Where to buy a puppy
The most popular designer breeds in the United States. It’s not difficult to find a Chowsky puppy or an adult mixed breed there. In Europe, the fashion for hybrid breeds has not gained such momentum, the demand is small and there are only a few breeders. More often these are people who run nurseries. According to the rules, only healthy pedigree dogs of two breeds can breed with each other. Finding a puppy outside of the US is very difficult. In addition, there are no clubs or registries where they could suggest the dates of planned matings.
Price
The price of a Chow dog varies, it depends on the breed of the parents, the appearance of the puppy, geography and other factors. If it is a cute teddy bear with a beautiful color, they can ask for $500 or more. If the puppy does not have an attractive exterior or is born from dogs of dubious origin, the price will be low, up to $50

Features of the husky and shepherd mix
Considering the variety of breeds of shepherd dogs and huskies, there can be many options for their mixed breeds. There are also unofficial names for such dog “mixes”: laikoids (if the mother of the puppies is a husky) and shepheroids (if the mother is a shepherd).
It is impossible to predict whose character (shepherd or husky) will prevail in a puppy obtained from a mixed mating
In order to obtain hardy and obedient working dogs - universal service dogs - two popular breeds are most often crossed: the German Shepherd and the Russian-European Laika. Consolidating the desired qualities, in the second generation they infuse the blood of the breed whose image they want to strengthen - usually this is a shepherd dog.
Appearance
The exterior of a mestizo cannot be accurately predicted. But the union of a Russian-European husky and a German shepherd will predictably produce offspring that are large and constitutionally strong. The puppies will borrow the color from one of the parents: they will be either black and white, like the Russian-European husky, or black-backed, like most modern “Germans”. Wedge-shaped muzzle, erect triangular ears, two-layer thick coat - both breeds are similar in this
But how the tail turns out - “donut” or “saber” - is no longer so important
We recommend reading: Instructions for use of Ovariovit
It is impossible to predict exactly what a shepherd-husky mix will look like.
Character and temperament
Crossing a shepherd dog and a husky produces deliberately active puppies, in which the advantages and disadvantages of the parents are unpredictably mixed. This dog can be recommended to an owner with an active lifestyle - it certainly won’t be phlegmatic. But you need to be prepared for quite probable disadvantages:
- tendency to frequent, loud and causeless barking;
- waywardness, frequent escapes;
- stubbornness, disobedience, unwillingness to follow commands.
Mestizos are smart, friendly to people and hardy, but they are not always suitable for protective service, since by nature they are often devoid of aggression towards people
A lot depends on the efforts of the owner - any dog is flexible in experienced hands. How successful they were will become clear by about eight months of age - then the puppy will enter the difficult adolescence period and show itself, as they say, in all its glory.
If contact between the owner and the mestizo is established, then you will get a wonderful friend
Attitude towards children
You need to be prepared for the fact that the mestizo will be less patient with children's pranks and familiarity. In such cases, the proud nature of the husky can rise up and suppress the tolerant shepherd dog. Simply put, to avoid problems, you should not leave such a dog alone with small children.
How does he get along with other animals?
The hunting inclinations of the husky make its mestizo not very loyal to small domestic animals. Such a dog is guaranteed to get along only with those pets with whom it grew up. What will happen to the rest is a big question. Most likely, a layoid will not deny itself the pleasure of hunting a cat, hamster or parrot - especially when the owner does not see it.
Trainability
Regardless of which parent’s blood will predominate in the mestizo, he will need systematic training - regular active exercises. Efforts should be directed towards those working qualities that it is desirable to develop in your dog.
The puppy's learning abilities should be excellent, although you will have to be more persistent and patient with him than with a purebred shepherd. You can begin a general training course from the age of five months, and protective guard service - no earlier than ten months.
Contact with the owner and systematic education of the mestizo will help avoid unpleasant and unexpected situations
Metis and mongrel: main differences
Some are beginning to wonder why there are two different names for seemingly two identical types of dogs - mutts and mixed breeds. Both are born due to the mixing of blood of different breeds, but there are differences.
Among the important characteristics that help to distinguish whether a mongrel dog is a mixed breed or not, the following can be highlighted:
- a crossbreed is special in that the ancestors can be traced and identified, they are representatives of specific breeds, with certain characteristics;
- mongrels are obtained due to the mixing of different breeds, and in a chaotic order (the pedigree is impossible to trace).
Character
It is impossible to predict the behavioral line of mestizos; they can take traits from both parents. But they have every chance to receive the best from their ancestors. If outbreeding is carried out by professional breeders, in addition to conformation, they will also be interested in working capabilities. For example, you want to see a dog in your apartment that is not too big, but has protective qualities; for this purpose, poodles are mixed with guard dog breeds. Most often the result is an intelligent, loyal, medium-sized dog. She will not bark at guests, but she will not let a stranger out of the house. There are exceptions to the rules when a huge, kind-hearted person grows up in a cramped apartment. He won't bark even if all the things are taken out of the house.
In most cases, half-breeds are quite adequate dogs, not aggressive and sociable. But some hybrids require special upbringing. For example, crossbreeds of small breeds can be too timid or, on the contrary, do not know fear and bully large dogs. And mixed breeds of large guard dogs are difficult to train; they should be raised from childhood.
Each hybrid exhibits its own qualities characteristic of both breeds, namely:
- if you mix huskies and corgis, the dogs will be kind, intelligent, they follow the owner’s commands well;
- bloodhounds (a cross between a bloodhound and a Moscow watchdog) are hardy, intelligent, endowed with a keen sense of smell, they can serve as service and guard dogs;
- Pitskies (pitbull and huskies) are infinitely loyal to their owner and kind, but they inherited a headstrong disposition from the husky, which can only be corrected by good upbringing;
- Tolmatians are good-natured and cheerful, but if Dalmatian genes take over, mestizos may not be very smart or stubborn.
