Catalburun (Chatalburun), or Turkish Pointer, Turkish hound, is called the fork-nosed dog in its historical homeland for its characteristic and extremely original nose divided in half. This is how the name of this rare breed of hunting dogs is translated from Turkish, the number of which, according to the latest available data, does not exceed two hundred individuals.

Maintenance and care
When keeping a drathaar, the owner should pay attention to some points:
Drathaars are not picky about their diet. The dog owner can choose what to feed the dog: natural products or specialized dog food, the main thing is that the food is complete and properly balanced. Drathaars are not prone to allergies. When feeding the Drahthaar with natural foods, keep in mind that the Drahthaar's diet must contain foods high in protein to maintain the dog at a high level of physical activity. The drathaar's diet should consist of 2/3 meat and 1/3 cereals and vegetables. The best fruits and vegetables to give to the drathaar are: apples, pears, zucchini, greens
It is advisable to include in the diet: cottage cheese, kefir, eggs and fish
It is important not to overfeed the drathaar; monitor the weight of the drathaar, it should be between 27-32 kg. The portion size of food you give your dog depends on the conditions of keeping and load; a street dog should receive more food
The Drathaar is a breed of dog that has a strong seasonal shedding pattern.
It is important to properly care for the drathaar's coat. Once every two weeks, the drathaar needs to be combed with a special brush or massage mitten.
The drathaar's beard and mustache should be washed as they become dirty. The drathaar should be bathed no more than once a month. Bathing too often will cause your dog's coat to lose its natural shine due to the loss of the fatty coat that protects the dog's coat from dirt. When bathing the Drahthaar, it is advisable to use unscented shampoo so that the dog does not lose its hunting sense. Drahthaar's floppy ears require constant attention from the dog owner. They should always be dry and clean. Dirt from the ears is removed with a cotton swab or damp cotton pad. If you notice that your Drahthaara is scratching its ears a lot, contact your veterinarian, your dog may have ear mites. Watch the drathaar's eyes, they should be shiny and clean. To care for your eyes, you can wipe them with a cotton pad soaked in weak tea. If the drathaar's eyes are very watery or purulent, the dog urgently needs to be taken to the veterinarian. In the summer, the drathaar's claws wear down on the ground on long walks; in winter, it may be necessary to trim the claws with a nail clipper once a month. The Drathaar is an active and energetic breed of dog, which finds it very difficult to live in a cramped city apartment. The ideal conditions for him are a private house with a large local area. Some owners keep drathaars in an apartment; in this case, it is important to provide the dog with physical exercise and be sure to take it out hunting.
- A Drathaar living in an outdoor enclosure must have a canopy that protects the dog from the sun and precipitation, and a kennel. The booth must be double-layered, with a vestibule; the dimensions of the booth must be such that the dog can stand in it at full height.
- In severe frosts, below -25 degrees, take the drathaar to a warm room.
- Drathaar needs long, serious walks; just a walk in the yard will not work. One walk should last at least 2-3 hours, the rest at least 20-30 minutes. It is advisable to accompany the walk with activities with the dog: run with the dog, throw a ball. Without serious physical activity, everything will result in the destruction of the apartment, aggression and stress from boredom.
- When walking in places where there is a possibility of encountering cats or other domestic animals, the Drahthaar should walk on a leash.
- The Drathaar is a dog created for hunting; if the owner cannot hunt with him, then he needs to find some kind of alternative that replaces hunting.
- The drathaar, like any dog, should have its own personal place where the dog should feel like a master. When the dog is in its place, no one should disturb or disturb it.
Mating
To produce offspring, dogs are “mated,” that is, a male is allowed to mate with a female in heat. There are many nuances to this, here are the main ones:
- mating a bitch with her first heat is unlikely to produce good offspring - it is better to breed at 2-3 heats;
- Males, as a rule, are ready for breeding at 7-8 months;
- Mating takes place on the groom’s “territory”, or in another convenient place. Under no circumstances on the bride’s “territory”;
- You need to walk the “newlyweds” before mating, but you shouldn’t feed them;
- The second, “control” mating is carried out no earlier than one day after the first.
Care and maintenance
Catalburun is not a pampered dog. She was accustomed to Spartan, or rather, rural life. From an early age the animal moves a lot. In summer and winter it is outdoors. Tolerates large temperature changes well.
The habit of living in nature does not exclude the possibility of an animal adapting to a city apartment. A high level of adaptability is one of the positive traits of the Turkish Pointer. Catalburun does not require special care; caring for it is simple:
- Like all fold-eared dogs, the catalburun needs to periodically inspect and clean its ears.
- It is enough to brush the coat once a week.
- General washing may not be done for months. Moreover, due to the nature of its activity, the catalburun often swims in open reservoirs.
- Claws are periodically inspected and trimmed if necessary.
- Veterinary care is standard.
Catalburuns are easily trained dogs with a high level of intelligence. Starting from 6-7 months, young animals are taken for hunting. Where they are taught to work on game, which prefers to hide among stones and tall grass. Rabbits, flightless birds, partridges are the main target of catalburuns.
The most difficult game, according to hunters who use pointers, are francolins or roaches, birds from the pheasant family. This partridge-like bird knows how to hide and skillfully uses its camouflage plumage. Turkish pointers find birds using their upper senses. Catalburuns have no equal in hunting for turks.
Birds such as turks are lifted on the wing by the catalburun, after which rifle shots are heard. Turkish pointers indicate to the hunter the location of rabbits or similar game, which freezes without movement until the last moment, by their posture. The dogs seem to turn to stone. At the hunter's command, they take off and force the game to run or take off under the hunter's shot.
