Who are they suitable for? For which dogs?
- A paracord collar is suitable for those dogs that need to look impressive!
Paracord comes in different colors. They can be combined with each other almost without restrictions. This means you can create a collar for everyday walks under a suit, if you are using clothes for a pet, or for exhibitions. With a paracord collar, this piece of equipment turns into a reliable accessory that allows you to identify your pet favorably. - A paracord collar is suitable for cases when the dog owner wants to do something special or special for their pet with their own hands. City pet stores do not always have a sufficient and decent selection for your pet. Well, the creative process itself is doubly pleasant for a friend.
- A paracord collar can be additional and not the main one.
Many dog lovers start by making a relatively simple (light) dog collar. This collar is not removed from the dog's neck when walking. And if it gets lost, an identifier with the owner’s contact information will always remain on the dog’s neck. - When deciding whether to weave a collar for a dog, you should take into account the characteristics of your pet's coat.
If you have a short-haired breed, it is better to choose soft weaves and material so that the collar is comfortable for the dog. If your pet boasts long hair or even participates in exhibitions, then it is better to make a choke collar to make the fur less traumatic.
Can I make a dog collar myself?
With due patience and diligence, a paracord collar can be made not only by a beginning paracordist, but also by a child of 12 years old. So, “Yes! You can!”
We recommend starting with a simple collar. For example, an address collar. But this is just a recommendation. You can immediately weave something more complex.

Nowadays, hand-made products are very popular. Firstly, it is a way to show your creativity. Secondly, you receive a unique product and become its sole owner. And, thirdly, when making such a thing, not only the work of the master, but also a piece of the soul is invested into it. All these three aspects are very suitable for a dog owner. Your pet will wear a functional item, charged with a piece of your warmth, and at the same time, you will not find another like it.
We will make dog collar from paracord .
Paracord is a lightweight polymer cord made from nylon that was designed for use in parachute lines. The shell of paracord is woven from many interwoven fibers, making it relatively smooth. Paracord, made entirely of nylon, is quite elastic. It is also possible to make paracord from polyester.
Nowadays, the use of paracord cord is very diverse. Products woven from such material are strong and durable. to make a simple paracord collar with your own hands . To make it we will need: paracord cord (two colors) and accessories for the collar.
So, let’s start weaving a dog collar with our own hands (photos and step-by-step instructions)
We measure the required length of the cord.
It is impossible to guess the length exactly, down to a centimeter. It depends on the thickness of the cord and the density of the weaving, but the calculation is something like this: multiply the length of the collar by seven. (it’s better to take extra and cut off the excess at the end)
We make the basis for weaving. Between the two parts of the fastener there should be a distance equal to the length of our collar.
We attach the cord to one of the parts of the collar clasp, as shown in the initial fastening diagram below. Then, simply thread it through the second part of the lock and return it to the original fastening. We pass the ends through the first part of the collar lock. At the output we will have four cords. Cut one cord of each color.
1️⃣ Select an option
Collar weaving options
There are a huge variety of types of weaving.
The best option for a paracord collar would be to choose medium width weaves. For small breeds this is the width
2-3 cm, for medium breeds
4-5 cm. These types of weaving will be convenient for a dog on walks, without cutting into the animal’s throat, but will also allow you to combine several colors of paracord, which will make it a stylish dog accessory.
Nooses and semi-nooses are different - for which round weaves are best suited.
It should be taken into account that immediately after production, the collar may be harsh to the touch, but during wear and washing it will stretch a little in length (
0.5 - 1.5 cm), becoming much softer.
Do-it-yourself dog collar: the best master classes
A collar is not only an important part of a dog’s appearance, but also a necessary accessory. Among dozens of identical options, it is sometimes difficult to choose something suitable for your pet. Today we will tell you how to make a dog collar with your own hands. We have prepared for you four different master classes with photos and videos that will help you cope with this task.
With these step-by-step tutorials you can make collars for both small and large dogs. We will take simple materials so that you already have everything at hand, and you do not have to urgently look for something. Dog owners usually make sure that their pet looks beautiful and well-groomed: these collars will make your pets look just like that.
Option number 1: from lace
Owners of small dogs will most likely want to make such a collar, since it will be too narrow for large pets. We will weave the accessory from lace, but this will not prevent it from being durable and reliable. Go find your favorite color material and get to work.
- two long cords (take contrasting colors or different ones, but in the same color scheme);
- plastic or metal buckles;
- D-shaped plastic ring.
All fasteners and clips can be taken from the old collar. If it’s not there, go to the creativity and sewing departments. Something like that is usually always easy to find there.
Take the ends of two cords and cut each one very straight. Then heat each one with a lighter and lightly scorch it. You need to do this at the same time. Connect them to each other - do this immediately while they are still melting. Press them tightly together and wait for them to “seize.” Take precautions when working with fire!