Review of the most famous and interesting mestizos
Mixed dog breeds are sometimes so unusual that they become more popular than their titled purebred ancestors.
This dog is very similar to a shepherd, but the eyes give away the husky ancestor
Baby chow chow and husky - affectionate pet bear
The mestizo inherited many features of its appearance from the chow-chow: a fluffy fur coat and an incredible resemblance to a bear. From the husky he received amazing blue eyes, height and location of spots. This is a very kind animal, but needs serious training.
Golden retriever and dachshund
This is the owner of silk wool of the original color. From a dachshund he inherited short legs and an elongated body. Also called zolax.
Descendant of Husky and Corgi
At first glance, it seems that this is a miniature copy of a husky, black and white coloring and blue eyes complete the similarity. But the pet has an elongated body and short legs, like a corgi.
German Chow Chow or Chow Dog
The charming red pet with a mask on its muzzle, characteristic of shepherd dogs, combines the best characteristics of both parents in its exterior.
Golden Husky
The descendants of Siberian Huskies and Golden Retrievers are called Rehaskies. They adopted their good-natured character, ability to obey, and soft, golden-colored fur from retrievers.
Note! This mixed breed does not require long walks
Golden Husky looks very beautiful
Golden fur and sky blue eyes will make this dog the most beautiful on the dog playground.
Akita Inu and German
A charming pet with lush fur, whose character combines independence and wonderful hunting qualities.
German and Shar Pei
Crossbreeds of dogs of different breeds often differ in their original appearance. The German Shar-Pei has short hair and a crescent tail, more closely resembling a Shar-Pei than a Shepherd.
Welsh Corgi Pembroke and Dalmatian
The appearance of this little dog resembles a classic Welshman; he inherited a unique spotted color from a Dalmatian.
Utonagan
This is a large mixed breed dog, the ancestor of three breeds: malamute, German shepherd and husky. In appearance it resembles a wolf.
The charming utonagan has every chance of becoming a separate breed
Labsky (labrador and husky)
This beautiful half-breed dog resembles a gray wolf, a predatory forest inhabitant. Peculiarities:
- Leadership skills.
- Needs a strict and experienced owner.
- Long active walks are required.
Charpasset
This is a funny mixed-breed dog whose parents were a Shar Pei and a Basset Hound. From the latter he inherited long ears and a phlegmatic character.
Frops
A cute dog with a muzzle decorated with folds and round, erect ears is distinguished by good nature and devotion. This is a cross between a Pug and a French Bulldog.
Husky and pitbull
In appearance and “rat” muzzle it resembles a fighting ancestor, but the sky-colored eyes reveal the husky ancestor in the dog.
Pomsky baby
This breed variety has gained wide popularity due to its cuteness and good nature. Stunning appearance - a lush fur coat and piercing eyes - is the reason for the high cost of a mixed-breed dog.
Pomsky is a very popular mixed breed, puppies are so in demand that they are booked
Labgan
This is a hybrid of two breeds - Labrador and Afghan. It is distinguished not only by its interesting appearance, but also by its excellent watchdog qualities.
Shepski
This is the ancestor of two purebred parents - a husky and a German shepherd. She has excellent protective qualities, but has no sense of moderation and is very stubborn.
Note! The breed is strictly not recommended for beginners. Represents the result of a mixture of a pug and a small chihuahua
Distinguished by its energy and miniature size
It is the result of a mixture of a pug and a small Chihuahua. Distinguished by its energy and miniature size
Other Chihuahua mixes
There are several more dogs descended from the baby chi:
- With a continental spaniel: the result is a long-haired hybrid with elongated ears and sad eyes.
- With a dachshund: the mixed breed has short legs and a long body.
- With a beagle: a funny and dynamic baby with a tiny face.
Pug mixes
There are several such unique “mixtures”:
- Miguel (second parent - beagle).
- With Petit Brabançon.
- Bullpug (with bulldog).
A cross between a pug and a beagle – pure charm
Alaskan Malamute and Husky
This is not only a beautiful animal with lush fur, but also a very hardy pet that is not afraid of any cold weather. He loves his owner very much and becomes his faithful friend.
Husky diseases
Representatives of this breed are characterized by the following diseases:
- Dogs can inherit cryptorchidism, a genetic disorder in which one or both testicles do not descend into the scrotum. If you need a dog for breeding, choose an older puppy: by the age of 4-5 months, the testicles of a healthy pet descend into the scrotum. Otherwise, you will have to undergo examination. If a testicle is found in the abdominal cavity, surgery will help correct the pathology.
- Macular degeneration of the eyes is a disease that causes the Husky to lose his sight. The pathology occurs due to the limited consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids, contained only in vitamin supplements.
- Juvenile cataract – close inbreeding is to blame for this genetically inherited disease in huskies. Its manifestations (clouding of the lens, turning it milky) can be noticed in a puppy at an early age. Cataracts are removed during surgery: an implant - an artificial lens - is implanted into the dog's eye.
- Unfortunately, huskies often suffer injuries to the cervical spine due to the rash act of the owner, who decided to ride a sled dog harnessed to a children's sled. Grasping the leash fastened to the collar, the person gives the command “forward” and the animal takes off. An excessive load on the cervical spine provokes the formation of a herniated disc.
- Myositis occurs in dogs that are not warmed up and run outside during the cold season. Owners forget or don’t know that before such a walk the husky needs to be rubbed with hay. After exercising outside, your pet needs to cool down slowly and warm up in a warm room.
