gave up once, he will certainly do it again. As a result, you can end up with a disobedient and uncontrollable dog.
"Sit!"
The command “Sit!” teach with the help of tasty treats. To do this, you need to let the Shar Pei sniff the treat. Then you need to raise your hand just above the level of the dog’s eyes so that the animal can see the piece only while sitting.
Do not raise the treat too high, otherwise the dog may start jumping. If the dog does not understand what they want from it, you should give the command again and sit it down yourself, and then reward it with a tasty piece.
"Place!"
Give the command “Place!” necessary every time the puppy is taken to the bed. Subsequently, when given orders, you can simply point the baby to his corner.
It is important not to forget to praise your pet. In addition, the dog must develop a clear understanding that its bed is the safest and calmest place. Therefore, you cannot scold or punish an animal when it is there.
"Lie!"
The command “Lie down!” They are trained according to the same principle as “Sit!”, only the hand with the treat is lowered to the floor so that the Shar Pei is forced to lie down.
If the dog does not understand what is required, you need to help him by lightly pressing on the back. It is important not to overdo it with force, because the puppy’s bones are fragile until they are fully formed.
"It is forbidden!"
Say the command “No!” it is necessary strictly and clearly, but without anger and without breaking into a scream. It is important that the dog understands that this is an unambiguous and clear prohibition on action.
It’s better to start practicing with the help of a tasty treat. To do this, a treat is placed in front of the dog and a command is given. The pet will want to eat it immediately, but the dog must be stopped, cover the treat with your hand and say a command. The skill is practiced until it is clearly performed.
Subsequently, the command must be given in different situations so that the Shar Pei does not have the association “No!” only with food or a specific place.
The command is in the nature of a temporary ban. It is given to the dog when it is necessary to stop its actions, after which further resolution is still possible. For example, a dog climbs into a bowl ─ the owner prohibits it with “No!”, puts food on it, and then commands: “Take it!”
"Ugh!"
Team "Ugh!" ─ this is a categorical prohibition. For example, you definitely cannot throw yourself at people, damage furniture and shoes, or pick up anything on the street. After such a command there cannot be permission for the same action.
It is necessary to divert the dog's attention to yourself and praise it if it refuses an undesirable act. If not, they repeat the order “Ugh!” with increased intonation. If this doesn’t help either, give the command again, but this time with a jerk of the leash.