Turkish Pointers work with top and bottom sense. An hour after the beast passes, the catalburun, using his upper senses, has a 79% chance of not losing his prey. By examining ground odors, that is, working with your lower sense, in 90% of cases you will follow the trail correctly.
Showing hunting zeal and excitement, catalburuns treat shot game without aggression. They don't tear or tear it. They have a “soft” mouth. This term means that the game that the dog brings to the hunter remains intact, not damaged, not broken.
How to care for a Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound?
- The fur
is very thick. These dogs shed twice a year, from two weeks to a month. Therefore, during this period the pet requires increased attention from its owner. Of course, the dog can shed itself, but at this time it will have an unsightly appearance, and if kept at home, it will leave a lot of hair in the apartment. It's up to you to decide, but it's best to brush your dog regularly until shedding ends. The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound will feel better and look good accordingly. For the procedure, you can purchase a powder brush. But, it is not as effective as the furminator, which copes with this task faster. This tool captures a much larger number of fallen hairs without damaging new ones. More often you need to comb the hair on the tail, neck, lower abdomen and hips of the animal. Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds need to be bathed more often if they live in an apartment, about two or three times a month. Shampoo is chosen according to the type of coat you want. Its concentration must be diluted with water. Do not use undiluted detergent concentrate. You will upset the PH balance of the skin, and your dog will experience irritation and dandruff. All soap products must be rinsed off thoroughly. - your teeth
regularly. Soft brushes and flavoring pastes will help you with this manipulation. For prevention, let your dog chew on specially designed bones and toys. Natural tree bones and sticks are strictly prohibited. The dog not only wears down the enamel of his teeth on them, but can clog his intestines with them and even damage the walls of his stomach. - ears
are often cleaned due to their poor ventilation. In addition, thick hair grows inside the ear of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound. To better ventilate the ear, it can be cut or plucked. All external damage to the ear cartilage is disinfected and smeared with herbal ointment, which heals wounds well. - The eyes
of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound have slightly drooping lower eyelids. Therefore, dust or foreign particles get into them faster. They need to be inspected regularly and wiped if necessary. If mechanical damage is detected, immediately take the dog to a veterinary clinic to see an ophthalmologist. - claws
must be regularly shortened when they grow longer than expected. Some dogs do not require such manipulation, since they wear them down themselves on hard surfaces, moving around a lot. Claws are trimmed with nail clippers. They can be cut down with a needle file or a coarse file. - Feeding
Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds depends on the preferences and capabilities of their owners. Of course, if you do not have enough money for adequate nutrition, then it is better not to start one at all. After all, how a dog eats is how it feels and looks accordingly. Just by looking at the condition of your pet's coat, you can determine whether the dog is receiving adequate food. If you want to feed your dog natural food, then the daily amount of meat per day should be from eight hundred grams to one and a half kilograms, if it is a large male. The meat is preferably not boiled or fried; it must be raw (scalded or frozen). The norm for cereal admixture is no more than two hundred grams. All cereals must be cooked. A couple of times a week, you can pamper your dog with a raw egg and low-fat cottage cheese. Natural feeding requires mixing a tablespoon of fish oil into the food and taking separate vitamins and minerals. - Walks
, if desired, should be at least one hour, twice a day. Dogs love to run and play outside. Therefore, choose a dog for them to play with. Those living outside the city should have space for free walking.
Nuances of training and interesting facts
Turkish Pointers are perhaps the most disciplined hunting dogs in the world. They are also very smart and understanding. Therefore, they are easy to train and train, especially quickly mastering hunting skills.
READ Turkish Angora cat - description of the breed
Despite the fact that dogs “with two noses” are a kind of exotic for the modern world, it turns out that the ancient Turkish “fork-nosed dog” is not alone in this world. There are at least two other types of dogs that have a bifurcated nose.
The first known such breed is the Old Spanish Pointer, also known as the Pachon Navarro or Navarrese Pachona.
The second breed, or rather still only a type of dog with a split nose, is the Double Nose Andean Tiger Hound. The Andean hound was first discovered by the English naturalist traveler and explorer Percy Fawcett back in 1913 in mountainous Bolivia, where he went in search of Atlandis.
Only in 2005, information about the Bolivian “double-nosed” dog was confirmed. Traveler John Blashford-Snell rediscovered the Andean hound in the vicinity of the Okahi settlement in Bolivia. Knowing the failure of his predecessor, who was unable to prove his discovery, John Blashford did not rely on chance. He not only photographed the discovered dog, but also managed to bring back an Andean hound puppy. The cynological world was once again amazed.
However, current researchers of the unusual phenomenon of a bifurcated nose believe that only descendants of the long-known Old Spanish Pointer, brought to South America by the Spanish conquistadors and brought to Turkey during the Abbasid Caliphate, were found in both Bolivia and Turkey. Who knows, maybe they are right. Only DNA research can put an end to this issue.
Kinds
Split noses occur in dogs of other breeds and outbred animals. This happens rarely, and is considered a failure of early intrauterine development, a breed defect. But in two cases, a forked nose went from being a natural anomaly to becoming a calling card of the breed.
- Turkish Pointer, also known as Catalburun.
- Double-nosed Andean tiger dog. It is also called the Old Spanish Pointer or Navarrese Pointer.
The Catalburun in the photo is hardly distinguishable from the Spanish dog. Breeders of Turkish and Navarrese Pointers claim that their dogs are highly sensitive to odors. As hunting and gun dogs, these breeds are really good. When advertising unusual noses, breeders forget that odor sensitivity is determined not by the nose or nostrils, but by the vomeronasal organ.
These breeds are clearly related. Breeders have a long-standing debate: which breed is older, who descended from whom. Detailed genetic studies on this topic have not yet been carried out. Only they can clarify the question “whose nose is older.”
