For a long time, the history of the golden retriever was a mystery. There are several entertaining theories and legends that give these dogs an aura of romance. The main one connects the appearance of the breed with a certain Lord Tweedmouth, who for a huge sum of money purchased eight Russian shepherd dogs from circus performers who arrived from Russia, with which the origin of the Golden Retriever allegedly began. In 1952, stud books dating from 1835-1890, handed down by Lord Tweedmouth's great-nephew, dispelled all myths about these dogs. Mrs. Stoneks, who at that time headed the English Golden Retriever , found information in documents that confirmed the origin of the breed from two dogs: a female tweed water spaniel and a yellow retriever.
In the vastness of the USSR, dogs of this breed appeared in 1989, when Alexey Surov, the founder of the Russian Retriever Club, brought a female Golden Retriever from the USA. Two years later she gave birth to her first litter, which gave impetus to the development of the breed.
The Golden Retriever is a large dog with a strong build and thick, water-repellent coat. The height at the withers, according to the standard, is 56-61 cm in males and 51-56 in females. The average weight of male representatives ranges from 29 to 35 kg, and that of female representatives from 27 to 32 kg. Due to the wide historical popularity of dogs of this breed, some regional differences have appeared. The American type of Golden Retriever is taller and less stocky than its British counterparts. There is also a Canadian type of breed, characterized by a less dense coat and darker color. They are taller and slimmer than British retrievers.
