What should a doghouse be like for a Caucasian Shepherd: dimensions and how to build it yourself

Thanks to its thick coat, the Caucasian Shepherd feels comfortable when kept in the yard.

This dog can be on the street all year round and is often purchased as a guard for a country house - the Caucasian Shepherd has the character of a real security guard and watchman.

But the frost resistance of this breed does not mean at all that the Caucasian Shepherd can do without shelter from bad weather or, conversely, the scorching sun.

Keeping such a large pet in the house is very difficult.

That is why the owner should take time to build a dog house. This is also important because even the life expectancy of the pet may depend on the choice of place of keeping.

What is better - a booth or an aviary?

The booth allows the Caucasian Shepherd to shelter from bad weather, but does not restrict the dog’s free movement around the yard, and if the fence is not strong enough, it will not be able to prevent its escape.

An enclosure, even an indoor one, is not able to completely protect a pet from cold or heat..

The best choice would be not an aviary or a booth separately, but an aviary with a booth and a walk.

Manufacturing stages

First, a place is prepared for the construction of an enclosure. It needs to be cleared and sloped towards the facade. If the floor is not covered with boards later, experts recommend covering it with fine-grained pebbles (this will prevent the dog from injuring its paws). But first a metal mesh must be laid to a depth of one meter. She will not allow the dog to dig.

The frame of the future structure is assembled from metal pipes. They are connected to each other by welding. First you need to make a drawing of an enclosure for a German shepherd, taking into account all the requirements listed above. A grille is made from pipes for the façade. The dimensions between the slats should not exceed 10 cm.

All metal elements are carefully primed and then covered with paint materials. Powder-coated pipes cannot be used for the designated purposes; galvanized products cannot be used.

To attach the boards, you must first make a hole, and only then attach them to the frame using stainless steel screws. If you do not make preliminary holes and immediately begin installing the boards using fasteners, the wood may burst or crack. Moisture that gets inside such a defect will trigger the onset of the rotting process.

When building walls, it is important to ensure that the first board at the base does not come into contact with the floor. To construct the roof, a wooden sheathing is made, and the roofing material is already attached to it.

Pros and cons of the booth

pros:

  • Protects the dog from adverse weather conditions.
  • Creates a feeling of confidence in the pet.
  • If there is a chain, it allows you to temporarily isolate the shepherd if necessary.
  • It can serve as a kind of decoration for a courtyard.

Minuses:

  • Inability to isolate the dog for a long time.
  • Not the most convenient solution for the owner of a breeding bitch, since the puppies will crawl around the yard.
  • Needs periodic cleaning and repair.

How to choose the right place

It should be located somewhat away from residential buildings, but so that the dog, while there, can monitor what is happening in the yard. It is necessary that the Caucasian Shepherd dog from the booth can see the gate or entrance to the yard, as well as the door of the house.

IMPORTANT!

The place for the kennel should not be located in a low area, since during rain water will flow there from the slopes.

The best place for a kennel is on a hill, away from an outdoor toilet, pigsty, barn, poultry house or other outbuildings that emit too strong odors that irritate the dog and disturb him.

In addition, the booth should be located so that trees, a house or a barn cover it from the wind.

Construction of an enclosure for a Caucasian Shepherd

The harvest has been harvested, the results of the season have been summed up. My hands and thoughts were freed up for new ideas, in my case, buildings. Therefore, on the eve of autumn, the idea came to mind to build an enclosure for the old Caucasian Shepherd Dog. The dog’s health began to fail, and whatever one may say, a dog in an enclosure of this size poses less danger than on a chain.

Much was not taken into account during construction, much changed during the work. But while the memories are still fresh in my memory, I hasten to share the process.

Kennel requirements

The kennel should be warm, cozy and protect the dog from adverse weather conditions.

It is undesirable to install either a kennel that is too small or too large . In the first, the pet will be too cramped, he will not be able to lie there, stretching out to his full length.

A kennel that is too spacious will not be a reliable shelter from the cold, since it is heated only by the heat transfer of the animal itself, and in this case, the heat will be irrationally distributed over a larger area.