Historical reference
It’s worth starting with the fact that all Turkish dog breeds are rare for the modern canine world. You can bet that most of your fellow dog walkers do not know such breeds as Akbash, Kangal, Kars, Malakli, and all these four-legged dogs come from Turkey. With the Catalburun it’s even more complicated; these unique dogs are rare in Turkey itself; even in Ankara, not many people know about the existence of such a breed. Fans of four-legged animals from the northern regions of Turkey will tell you about any national breed, but they will talk about Catalburun as if it were a mystery. What kind of unknown beast is this Turkish Pointer?
The casket opens quite simply. The Pointer is a gun dog for working on water and land. The four-legged animal tracks the game with the help of a keen sense of smell and vision, takes a stance, indicates the direction to the hunter and, after a command, either picks up the bird or drives out the animal. Let's remember the history of Turkey, what did its people do for a living?
At the stages of development BC - ceramics, agriculture, cattle breeding and, of course, hunting, but not guns (there were no guns then). Further, the Hittite kingdom was formed, and after Byzantium, in which the “fishing business” and trade began to flourish. Among the four-legged animals, shepherds, fishermen's assistants and guards were popular - everything is logical. Like all states, Turkey had wars, the struggle for independence and other vicissitudes, but on the economic fronts, in the northern, eastern and western directions, everything remained stable.
There is not much information about the canine history of the South, or more precisely, the southeast. What is known is that more enterprising people lived in Mersin province. Let’s not lie, the flat landscape also contributed to the resourcefulness of the “bipeds”. You already guessed that hunting was developed in this small area, and with it, the Catalburun dog breed was “born”. This is how the Turkish Pointer was developed through the efforts of one region. It is unknown which dogs served as the main ones. All we know is the time period for the development of the breed - approximately four centuries. How the data from the 1650s remained hidden from curious plant breeders also remains a mystery.
Saluki
Salukis are one of the most ancient representatives of greyhound dogs, used since ancient times for hunting. Some experts believe that this is the oldest breed in the world. Quite possible, since the oldest image of these dogs, found in an Egyptian tomb, dates back to the 35th century BC.
Among the Arabs, Salukis were considered as valuable as Arabian horses. The dogs lived in the same houses with family members, and to the hunting place they did not run next to the rider, but rode on horseback so as not to get tired. This is honor and respect!
Now Salukis are used not only as hunting dogs, but also as pets.
There are several types of Salukis, but they all have a lean, slender body with long, strong legs and a smooth coat, and a graceful head with large, floppy ears.
All Salukis are extremely slender and at the same time very hardy; they are able not only to run quickly, which is very important in hunting, but also to hold the prey until the owner arrives. Interesting fact
Salukis were included in the Guinness Book of Records as dogs capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h
Interesting fact. Salukis are included in the Guinness Book of Records as dogs capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h.
Salukis have a very temperate character, they are very attached to their owners and children, but do not tolerate rude behavior towards themselves. These dogs bark only when absolutely necessary; they love an active lifestyle and communication with their owner.
The price of one puppy reaches 40 thousand rubles.
Purpose
From the very beginning of the breed's existence, these dogs, thanks to their sensitive noses, were unsurpassed hunters. Their amazing sense of smell is still used today during the hunting season. For the pet itself, this is more of a game, which, however, stops as soon as the object of the hunt is discovered. The dog immediately becomes collected and signals the owner about the discovery with the famous stance characteristic of pointers.
The water element is not scary for the Katalburuns. They are excellent swimmers and can stay in water for a long time. Therefore, these dogs are especially valuable in hunting game birds. Who else can rush for prey into a raging mountain stream, if not the Turkish Pointer.
As a guard dog, the Catalburun is practically useless; it has a calm disposition and is not capable of experiencing aggression towards people. But he can become an excellent police dog. His remarkable sense of smell can be used to catch criminals, search for people, and at customs to detect drugs and other prohibited substances. In addition, a fork-nosed dog can be an excellent rescue dog. Its subtle sense of smell helps it look for lost people, find survivors after earthquakes or fires, and since the dog is not afraid of water, it can be useful in rescuing drowning people.
Charming
Character
The character of the Catalburun dog is also similar to the Pointer. Dogs are smart, quick-witted, moderately cunning, adore their owners, and love children very much. In the circle of their family, they are playful, loving, gentle, caring, sometimes slightly annoying and fussy, but this is due to an excess of emotions.
Most often, the dog is calm, balanced, self-sufficient, and it is not difficult to call him to order. He responds to respectful treatment; he should be treated only on the basis of mutual understanding, delicately, without shouting or rudeness. Still an aristocrat...
But with strangers he can be unfriendly and stern. In addition to the profession of a hunter, he gets along well as a security guard and a watchman. No one will enter your home without his knowledge and consent. The same applies to other people's animals.
If a stranger invades his territory, he will be immediately attacked. Moreover, the transformation from a “darling dog”, so calm and affectionate, into a barking “evil Cerberus” is carried out with lightning speed. He is driven by blind rage, and the dog enters such an angry state that he may not even hear your stopping commands.
The Turkish Forknoss is very trainable, matures earlier than other breeds, and is very inquisitive. Therefore, it will not be difficult to train him. This pet will be an excellent walking companion, comrade, assistant and family member.
Interesting Facts
- By the way, the same Navarrese pointers, which are considered the ancestors of the Catalburuns, gave rise to another breed - the double-nosed Andean hound from Bolivia, a dog so rare that it is difficult to even see it.
- These dogs are not only the best bird hunters, especially partridges. They are excellent customs officers. Their unique sense of smell is used during customs control to detect weapons and drugs.
