Classification of dogs into groups is used all over the world to separate them by specialization, size, coat type and other important criteria. Thanks to her, the future owner can easily choose a pet for himself, based on his wishes and capabilities.
Despite international standards, some countries have their own rating system, and it differs from the accepted model. This feature must be taken into account, especially if you plan to breed the breed or participate in dog shows.
What is FCI?
To understand what standards exist for different dog breeds , you need to understand what characteristics unite them into the concept of “breed”.
This definition refers to a large group of animals, in this case dogs, that have the same type of constitution and exterior that is consistently transmitted from generation to generation and has common roots of origin. To ensure that dogs have the appearance and qualities that people need, breeds are constantly being improved. This is done by selecting the most promising puppies and breeding dogs with the most pronounced traits characteristic of this type of animal. In Russia, extensive work has long been carried out to preserve existing ones, as well as to create new breeds of service dogs that can bring invaluable help to humans. For example, the following truly Russian national breeds have become: Moscow Watchdog, Black Terrier, etc.
Dogs that belong to the same breed must have many common characteristics, properties and qualities. For this purpose, the so-called dog breed standards were designated. The standard is one of the most important documents determining whether a dog belongs to a specific breed.
All deviations from existing breed standards are divided into shortcomings and vices. The shortcomings do not interfere with the service use and breeding of dogs, since deviations from the standard are insignificant and do not have a negative impact on the genotype of the animal. Significant deviations from the standards are called “disqualifying faults” or “defects”, and serve as grounds for disqualifying the animal from shows and clubs, as well as prohibiting it from breeding or service use.
At the moment, the largest standardizing association is the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) (French Fédération Cynologique Internationale) - an international association of cynological federations, created for the purpose of developing and protecting cynology and purebred dog breeding. It is located in the city of Thuin, Belgium. The federation includes national cynological federations of 83 countries, including the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF).
Breed
is a group of animals of the same species, obtained through artificial selection and possessing a number of external, internal and behavioral characteristics that are persistently passed on from generation to generation.
Purebred dogs were bred by man to solve a variety of tasks: search and protection, military needs, herding and protecting livestock, for hunting, etc. Many of them were bred simply for beauty. Pedigree dogs differ from outbred dogs, first of all, in the “predictability of the result” - when getting a puppy, a person can quite fully imagine what it will grow out of. Both in appearance - “exterior”, and in character.
Today, most purebred dogs are bred as companions: the “work” of many breeds comes down to participation in exhibitions, sports competitions and competitions.
The first attempts to classify dogs were carried out in ancient times. The ancient Romans, in addition to the dogs described by Aristotle, named many new breeds: Phoenician, Soletine, Egyptian greyhounds, and so on. In the Middle Ages, the number of breeds continuously increased, especially during the Renaissance. The aristocracy was mainly involved in dog breeding, so most of the breeds known at that time were hunting ones. The same were the early classifications of dogs: hunting and all others.
Today there are about 400 dog breeds in the world. Conventionally, they can be divided into three large subgroups: service (including sports), hunting and decorative. This division is very arbitrary and modern cynology offers options for more detailed classifications of dog breeds. The most famous of them are the classifications of the English Keppel Club, the American Kenisle Club (AKC) and the classification of the International Canine Federation (FCI). The English and American systems operate only within the framework of their respective organizations. A more complete and scientifically based classification of dog breeds has been developed by the FCI. This classification is accepted in all countries that are part of the Federation, including Russia, a member of the FCI. Let's try to briefly characterize each group of breeds.
American Kennel Club
Ava: food for small breed dogs, holistic, premium
The American Kennel Club is a non-profit organization that maintains a registry of purebred dog breeds. It holds more than 20 thousand events annually. More than 1 million animals are registered there. The American Kennel Club identifies 7 categories of purebred dogs:
- Hunting and gun.
- Hunting.
- Service.
- Terriers.
- Indoor decorative.
- Non-hunting.
- Shepherds.
Important! There is a special register in which breeders working on the creation of new dog breeds can record the pedigrees and litters of animals for their subsequent official registration.
GROUP I – Herding and Cattle Dogs
The breeds in this group, as the name suggests, are bred from herding dogs. These “shepherds” were used both to guard domestic animals and farms, and to manage herds and herds of livestock. Shepherd dogs of the first group have been trained for centuries to work in close contact with humans. Therefore, they make excellent service and sports dogs, since the tendency to obedience, endurance and performance are fixed by selection. At the same time, these dogs are often distrustful of strangers, active and require training. They make wonderful companions, but are more suitable for an active person. Despite the watchdog qualities inherent in many representatives of this group, they are not prone to dominance. A medium-length coat is typical for the group (wire-haired and long-haired breeds are rare in this group); these dogs are resilient, unpretentious and easily adapt to any climate. They can live both in a city apartment and outdoors all year round. Size - medium to large. The most famous representatives of the group are German and Scottish (collie) shepherds.