- The cause of gastritis in a husky is its excellent appetite, under the influence of which it can swallow any waste that seems tasty to it, including even non-food waste. Such intemperance and indiscriminate eating leads to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
Alaskan Huskies are real gourmets when it comes to food, but are not at all demanding of water.
Content
Metis have different purposes.
Decorative species live in apartment conditions, but many dogs are created for living in enclosures. They have guard, fighting or detective qualities. By creating hybrids, breeders achieve endurance and good adaptation of animals to the external climatic environment. Domestic dogs need walks in the fresh air, they should be played with, and exercised. Hybrids do not need to create special conditions of detention. They need their own corner with warm bedding and no drafts, clean bowls for food and water, and special toys designed for dogs. If the mestizo has long hair, it should be combed. Dogs need to be bathed when dirty. After walking outside, you need to check your pet for ticks, examine the eyes and ears in order to promptly rule out inflammation and suppuration. Dogs should have their teeth brushed periodically. If, while walking, your pet’s claws do not wear down naturally, they should be trimmed periodically.
As for health, mestizos rarely complain about it, since they have an enviable immunity and do without hereditary diseases. But this does not mean that the dog does not need hygienic care. Vaccinations and preventive examinations by a veterinarian are required for all dogs. Infectious diseases can be contracted through close contact with a sick animal, even if you have strong immunity.
Mating
Usually dogs of the same class are taken for mating. Ordinary dogs are never mixed with show class dogs. For mating of high-class breeds, the nursery always takes permission and confirmation of class membership.
For mating, a neutral territory is chosen, where the chow chows are introduced to each other. The process may not begin immediately; dogs may first get to know each other by sniffing and playing.
Pairs are selected taking into account the character, size and classes of dogs. The age of males for mating should be about 2 years, females are determined by the third heat. For mating, you need a quiet place where the dogs will not be distracted.
Nutrition
Let's start with the main thing: it is impossible to give such a dog artificial and natural food, alternating. Her body must get used to one food in order to always digest it successfully.
We recommend giving your chow chow ready-made diets - premium dry food. They contain all the useful elements, nutrients, in a word, all the components that his body needs.
Puppy up to 0.5 years old | One year old puppy | Adult dog (over 1 year old) | |
Dosage of dry food (in grams) | 200 | 350-450 | 500 |
Don't expect your chow chow to like the food immediately. He has to get used to it.
Important rule! Never feed your pet dog from your table.
If you give your dog the “wrong” food, he will develop digestive problems, such as food allergies or pancreatitis. However, it is not prohibited to give him fortified food, such as:
- Boiled broccoli.
- Carrot.
- Potatoes.
- Apples.
- Bananas.
- Strawberries.
- Cabbage, etc.
Chow Chow Care
The ancient ancestors of modern Chow Chows guarded the home of their owners. So, the best place to keep such dogs is a private house with a spacious yard where the animal can run around to its heart's content. All the owner will need to take care of is shelter from the sun and clean water, because Chow Chows cannot tolerate heat.
The maintenance of an apartment is also suitable for them, but in this case the owner’s housing should be quite spacious
It is also important to provide your dog with a daily walk. During the walk, active games and training are highly desirable.
Dog handlers do not recommend letting the Chow Chow off the leash while walking. It’s just that dogs have a complex, unpredictable character, which is why she and her owner can find themselves in an unpleasant situation.
Species with long hair require regular coat care - combing with a special brush. If this is not done, then over time the fur will turn into large tangles from accumulated dirt and uncombed hairs. You need to brush your dog often - at least 4 times a week, and even better - daily, especially during shedding. With short-haired dogs there is somewhat less hassle. It is enough to comb them 1-2 times a week. In addition to the aesthetic result, brushing brings the Chow Chow very close to its owner.
In addition to caring for the coat, the dog needs to carry out hygiene procedures:
- Bathing;
- Eye and ear care;
- Teeth cleaning;
- Trimming claws.
Chow Chows should be bathed no more than once a month, using a special shampoo for thick coats. After bathing, it is advisable to dry your dog with a hairdryer. The ears and eyes are wiped 1-2 times a week with a cotton swab moistened with a special liquid, which can be bought at a veterinary pharmacy. The teeth are brushed with a special brush or given bones to clean the teeth. Claws are trimmed as they grow.
What is the breed for?
This dog is multifunctional. Previously, it was used for security; it could neutralize any attacker, unarmed of course. But, even if someone, having a cold or hot weapon, approached a chow-chow preparing for defense, he fearlessly accepted the challenge and never retreated.
Of course, the modern representative of the breed is somewhat inferior to his military ancestor in terms of courage and bravery, but he has remained the same reliable protector.
The Chow Chow can be used as a comrade in arms, that is, as a watchman. He has all the qualities that make a guard dog, namely:
- Good vigilance.
- Patience.
- Excellent powers of observation.
- Distrust of strangers.
- Determination.
- Self-confidence.
- Fearlessness.
It is also advisable to hunt with a representative of this breed. It can be used to track and kill small and medium-sized animals. But, in order for a Chow Chow to become a successful hunter, he must learn the craft of tracking and attack for a long time.
Also, the ancestor of the modern representative of the breed was used in reindeer herding. He responsibly looked after each individual animal in the herd, preventing anyone from getting lost.
The Chow Chow is a favorite of the whole family, a good companion and protector. He will never put his household in trouble and will protect them at any cost. You can definitely rely on such a four-legged assistant.
How to choose a puppy
When solving the problem of choosing a puppy, you have to find the answer to a number of questions.