- Catalburuns are one of those breeds that are susceptible to a split palate, the so-called “cleft palate.” This is a congenital defect condition; a dog with such “split” palatal tissue may be considered a defect.
- Some dog experts believe that the Navarre hounds were not the ancestors of the Catalburuns, but, on the contrary, they themselves descended from them. But Turkish fork-nosed cops are much older, and they appeared in ancient Greece.
Tips for choosing a puppy
The main problem is not buying a puppy (if only there was money), but the ability to find one. In Europe, only a few nurseries are engaged in breeding the breed and the queue for puppies is booked ahead. You can buy a dog in Japan, but there are problems with transportation. If you cannot go for the dog in person, there is a very high risk of getting a mongrel dog or saying goodbye to your show career despite having documents.
Offers to buy puppies “inexpensively” are a complete deception. Documents that supposedly confirm the breed's value were issued by strange companies that have nothing to do with FCI, RKF or SKOR. Simply put, there are plenty of cute mongrels and Jack Russell terrier mixes on the market, but Nihon terriers are not sold “by advertisement.”
If you are determined to buy a Nihon Terrier, the easiest option is to search for a puppy through FCI representatives. Representatives of the international federation cooperate with the Japanese Kennel Club, which keeps records of matings and registers puppies.
Price
The breed is very rare, if you do not plan to go bird hunting with this dog, you probably should not get this dog. He's not a lapdog at all. Moreover, to purchase it you literally have to go to Turkey.
It costs less there, and the breeders are more reliable. The average price of a puppy ranges from $700 to $1,200. And outside the historical homeland, the price can be absolutely anything. There is demand, but supply is limited.
Content recommendations
The Siberian Masquerade cat has a luxurious coat and therefore needs careful care. It is also necessary to keep the ears, eyes and mouth clean. A cat's health directly depends on the quality of its diet.
Grooming
The cat owner will have to pay attention to grooming, especially during seasonal shedding. It needs to be combed 3-4 times a week using a massage brush and a furminator.
If this is not done, the undercoat will become tangled.
You can wash your pet, but he is unlikely to like this procedure. Thick fur is difficult to get wet and difficult to rinse out after using shampoo. For this reason, the cat is rarely bathed - 2-4 times a year. To keep the cover smooth and shiny, it is advisable to use conditioner.
The Neva Masquerade should be brushed at least three times a week.
Hygiene of eyes, ears and teeth
Ears are examined once every two weeks. Excess sulfur is carefully removed with a cotton pad soaked in a special lotion. Eyes are wiped daily with clean sponges. The claws are trimmed 2 times a month by 1–1.5 mm. It is convenient to use not ordinary scissors, but a nail clipper.
Particular attention is paid to the oral cavity. Veterinarians recommend cleaning your pet's teeth of plaque every week.
To do this you will need animal paste and a baby brush. In the absence of one, you can simply wrap a bandage around your finger and carefully treat your teeth. To prevent the formation of tartar, the cat is given dental treats.
Features of feeding
Siberian masquerade cats are large, so they need more food than their other relatives. However, here you need to find a middle ground so as not to overfeed your pet, otherwise he will gain excess weight.
Veterinarians advise switching your cat to super-premium or holistic dry food from childhood. They are properly balanced and easy to dose. Adult animals are fed in the morning and evening. Kittens should receive food more often - from 3 to 5 times a day, depending on their age.
Some cat owners prefer to create their own diet from natural products. It is based on lean meat - rabbit, veal, poultry fillet. Among the cereals, buckwheat, rice, and oatmeal are allowed. Many cats are not averse to eating vegetables - carrots, cucumbers. Animals benefit from fermented milk products - low-fat cottage cheese, kefir, classic yogurt.
Your pet should not be given:
- potatoes;
- tomatoes;
- sweets;
- semi-finished products;
- canned food for people;
- salty, fried and fatty foods;
- snacks;
- milk.
It is important not to overfeed your pet, otherwise he will quickly gain excess weight.
Nutrition
The dog eats with great enthusiasm and is unpretentious in his diet. Just try not to accustom him to harmful goodies from the table. No sweets, pastries, smoked meats, canned food - all this is harmful to him. His food is lean meat and fish, vegetables, cereals, dairy products, eggs, vegetable oil. If you decide to feed him natural food, add vitamins and minerals. Don't forget to occasionally pamper your pet with a bone!
It is easier to purchase ready-made balanced food for active dogs. Preferably “premium class” or “holistic” (natural based). Sometimes, no more than once a week, you can give pasta and potatoes. And always keep an eye on the water in the cup. An energetic dog needs fresh and clean water.
What do our cats do when we're not around?
Let's continue our excursion through the network and continue to look at the 20 funniest photos with red cats. As a rule, our hustlers climb wherever they want, doing everything they can when we are not there. And we, as a rule, know about this and don’t let them down. Let's see what our furries can do when we turn our backs on them.
Amazing picture! The kitten in the owner’s arms not only snuggles, but sweetly eats everything she prepared for him in the bottle. Apparently, the mother cat is already far away, or has been taken away from her altogether. Thank you to the owner, she feeds her. And thank you to whoever captured it - for such a cool shot!
Rack
It means only one thing - attention, now I’m going to jump and steal something like that. This is the only thing that can be seen from the cat’s pose and eyes.
We see only something else in the expression of his eyes - well, when you (read - the owner) already leave here and, finally, I will do some mischief!
Redhead is clearly not posing here. But he looks like a model! Touches the pineapple leaves so tenderly. Great plan and angle! We see that the cat's movements are careful. But he's not afraid. Maybe you’ve even already tasted pineapple. But there are also saffron milk caps that you only serve vegetables and foreign fruits!