English Kennel Club
Purina food for dogs of small and large breeds
The English Kennel Club is a British organization that registers all purebred dogs and breeds. This club has identified the following groups of dog breeds:
- Hunting.
- Arms.
- Terriers.
- Custom.
- Service.
- Indoor decorative dogs.
- Shepherds.
Interesting! The English Club recognizes 218 dog breeds, 60 of which are British. From 04/06/2016 in Britain, the owner is obliged to ensure that the animal is compulsorily microchipped and enter it into the register of one of the commercial databases.

II GROUP - pinschers, schnauzers, molossians, mountain dogs and Swiss cattle dogs
Second group
- the most numerous and diverse in composition. It is impossible to characterize it entirely, so I will give characteristics of its subgroups.
So, “pinschers and schnauzers”
. The characteristics of these dogs are very close to what has been said about shepherd dogs. All breeds of the subgroup (not excluding “kids”) are service, working, or, in any case, suitable for training. The youngest and most famous breed among them is the Doberman Pinscher. Three breeds of schnauzers (large, medium and small) are also very popular: they are excellent working and sporting dogs. They often have a strong and tough character and require skilled training, long walks and exercises. Schnauzers are wire-haired dogs and require regular grooming, haircuts and trimming. Pinschers have short hair, so they can live outdoors all year round only in temperate climates. Sizes - from small to large.
The next subgroup is Molossians
. The subgroup includes herding dogs that guarded herds (in Russia also called “ovcharkas”), mastiff dogs (descendants of fighting and baiting dogs) and herd dogs. Herd guards are the oldest group of breeds among Molossians. These are primitive working breeds, whose tasks included protecting livestock and property from predators and intruders, which left an imprint on their character. Size is generally large to very large. Among some breeds there are real giants, weighing more than 80 kg. They have coarse hair and a very efficient metabolism - these dogs can get by with very meager food, sometimes completely unsuitable for dogs of cultural breeds (for example, lamb fat or raw dough). Selection conditions made these animals very resilient and unpretentious. However, the downside of such selection is a low propensity for obedience and discipline, low interest in training, when the dog understands perfectly well what is wanted from it, but does not consider it necessary to do it. Herd guards make excellent, perhaps the best guard dogs of all. Ideally, such a dog should live outside the city, have a territory and “property” that it will selflessly guard, and behave with its owner more like a partner than a servant. If not properly trained, they can dominate their owner. Many breeds of this group are distinguished by aggressiveness towards their relatives. The most famous dogs of this type in Russia are the Caucasian and Central Asian Shepherd Dogs. Great Danes were bred in ancient times to guard herds, but were used as fighting dogs, for baiting large and dangerous animals and, later, for organized fights with brothers and other animals. This group of breeds has a trail of bloody legends, but many of their modern representatives have retained only an external resemblance to warriors and gladiators. A typical example is the English bulldog.
Great Danes
- mostly smooth-haired dogs, therefore, regarding their keeping on the street, what was said about pinschers is true. These dogs are well adapted to living next to a person, in a home, are prone to obedience and are interested in communicating with their owner. Many members of the group are quite stubborn, but do not tend to dominate. They are often distrustful of strangers and aggressive towards dogs. All Great Danes are easy to train. Size ranges from medium to giant, and among the Great Danes there are breeds that are considered the largest dogs existing on Earth. Dogs in this group eat a lot and often do not enjoy good health and longevity. The most famous breeds in Russia are: Great Dane, Rottweiler, St. Bernard, Boxer, Newfoundland.
The third section includes four breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs
, descended from Roman herd dogs. These are attractive dogs with a symmetrical tri-color coat. By nature they are balanced, sensitive, with a penchant for discipline. Today they are spectacular and loyal companions. They are unpretentious and well suited both for the city and for a country house, easy to train, and suitable for sports. Three breeds have short hair, one - the Bernese Seppeihupp - has long hair that requires regular grooming. Size - medium to large.

Basics of taxonomy of dog breeds
When choosing an animal, future owners are guided by a certain set of characteristics that the dog must meet. These signs are most often size, specialization, and coat type. There are other details that you pay attention to before buying a pet, but they are less significant and more individual.
Konrad Laurenz theory
Groups of dogs by specialization:
- decorative - bred for people to admire and be proud of. Designer dogs have recently become popular as a separate type of decorative;
- sentinels are designed to protect the territory, to bark to notify the owner of an approaching stranger;
- servants perform some kind of service together with a person. They work in the police, in rescue services, guard borders, help blind and visually impaired people;
- hunting breeds have been valued since ancient times, helping people in hunting;
- shepherds help herd and guard livestock;
- northern sleds;
- companions exist next to a person, become true friends for him, perform the functions of nannies who can look after children or the elderly;
- fighting dogs are not used for their intended purpose; most of them are retrained as companions or used for police service.
Classification of dog breeds into groups according to coat type:
- naked;
- smooth-haired;
- short-haired;
- wire-haired;
- long-haired;
- fluffy.
Important! Even hairless dogs have a small amount of fur and need to be groomed. Not everyone knows that not only hairless dogs are hypoallergenic, but also other breeds.
Mexican hairless
III GROUP - terriers
Almost all terriers were bred in England, and the few “non-English” terriers were obtained, again, on the basis of English ancestors. Originally bred for burrow hunting, they have a fiery temperament and frantic energy. For Burrow Terriers, annual tests are organized in artificial pores, where the dog can “blow off steam.” All terriers are avid fighters, restless, they are very loyal, somewhat willful and devoid of a sense of fear. These are very pleasant companions, although restless: strong, unpretentious, long-lived. Smooth-haired terrier breeds are few in number; most terriers are wire-haired and long-haired dogs that require regular haircuts and trimming. Size - from dwarf to medium.
The subgroup “terriers of the bull type” is unique. Famous representatives are the Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These are dogs with a share of the blood of ancient fighting bulldogs, unusually strong physically and aggressive towards other animals, with a very strong character. With proper training, they make outstanding working and sporting dogs, but they are completely unsuitable for novice dog breeders, because they require a steady hand and considerable knowledge.