Chow-chow puppy with mom
Who do you want next to you - a champion dog, a winner of numerous exhibitions, or just a pet? The Chow Chow puppy you are adopting “for fun” may have deviations from the breed standard (spotted tongue, drooping ears) and even more serious disqualifying signs (narrow chest, undershot or overshot, incorrect tail setness). Most often, all of the above has nothing to do with health conditions, but are simply deviations in appearance and are quite acceptable for exclusively “pet” pets
Choosing a show puppy is more complicated. In this case, it is better to seek the help of a specialist or take into account the breeder’s recommendations.
It is important to know that it is better to choose a show-class dog at the age of about 12 weeks, when its “pedigreed” traits are more clearly visible. Girl or boy? Males are better suited for participation in exhibitions - they have fewer deviations from the breed standard, look more impressive and respectable. The Chow Chow girl is an excellent choice as a companion dog.
She is more affectionate, gentle and sensitive than the male
Girl or boy? Males are better suited for participation in exhibitions - they have fewer deviations from the breed standard, look more impressive and respectable. A Chow Chow girl is a wonderful choice as a companion dog. She is more affectionate, gentle and sensitive than the male
The bitch's attachment to the owner and members of his family is much more pronounced. The disadvantage of keeping them is the problems associated with the physiology of the animal.
At what age is it better to pick up a baby? For a show career, it is better to take a puppy that has grown up to about six months. At this age, the risks of making mistakes in assessments and forecasts for the success of an exhibition career are minimized. You can buy chow chow for your home at an earlier age. If there are small children in your home, who will undoubtedly see the dog as an incredibly interesting toy, then wait until the puppy is 4-5 months old - it will be easier for him to adapt to the not always thoughtful behavior of young household members.
Chow with long hair or smooth? Both of them have absolutely equal rights in terms of thoroughbred qualifications and enter the ring on absolutely equal rights. Smooths are easier to care for - they have much less hair and do not need daily brushing. Many people also note the more sociable nature of smooth-haired Chow Chows.
Where to get a puppy? The answer is obvious - only in a specialized nursery or from a breeder with a good, time-tested reputation.
Milaha
What to look for when choosing a baby?
- The color of the fur on the face, paws and under the eyes. This is exactly the color your Chow Chow will have when he grows up.
- A six-week-old puppy begins to develop baby teeth. The mouth, including the palate and tongue, should be blue-black, the tail held high, and the ears fully or partially raised.
- Observe the animal and determine its temperament. Cowardly aggressive puppies should be rejected by you immediately.
- Assess the condition of the baby's eyes: is there any purulent discharge or signs of active lacrimation. Examine the eyelids - one of the typical diseases of the Chow Chow, entropy (entropion of the eyelid), can appear already in puppyhood.
How to tell a purebred husky from a crossbreed?
In light of the active breeding of husky hybrids, it is extremely important for breeders when purchasing a puppy to have an understanding of how to distinguish a purebred dog from a mixed breed. Mixing of breeds can occur both in one generation and can be traced in several generations, since some matings are not at all planned by the owner
When buying a four-legged friend, you should pay attention to its cost. As a rule, mixed breeds will be much cheaper than purebred dogs
Sometimes such animals without a pedigree can simply be offered as a gift. Such situations will help a potential buyer understand the situation. Metis, in light of the inheritance of many traits from different parents, can be distinguished by a rather complex character. Therefore, the breeder is recommended to observe the puppy he likes, and also, if possible, get to know the animal’s parents.
However, only a genetic test can reliably determine that a pet is purebred; otherwise, the buyer can rely on the external characteristics of the animal, as well as the documentation provided by the nursery
The breeder should pay attention to the size of the animal, however, at an early age it will be quite difficult to determine whether the dog meets the standards. As a rule, a small puppy can grow into a big dog and vice versa
The main characteristics of the Husky breed are as follows.
- Animals stand out among their relatives by their “voice.” So, it is typical for the breed not to bark, but to howl. Moreover, this applies to all emotions – both positive and negative.
- Not all mestizos will have an innate love for children; huskies are excellent nannies, so they will try to accompany children everywhere, if there are any in the family.
- Huskies are unlikely to be good guards; as for mixed breeds with outbred animals, they, as a rule, have this instinct more developed.
- Purebred Siberian dogs do not have a specific odor. Because animals clean their fur on their own.
- Since the breed is positioned as a sled dog, a feature of such dogs will be strong limbs. Mestizos may not have this exterior feature.
- The main characteristic of the breed is eye color. Huskies are characterized by mirror-blue pupils.

Labrador Husky
The first thing to say is that a Labrador Husky cannot be confused with a Siberian Retriever.
An adult Labrador Husky, without an owner and a collar on the street, can cause some to panic: in front of you is a wolf, often white or light in color, just like Akella from the fairy tale “Mowgli”.
And in fact, the Labrador Husky resembles a wolf much more than the Siberian Huskies themselves.
And in your relationship with him you need to be very careful: like any wolf, these huskies have the temperament of a leader, a boss.
For example, the lack of food in a dog’s bowl will be accompanied by a rather angry, dissatisfied growl.
From childhood, you must raise your puppy competently, demonstrating who is boss in the house. Then your mixed breed will grow up to be a good-natured dog and will not differ in character from cheerful huskies.
The wolf needs long walks and games, but what is important: on the street, do not let him run ahead of you - a formidable leader may awaken in him
Crossbreed with a wolf
Many people confuse these mestizos with wolf-dogs, considering them to be the same breed. But, in fact, wolfmutes - and this is what such a crossbreed is called - have nothing in common with wolfdogs.
Outwardly, they are more similar to Malamutes - they have the same thick and dense, slightly elongated hair, forming a characteristic small collar on the neck, as well as feathering on the hind legs and tail.