Hey, they caught me! With a fish in his teeth. The evidence is obvious, so to speak. But it’s okay, that’s what the thief looks like in his eyes. Now the owner will turn away and I will fly into the bushes as quickly and unnoticed as possible. This is where I’ll deal with the coveted fish. M-yow, how delicious! What if the cat brings fish to its owner, and we’re just imagining things...
And here we see the same picture - hunting for fish! The fur is already wet. Apparently the cat jumped unsuccessfully. Yes, and by
Or did the owner scare him away? Doesn't matter. The main thing is that there is attempt number... twenty-five? Oh, no one would ruin his hunt!
But we have never seen such a picture. That's it - nose to nose with the prey! I wonder what the cat thinks at this moment, when the rat sniffs him so trustingly? Oh, so these are both pets! But it’s still funny. Although it’s scary, what if the hunter’s instinct kicks in...

Newfoundland
Turkish van
The birthplace of the breed is the island of the same name, which belongs to Canada. It was there that it was formed, and later in England a selection was made and a standard was developed.
In the former USSR, they also did not ignore the beautiful dogs and tried to create their own breed called the diver. The idea failed: attempts to make the dog angry did not lead to anything good: the Newfies did not see the difference between someone else’s and their own and treated their owner aggressively. All that remains of the breed is its name, which is still in use today.
All that remains of the breed is its name, which is still in use.
The Newfoundland has a truly golden character: he is kind, loyal, patient and absolutely not prone to aggression. He readily serves people, devoting himself to the task without reserve.
Just like the Komondor, the Newf can sometimes ignore an order if it considers it inappropriate. Therefore, you should not jerk the diver without a good reason. But if a dog sees that a person is in trouble, then he will not need any instructions: he will make a decision on his own and act according to the situation.
This breed has a real passion for water. Therefore, trips to various bodies of water are real happiness for the dog. This breed will happily make friends with other pets from cats and rats to birds and reptiles.
Innate tact and super intelligence allows the diver to accurately understand the owner’s mood. And if a person is not inclined to communicate, the dog will not bother him.
Newfoundlands are sometimes called man-dogs. They also get offended and withdraw into themselves for a while until the offense goes away. Therefore, you should only punish a diver if there are compelling reasons, and sometimes you may not find them.
Training this good-natured bear is a fairly simple task. Just remember that there is no need to give orders without reason, for the sake of interest or in a raised voice. The Newfoundland is a highly intelligent dog and requires a calm and reasonable owner.

Description of the Catalburun breed
As already noted, this is a gun dog, which, thanks to excellent hunting instincts, high trainability and a sensitive sense of smell, was actively used for hunting game birds, mainly partridges. Like other pointers, the dog helps the hunter - he detects the game and takes a special stance, quietly showing the owner where it is. And then he carefully brings the wounded animal to him.
Catalburuns have external similarities with other pointers, but since due to their low prevalence the breed has not received recognition from the International Canine Federation, today there is no single standard describing the breed requirements and appearance of Turkish pointers. Therefore, descriptions of these amazing dogs are given only by breeders, of whom there are very, very few.
The modern Catalburun is a harmoniously built, well-muscled, agile and energetic medium-sized dog. It is completely covered with short hair. Even at a quick glance, the similarity with Old Spanish or English Pointers is clearly visible.
In addition to a sensitive sense of smell, the dog has the ability to develop great speed and move for a long time without breaking the pace. It is believed that they have no equal in Turkey when it comes to hunting game birds.
The dimensions of the “forknoses” practically do not differ from the dimensions of the average representative of the species, and the parameters of females and males are almost the same. The height of females at the withers does not exceed 62 cm, weight varies from 14 to 22 kg, males - 63 cm, they weigh about 18-25 kg.
The description of the parameters is as follows:
- The head is of medium size, proportional to the overall build, slightly elongated, with a rounded forehead, the stop is noticeable - it creates a smooth line without sharp transitions. The occipital protuberance is well developed, the bridge of the nose is of decent width.
- The muzzle is uniform along almost the entire length, ending in a large lobe with a clearly bifurcated deep groove. This structure is not pathological in nature and is in no way connected with the congenital developmental anomaly - cleft palate (cleft lip), which occurs not only in humans, but also in animals, including dogs. In some representatives of the breed, the two parts of the nose may not touch, in which case it seems that the Pointer has two noses. As already o is the main breed characteristic of the Catalburuns. Some experts suspect that this feature is the result of severe inbreeding. The color of the unusual lobe depends on the color of the coat.
- The dog's lips are soft, thin, creating small jowls, giving the dog a confident, serious appearance. The jaws are strong, with a strong grip, the teeth are complete, covered with white, strong enamel, and close into a regular “scissor” bite.
- The eyes are not small, oval or almond-shaped, medium deep, widely spaced. The color of the iris can be any, but usually it is in harmony with the overall appearance of the animal.
- The ears are located high and look like triangles with rounded ends. The form is hanging. The ears are not fleshy, rather thin; when the dog is calm, they hang below the lower jaw.
- The head goes into a high-set, muscular, medium-length neck; there is no dewlap. The body is slightly elongated, but there are individuals with a denser build, their body is close to a square format.
- The bones are strong, strong, the chest is well developed.
- The back is not short, moderately wide, the back line is straight and even. Continuing into a muscular lumbar girdle and a wide, sloping croup. The belly line is tight.
- The tail is set high, dry, elastic and flexible, and when at rest reaches the hock joints. Often, owners of “fork-nosed dogs” prefer to dock the dog’s tail, but in this case, 3/4 of the length remains.
- The limbs are straight, well muscled - especially the hind limbs, with strong bones. The paws are round in shape, compactly gathered into a ball, the toes are well developed and tightly pressed.
