French hounds, breed standards, breed history

History of the breed

Developed in France in the 1970s by crossing French Poitevin hounds and English hounds, as well as other French hounds such as porcelain hounds and Gascony blues, with rabbit, quail and pheasant hounds. Works great both solo and with a bow. This is the youngest breed among the French hounds, and experts believe that the breed is still in its formative stages. In 1978, the breed was officially recognized and received its final name.

Herding dog breeds from France

The work of a shepherd is not easy if there is no faithful dog nearby who is always ready to help. Therefore, French breeders bred many herding breeds:

Appearance

Graceful and compact, this breed is the golden mean between English and French hounds. He has a small, slender, beautifully shaped head. The ears are hanging, medium in size, deep-set, covered with small folds. The body is muscular and strong, athletic. This is a short, smooth coat that does not require much grooming. Three color options are available: white with red, white with black and tri-color.

The height at the withers varies from 48 to 56 cm, but the tolerance for well-built individuals can be up to 2 cm on each side [1].

Small French dog breeds

What French breeders have succeeded in is breeding graceful decorative dogs that can become a wonderful friend for the whole family. In addition, due to their small size, they are often suitable for children, and in a cramped city apartment they are much easier to keep than Great Danes or Azawakhs. If you want to get a small French dog, here is the list for you!

Bichon Frize

Without a doubt, this is one of the cutest French dogs that will find its way to the heart of any person. In addition, they practically do not shed and do not have the unpleasant odor characteristic of dogs, which makes the Bichon Frize a good choice for a small apartment. They easily find a common language with owners of all ages - from children to the elderly.

On the other hand, the Bichon Frize does not tolerate loneliness well - they need to always have a person nearby whom they love and trust. In general, these decorative pets are great mischief-makers and pranksters, capable of changing the owner’s life forever.

They rarely grow more than 30 cm, and more often - no more than 25-27 cm at the withers. Weight of 2.5-3 kg makes pets easy to carry even for small children.

Despite its miniature size, a French lapdog costs from 40-50 thousand rubles for a pet-class puppy, and 70-100 thousand for a descendant of champions.

Papillon or continental toy spaniel

The main feature of the decorative dog bred by French breeders is its ears covered with soft, long hair. Cheerful dogs, true extroverts, infect everyone around them with positivity and share a great mood. They easily coexist with all animals: dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits. An additional plus is an outstanding mind. According to Stanley Coren's scale, the Papillon ranks eighth among all dog breeds.

When keeping, the main thing is to walk often and for a long time - a miniature dog needs constant physical activity. Timely socialization is also important. Without it, the Papillon can grow aggressive not only towards animals, but also towards people.

The low weight makes it easy for Papillons to be carried even by small children - around 3-5 kg. Well, the dimensions are appropriate - only 20-28 cm at the withers.

Owning a Papillon cannot be called a cheap pleasure. On average, sellers ask from 30 to 50 thousand rubles for a puppy. Elite dogs from champion parents will cost 70 thousand rubles and more. Even the pet category and outright breeding cost from 10 to 15 thousand.

Small lion dog

Another decorative French breed. It is believed that it was bred back in the second century AD! Despite their small size, truly lion hearts beat in their chests. Dogs are distinguished by their good-natured character, mobility and courage. Their affectionate disposition and intelligence make them a good purchase for both large families and single people who want to have a companion.

The height of males is greater than that of females - 33-36 cm versus 30-33. The same can be said about the weight – 5-8 kg and 4-6, respectively. On Avito they ask for a dog from 100 thousand rubles.

French Bulldog

An excellent example of the work of French breeders is the bulldog. Compact but dense, it does not have the simplest character. But at the same time, a decorative dog can act as a fearless guard or watchman. Friendliness is not alien to him, but he treats all strangers with healthy suspicion.

It’s worth warning right away that the bulldog is not suitable for families with small children. He is not the best nanny and in response to excessive intrusiveness, the dog is capable of showing his teeth and scaring the child. An additional advantage is the absence of the habit of barking in vain. Minus – hatred of loneliness. Left alone for a long time, a French bulldog will probably destroy your apartment.