In size, such dogs are somewhat larger than Malamutes - their height is, on average, from 65 to 75 cm, but depending on how the genes are distributed, a mixed-breed puppy can grow up to be slightly larger or smaller than the average height. But Volkomuts have a lighter frame and are more mobile than the phlegmatic Malamutes.
IMPORTANT!
By nature, volkomuts are not very aggressive towards outsiders, but they have a strong distrust of them.
Considering their more “wolfish” appearance than that of a purebred Malamute, as well as some irritability and unpredictability of behavior inherited from a wild predator, this can lead to certain problems when raising these dogs, as well as to conflict situations.
You also need to take into account the fact that such mestizos are characterized by increased aggression towards other dogs and the instinct to pursue prey. Therefore, wolfmutes need timely and very early socialization, proper education and professional training.
Health and life expectancy
First generation puggles, that is, puppies born from a pair of pugs and beagles, as a rule, have better health than their parents and future children. However, this does not exclude the possibility of inheritance of various diseases:
- Eye diseases (dry cornea, inflammation of the third eyelid);
- Allergies;
- Hip dysplasia;
- Brachycephalic syndrome in dogs with a short muzzle;
- Dislocation of the kneecap;
- Arthritis often develops in old age, making puggles more susceptible to cold and infections.
Breeders are trying to reduce the number of inherited diseases to a minimum, allowing only healthy producers into breeding, but not all of them. Life expectancy is usually 10-15 years, provided good care and nutrition. Puggles are required to be vaccinated according to the generally accepted schedule, starting from puppyhood and then annually throughout their lives. Regularly treated against external and internal parasites.
How puggles are bred
In a pair of parents, the dad is usually a pug and the mom is a beagle. This is explained by the fact that the birth of small puppies in beagles occurs without complications, while pugs often cannot give birth to large puppies normally, do not carry them to term and even die.
Appearance
Externally, Pomchi are very diverse, but some common features can be traced. Most dogs are small, light, and proportionate in build.
- Height at withers - 15-23 cm;
- Weight - 1.5-4.5 kg.
The head is wedge-shaped. The eyes are round, medium in size. The ears are erect. The muzzle is moderately short and slightly pointed. The jaws are narrow. The lobe is often black. The bite is straight or scissor. The neck is graceful, never very short. The legs are straight, parallel, the paws are small and neat. Help often has dewclaws. The tail is of medium length and can be straight, crescent-shaped or curled into a ring on the back.
Based on the puppy’s appearance, one can only roughly determine what an adult dog will be like.
The coat can be short, like a Chihuahua, or long, like a Pomeranian. Sometimes of medium length with pronounced fringes. With or without undercoat. The colors are very diverse.
Appearance Features
Representatives of different breeds are involved in the origin of the Alaskan Husky. Unique dogs were born not only thanks to the wolf, Irish setter and husky, as already mentioned, but also to the German shepherd, border collie and some other breeds. Initially, this breed was bred specifically for racing, so no attention was paid to its appearance. When it was created, they focused mainly on a simple country dog, used for sledding in Alaska and Canada.
The weight of male huskies is on average 21-25 kg, females are slightly smaller - approximately 17-19 kg. At the withers, the height of dogs can reach from 58 to 66 cm. Their skin can be one color - brown, red, gray, white or black, or be full of various shades. The husky's coat is rough and hard to the touch, which is striking in comparison with the soft, thick undercoat. Dogs are distinguished by good health and well-developed muscles. The slender body with a wide chest amazes with its flexibility. The eyes of the Alaskan Husky are usually brown, which distinguishes them from the Siberian Husky, which has blue eyes. In addition, dogs from Alaska, compared to Siberian huskies, are larger and more powerful.
Character and behavior
It is difficult to predict exactly what character traits and temperament a particular Chowsky puppy will inherit, but given the characteristics of both breeds, you can guess what to expect.
Most Chowskis are quite temperamental, independent, intelligent and self-sufficient. They become attached to the owner and treat other family members well. Watchdog and security qualities are developed to varying degrees. Some chowskis greet strangers with the influence of their tail, while others grow up to be fearsome guards. The attitude towards children and other animals greatly depends on upbringing.
What character traits a chauski inherits is a matter of chance.
Chowskies need early, comprehensive socialization and serious training. Without this, they grow up disobedient and wayward. These dogs are famous for their intelligence, but this does not mean their high level of obedience and ease of training. They are very alert, curious, energetic and playful. Sensitive and react negatively to cruelty. Almost always the Chauski is a dominant nature. May be aggressive towards other dogs. He gets along well with the animals he grew up with.
Upbringing
A dog prone to aggression and dominance, like the Chow Chow, is especially in need of early training. It is important that the owner is able to convey that she occupies the last place in the hierarchical chain of the family. This is necessary so that the animal becomes disciplined.
Understand that there is nothing cruel about the standard prohibitions for pets. So, it is prohibited:
- Feed the dog from your table.
- Allow her to sleep in your bed.
- Ignore her barking for no reason.
- Encourage unnecessary displays of aggression.
- Set it on other animals.
Basic Chow Chow training lessons should be taught using a leash and collar. The inventory will help you feel each other better. After you firmly fix the collar on the dog’s neck, fasten the leash to it. The essence of training is to gain complete power over the Chow Chow. Move forward, keeping the dog a short distance away from you. Do not forget that the presenter is not he, but you.
Don't let the animal pull you forward. In this case, stop and pull the leash to the side. Such manipulation will cause minor discomfort in the area of its neck, after which the animal will stop.
Go for a walk with your pet every day. He should get used to the space that surrounds him. If he gets angry at the sight of a person or animal, again, pull the leash up.