To start making a braided collar, you need to secure the end of the rope to the buckle. To do this, pass a loop through it, and thread the loose ends so as to tighten it.
Measure the circumference of your dog's neck and make a mark on the future collar. Throw on another 1-1.5 centimeters, install a second buckle in this place.
Wrap the ends of each of the cords, throwing them over the fastening. Look how it looks in the photo so you don't make a mistake. At the same stage, you need to attach a D-shaped ring near the buckle.
The dog collar will resemble a bracelet using the popular macrame technique - it is woven in exactly the same way. Pass one cord through the loop at the top and the other at the bottom. Tighten and repeat the procedure. Continue weaving like this until the very end of the measured cord.
When you get to the opposite buckle, pass both ends of the cord through the bottom so they are hidden. Next we will make another layer of winding to make the collar thick and durable. Weaving is done in exactly the same way. Tighten the knot over the first layer of the collar and gradually work your way down.
When you get to the bottom, make a finishing knot on the wrong side, pass the ends through the loop again, and then tuck them inside.
Ready! Please note that it is best to weave a collar from a soft and thick rope or cord, but the dog will not like plastic or rubberized wires, although they will look beautiful.
You can make such a braided collar with your own hands for a large dog, but in this case it is better to weave it from one strong cord, and not from an “alloy” that can come apart due to the agility of a large pet.
Option No. 2: from nylon tape
Nylon slings (tapes) come in very bright and beautiful colors. Dogs easily wear such collars and do not mind this “decoration” at all. Making such a collar with your own hands is not at all difficult, so feel free to take on this master class.
2️⃣ Paracord
What paracord is suitable for a collar?
In general, our entire store is filled with paracord suitable for weaving dog collars.
This can be 550 paracord from any manufacturer. But we recommend the most affordable 550 paracord made in China. We sell only high-quality paracord, including those made in China. So it will do! And our selection is the largest in Russia.
Luminous and reflective paracord
And recently, pet collars with luminous (light-accumulating) paracord or reflective cord, which is simply irreplaceable for evening walks, have become popular. If the dog lags behind or runs far ahead, you will always see the place of its “dislocation”. But the use of such a cord is not at all necessary.
Which color should I choose?
What color should I choose? As a rule, choose colors that contrast with the color of the dog. For example, if you have a black dog, then the classic option would be to combine black paracord with something bright, for example, red, yellow, bright green, orange. A dark pet with tan marks will look great with a combination of dark coffee and yellow, sand, brown shades, diluted with bright orange. If you are a tourist and take your pet with you on a hike, bright, catchy colors, like bright green, red, and yellow, are perfect here.
Imagine and try.
3️⃣ Accessories
You have decided on the color scheme. What's next? Collar accessories!
In this matter, it is important to consider what kind of temperament your pet has. For large and active breeds, it would be best to choose steel fittings - metal fastex and welded rings. This choice will ensure safety - you don’t need to worry that the ring will loosen or the latch will come loose when tugging. Also, a paracord collar must be made with wide weaves; they will provide comfort and will not cut into the animal’s throat.
If your friend is calm, then accessories for ammunition can be chosen from high-quality, strong plastic. For such paracord collars, fastex collars with stoppers and the same steel rings/half rings are suitable.
- If you have a small breed, then a plastic fastex (strictly with a stopper) for the collar should be chosen 16 mm or 20 mm - only for a calm pet, in extreme cases you can use fastex 25 without a stopper, but you must understand that in this case there is a risk unfastening;
- If you are the owner of a large breed or a very active one, then we advise you to opt for rings or a chain woven into the collar.
For medium breeds or active small breed dogs, it is better to choose metal fittings; there are fastex 20 mm, 25 mm;
In this article we talk about collars with fastex.
We'll tell you about weaving dog collars with rings another time.
Step-by-step sewing of a harness
In order to sew high-quality wool or textile, you must adhere to the following scheme:
- To make the accessory attractive, the nylon sling needs to be sheathed with colored material. This can be done using a sewing machine;
- The stitching must be done both diagonally and along all free edges;
- the free end of the object is threaded through the ring and secured with a strong double seam;
- the second end must be attached to the buckle and also securely stitched.
Materials and tools
The materials required for the collar will vary depending on the manufacturing method.
- For a braided collar you will need:
- cord 4 m long and 3 mm in diameter made of fabric, nylon, leather or silk;
- carbine;
- small ring;
- centimeter;
- scotch;
- lighter.
- For sewing you need:
- nylon sling;
- fabric tape;
- fastex - a plastic latch connecting the edges of the collar;
- D-ring;
- threads;
- double-slit buckle – for length adjustment.
- For a leather collar you need:
- strip of leather: you can take an old belt;
- special knife for processing leather;
- half ring;
- buckle;
- awl or gypsy needle;
- accessories for decoration - metal rivets.
Step-by-step instruction
The method of making the collar depends on the material. Ammunition can be woven, sewn or made from leather.