Coat quality and possible colors
The entire body of the Turkish Pointer is evenly covered with coarse, short hair. The hair is thin, elastic, and the natural shine of the coat is visible. Colors are not strictly regulated and, if you are lucky, you can meet a catalburun with any coat color.
More often than not, the main color of the coat of these dogs is white, with small dark patches scattered throughout the body. With light colors, dogs often have clearly defined, bright, monochromatic spots - reddish, brown, reddish-brown or dark brown, even almost black.
Dog with a rat face breed photo ⋆ Online magazine for women
The Bull Terrier breed has received a special status - it is called “the dog with a rat face.” With its appearance, it caused conflicting opinions in the world community. She was prescribed the characteristics of a killer dog and at the same time she was considered a reliable friend and guard.
Origin story
The founder of the breed is the Englishman James Hinks. Thanks to him, experimental fighting dog puppies with an elongated rat muzzle were born. The exterior of bull terriers was formed as a result of 10 years of crossing the extinct breed of white terrier and English bulldog, with admixtures of Dalmatian blood.
The main goal - to get a fearless dog with a high pain threshold - was achieved. The beauty and aesthetics of the animal’s external appearance were not considered.
At the end of the 19th century, the breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club. At the beginning of the 20th century it was allowed to reproduce. Keeping a bull terrier has become a prestigious occupation that emphasizes social status.
Bull Terrier - description
Previously, this breed of dog was used for baiting wild animals and dog fighting. Since the ban on bloody spectacles, the breed has come a long way of socialization and managed to adapt to the requirements of modern people.
The Bull Terrier today is a loyal friend, a cheerful companion and an active athlete. Myths about its mortal danger have been dispelled. He is the embodiment of intelligence, endurance, strength and dexterity. His extraordinary appearance makes him look like a giant rat. The photo of a dog with a rat's face confirms this.

Breed standard
The Bull Terrier has an international breed standard, deviations from which are considered a fault:
- The body is athletic, muscular, strong.
- The head is oval, ovoid in shape.
- The muzzle is elongated, arched.
- The neck is strong.
- The jaws are powerful, the compression force is 25 atmospheres.
- The mouth is big.
- The bite of the teeth is cross-shaped.
- The ears are erect, V-shaped, close set.
- The nose is pronounced and large.
- The eyes are small, triangular in appearance, slanted, wide and deep set.
- The tail is short and not docked.
- Average weight 30 kg, not limited by standard.
- Height at withers is from 40 to 55 cm. Males are larger than females.
- Life expectancy is 12-14 years.
Character and education
The nature of the “boules” is specific. They have an extraordinary mind and can read a person’s thoughts. From the first days, it is necessary to extinguish the foci of their aggression and direct the strength and energy of the dogs in the right direction. With proper upbringing of a puppy and its early socialization, a good friend and protector will grow up.
Bull Terriers are hyperactive and require long-term physical and mental training. They are willful and stubborn. They are not characterized by cowardice and betrayal. Ready to protect the owner at the cost of life. Affectionate in the family, loyal to children and powerful in the world around them. Any representatives of the fauna are treated as prey. Walking without a leash is prohibited.
Training
Training a Bull Terrier requires a lot of time and effort. To achieve results, strict and humane methods are needed. Physical punishment is prohibited; the bull remembers insults. These dogs need the strong-willed hand of a competent breeder. Otherwise, you can get an uncontrollable and dangerous animal.
Care and maintenance
In terms of grooming, the Bull Terrier is not difficult, he is clean:
- Brush the coat with a rubber mitten 2-3 times a week, daily during the shedding period.
- Clean your ears once a week.
- Wash your eyes daily.
- After walking, wipe with a damp towel.
- Bath with shampoo as needed.
- Trim the claws.
exclusively domestic, preferably to a family without children. Aviary and chain housing breaks the animal’s psyche and leads to its aggression. The bull is afraid of the cold; at temperatures below -10, walk in clothes. During the hot season, refrain from exposing your pet to the sun.
Diseases
High-quality representatives of the breed have strong immunity. Hereditary diseases include:
- partial or complete deafness;
- loss of vision;
- kidney diseases.
Other diseases arise due to poor care and maintenance (dermatitis, heart failure, pancreatitis).
Origin of the Bull Terrier breed
The homeland of the Bull Terrier breed is Great Britain. For the first time, dogs with an elongated, rat-like muzzle appeared in the middle of the 19th century as a result of many years of experiments. To create the breed, English bulldogs, white English terriers and Dalmatians were crossed. From all these breeds the dog has adopted the best traits - endurance, activity, courage, intelligence.
Origin story
The first mention of such dogs dates back to the 17th century. It is believed that for several hundred centuries, catalburuns were found everywhere in the province of Mersin, less often in neighboring ones. By the way, the province is also famous for the fact that Mark Antony presented it to Cleopatra as a wedding gift.
In Turkey, the Catalburun is a local hunting dog. No scientific research has been conducted on the breed. The only work belongs to the hand of Taras Mustafa Kemal, a biology teacher at an Anatolian high school. Under his leadership, the students made a description of 80 dogs and conducted a comparative analysis. Kemal later submitted a petition to the provincial department of agriculture in order to register the breed group, but so far this has not yielded results.
The breed got its name from two Turkish words: catal - “fork” and burun - “nose”.
Catalburuns have been bred in Tarsus and surrounding villages for many years. According to dog experts, today there are only about 200 purebred representatives of the breed in the world. About 20 of them are in the nursery in Tarsus.
The breeders plan that in the future the breed will be officially recognized, which will contribute to its development and spread.