History of the Chow Chow breed
White Chow Chow
Today there is no reliable information about when exactly the history of the Chow Chow began. But the fact that it dates back several thousand years is beyond doubt. According to some data, back in the 3rd millennium BC. e. in the palace library of the Chinese emperors there were records about this amazing breed, which, unfortunately, have not survived to this day.
One version of the origin of the breed says that the first dogs of this type appeared in China as “gifts of peace” that the Mongol conquerors presented to the emperor. The bear dog came to the Mongols as a military trophy during clashes with the indigenous peoples of Siberia. Archaeological finds confirm that the ancestors of the Chow Chow lived in this territory.
The question of the genetic roots of the representatives of the breed remains open to this day. Many experts are inclined to accept the version about the origin of the chow chow from polar wolves. The fashionable legend that the first dogs of this breed appeared as a result of an interspecific crossing of a husky and a polar bear does not stand up to criticism.
Once in China, Chow Chows were initially the property of only the courts of high-ranking nobles. But gradually interest in animals faded away, and dogs spread throughout the country, they could even be found in the homes of poor Chinese. Control over the purity of blood was lost. The situation was saved by the monks of Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, Manchuria and Northern China, who carried out careful selection work and kept pedigrees of blue and black chow chows.
Europe greeted the “bear” dog as a strange beast from the distant Celestial Empire. The first “fluffies” appeared here in 1780 and for almost a hundred years they were perceived only as exotic animals. The situation changed in 1865, when Queen Victoria, fascinated by the plush miracle given to her, showed interest in the breed. In 1887, the British began breeding Chow Chows, and eight years later the breed standard was approved and the first Chow Chow Club appeared in the Old World.
The Russian history of the breed goes back about eighty years, when the animals appeared in the Soviet Far East. Later, after 1945, some of the dogs were brought to the USSR from the eastern regions of Germany. A more or less stable population was formed only in the 60s of the last century. It became possible to get closer to world quality standards for the breed only after 1976, when purebred Chow Chows from recognized and titled producers were brought to the Leningrad Kennel Club.

History and characteristics of the breed
The homeland of the Chow Chow dog is China. Many centuries ago, she accompanied nomads in the steppes, protecting them from attacks by predators. People noticed that she was very brave, protecting her owner, and was ready to sacrifice her life.
Important! Scientists believe that Chow Chows were one of the first dogs to evolve from their wild ancestor, the wolf. They made such conclusions after conducting DNA tests.
The first pedigree book for a representative of this breed appeared thanks to Tibetan monks. It was they who became the first breeders of large fluffy dogs. The monks carefully ensured that the selection of animals proceeded as expected, without flaws. Thanks to their painstaking efforts, many charming chow chows were born, which quickly spread throughout the world.
By the way, the first traveler who introduced Europe to this charming dog was Marco Polo. The first specimen was taken by him from China only in the 30s of the 19th century. The fact is that until this time the Celestial Empire was isolated, so few people knew about the breeds that were selected there.
The British were the first to undertake the genetic replacement of chow chow. UK breeders quickly determined that the dog had a strong character, a tendency towards independence and aggression. They decided to work on the representative of the breed, making him more tame and sociable. They succeeded! The modern Chow Chow is a slightly lazy, aloof, but very loyal dog that dotes on its owner.
History of the Australian Shepherd breed
Despite the fact that more than half a century has been devoted to the study of the Australian Shepherd, experts have still not reached a consensus on its origin. It is believed that the breed was developed in the USA, but the history of the appearance of Aussies still goes back to Australia and is associated with the name of Eliza Forlong, the founder of Merino breeding and the production of high-quality wool on the southern continent.
In the thirties of the 19th century, she and her family settled near Campbell Town, a small town in the east of Tasmania (Australia), where she emigrated from Scotland with her husband and two sons. Here the family founded the Winton farm, where they began to raise sheep purchased in Germany and brought with them. Josef Pabts was hired as a caretaker of the flocks, who followed the Forlongs along with their herding dogs - Tigers, which are now called old German shepherds. This is a confirmed version of how the ancestors of the Aussies ended up in the “Upside Down Country”.
According to another theory, the ancestor of the shepherd is the Australian coolie, which is most similar to the modern Aussie. Farmers and breeders attempted to breed the ideal four-legged shepherd by crossing the Australian Kelpie and the Cattle Dog. In addition, Tigers and Border Collies took part in the creation of the breed. As a result of selection that exceeded all expectations, the ideal shepherd dog was obtained. The animal had strength and endurance, and was able to independently assess the situation during its work and make decisions without waiting for instructions from the owner. One of the important positive qualities of the Aussie was the lack of aggression towards livestock.
At the end of the 19th century, the intensive development of the American wool market began. The main emphasis was on Australian sheep, which were brought by ships from Australia. Along with them, they also brought a herding breed of dog, which amazed local cattle breeders with its abilities. These gifted animals quickly gained popularity in the western states, where sheep breeding was most developed.
America is the birthplace of the Australian Shepherd. The first officially registered breeder is considered to be Juanita Eli, who exported Merino sheep from Australia. Along with one batch of sheep, a shepherd arrived with a bluish dog. This was the first Australian Cattle Dog purchased by Juanita Ely, who made a huge contribution to the further development of the breed.
Australian Shepherds owe their increase in popularity among the population to Jay Sisler, a rancher in Idaho. The man was an avid participant in rodeo competitions. Usually there were shows in between. Jay Sisler entertained the crowd with performances featuring his Australian shepherds Queenie, Stubby and Shorty, which won the admiration of audiences not only in the United States but also in Canada. The Walt Disney Company invited furry artists to participate in the filming of two films. All this greatly contributed to the popularization of the Aussie breed, since many wanted to get such a smart and cute four-legged friend.