His physique is dense. Although the height at the withers is only 30-35 cm, the dog weighs from 8 to 14 kg - not so little for a small stature.

The cost of a puppy varies greatly depending on club membership, the presence of medals and awards from the parents. The price ranges from 20 to 70 thousand rubles.

Poodle

A decorative breed, the representatives of which are rightfully considered one of the smartest in the world - on the scale of canine intelligence, poodles take second place. Initially they were hunting dogs, but over time their appearance changed under the influence of the work of breeders, and the poodle became a favorite among wealthy owners - nobles, merchants and others.

It learns easily and quickly, thanks not only to its sharp mind, but also to its habit of pleasing its owner at every opportunity. He picks up commands on the fly, so training is a real pleasure for both humans and dogs.

According to Fédération Cynologique Internationale standards, there are four varieties of poodles, differing in size:

  • large (aka royal) – 45-60 cm at the withers,
  • small – 35-45 cm,
  • dwarf (aka miniature) – 28-35 cm,
  • toy poodle – up to 28 cm.

The type of coat also varies – there are dogs with corded and curly coats.

The price range is simply huge. Many factors play a role: the type of poodle, its pedigree, the presence of defects, membership in a club, coat type. Because of this, the cost can range from 5-10 thousand rubles to 50-70 thousand.

Temperament

Among his larger canine companions, he has adapted best to city life. A small Anglo-French dog will easily become a good companion and loyal friend. However, work in the field is necessary, and even as a family animal, it retains all its properties and hunting habits. Agile and energetic, he loves long walks and playing outdoors. He has a pleasant, somewhat reserved disposition, is attached to all family members and is quite easy to control. It requires a lot of exercise and is not suitable for people who cannot provide it. Keeping an Anglo-French dog in an apartment can be difficult; for these dogs, there is nothing better than living in the countryside, in nature.

Description of the large Anglo-French hound breed and how to raise a dog

And the Anglo-French hound is a generic name for many breeds, and they differ mainly in height and color. All hounds were obtained in France by crossing different dogs and English Foxhounds. According to experts, they tried to create the breed back in the 16th century, but only in the 19th century did it become widely recognized as an indispensable hunting dog. In the process of creating hounds there was a classification of breeds. Outwardly they are very similar to each other, but there are differences between them. Each breed has its own standard and is recognized by the FCI. During the breeding process, hunting individuals with the best characteristics were selected. Blood Foxhounds provided strong bones, strong constitution, hunting emotions and shared the unique sense of smell and ringing bark from the French hounds.

Description of the great Anglo-French hound.

Country of origin: France.

The date of appearance is originally already the 16th century, but it is believed that it is the 19th century.

Purpose: for driven hunting.

Activity is very fast.

Walking - of course, these dogs are not suitable for living in an apartment.

Large French dog breeds

Many people, especially those who live in their own spacious homes, choose large dogs such as the Beauceron, Dogue de Bordeaux or the French Mastiff. Well, these are excellent breeds, characterized by strength and endurance, which makes them worthy watchdogs. Therefore, it’s definitely worth telling at least briefly about the most popular and interesting ones.

Azawakh

The Azawakh's homeland is Africa, the Sahara Desert region. French colonialists brought the breed and improved it, setting certain standards.

Like any greyhound, the Azawakh is intended exclusively for hunting and has excellent parameters for this: with a height of 60-75 cm, they weigh only 15-25 kg, which allows them to develop high speed.

He gets along well with children and even strangers (with proper socialization), but he perceives small animals exclusively as prey. It is better to keep it in a spacious house with a large plot, where the dog can run around to its heart's content - an Azawakh is unlikely to be happy in a cramped city apartment with rare walks.

The price of an exotic breed averages 25-40 thousand rubles, and finding a purebred puppy in Russia is often difficult.

Artois hound

An excellent example of a hound dog, similar to a beagle, only larger.

The average height at the withers ranges from 52 to 59 cm, and the dog weighs 28-30 kg, due to its dense build.

