Many owners of huskies and other sled dogs recommend choosing X-shaped harnesses: due to the intersection of the belts, they evenly distribute the load on the body. Such a harness does not press or rub, and the animal gets less tired in it.
There are other tips for choosing and training a husky to wear a harness before starting exercises and riding:
- start early - accustom the puppy first to a soft collar, then to a leather collar, and when he gets used to it, to a harness (first a regular one and only then a working one);
- do not skimp on equipment - choose equipment made of water-repellent durable fabric with straps wide enough so that they do not dig into the pet’s body, and reliable fastenings;
- It’s better if there are several fasteners - it’s easier to put on the harness and not get tangled in it with the dog;
- Be sure to try the equipment on the animal before purchasing so as not to make a mistake - it will be extremely difficult to fit it to size.
The seams should be located on the outside of the belts to avoid chafing when riding. Not all manufacturers take this into account, sometimes sacrificing convenience to design. But you know that the main thing for a pleasant sledding ride is not beauty, but the comfort of your furry engine!

How to turn a dog sled
Lead dogs know the commands “Mennään!” (let's go!), "Seis!" (stand), “Vasen!” (left!) and “Oikea!” (right!). Usually the leading team with an instructor gives the direction to the other teams following it, and you do not need to tell the dogs commands in Finnish. But when turning, you should help the dogs turn by tilting the sled in the appropriate direction: if you need to turn left, you tilt the sled to the left, lifting the right runners of the sled into the air and help the turn by tilting your body to the left (Photo No. 9.); when turning to the right, tilt the sled to the right, lifting the left runners and helping the turn by tilting your body to the right.
