the Yorkshire Terrier will undoubtedly suit you.
. Her small miniature size, light weight, sweet, good-natured face, long, slightly curled fur, shimmering in the light with different shades of colors, small ears and a lively, intelligent look - all this, undoubtedly, immediately attracts admiring glances and the attention of others.
But the most important thing is that this is a very smart dog with a lively temperament, fortitude and great tenderness and good nature. The Yorkie is always in a good, cheerful mood and is ready to travel with his owner anywhere, easily and naturally adapting to any situation.
Representatives of the Yorkshire Terrier breed love children; this dog is an excellent partner for active, fun games in nature. For older people, Yorkies will become loyal friends and companions.
If you decide to show your pet at an exhibition, then it will take a long time to prepare the dog for the exhibition.
. The preparatory part has several stages: training the pet to stand, show its teeth and move gracefully around the stage. Another important point is creating a hairstyle for an exhibition.
First, you need to teach your Yorkie how to behave appropriately at a show where there are a lot of dogs and people he doesn’t know. If your pet is a pet and only walks in the yard, you need to start preparing it for “going out” ahead of time. For example, take your dog for a walk to the store, to crowded streets, where there is a lot of city noise, bustle and people. It is also advisable to visit a couple of dog shows with your pet - the puppy needs to feel the atmosphere of the competition, get used to it and adapt.
You can ride your pet on the bus - holding it in your arms, in a car, on a motorcycle. It is necessary to tear the dog out of his usual quiet and calm home lifestyle and plunge him, without preparation, into the unknown and noisy world of the city, which will also be at the competition. This can cause an unpredictable reaction from actively offensive to passive defensive.

Breed description, standards and appearance
The first Yorkie dogs differed from modern ones by having a longer body, weighed 7-8 kg and were called Yorkshire blue and tan terriers. They quickly attracted attention, their popularity supplanted other varieties of small terriers. In 1886, their owners officially formed the largest English kennel club; after 12 years, the first York Terrier Owners Club appeared.
Exhibition Yorkshire Terrier
Breed varieties
The Yorkshire Terrier breed standard should not be heavier than 3.2 kg, as it belongs to the category of the smallest dogs. There are mini-Yorks whose weight ranges from 1.3-2 kg. They are divided into 2 subtypes: super micro (up to 1.3 kg) and mini with a weight of 1.3 to 2 kg.
The mini Yorkshire Terrier, unlike its larger counterparts, is endowed with great good nature, affectionate, and does not come into conflict with other pets of the family.
Note! Terriers have practically lost their hunting instinct and will not bark because of any noise outside the door, play chase with cats or pester other people's dogs.
There are several varieties of Yorkshire Terriers:
- Baby face York, translated as baby face. What helps him look like this are his large, bulging eyes on his short muzzle. Its expression resembles a human child's face, hence the name of the breed. The eyes are the most vulnerable part of the body; you need to constantly pay attention to them. They are susceptible to frequent conjunctivitis and injuries.
- Black Terrier. So named because the puppies are born pure black, which changes to golden as they grow. First, the head and muzzle begin to lighten. Only at the age of 1 year does the color of the whole body change; before that it remains black. Then the color of the coat begins to darken again and by two or three years it becomes completely black. Only the face and tummy remain light.
- Chocolate York Terrier. Considered shorthaired. Its fur is like brown plush fur. The dog's entire body is covered in rich chocolate color, from the nose to the tip of the tail. Puppies are born in different shades of chocolate, from milk to bitter varieties. To acquire the standard color, the terrier needs to grow up. Despite its popularity, the breed is quite rare.
- Russian Salon Yorkshire Terrier. Bred in Russia, it is popularly called the mermaid. A distinctive feature is the color of the coat, from cognac to red-red. The tips of the paws, ears and tail may have white and black inclusions.
- Beaver York. Conventionally classified as a toy terrier, it is now recognized by dog handlers in Russia. The Biewer was bred by a German breeder with a surname consonant with the breed; it was first presented at the exhibition in 1988 and immediately gained popularity due to its bright, unusual color.
- Biro York. The only difference from the Biewer is the color of the spots - instead of black they are brown. The terrier was also bred in Germany in 2004 from black and white Biewer Yorkies. The breeder proves that the new breed is the result of a mutation, but it is not recognized in Russia.
- Golddust Yorkshire Terrier. Also appeared in 2007 from a Biewer, not officially recognized in the Russian Federation, subject to breeding only in alternative clubs.