They have a balanced, calm character and are distinguished by endurance, which makes them excellent assistants for hunters. At the same time, they have a tendency to dominate, so only strong people who plan to use the breed as a hunting assistant, and not as a companion for the whole family, should get them.

A dog cannot be called expensive - in many nurseries it can be purchased for 20-30 thousand rubles, and from ordinary breeders the price is often reduced to 15 thousand.

Great Vendean griffin

A born hunter who rightfully holds the title “dog of French kings.” The breed was developed back in the sixteenth century and has since been popular both in its homeland and throughout the world. More miniature griffins were also bred on the basis of this breed.

Representatives of this breed have a height of 60 to 69 kg (males are slightly larger) with a height of 25-35 kg.

A good-natured character is sometimes overshadowed by outbursts of stubbornness and excessive persistence. In general, the content is not associated with unnecessary difficulties and complications. But here it is important to regularly inspect and clean the ears, as well as regularly comb the fur so that it does not get tangled.

Not suitable for city apartments - the dog needs space and the opportunity to run a lot, so it is better to get one for people living in rural areas.

Dogue de Bordeaux

These Frenchie dogs are suitable for people looking for a solid guard dog who can at the same time serve as a companion. Indeed, on the one hand, the Dogue de Bordeaux is capable of playing with children for hours on end - most importantly, not with very small ones, so that the giant does not accidentally harm them. On the other hand, he copes well with the function of a watchman. The appearance alone is enough to deter most potential thieves. The height at the withers is 58-68 cm and it weighs accordingly - at least 45-50 kg. Males are noticeably larger and have a more restless character.

A huge plus is the habit of loneliness. Unlike most dogs, Dogues de Bordeaux calmly accept the absence of their owners and are able to wait for loved ones from morning to evening, enjoying the few hours spent together.

The cost of puppies is high - depending on the class of parents and club membership, it can range from 30 to 50 thousand rubles.

Beauceron

For our country, the French Shepherd is a rare sight. They were originally bred as a shepherd dog, but over time their functionality expanded and today they are often used as watchdogs. They are intellectually developed, thanks to which they can make decisions in difficult situations. At the same time, it is precisely because of intelligence that difficulties often arise - the dog tries to dominate its owners, which it should never be allowed to do.

An additional advantage is the habit of spending a lot of time alone. It is not necessary to entertain your pet with constant games - he likes to play on his own, and also doze off in a cozy place.

The height at the withers reaches 60-70 cm, and the average Beauceron weighs 30-45 kilograms. The size and weight of females is almost always smaller than that of males.

Buying a puppy can be difficult. First you need to find him, and there are few Beauceron breeders in Russia. In addition, high prices are set for them - 40-60 thousand for pet-class puppies, and for a champion dog you will have to pay 80 thousand rubles or even more.

Briard

Another native of France, who easily copes with the function of an experienced shepherd. Security skills are developed - the Briard will never allow a stranger to encroach on the owner's property. And his dimensions help him with this. For males, a normal height is 62-68 cm, and for females - 56-64 cm. They weigh 30-40 and 25-35 kg, respectively.

When caring, it is important to monitor the condition of your ears - wax often accumulates in them. If necessary, you should also trim the hair on the forehead so that it does not get into the eyes, causing unnecessary discomfort to the pet. Don't forget about the need to brush your briard regularly. Otherwise, the wool will roll into tangles, which can only be gotten rid of in one way - by cutting.

This breed remains exotic for Russia - not every major city has nurseries. At the same time, the cost of puppies is not at all prohibitive - a purebred Briard can be purchased for 20-40 thousand rubles.

Griffon Korthals

A hunting dog, practically never found outside of France and therefore relatively little known. Brought out at the end of the nineteenth century by crossing different breeds of griffins. Despite his intelligence, training can cause a lot of problems due to his difficult nature. The breed is not suitable for inexperienced breeders.

But when used as a hunter, it is a true all-rounder - it works great on rough terrain, in swamps and in the forest. Their excellent sense of smell combined with the ability to swim even in cold water makes them indispensable assistants.