We make a collar
The collars are woven according to the following pattern:
A textile collar is sewn as follows:
Watch the video at the end of the article.
Manufacturing instructions
To make the handle more convenient and fit comfortably in the hand without rubbing the skin, the wooden blank can be wrapped in vinyl (artificial leather). Prepare a piece of vinyl slightly larger than the handle and cut the blank into the desired shape.
How many meters of rope you will need for a leash is up to you to judge. It all depends on the size and character of the dog, on the distance at which you are used to keeping the dog. Cut two pieces of rope to the required length.
If you prefer a nylon cord, then in order to prevent its ends from fluffing and the cord from coming apart, it needs to be melted. Heat the ends with a lighter or a match (the flame should not be strong!). If you are using cotton rope, you don't need to do this; the cotton will burn but not melt.
Conclusion
Making a collar or harness from paracord is, of course, not the fastest process and requires perseverance, especially at first. However, if you approach this type of “creativity” with due diligence, you can not only create unique, beautiful and, most importantly, high-quality products, but also acquire an excellent hobby for yourself.
Well, then, after gaining experience in various weaves, you can move on to complex patterned products that will become a great decoration for your pet on walks, guaranteed to provide you with the attention and questions of other dog owners - “Where can I get one/How to make one?”
Just look at some of the intricate weaving! Simply works of art. And the best part is that you can also create a similar collar from paracord. You can't buy this in any store.
Try it! You will succeed!

This paracord cord collar is ideal if you are looking for a stylish, yet very strong and durable collar for your four-legged friend.
To weave it, you need to master king cobra weaving. It is very durable and even adds thickness and padding to the original cobra weave, making the collar more comfortable for animals of all sizes. And in our master class today we will tell you how to make a paracord collar for a large dog, so its length reaches 50 cm.
If your pet is smaller, you can calculate the required cord length and its consumption using this simple formula: for each centimeter, about 18 cm of paracord for the collar will be used.
Supplies needed for weaving a collar:
- Paracord 550: 6 m of one color, 6 m of the second color (to make a 50 cm collar)
- Plastic buckle (or metal, whichever you prefer)
- D-ring (metal or plastic)
- Lighter
- Scissors
Let's start with the classics
Now we will look at how to sew a classic leash.
For the one and a half meter version you will need:
- nylon or canvas tape two or two and a half centimeters wide and 180 centimeters long;
- durable carabiner with latch;
- for design, jacquard ribbon, approximately three meters;
- sewing machine;
- a thread;
- scissors.
We take the carabiner and insert the end of the tape three centimeters into the eyelet, wrap it inside. It turns out to be a hem of three layers; it must be sewn around the perimeter using a sewing machine, and then crosswise. In any case, we perform securing seams.
From the second end of the ribbon we sew a handle. To do this, wrap the tape around your hand and add three or four centimeters for comfort. Now we sew the ribbon with a hem, and you will get a loop.
Take the jacquard ribbon, fold it in the middle and cut it. We apply both parts of the ribbon to the base of the leash, while closing the seam next to the carabiner and loop. We fasten the ribbon with pins, then sew it on a machine. There you have it, a nice classic leash.
Roulette leash
Thanks to the internal mechanism, it twists and unwinds without sagging or dragging on the ground. A roulette leash for dogs can be convenient as a walking option for owners of small and medium breeds. Not recommended for strong animals, as the roulette mechanism cannot withstand sudden jerks. Such a leash can be tape or cable, but it is worth remembering that any roulette leash for dogs teaches the animal to pull. Unfortunately, this is the only model, the manufacture of which at home is almost impossible without specialized materials.
4️⃣ Creation
Weaving a paracord collar for a dog
We sorted out the fittings, chose the colors, found the instructions. Let's get creative?
You can weave without any tools. Especially at the very beginning, when you are just trying and learning. But later, when you are no longer satisfied with simple and narrow types of weaving, or the task is to weave several products, a paracord weaving machine will become an almost indispensable assistant in this matter.
We have some choice of options. You can purchase a machine just for weaving collars, or you can choose a professional tool that will allow you to create not only bracelets and collars, but even belts.
Let's consider the advantages of a weaving machine:
- Allows you to rigidly fix the selected length and the “skeleton” of the collar, saving you from such unpleasant moments as “creeping” of the weave along the length and twisting of the internal base cords, which easily occurs when weaving long products “on the knees”. And sometimes you really don’t want to re-bind an almost finished product!
- The weaving machine speeds up and improves the final result. Even simple weaving will look smooth and without distortions, because the machine ensures reliable fastening and uniform tension. This means you can weave for your dog, friends’ pets and (shhh!) for sale
- Some machines allow you to make not only paracord collars, but also bracelets. And if you try a little, you can get harnesses. Such machines have fastening options for fastex, carabiners, rings or loops for accessories-free products