Purpose
The Catalburun is considered one of the best search dogs in the world. The forked nose allows him to smell better and makes him unique in his own way. In his work, the catalburun uses both upper and lower senses. Makes a typical pointer stance. Almost all dogs freeze and about 80% of them also raise their paw. They are passionate and silent at work. Having smelled game, they point to its location with a stance. In addition to hunting, the catalburun can be used as a bloodhound by the police or customs.
Video about the dog breed Catalburun (Turkish Hound):
Description and features
If you look at the catalburun in profile, you won’t see anything unusual. An ordinary fine dog, slender, strong, clearly related to hounds, or more precisely, to pointers. That's what they call her - the Turkish Pointer. But if you look at the front of this dog’s face, you will be very surprised.
Here a surprise awaits you - a bifurcated nose, sometimes so much so that the two halves of this organ do not touch each other. It looks very unusual and even strange. The dog was named catalburun (chatalburun) precisely because of its nose. Translated from Turkish, “burun” is a nose, and “katal” (“chatal”) is a fork. In other words, this is a fork-nosed dog. To be more precise, a Turkish fork-nosed pointer.
The Catalburun dog has an excellent sense of smell, even with such a nose! For hunters, rescuers and police, such a dog is just a treasure. But the main problem is that this breed is still not recognized by the International Canine Association. Therefore, its cultivation and promotion is an activity for the elite.
But it would seem, why does she need certificates? Her document is an aristocratic appearance. In terms of build and appearance, it most closely resembles an English pointer. Catalburuns have the same short, hard hair, drooping ears, slender, strong body, endurance, and speed. Weight is approximately from 15 to 30 kg. The height of females and males varies slightly, on average reaching 45-63 cm at the withers.
The calling card of this breed is the famous sculpted stance. The forknos in a special position freezes at the sight of game, pointing to it to the owner. You look at a dog frozen in a hunting pose, and it seems that in front of you is a postcard from an old album called “Katalburun in the photo during the hunt.”
The Catalburun breed does not have a standard, so these dogs can come in different colors and even vary in size. The only thing I can add is that freckled dogs with the main coat color of a light gray or white shade are most often popular.
Hemp or small spots can be of completely different colors - red, yellow, red, brown, dark gray, brown, black. We referred to the similarity with pointers, so a few words about this wonderful breed, since they can be mistaken for distant relatives of our dog.
The English Pointer is an old British breed of pointing dog; the first mention of them dates back to the mid-17th century. These dogs were bred specifically for hunting and were used mainly for this purpose. The characteristic appearance of a smooth-haired slender dog, hanging ears, grace and elegance, as well as a noble pedigree are the main characteristics of this glorious breed.
And also, of course, the famous hunting stance with one paw raised, head lowered and fur raised. This is how they “mark” the found game for the owner. A dog entering the royal court. Perhaps many people do not have such a famous pedigree.
The standard color is one- and two-color. Single-color specimens come in red, coffee, black and all shades of fawn. Two-colored - black-piebald, coffee-piebald, yellow-piebald, red-piebald. The character, external parameters, behavior and working qualities are very close to our fork-nosed dog.
Well, a few words about another dog, the Old Spanish Pointer, whose appearance is especially close to our hero. This is a very rare breed of dog, so few people know about it. The most distinctive feature, in addition to all the qualities inherent in pointers, is the same forked nose as that of the Turkish catalburun.
Characteristics of Bracco Italiano
The main breed characteristics are enshrined in standard No. 202 of the International Canine Federation, the latest edition of which dates back to 2015. In the classification of the organization, Braccos are assigned to the 7th group “Cops” and the 1st section “Continental Cops”. Representatives are distinguished by a strong and harmonious body structure, visually they are quite large. The weight of an adult is 25–40 kg, and the height at the withers is 55–62 cm for females and 58–67 cm for males. The official document indicates the only purpose of the breed - hunting.
The Italian Braccus is a hunting dog whose main purpose is to track and bring back game birds.
The appearance of the Italian cop is quite specific; it is easy to recognize thanks to its typical features:
- the dog's head is angular, with a noticeable convexity of the forehead and occipital protuberance;
- the nose is large, correlates with the coat color and can be of any shade from pinkish flesh to dark brown;
- limbs are tall, preferably thin and with well-developed muscles;
- the eyes are in a medium position (not deep, do not protrude), rather large, with an iris in shades of brown, but not too light;
- the ears are long, drooping (should reach the tip of the nose without stretching), their width should be at least half of the length;
- the line of the spine should be straight and only slightly rounded closer to the tail;
- the body is toned, with a broad chest and well-developed muscles;
- the tail is thick at the base and is positioned horizontally when the animal moves. According to tradition, it is often docked, leaving 15–25 cm;
- the limbs are strong, muscular, oval-shaped paws with claws curved towards the ground.
Despite the rather large body, the movements of the Bracco Italiano are free and fast, with a powerful push and a large scope. The fur covering the dog's body is short, thick and shiny. According to the standard, the main color is white with spots of different sizes or specks, which can be from light to dark brown. This is the most preferred option, but the dog can also be one color (white or chestnut). A symmetrical mask on the face is welcome, but its absence is not considered a big disadvantage.
The movements of Italian braccas are sweeping and strong.
The character and psyche of the Bracques
Bracco Italiano is an energetic and calm dog, but not without stubbornness. Dogs of this breed are well trained and, with the right approach, are obedient and respectful towards their owner. They are friendly and get along well with both children and other pets in the same home.
Representatives of the breed are excellent companions, they are smart and loyal. They simply need significant physical activity and activity, so they become very animated when they find themselves in an open area and get the opportunity to run around to their heart's content. At its core, he is a passionate hunter with excellent instincts, so he must be given the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities, at least in training.
When raising such a dog, it is important to avoid cruel and rude attitudes; cops are very sensitive. If a balanced dog is offended, he can become uncontrollable. A similar outcome can occur in the absence of regular and intense physical activity.