Height at the withers is 50-60 cm, and weight is 23-27 kg. At the same time, males are 3-5 cm taller and 2-3 kg heavier than their female counterparts.

Auvergne braque

A hunting breed developed at the beginning of the twentieth century. Ideal for bird hunting. Hardy and friendly, they are also suitable for the role of companions - first of all, they are hunters, but the love of the people around them is very important to them. A sharp mind and the habit of following commands make training much easier. The main thing when keeping them is to provide them with a sufficient level of activity. Without this, the dog may gain excess weight and get sick. During winter walks, it is advisable to wear clothes - Auvergne braques are not used to Russian frosts.

Tall - on average 57-63 cm at the withers. At the same time, females are slightly shorter in height than males. With this height, they weigh a little, thanks to their leanness - 22-28 kg.

Although there are few nurseries specializing in this breed in Russia, it is possible to purchase a puppy. True, this is not cheap - approximately from 30 to 70 thousand rubles, depending on the status of the nursery and the category of parents.

Picardy Shepherd

This breed was also bred as a herding dog. For many centuries it coped with its function, but as a result of two world wars it almost disappeared. Only with great difficulty was it possible to save the breed and restore the number of representatives. Today, Picardy Shepherds are used not so much as herding dogs, but as companions. Calm character, sharp mind, love for children - all this makes them a good choice for many families.

The dogs are large - height at the withers averages from 55 to 65 cm, and weight - 23-32 kg. Males are always noticeably larger than females.

These shepherds need constant physical exercise. They will be a good choice for athletic people - they can run for a long time along with an owner who enjoys cycling or running. They also love to swim. Without loads, metabolism is disrupted, which often leads to dystrophy.

It is not easy to purchase a Picardy Shepherd in Russia - there are no kennels that breed them. You can only count on puppies brought from abroad. Their cost can vary from 70 to 100 thousand rubles - not a cheap pleasure even compared to most elite dogs.

Picardy Spaniel

Bred in France in the seventeenth century for use as a gun dog. But today they are used mainly not as hunting assistants, but as pets and companions. Thanks to their outstanding intelligence, they are easy to train - a smart spaniel will quickly learn a dozen or two commands and will delight their beloved owners with impeccable performance. An additional plus is his love for children.

Increased attachment to people. They don’t tolerate loneliness well, they quickly begin to get bored, and because of this, they start acting up. They need long walks, or better yet, additional physical activity, such as swimming and running. Then the Picardy Spaniel will be in good shape throughout its life.

Height at the withers is 55-62 cm, and weight is from 20 to 25 kg.

Pyrenean mountain dog

The main purpose of the Pyrenean mountain dog is to guard the owner’s property, and at the same time help shepherds in their difficult work. Despite their impressive size, they are distinguished by their good disposition and calm character. They love people in general, and they absolutely adore children; they are ready to tinker with children for hours, especially if they constantly come up with new games and entertainment. They perceive the entire family as a personal pack, so the level of affection is high, and they perceive the change of owners painfully.

The dimensions are more than serious - for males 70-80 cm at the withers, and for females - 65-75 cm. They weigh accordingly - from 55 to 70 kg, and sometimes more. Therefore, such a pet is clearly not suitable for cramped city apartments.

A Pyrenean mountain dog is not cheap - a healthy puppy from purebred parents will cost 50-60 thousand rubles. Even specimens with minor defects (pet class) cost no less than 30-35 thousand rubles.

Porcelain hound

A rare French dog breed, also known as the Porcelain or noble royal hound. Bred in the fifteenth century for hunting roe deer, deer and hares. Able to work both alone and in a flock.

The character is peaceful, calm. But during the hunt it is completely transformed - rage and cruelty towards the animal appears.

Training, despite her extraordinary intelligence, is not as simple as we would like - only an experienced mentor can make her obey unquestioningly.

The French Porcelain Hound is a large breed, 53-58 cm at the withers. Males are usually a little taller, only 2-3 cm. They are lean, so with this height they weigh 25-28 kg.

The maintenance is not too simple - you need to spend a lot of time with them, as well as provide constant physical activity. Without them, the dog does not feel well and may get sick.