Golddust Yorkshire Terrier
Color variations
According to the standard, the structure of the Yorkie's coat should be absolutely straight, long-haired, silky, shiny, parted in the middle of the back. Terriers with dark coats usually have wavy coats. There are no curly-haired Yorkshire Terriers. The best wool is dark steel color.
The standard for Yorkie dogs is a smooth-haired, rich steel-blue color without any admixture of other tones and with bright tan marks on the chest. The terrier's muzzle should be golden or dark red.
Note! Now there are many varieties that do not meet the standards with light, dark brown, silver-gray, and white colors.
How are boys different from girls?
In appearance, boys are not much different from girls, the only difference is in the genitals and reproductive system. But their character is different. The Yorkshire Terrier male is more capricious; he needs a firm hand in matters of education and training. The terrier girl is more flexible. But both of them are quite mobile and cheerful. If you don’t occupy them with something, you need to prepare for peeled wallpaper in the apartment, chewed interior items, and scratched furniture upholstery.
Terrier females are more sociable, affectionate, and treat everyone equally well. A male dog singles out only one family member and demands respect from the rest of the “pack.” Be that as it may, everyone needs to be educated, regardless of gender and length of stay with the owner. Otherwise, the dog will become uncontrollable, unauthorized and cause a lot of trouble to its owners.
Some do not want to purchase bitches because they are in heat, fearing traces of blood on carpets and upholstered furniture. Female Yorkshire Terriers are very clean and do not leave dirty marks behind during estrus. But they sometimes have false pregnancies, and childbirth and growing puppies cause a lot of trouble.
Males raise their hind legs to mark territories. At home, male dogs leave marks only when they try to show their dissatisfaction with the lack of walks, lack of food, lack of attention to themselves and loneliness.
Note! If a male dog is untied, he will demand sexual satisfaction every 2-4 months.
Having caught the smell of heat, a male can forget about the owner and rush to pursue the female, not paying attention to passing cars or large dogs encountered on the way. He may be in danger, get lost, and not find his way home.
Boys and girls - who to choose
Which of them - a girl or a boy - is more problematic, everyone has their own opinion on this matter. All dogs are individual.
General position
Dog shows NKP (National Winners Club) are held in accordance with these Regulations of the RKF and are divided into the following ranks:
- Rank CHK (National Club Champion).
- Rank PC (National Club Winner).
- Rank CC (Candidate for champion of the national breed club).
Dog breeds that are officially recognized by the RKF and FCI are allowed to participate. Organizers of a monobreed exhibition are required to check all dogs listed in the catalog to see if they are registered in the country's Pedigree Book. At all special breed exhibitions, a ring must be organized for dogs, which must receive a description from an expert (judge) of the RKF.
Attitude towards children and pets
Yorkies do not always get along with other dogs due to their innate tendency to dominate..
However, they get along well with dogs and even lumps if they grew up with them.
Representatives of this breed only dislike rodents - rats and mice have always been objects of hunting for Yorkies.
These dogs get along well with children . They are united by curiosity and activity and enjoy spending time together.
Certificates and titles
In the ring, at the discretion of the expert, certificates may be issued and the following titles may be awarded:
- CW – class winner, awarded to the first dog in the class to receive the highest score. The winner of the class receives the title of JKCHK or CCC at single-breed exhibitions of the rank of CHK, PC, and at the CCC he competes for the assignment of CCC.
- SS certificate of conformity.
- USS certificate of conformity in the junior class.
- Yu.KChK-candidate for young champions of the National Club.
- Candidate for National Club Champion.
- Yu.PK is the young winner of the National Club Club.
- PC-winner of the National Club.
- J.ChK - junior champion of the National Club.
- CHK-champion of the NKP.

Advantages and disadvantages
In addition to their compact size, which allows Yorkies to feel comfortable living even in small apartments, and visual appeal, representatives of this breed have many more advantages:
- devotion and loyalty to the owner;
- ability to get along with children;
- ability to learn;
- friendliness, lack of anger or aggression;
- intelligence, intelligence and the ability to make independent decisions, assessing the current situation.
An important fact is the absence of undercoat in Yorkies and, accordingly, shedding, as well as the hypoallergenic nature of their coat.
NOTE!
Before purchasing a dog, allergy sufferers need to find out what exactly provokes an allergic reaction: if the problem is in the animal’s skin secretions, they should not buy a Yorkie.
Yorkies also have disadvantages, including:
- intolerance of loneliness;
- the need for careful and expensive care;
- imperfect digestive system, requiring a special diet;
- tendency to allergies.
Read more about the pros and cons of the breed here.