For this reason, it is better for an experienced person to start an Italian marriage; a beginner who is not familiar with the characteristics of cops may not be able to cope

Disadvantages and disqualifications
Any deviation from the standard is considered a minus, and its impact is greater the more pronounced it is. The following are considered serious problems:
- malocclusion;
- a large amount of excess skin, which causes unnecessary folds to form on the head;
- height deviation of more than 2 cm, both downward and upward.
Significant deviations from the norms are grounds for disqualifying a dog:
- impaired psyche, excessive aggression or, conversely, cowardice;
- split nose;
- incorrect location of the craniofacial bones;
- everted eyelid;
- black color on the coat, tri-color;
- albinism (congenital absence of the pigment melanin, which causes the skin and fur to have no color).
Hyena dog
The second name of this rare breed is the painted wolf. What caused it immediately becomes clear, since such a bizarre coloring in the dog world will not be found anywhere else. This representative of the animal world is clearly a predator, since the teeth are much larger and more powerful than those of other species.
Wild dogs are very socially inclined: they always choose a leader, who is considered an indisputable authority. At the same time, they have a special relationship with their offspring; we still need to look for such caring parents in the dog world. Until the puppies eat, the adults will not touch the food. At the same time, painted wolves are extremely prolific: one litter can have up to 22 puppies.
The spots of each individual have a special, non-repeating pattern. For them, this is analogous to a person’s fingerprint. By coloring, they unmistakably recognize their children, even if years have passed since the separation.
Tibetan mastiff
One of the oldest dog breeds, whose amazing qualities were admired by Aristotle, Marco Polo and many other famous personalities. Moreover, both the physical data of representatives of this breed and their mental abilities evoke admiration.
Since ancient times, Tibetan mastiffs have guarded Tibetan monasteries and were used by local nomads and traders during crossings of the Himalayas. They came to Europe only in the second half of the 19th century and did not receive much distribution here.

Cute Tibetan Mastiff puppies
Physically these are very large dogs. A male Tibetan mastiff can weigh up to 80 kg, and his height at the withers reaches 70–80 cm. Such giants need open air - thanks to their very thick and long hair, they feel comfortable outside even in severe frosts. This is an ideal guard dog. They even prefer to sleep during the day, staying awake at night.
At the same time, raising these animals requires a good understanding of canine psychology - any dog, being poorly trained, becomes dangerous and uncontrollable, and in the case of such a giant, this is fraught with dire consequences. This is probably the reason for the very low prevalence of representatives of this breed.
Turkish Kangal
In Turkey there is a breed of dog with incredible strength and power and it is called the Turkish Kangal.
The Kangal dog is a very ancient Turkish herding dog. Turkish cattle breeders love their assistant very much, because he can easily maintain discipline in the herd and protect his herd from various predators. A dog of this breed is very calm and not aggressive like other Turkish breeds. Kangal will only release his teeth when necessary. This dog is quite strong and energetic and you can’t work all day without getting tired.
The Kangal dog is not a pet at all. Without a doubt, he loves his owner and loves to spend all his time with him, but you should understand that he is mainly a working dog, and only then a pet. Since ancient times, the Kongal has developed a desire to work and is unlikely to be happy lying on the couch all day and idle. Without work, your pet may begin to actively misbehave and you will not like it very much.
Keeping a Kangal in a city apartment is like keeping a dog in a cramped cage, so it needs a lot of space. The Turkish Kangal dog is extremely distrustful of people unfamiliar to him, and these are people with whom the owner has not introduced the dog, so the dog is ideal for protection; besides, it will dispel its instinct in a very interesting way. The most important thing when training is to let the dog understand that you are in charge here and no one else.
Appearance
The Kangal dog breed looks quite good, a tall dog of a strong build, with a strong body, powerful neck and stable limbs. The height of the dog reaches 70 - 90 cm, weight from 35 to 75 kg. The coat of this dog breed is thick and short, with a thick undercoat.
The color of the kangal can be gray-yellow, gray-brown or brown-yellow. Such a dog cannot have a white color. The Kangal's movements are free and energetic; when walking, the Kangal holds its head and neck in line with its back, which may make it seem like the dog is not walking, but sneaking.
Personality The Kangal is a dog with an independent character. Such a dog obeys the one it respects - and they only respect their owner or the one in whom they feel inner strength. It is best not to use physical violence in raising a Kangal - it can become angry and you will not love such a dog. If you want to achieve something from your dog, then you need patience and insistence to understand how to teach your dog simple but very important commands.
You also need to let the dog communicate with other dogs and people so that it is calm and manageable. The dog does not experience aggression towards children, and even allows itself to be caressed and stroked; it can play various games with them. But you also need to be careful, since the dog is not small and can touch something and drop it, which you will not like at all.
Kangal is not a domestic dog
Kangal dog - the price of which is quite satisfactory from 15 to 25 thousand rubles. Many people ask why the Kangal cannot live at home. Firstly, this is a fairly large breed of dog. Secondly, she is very energetic and needs more space and fresh air. Thirdly, its real purpose is to herd livestock. She has been doing shepherd work for a very long time, and if she has nothing to do, then she may simply start misbehaving.
Proper care The Kangal dog breed is simply ideal for guarding your home. It does not require any incredible care and can easily tolerate both heat and cold. It’s best not to keep him on a leash; try to provide him with freedom in the territory of your home.
Feeding your dog is an important part of caring for your dog. It is best to prepare nutritious food for your dog from meat or fish; it is also good to give vegetables and those foods that you eat yourself. As for purchased food, the amount of dry dog food should not exceed the dose indicated on the label of the food bag. Advance dog food is currently considered the best and highest quality product.