The booth must be made of moisture-resistant and fire-resistant materials . If it is made, for example, from wood, then the material must be impregnated with special impregnations.

The bottom of the booth needs to be raised at least 15 cm: this will help better protect the dog from the cold.

The materials from which the dog kennel is built must be hypoallergenic and safe for animals.

Choosing a location for an aviary in the yard

You want to make an enclosure so that your pet feels good, so you need to take into account its character and habits. While in the enclosure, the dog will continue to guard its territory, so it is best to fence off the area on a hill, if there is one. It is very good if the entrance to the house, the entrance to the site is visible, or at least it will be possible to track one of these important points. When choosing a place, keep in mind that your pet needs to see you at least from time to time. You or family members. Otherwise, whining and howling are guaranteed, especially if the dog is not used to restrictions.

When choosing materials, keep in mind that everything that can be chewed will be chewed

When choosing a location, pay attention to the following points:

Taking all these wishes into account is far from easy, but it depends on how well the pet will feel.

Measuring your pet to determine size

The owner of an adult Caucasian Shepherd can build a kennel for his pet according to individual sizes. Such a booth will be more comfortable for a dog than a standard one, designed for representatives of a given breed of average height and weight.

What measurements will need to be taken before starting to draw up the drawing?:

  • Booth length . Equal to the length of the dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail +15 cm so that the animal feels comfortable and can stretch out to its full length.
  • Width and height of the booth . Equal to the total height of the dog (from the top of the head to the ground) +15 cm.
  • Manhole height . Subtract 10 cm from the height at the withers.
  • Manhole width . The distance between the shoulder-scapular joints of the Caucasian Shepherd is measured, after which 10 cm must be added to the obtained value.

The hole should not be made too high or wide, as this helps to quickly cool the air inside the kennel.

Process

First, the frame for the walls of the enclosure was welded, after which the reinforcement and mesh were welded to it. The rear, side right wall and roof are covered with corrugated sheeting. A mesh with a diameter of 5 mm with a cell size of 100 * 100 mm, the same as the distance between the bars of 10 mm reinforcement, is mounted under it.

The frame is made of steel angle 40*40*4 mm, strips 40*4 mm and corrugated pipe 40*40*4 mm. There is also a net under the floorboards. They did not make a door for the feeder in order to save money, but they fenced it with a net.

Aviary door on garage hinges with a diameter of 25 mm with a latch. Naturally, there are also loops for the lock.

Roof drop 60 mm, slope to the right.

Perhaps our idea will be useful to those who also need a pen for a guard dog, for example, when receiving guests.

Medium sizes

Often a kennel is built for a puppy or young dog that is still growing and gaining weight and muscle mass. In this case, it is better to build the booth not according to individual sizes, but according to universal standards.

The average size of a booth for a Caucasian Shepherd is:

  • Length: 135-140 cm.
  • Height: 95-105 cm.
  • Width: 95-100 cm
  • Manhole size: 45-65
  • Tambour length (added to the total length of the kennel): 25-35 cm.

Aviary for dogs: photos of popular designs, their classification

Any dog that lives outdoors for a long time needs a special place where it can feel comfortable. This area should have a fence and the necessary amenities so that, if necessary, the animal has the opportunity to sleep peacefully, play and hide from bad weather. To organize a space suitable for these purposes, it is enough to build an enclosure for a dog that will meet all its needs.

You can build a beautiful enclosure for a dog with your own hands from scrap materials or purchase a turnkey design

In what cases is an outdoor enclosure for a dog necessary?

Medium and large-sized dogs are kept outdoors. Animals of small breeds are less hardy and need to be kept at home.

An outdoor dog enclosure is necessary in the following cases:

  1. The size of the animal does not allow keeping it in the house - experts recommend building enclosures for Caucasian Shepherds, Alabais, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Mastiffs and other large breeds.
  2. The need for temporary isolation of the animal - during construction work in the courtyard of the house or in the event of guests arriving, there is a need to protect the animal.
  3. Keeping a guard dog - if the animal performs the function of a guard, the enclosure will serve as a home for the dog living in the yard. This structure will protect the pet from rain, snow and wind.