The history of the development of the breed is also connected with three generations of American farmers - the Hartnagles. While breeding sheep, they also looked for a suitable assistant among herding dogs. Their choice fell on the Australian Shepherd, which impressed with its working qualities. By the way, two puppies – Badger and Goody, purchased from Juanita Eli – were “nephews” of Queenie, Jay Sisler’s famous dog. Goody gave rise to such famous lines as Wood and Flintridge. The Hartnagles rank alongside Juanita Ely and Jay Sisler on the list of famous Australian Shepherd breeders.
Australian Shepherds finally acquired their current appearance relatively recently - in the first half of the 20th century. In 1957, a shepherd named Panda appeared on the list of the National Herding Dog Registry with official rights. This was the first significant recognition of the Aussie as an independent breed. In 1962, the American Australian Shepherd Club was registered, although in fact it existed five years earlier. In 1970, the first nurseries were organized - Maywood and Las Rocosa, and soon their number reached twenty-six. The breed standard was first registered only in 1977. According to the official version, which has been repeatedly questioned by experts, the Australian Shepherd was bred as a result of crossing the Pyrenean Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog and Collie.
Maintenance, care
These dogs should not be forced to take part in bicycle rides, nor should they be forced to take hurdles or jump from heights at the dog park. The structure of their hind limbs is such that they are straighter and therefore poorly absorbent; as a result, such “entertainment” can only bring obvious harm to such pets instead of benefit.
However, calm walks along dirt roads for an hour to an hour and a half twice a day are necessary for the Chow Chow; in this case, the dog spends energy on the street, and at home becomes more docile and less aggressive. In the summer, it is better for dogs with such an abundant coat of hair to go for a walk at cooler times - early in the morning and late in the evening.
After walks, you should remove any debris that might have stuck to the pet's fluffy fur; the dog should also be examined for the presence of various parasites. The paws are washed in warm water after each appearance on the street; they can be dried with a soft cloth.
These dogs are born clean, so they do not require regular bathing. But the coat will have to be looked after daily, as it is too thick and long. These dogs are scratched with special massagers or iron combs with rare teeth.
Young Chow Chows often drool heavily, causing the chest fur to become very wet. In this case, it is recommended to carry out local washing or use special dry shampoos.
Feeding
The main thing in ensuring the diet of these pets is to ensure that the daily menu contains all the necessary vitamins, minerals and other substances that the Chow Chow needs.
A sample diet should include:
- lean beef, sometimes poultry (boneless and skinless);
- heart, stomachs, liver and other offal;
- fermented milk products and cottage cheese enriched with calcium;
- You should include hard-boiled eggs a couple of times a week;
- cereals – barley, wheat, buckwheat, rice, pearl barley;
- fresh vegetables (bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots), as well as boiled cabbage and beets;
- apples, pears, sometimes bananas, you can include various berries and nuts in the menu.
Upbringing
The training of this willful dog must begin from the first day of its appearance in the house. Moreover, some dog breeders consider it too stupid due to the fact that the dog does not always follow commands that have been taught to it over a long period. However, many dog handlers are of the opinion that Chow Chow representatives are smart and quick-witted, but have a unique character, and therefore prefer to carry out commands when it is beneficial for them. And then they can do things that were not even taught to them.
When training a Chow Chow, the owner will have to be patient and willpower; in addition, you need to remember that these dogs are too touchy, so you can’t raise your voice at them, or hit them, even not hard.
But if you consistently and daily train these pets, you can achieve some success. Of course, these individuals are not intended for security and rescue work. But as a companion, with proper upbringing, they can be irreplaceable, of course, if there are no children in the house.
Parenting mistakes
The main mistakes when raising and training Chow Chows include:
- irregular training of the dog;
- communicating with pets in a harsh tone or in a raised voice;
- There should be no assault not only during training, but also in everyday life.
Breed description, standards and appearance
The Australian Shepherd is a balanced, medium-sized dog with a slightly elongated format. She is strong, muscular, agile and energetic. Boys are more massive, but not rude, and girls are graceful, but with developed bones.
The breed's working qualities are valued over size, but the preferred height is 51–58 cm for boys and 46–53 cm for girls. The weight of Aussies usually ranges from 25–30 kg for males, 18–25 kg for females.
There is a miniature variety recognized by the US Kennel Club - the Mini Aussie. Her height does not exceed 45 cm, and her weight is 10–18 kg.
It does not contain any admixture of other breeds - breeders obtained such dogs by selecting the smallest puppies from each litter. Otherwise, the miniature Australian Shepherd is no different from its larger relatives. Nowadays small dogs are used in sports - frisbee or flyball, because they are very dexterous and agile.
Official description of the Aussie (FCI breed standard No. 342):
- The head is dry, with clear features, corresponding to the size of the body.
- The skull is square, flat or slightly convex. The stop is clearly visible.
- The muzzle is wedge-shaped, ½ the length of the head or slightly less. The bridge of the nose and the skull are parallel.
- The pigmentation of the earlobes and lips depends on the color of the Australian Shepherd: in completely black animals and blue merle color it is black, in case of red color (ed), as in red merle, it is brown. Merle-colored Aussies up to 12 months old may have small pink spots on the nose that occupy less than 25% of its total area. In adult dogs, this feature is considered a serious defect.
- The teeth are strong and white, in the amount of 42 pieces. Closed in a scissor bite. However, a straight bite is not considered a defect.