The cost in nurseries varies from 25 to 50 thousand rubles. Much depends on heredity and the presence of awards in the parents, as well as the nursery itself.

French Spaniel

The French spaniel is the largest of the spaniels. It was bred in the seventeenth century to be a powerful and durable hunting assistant. At the same time, aggressiveness is reduced so that the dog becomes not only a hunter, but also a faithful companion who loves his owner and his entire family.

An important advantage is the habit of pleasing the owner. Thanks to this, training is greatly simplified. The French Spaniel, like all hunting dog breeds, is distinguished by its intelligence. And when combined with this quality, training turns into real entertainment for both the dog and the owner.

This French dog boasts a height of 55-63 cm and weighs from 20 to 27 kg.

Standards of the Great Anglo-French Hound

Color - there are three subspecies of dogs:

  • The Greater Tricolor Hound is the largest and most common type of dog among the hounds of this breed group. It was obtained by crossing English Foxhounds with Gascon-Sentoi and Poitevin dogs. The large Anglo-French tricolor hound inherited its hunting instincts from its English relatives, and its appearance from the French. It has a three-color color - black, white with red non-smoky spots.
  • The Great Black Breeding Hound is a large specimen, found mainly in the south of France and used only for hunting. It was obtained by crossing English Foxhounds with the blue dogs Gascon and Sentoya. The dog is two-colored, black and white, with gray-black and light spots on its paws. There may be a slight tan on the cheeks, around the eyebrows, under the eyes, ears and at the very bottom of the tail.
  • The Great Greyhound is a very rare breed today. Obtained by crossing English Foxhounds with Beagles. The color is white with red, sometimes more red or yellow.

Fluffy French dogs

Fluffy dogs look great, and it’s always a pleasure to pet such a pet. But it can be difficult to care for such breeds. Therefore, it would be a good idea to find out in a timely manner whether unnecessary problems will arise with your pet’s fur, so as not to later regret the poor choice. The following French breeds are considered the most fluffy:

  • large Vendean griffon,

  • porcelain hound,

  • briar,

  • griffon Korthals,

  • Picardy Spaniel,

  • pyrenees mountain dog,

  • Picardy Shepherd,

  • french spaniel,

  • papillon or continental toy spaniel,

  • small lion dog,

  • Vendean Basset Griffon,

  • Pyrenean Shepherd,

  • medium Vendean griffon,

  • bichon frize,

  • poodle.

Conditions of detention

The Anglo-French Miniature Hound needs training, long runs and exercise. The dog will be happy to accompany its owner on a bike ride and will bring him a stick or a ball during a walk in the park. Without physical activity, the dog's character can deteriorate, this will manifest itself in disobedience, uncontrollable barking, and nervousness. It is advisable to take your dog out into nature at least once a week so that your pet can enjoy a walk.

Second section: hound dogs following the blood trail

An alternative name for this section is folding. These animals follow the scent of blood and follow it, accompanying their actions with a loud bark. They have the most acute sense of smell and are able to smell a shot animal by the blood that has long been absorbed into the ground.

Alpine dachshund

Externally, this dog is very similar to a dachshund. The main difference is the straight placement of the limbs, as well as larger dimensions.

The Alpine dachshund was bred in Austria to chase medium-sized game (foxes and hares) back in the 19th century, but its popularity abroad is not high. The majority of nurseries are located in the homeland of the four-legged animal, which affects its cost and small number.

Bavarian mountain

The hound breed from Germany, like the Alpine dachshund, is not widespread abroad. Its breeding is strictly controlled by local breeders.

The Bavarian Mountain Dog has a long body shape and short, shiny coat of red or brindle color. Despite its courage and energy, this dog is very careful. During the wild boar's rut, she tries to remain as vigilant as possible, preventing the animal from approaching from behind to attack.

Hanoverian

Due to the ban on hunting, the Hanoverian hounds also turned out to be unclaimed, but their keen sense of smell could be adapted for another task - searching for wounded people. Hanoverian dogs do not tolerate loneliness and an inactive lifestyle, so they can and should be involved in work and communication with other animals.