To keep a dog outdoors, it is necessary to build an open or closed enclosure with sufficient area for the animal’s free movement

Many stores allow pet owners to buy an inexpensive outdoor enclosure for a dog of any size or modification ready-made or order its production. If you wish and have minimal construction skills, you can independently build a beautiful and reliable home for your animal.

What types of dog enclosures are there: photos and classification by type of construction

Before starting the manufacturing process, you need to determine what the structure should be that will stand in the courtyard of the house. In the photos found online, the enclosures have different configurations and designs. The appearance of the structure depends on its purpose, the size and breed of the dog, the materials chosen, as well as the personal preferences of the animal owner.

Helpful advice! Regardless of the chosen design, it is worth taking care of wall insulation. Ecowool or polystyrene foam can be used as thermal insulation lining.

An enclosure is necessary for puppies for educational purposes and also to protect them

The designs of dog enclosures are:

  1. Temporary.
  2. Closed.
  3. Capital.

The structures of temporary enclosures are open. The area allocated for keeping the dog is fenced off with a mesh or fence. To arrange the internal space, a booth is installed and a flooring is formed. Such enclosures do not have a roof, since the animal is in them temporarily.

Closed structures belong to the category of intermediate buildings. For convenience, a flooring is formed inside and a booth is placed. This type of enclosure is considered partially insulated, since the walking area is fenced with solid walls on three sides. The fourth surface has the form of a lattice to give the animal the opportunity to observe what is happening in the yard.

The stationary structure of the dog enclosure must have a solid foundation with an insulated floor

Capital-type enclosures have one translucent wall in the form of a lattice. The remaining surfaces are made solid and well insulated. Such structures have a deck and a roof. A booth is placed inside or a special sleeping place is equipped. For this purpose, part of the enclosure is fenced off.

Features of enclosures for puppies and small breed dogs

In addition to outdoor enclosures, there are also home structures that are used in residential premises for keeping puppies. Such products are small in size and very light in weight. Most of these enclosures have a prefabricated structure.

Inside you must place:

  • soft bedding;
  • a bowl of water and food;
  • a diaper or tray so that the dog can relieve itself;
  • toys.

An example of a modular collapsible enclosure for small breed dogs

At home, enclosures are used for Yorkies and dogs of other decorative breeds with miniature sizes. Some owners do not want to limit the freedom of their pet with the help of such a barrier, but there are many situations when such a design simply cannot be done without.

Important! An enclosure is not a place of punishment for an animal, regardless of whether an outdoor or indoor structure is used. If the dog is inside, it should not be punished. The animal should feel safe and have a positive outlook on their time there.

An aviary for an apartment can be built from old furniture or a lightweight collapsible structure can be purchased.

If the home enclosure does not fit too well into the area of the apartment, you can give preference to a clipper or cage. In this case, the area where the dog is temporarily kept will be more compact.

Ready-made enclosures for dogs: prices for turnkey structures

Many companies offer owners of large and medium-sized animals to buy a ready-made outdoor dog enclosure. At the same time, buyers are offered the opportunity to choose a design from the catalog or create it to order based on the drawings or photos they like. Prices depend on the size of the structure, its configuration and the materials chosen for construction.

Average prices of ready-made turnkey enclosures:

Note! The price of finished structures does not include the price of the booth. When purchasing an enclosure, it will cost approximately 7,000 rubles. The price of a booth without insulation is 4,000 rubles.

Portable prefabricated enclosures are very convenient for use in a private home, since they can be easily dismantled or moved to another location

Types of booths and how to choose the right one

Booths for Caucasian Shepherds can be of the following types:

  • With a gable roof.
  • With a pitched roof.
  • With vestibule.
  • With an aviary.

Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages: for example, water drains more easily from a gable roof during rain and during the snow melting season. A lean-to kennel with a slight slope of the roof is good because the dog can use it as an observation post or another bed.

Booths with a vestibule provide additional warmth, since wind and cold air do not pass into the living compartment . The enclosure allows the Caucasian Shepherd the opportunity to move freely around the territory, at the same time it does not allow the animal to escape or attack someone who seems suspicious to him.

NOTE!