- The eye shape is almond-shaped. The pigmentation of the iris can be brown, blue, yellow-orange, or shades thereof. Among Australian Shepherds there are individuals with heterochromia and marbling - this is not a defect. Black Aussies and blue merles have black eyelid rims, while red dogs have brown rims. The look is friendly and intelligent.
- The ears are medium, V-shaped, semi-dropping. Located high. When alert, the Aussie dog points them forward or sideways in a “rose” manner.
- The neck is moderately long, with well-developed muscles. The scruff is slightly convex.
- The chest is deep, but not excessively large, and descends to the level of the elbows. The back is straight and strong. The croup is slightly sloping. The belly is tucked in. The hemline curves beautifully from the chest to the hips.
- The tail can be long or short (up to 10 cm) - different puppies are born in litters. If there is no ban in the country, it must be stopped. In this case, leave a tail less than 10 cm long.
- The limbs are strong, even, equally widely spaced. Dewclaws are not acceptable.
The Australian Shepherd Dog moves freely, balanced and at ease.
She knows how to masterfully move from one gait to another and turn around with lightning speed. These qualities allow the dog to deftly manage large herds of livestock. When walking, the legs move parallel to the center of the body. As speed increases, they move closer to each other.
Color and coat type
The Australian Shepherd has a coarse, moderately long coat. The awn may be straight or slightly curly. The density of the undercoat depends on the living conditions: in cold regions it is thicker, in warm countries it is sparse. There is short fur on the skull, muzzle, ears, and lower limbs. The legs are well furred at the back. There is a mane and frill, which are especially noticeable in boys.
The Australian Aussie comes in red or black colors, as well as red merle (merle) or blue merle (blue merle). Tan is acceptable in all colors.
White marks on:
- chest, throat, legs;
- collar on the neck, if it does not extend beyond the withers;
- grooves on the muzzle and lower body.
There must be glasses of a background color around the eyes, even if there is white on the head. A white cloak is a disqualifying fault.
What is the character of the Chow Chow famous for?
The “plush” appearance and “stilted” gait have become the hallmark of the breed. There are quite a few rumors about the behavior of the Chow Chow. Some say that these dogs are arrogant, callous and aggressive, while others call them the most good-natured, loyal and sympathetic friends of man. The truth, of course, lies somewhere in the middle. This is how the official characteristics of the Chow Chow breed reveal the pros and cons.
Dog Temperament
By nature, individuals are gifted with a balanced type of character. Chow chows are calm, moderately aggressive, and restrained in expressing feelings. They do not show much affection for members of the household, although in their hearts they love the whole family, and especially their chosen pet. Who will become the privileged “leader” is decided solely by the pet himself. A dog's love is revealed by subtle signs: wagging his tail, light whining, touching his owner's legs with his muzzle.
Even when describing the breed, it is typical to use the terms “arrogant”, “independent”, “willful”. Indeed, these dogs have their own minds, but their actions are completely consistent with the perception of the environment.
If the pet feels that the owner is upset or sick, he will definitely find a way to provide all possible support. The Chow Chow accepts children well, but will not tolerate pranks and mischief. The dog may even growl dully to express his dissatisfaction with the rudeness or excessive emotionality of the household.
Representatives of this breed do not approve of close proximity to other pets. Good relationships with dogs, rodents, birds and cats are possible only under the condition of joint socialization, i.e. The Chao Chao puppy grew up side by side with other pets from an early age. Adults perceive the appearance of new pets with caution and hostility.
On a walk, the proud Chow Chow is not at all interested in street cats and dogs. But once an acquaintance has been established, the dog immediately decides on his behavior: whether he is hostile, friendly, or aloof. In the future, the Chow Chow's attitude towards the animal will not change.
Dogs of this breed are aloof and wary of strangers. A chow chow will never show aggression without a serious reason, but it will also not be delighted with the uninvited affection of a stranger. The dog will not tolerate a rude attitude towards himself or family members - he will get involved in a fight without hesitation. Strong jaws and powerful dimensions allow the Chow Chow to emerge victorious from most fights.
Raising and training pets
In appearance, the popular Chow Chow dog breed is associated with a cute soft toy. But in fact, the animal has a tough, independent character and impressive physical strength. Such a pet needs proper, strict education.
Dogs have been trained since childhood. But even a small Chow Chow puppy has a strong-willed character, so his mentor must be authoritative and self-confident. Flirting, giving treats, and even more so rude and emotional cries will not lead to success in training.
For a Chow Chow, it is extremely important that a person believes in his own abilities: a dog will never trust a doubting person.
Experts say that the perception of commands among representatives of this breed occurs in two stages:
- Feasibility assessment. The pet is wondering why to carry out the command.
- Study of host behavior. The dog compares its decision with the actions of the owner. If a person is confident in himself, the Chow Chow admits that he is right and does what he says. Otherwise, ignores the order.
The theme of the team is also of great importance. By nature, the Chow Chow has such a character that the dog looks for meaning in any action. If the command given to the dog seems unnecessary or insignificant, then it is extremely difficult to force the chao-chao to perform this action. The only leverage is the authority of the trainer. And if dog owners are not confident in their own abilities, then it is better to send the puppy for training to an experienced instructor.
At the same time, home education also needs to be given attention. The breed exhibits a sense of possessiveness, and small Chow Chows do not know how to cope with it at all.
The arrival of guests in the house will alarm the dog, because strangers have unexpectedly appeared on the pet’s territory. Due to the riot of emotions and experiences, the puppy will experience stress, and perhaps even show aggression. To prevent such excesses from occurring, you need to promptly engage in the socialization of your pet, and gradually accustom it to the diversity of people, animals, objects and phenomena in the world around it. To do this, it is advisable to walk the puppy in crowded places as often as possible.