Character

The dog has a temperament typical of most hounds. This breed is extremely affectionate with its family. Known for being extremely loyal, the Ariegeois will happily accompany its owners wherever they go, as this dog wants nothing more than to be with its family.

As is the case with many other similar breeds, they are exceptionally gentle and patient with children when they have been properly socialized with them. Many members of the breed form very close bonds with children, especially those who spend a lot of time with them.

These dogs were bred to sometimes work in the company of unfamiliar hunters. As a result, this dog exhibits low levels of aggression towards humans.

Some members of the breed are very affectionate and friendly with strangers, while others can be reserved and even somewhat shy. She would be a poor guard dog, as most would either warmly greet an intruder or avoid them instead of being aggressive.

Bred to work in large packs that sometimes contain dozens of dogs, Ariegeois exhibit very low levels of aggression towards other dogs. When properly socialized, this breed generally has very few problems with other dogs, and most members of the breed would prefer to share their lives with at least one, and preferably several, other dogs.

That being said, this dog is a hunter and will chase and attack almost any other type of animal. As with all dogs, they can be trained to accept pets such as cats if raised with them from an early age. However, some representatives of the breed never fully trust even those cats that it has known since childhood, and an Ariegeois living in peace and harmony with its owner's cats can still attack and even kill a neighbor's cat with which it is unfamiliar.

The Ariège Hound was bred for hunting and he is a highly skilled dog. This breed is said to have amazing speed and greater stamina than almost any other hound of its size.

Such abilities are highly desirable for a hunter, but less desirable for most pet owners. The breed has very significant exercise requirements and they need an hour of vigorous exercise daily.

This dog needs a long daily walk at a minimum. Dogs that are not given the proper outlet for their energy will almost certainly develop behavioral problems such as destructiveness, hyperactivity and excessive barking.

They adapt very poorly to apartment life and do much better when given a yard large enough to run around in. As a rule, hounds are extremely stubborn and will actively resist and refuse training.

In particular, once dogs are out on the trail, it is almost impossible to get them back. The dog becomes so single-minded and dedicated to the pursuit of its prey that it ignores the commands of its owners and may not even hear them.

Like many other hounds, the Ariegeois has a melodic barking voice. It is necessary to ensure hunters follow their dogs as they follow tracks, but can lead to noise complaints in urban environments.

Although training and exercise can greatly reduce barking, this breed will still be significantly more vocal than most others.

Description

The Ariège Hound is very similar in appearance to other French hounds. However, this breed is significantly smaller and more delicately built than those breeds. Considered to be a medium sized breed. Males should be 52-58 cm tall, and females 50-56 cm.

This breed is definitely well built and relatively slender. Dogs should always appear fit and slender, this breed is extremely muscular for its size. The tail is relatively long and tapers significantly towards the tip.

The head is proportional to the size of the dog's body. The muzzle itself is approximately equal to the length of the skull and tapers towards the end. The skin is elastic, but not saggy, and dogs do not have pronounced wrinkles. The nose is convex and black. The breed's ears are very long, droopy and usually quite wide. The eyes are brown. The general expression of the muzzle is lively and intelligent.

The coat is short, dense, fine and abundant. The color is white with clearly defined black spots on the head and body.

These markings are almost always present on the ears, head and face, especially around the eyes, but can also be found throughout the dog's body.

Place of hound dog breeds in the generally accepted classification

According to the FCI classification, all hounds intended for hunting are included in group No. 6. It is called “hounds and related breeds” and includes 3 sections, which will be discussed in detail below.

In addition to the direct method of hunting, representatives of group No. 6 differ from other four-legged hunters in their numbers. These include 71 breeds! Most of them are practically unknown and are on the verge of extinction.

Health

This is a healthy breed and does not suffer from genetically inherited diseases like other purebred dogs. Such good health is common among predominantly working dogs, as any health defect will impair their performance and will therefore be eliminated from breeding lines as soon as it is discovered.

Most life expectancy estimates for this breed range from 10 to 12 years, although it is unclear what information such estimates are based on.