Yorkies also require clothing and shoes for walking in the cold season (shown in the photo).
At the exhibition
- You must arrive one hour before the event starts.
- Go through veterinary control (vet passport check, certificate). After which they give you a ticket.
- Registration. You issue a receipt for veterinary control and receive your number and catalog.
Recommended

Yorkshire Terrier: special breed exhibitions for 2022
Common diseases
Teeth are one of the Yorkies' weaknesses..
They often have irregular teeth and a tendency to form plaque and tartar, which leads to periodontal disease and tooth loss.
CAREFULLY!
There are frequent cases of conjunctivitis due to a narrow tear duct and hair getting into the eyes.
Another pathology characteristic of these dogs is distichiasis . This disease is characterized by the growth of another row of eyelashes, as a result of which the eyelashes grow inward, injuring the cornea.
If we talk about diseases of the musculoskeletal system, then most often Yorkies are diagnosed with Perthes' disease, in which the head of the femur is destroyed, which leads to lameness.
The first manifestations of the disease are observed at the age of three months.
A haircut
Regular grooming by a professional groomer is a common ritual for champion and show dogs. Those who do not participate in competitions do not need to cut their hair as often. Owners should shorten the hair in the upper corner of the ear and in the area of the paw pads - this will simplify nail care and prevent the appearance of fungus.
Before you trim your nails yourself, you need to thoroughly prepare:
- choose the right size nail clippers;
- stock up on styptic powder and treats (it will distract your pet’s attention);
- start the procedure at the moment of maximum relaxation.
After this, begin pruning:
- First, the living part of the claw is found. It is a blood vessel that is visible in the light. The cut should be at such a distance as not to damage it. It is safer to start cutting from the very tip.
- It is more convenient to trim the nails on the hind legs if the dog is lying on its side.
- You need to carefully monitor the shape of the cut surface: if it becomes oval, it means the living part is close.
- After cutting, it is recommended to sharpen the nails with a file to make them less sharp.
We must not forget about the condition of the teeth. Cleaning is carried out at least once a month. This promotes oral health and gets rid of tartar. If the latter appears, the pet should be shown to a doctor. Claws are trimmed twice a month. This is especially true for Yorkies who rarely go outside.
It is very important to take good care of your ears. They are inspected daily and cleaned once a week. To do this, use specialized lotions or wrap a bandage around your finger to remove wax and dirt.
Character and habits
Mini Yorkies are characterized by a more reserved temperament than other subtypes. However, it is worth noting that any animal has an individual character. Mini Yorkies can also be hyperactive, aggressive and spoiled. They love to be the center of attention and use tricks to achieve it. For this reason, raising pets should begin at an early age. Thanks to their sharp and flexible mind, they quickly learn what their owner wants from them and do not violate the boundaries of what is permitted.
Yorkies are considered excellent companions: they fit perfectly into families with children and become the best friends of retirees. Despite their modest size, Mini Yorkies are excellent watchdogs and guards. They are very attached to their people and react warily to strangers. On walks, Yorkies bark not only at random passers-by, but also at large dogs.
How to choose a mini and not make a mistake
In order to choose a healthy puppy, it is better to use the services of a nursery. The price of purebred Yorkies starts from 30 thousand rubles. for males and 36 thousand rubles. - for females. When buying babies secondhand, you may encounter unscrupulous owners and end up with a sick dog. Puppies are taken over three months old, vaccinated and healthy in appearance. There should be no abscesses, cracks or stains on their body. The living conditions of the parents deserve special attention. Dogs must live in a spacious room specially equipped for them and be fed well.
If a puppy is purchased with the expectation of participating in exhibitions, the nature of the color is of great importance: the coat will remain a monochromatic dark color. A purebred Yorkie should have some burn marks on its body. This does not apply to the head: lightening on the skull is considered a violation of the standard. The main criterion when choosing a baby is cheerfulness and activity. If the puppy is passive and does not participate in play, there is a high probability that he is not healthy.
After the baby moves to a new home, you will need to choose a name for the Yorkie. It is better to watch him for several days to find a suitable nickname. Sometimes the name is invented in advance or the one given by the breeders is left.
- Yorkie girls are called: Betty, Bonya, Vicky, Toffee, Candy, Mouse, Nyusha, Roxy, Fanny.
- Boys: Archie, Bagel, Harry, Marquis, Oscar, Ricci, Chuck, Chip, Chester.
A dog should not be scolded using a name until it is completely accustomed to it. This will cause negative associations, and the puppy will perceive the name as part of the punishment.