IV GROUP - dachshunds
The fourth group is dachshunds.
In this group there are three height types (from dwarf to small) and three coat types (smooth, hard and long), for a total of nine varieties of dachshunds. All dachshunds are burrowing dogs, hunters, even the smallest dachshunds, today more often used as decorative dogs, can hunt rabbits and retain the inherent spirit and working qualities of the breed. Dachshunds are very smart, but at the same time wayward dogs, not alien to healthy egocentrism, charming and sociable, with a great sense of self-esteem. Strong, unpretentious dogs tend to live long lives. The coat of longhaired and wirehaired varieties requires grooming.
- Standard dachshund g/d/f.sh
- Dachshund dwarf g/d/f.sh
- Dachshund rabbit g/d/f.sh
Schnauzer
This is a group of dogs with a universal purpose. Unites three breeds: miniature schnauzer, miniature schnauzer, and giant schnauzer. Distinctive features:
- square build;
- large, prominent head with a beard and bushy eyebrows;
- hard wool.
Schnauzers are endowed with high intelligence and learn quickly. They are excellent watchdogs and companions. But those who are not ready to lead an active lifestyle should not get them, since these dogs need long, active walks in the fresh air.

GROUP V - Spitz and primitive dogs
Fifth group - Spitz and Laika dogs
. A subgroup of European Spitz stands out from this group. It contains both dwarf and medium-sized breeds of ancient European “peasant dogs”, very affectionate, prone to discipline, absolutely “domestic” and suitable for a variety of training. Sled and hunting huskies differ quite strongly from Spitz dogs, first of all, in that they consider a person as a partner and ally, but not a master. Laika can sacrifice her life for a person, but if she is walking and does not want to go home, you cannot force her. Therefore, keeping huskies in the city is fraught with difficulties. The ideal place for a Laika to live should be considered a country house, if possible with a large plot. If you plan to hunt, you won't find a more versatile and reliable working dog. All huskies and spitzes are very active dogs that require long walks. Many breeds in this group are prone to overeating and obesity, and dogs living in the city especially suffer from this. Lycoiformes are very hardy, unpretentious, resilient, long-living dogs. The coat of most breeds does not require maintenance.

Size division
Groups of dogs are also divided by breed, taking into account their weight and height at the withers. Small dogs fit well into a city apartment, while larger dogs need a full-fledged country house with a designated area.
Dwarf
These babies weigh no more than 4 kg, and their height at the withers does not exceed 30 cm. Dwarf breeds include Japanese Chins, Chihuahuas, Prague Raters, Toy Poodles and Maltese. They live a long time, quickly learn to go to the tray and take up very little space.
Small
The sizes of small dogs are 30-40 cm at the withers and 4-10 kg in weight. They are very friendly, inquisitive and quickly become attached to humans. These include Belgian Griffons, Welsh Terriers, Dachshunds, Pekingese, French Bulldogs and Bologneses.
Average
This group includes the Estonian hound, English cocker spaniel, Karelian-Finnish husky, German pinscher and beagle. The weight of all these animals is 11-25 kg, and the height at the withers is 41-55 cm. Thanks to their developed intelligence and balanced character, they are easy to train and get along well with children.
Large
Large dogs weigh 26-50 kg, and their height ranges from 55 to 75 cm. For this reason, it is better to keep the South Russian Shepherd, Fila Brasileiro, Saluki, Russian Hound, Tosa Inu and other representatives from this group in a private home. Such pets are well suited for home protection and hunting.
Gigantic
The size of the Neapolitan Mastiff, St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Alabai and Caucasian Shepherd is truly frightening. Giant breeds include all animals that exceed the parameters of large ones. These pets will be large even as puppies, so they will need a large area for walking and regular exercise in the fresh air.

VI GROUP - hounds
The sixth group includes hounds.
These dogs (with the exception of three or four breeds that have practically become decorative) are quite rare among amateur dog breeders and are almost never found in the city. Hounds are very specific dogs that still remain true to their purpose - hunting. They can have a very independent disposition. It is difficult to achieve perfect obedience from such a dog. Therefore, hounds are very inconvenient companion dogs. The most famous hound breeds in Russia are Russian Piebald, Anglo-Russian, Beagle, Basset Hound and Bloodhound. The Rhodesian Ridgeback belongs to the same group, although it is not a typical hound. Size - medium to large. The coat of most breeds does not require maintenance.