When choosing the type of booth, you need to proceed from the needs of the pet and the conditions in which it is kept.

In areas with cold and windy winters, you cannot do without a booth with a vestibule. In regions with high humidity and frequent rain, a booth with a gable roof is good.

The aviary is suitable for professional breeders who have several dogs in their home, as well as in cases where the dog is very angry and can attack any person who enters the yard.

As for a kennel with a pitched roof, it is considered a universal option, especially since it can be supplemented with a vestibule or an enclosure, and the slope can be made a little steeper so that water drains from it better.

Adaptations for a dog's life

In addition to a place to sleep, the booth should also be an observation point for the watchman. Therefore, a canopy is often attached to it, under which the dog spends considerable time. should also be made under such a canopy to protect the occupant from dampness and dirt. You can also organize a feeding place there by placing bowls protected from rain and snow. You can install a chain hook into the wall or floor. Even if it is not intended to keep the dog on a chain, in some cases it may be necessary to secure it there.

What material is best to make it from?

The best material for building a booth is considered to be deciduous or coniferous wood, such as oak, alder, pine or spruce.

It is necessary to use good quality material: without knots, cracks, signs of decay or fungus.

But it is not recommended to use pressed materials for these purposes, such as particle boards or fibreboards, as they contain synthetic resins and emit harmful fumes.

When choosing material for a booth, you should not save too much and take defective wood . Low-quality materials are short-lived and, as a result, you will have to build a new booth within a few years.

A kennel, built from good quality materials, can last two decades.

Materials for construction

Materials for building a kennel:

  • Edged board or lining (from 2 to 3 cm in thickness)
  • Wood beam (square in cross-section)
  • Carpenter's glue
  • Nails, self-tapping screws or screed screws
  • Furniture fittings or door hinges
  • Silicone sealant
  • Ruberoid or other soft roofing material
  • Insulation, for example, polystyrene foam of the required thickness. For a booth with double flooring, you will also need mineral wool.
  • Glassine
  • Tarpaulin or soft thin plastic to cover the hole
  • Antiseptic, moisture-proof and fire-resistant impregnation for wood.

In addition, you will need tools:

  • Marker or pencil
  • Roulette
  • Construction level
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Electric jigsaw or saw

It is not recommended to use hard roofing materials as roof coverings, as they make a lot of noise during rain or hail, disturbing the dog.

How to build it yourself

Preparatory work:

  • Find a suitable drawing of a kennel on the Internet, and then make changes to it in accordance with the design or individual dimensions of the animal.
  • Transfer the drawing in full size onto thick paper or thin cardboard.
  • Cut out the parts: you will need them as templates.
  • Clear the space in the yard where the booth will be located.

Before starting work, it is necessary to properly plan and sand the surface of the wood.

Construction and insulation process:

  • Using metal corners or self-tapping screws, assemble the base frame. Its height should be 15 cm, and its length and width should either be equal to or exceed the dimensions of the future booth.
  • Flooring is made from edged boards, clapboard or plywood, which can be either single or double, with insulation. To do this, mineral wool is laid between the layers of flooring.
  • Four beams are cut to the height of the booth and placed in the corners. You can also place a few more beams between them - this will increase the strength of the kennel.
  • An inner wall is cut out of clapboard or plywood and installed so as to separate the vestibule from the living part.
  • Using the templates attached to the material and outlined with a marker or pencil, the walls of the booth are cut out (2 pieces each, since the booth will have double walls).
  • Using the same templates, parts are cut out from foam plastic (1 piece each) and glassine (2 pieces each).
  • Glassine parts are applied to wooden parts and secured to them using a construction stapler. Then foam parts are placed on them and covered with a second layer of glassine on top. After this, parts made of clapboard or plywood are attached to the glassine on top.
  • The finished walls of the booth are placed in place and fastened in any convenient way.
  • Frame parts for the roof are cut out and installed in accordance with the drawing.
  • 3 bars are attached to one side of the roof, so that the slope is approximately 15 degrees.
  • The walls of the booth are sheathed with an outer layer of lining.
  • The roof is made from roofing felt or any other suitable roofing material.
  • Furniture fittings or door hinges are attached to the roof from the inside so that it can be removed during cleaning.
  • The walls are treated with antiseptic impregnation, as well as impregnations that make the wood moisture- and fire-resistant.
  • The outside of the kennel is varnished or painted, but the boards inside should be left unpainted, since fumes from paint or varnish are harmful to animals.
  • From the inside, in front of the entrance, a strip is nailed or glued onto which a tarpaulin curtain is attached.

To make the frame of the booth stronger, an additional jumper can be made of timber along the length.

The simplest solution and step-by-step recommendations

A novice home craftsman first needs to visualize the structure he wants to create. For a novice builder, unnecessary imagination usually ends when he starts drawing up a drawing, drawing or sketch.

The product, especially if it is the first, should be planned to be simple, understandable in design, simple rectangular in shape, with a central entrance, single-pitched. First you need to understand that the shape of the booth is an ordinary closed box with a lid.

Drawing of a dog house with dimensions

First the floor is made

  • This is a shield with the internal dimensions of the length and width of the booth, but with an addition of 12 cm to the length and width. Four timbers are laid in the shape of a frame on a level table. They can be connected to each other using metal corners.
  • On one side, waterproofing is attached to the frame - roofing felt, roofing felt, glassine. There are another dozen or two brand names, but you can choose the cheapest option. You can use a stapler for fastening, you can nail thin slats so that the roofing material does not sag.
  • Immediately after filing the insulation, two or three beams are nailed along or across the frame. It is better to paint them or cover them with bitumen mastic - they will stand on the ground, and the coating will save them from rapid rotting.
  • The frame is turned over and insulation is placed inside it. You can cover the insulation, if it is glass wool or other dust-producing material, with any insulating film. Next, a continuous plank flooring is made from tongue-and-groove boards 30-40 mm thick.

Best articles: Vomiting in cats: types, treatment and prevention

The next step is to make the side shields

  • They are made in the same way as a floor board, but 20 mm thick boards are nailed to the frame, and insulation and insulation are not yet inserted.
  • The length of both side panels is equal to the length of the floor, and the width is equal to the internal height of the kennel.
  • The sides are installed on the floor flush with its edges and fastened together with screws or corners.
  • To perform fastening, it is better to lay the structure on its side.
  • The side walls are installed strictly vertically in level and temporarily fixed from above with slats or boards to each other.

Next, the back wall is made

  • The manufacturing procedure is the same as for the side ones, and the dimensions should be taken from the already prepared place for the end shield.
  • The assembled end wall is inserted into the overall product and attached to the side ones.

Facade part

  • The front face has only one additional complication: the manhole structure. The manhole frame is manufactured separately, taking into account the possibility of its insertion into the front wall and fastening to it.
  • Subsequently, the front of the booth is sheathed with boards, taking into account the manhole, and installed between the side panels, with the part covered with boards inward, like the previous parts.

Roof

  • The last thing to make is the cover - an exact analogue of the floor without insulation.
  • It is installed with the sheathed part down and fastened to the side and end walls with self-tapping screws and flat furniture corners.
  • On such a structure, the roof slope is determined from the roofing materials used. No slope at all is allowed.

The best option: lay insulation in the roof frame in the same way as the floor, and then cover the top with a sheet of waterproof plywood 12-16mm thick. The size of the covering can be significantly wider and longer than the roof, providing the necessary overhangs, canopies for shade, a rest area for the dog and excellent weather protection for the entire structure.

Side walls

They can be insulated according to the principle of a roof and ceiling, and then sheathed with plywood or other materials.

Aviary dimensions

The recommended enclosure sizes for dogs of this breed are 4x3 and 4x5 meters. But if desired and possible, you can make a more spacious enclosure.

To prevent the Caucasian Shepherd from climbing over the fence of the enclosure, it is recommended to make it completely covered . In this case, the height of the fence should be no less than 2 meters.

Choosing a nickname

When choosing a nickname for a Caucasian Shepherd, you can shorten the long nickname given to it in the kennel, or come up with a homemade one. The puppy is taught the name from the first meeting and from the first command. Therefore, try to come up with it in advance.

The main thing is that the nickname sounds good, is short, without signs of vulgar, rude humor. It is better to refuse human names in order to avoid awkward or conflict situations. Also, do not choose a nickname that is in tune with the team. For example, a boy puppy may confuse the name Sid with the command “sit.”

You can choose an interesting and beautiful nickname for both males and females. For example, you can name a puppy or a girl in an original way, borrowing names from books, TV series, films, space - from anywhere, as far as your imagination allows. For example, Goldie, Kisha, Medea, Nya, Teona, Tsya, Yamza.

A boy of this breed can have a name that emphasizes his impressive and menacing appearance. You can also find a suitable nickname in any area: car brands, names of your favorite teams or musical groups, in geographical names. For example, Amiran, Buyan, Vulcan, Highlander, Colorado, Oscar, Urs, Shaitan, Iago.

Do I need to put it on a chain?

The Caucasian Shepherd cannot be kept on a chain all the time, as this spoils the animal’s psyche and embitters it.

If necessary, in the absence of an enclosure, you can tie the dog to the booth for a short time, but it is advisable that someone from the family watches during this time so that the dog cannot break free from the leash or harm itself by getting entangled in the chain.

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog tolerates even severe frosts well . But when keeping this dog in a kennel or enclosure, it is necessary that the animal has the opportunity to take refuge there in case of bad weather or extreme heat.

It should be remembered that the kennel for the Caucasian Shepherd must be spacious enough for the dog to lie down there, stretching out to its full length.

But you shouldn’t make booths that are too large, especially those consisting of several rooms: in such structures the animal does not feel too uncomfortable.

Examples of shepherd dog kennels

As they say, theory is good, but practice is better. Therefore, we invite you to consider several interesting options for kennels for keeping shepherd dogs.

By lengthening one of the roof slopes and extending the sheathing of the booth, we will get a vestibule open on both sides. In inclement weather it will protect the dog from rain, and on a hot sunny day it will protect it from the scorching sun.

In the next photo we see an example of a booth with a gable roof, forming a vestibule open on three sides. This configuration is not only convenient for the dog, but also easy to implement.

Good visibility and protection from the vagaries of weather are obvious advantages of this design. The outside of the kennel is lined with tongue and groove boards. OSB board was used for the internal cladding of the walls, floor and roof. Roofing material – soft tiles.

The functionality of a dog house is an important, but not the only issue that should be given attention. The appearance of the booth is also important. One of the original options is an imitation of human habitation.

Having built such “mansions” for your four-legged friend with a canopy and a fence, you can proudly say that your dog lives no worse than his owner.

It is better to build a warm booth taking into account the dimensions of an adult dog. Shepherds grow quickly. Before you know it, your teenage puppy won't be able to fit into his old kennel.

The photo below shows a booth with a combined roof. Above the sleeping area it is made of a pitched roof, and there is a canopy over the entrance. This solution allows you to do without a vestibule, provided that the width of the canopy is at least 70 cm.

There are different opinions regarding the placement of the manhole. Some shepherd owners claim that it is better to do it on the narrow side of the booth. Others believe that it is more comfortable for the dog when the entrance is located on a long wall. We think that this issue is not fundamental. It is much more important to make the kennel such that the dog does not freeze in it, can turn freely, stand up to its full height and curl up for the night.

We have already said that the kennel should not be very large. Now let's look at the photo where the owner clearly overdid it with its size. If an area of 4 m2 is acceptable for a covered vestibule, then you should not make a huge shelter for overnight stays. The only exception is keeping a dog with puppies while they are growing up.

Few owners think about what height is best to place dog feeders. Practice has shown that placing them on the floor is not the best option. Therefore, today you can find booths equipped with stands for feeders.

To avoid direct contact with the ground, the floor of the booth and vestibule must be raised above the ground. A gap of 5-7 centimeters will be enough.

There should be no flat roof on the kennel. Water will always find a hole and wet your watchman.

The flat folding roof can only be used in an aviary. It is built when the house is often visited by people unfamiliar to the dog.

To prevent the dog from spinning underfoot and interfering with cleaning, a piece of plywood is placed above the entrance to the kennel. It slides up and down along two guides.
