Husky riding: basic requirements and features of sled riding

Sledding is possible in winter when the snow is deep enough and the weather is acceptable. Previously, sled dogs were used by the peoples of the North for hunting, but now anyone can enjoy a ride in the capital and Moscow region.

Specially equipped tracks vary in length, and the number of animals in a sled can vary - all this affects the price. In addition to skiing, guests are usually offered walks with their pets in the fresh air, photo reports, and lectures about the life of many northern peoples.

In this article we will talk about various parks, reserves and ecological complexes where there is a sled ride service with man's best friend.

The process of sledding

Most often, a dog sled is used to carry several passengers at once. An alternative is to use carts equipped with rubber wheels when riding in the warm season of the year. The dogs are controlled not with the help of reins or a whip, but by issuing special commands from the driver. Today, the Husky motorized dog is used in two types of harness - a plow or a fan.

The first method provides that only one dog acts as the leader, and everyone else tries to catch up with it, while dragging the sled along with them. At the same time, the leader of the entire team (the smartest animal) obeys the commands of the driver (musher), thereby establishing the direction of movement for all pets. The second option involves lining up the entire team of dogs in pairs, so that the role of leaders is played by two pets.

The strongest dogs follow the leaders, while the hardy and strong Husky tractors are fixed closer to the sleds. One sleigh can be harnessed to at least 8 adults, more than 1 year old. In general, sledding with dogs involves a riding duration of 2-3 hours with a short stop for rest.

To provide tourists with the opportunity to ride a Husky, the mushers conduct a master class on the basics of dog management (even if at first glance it seems easy). Initially, it is necessary to take into account the factor of possible disobedience of the dog to the new owner. The technique of mastering control itself is quite simple, but in order to gain the favor of the leader of the team, you will need to use various psychological tricks.

When Huskies pull sleds for sled dogs, they experience absolutely no pain or discomfort. Dogs always like this process. The dogs are secured to the sled using a harness that comfortably clasps the pet’s body and chest between the hind and forelimbs. It should be noted that when riding children, Huskies reach a speed of no more than 40 km/h, whereas in professional competitions this figure is much higher. Riding harness

Sled harnesses for dogs were invented by the American Indians. Their design is designed in such a way that it allows dogs to feel no discomfort at all, otherwise Huskies would not carry luggage. X-shaped harnesses are considered the most comfortable. This is a design in which 2 belts are fixed at 4 points, encircle the pet through the chest, and then pass along the entire body.

In this case, the entire load is distributed evenly over the animal’s body, without putting pressure on the neck, and also leaving the limbs free. A riding harness for a Husky should have a perfect fit. For this reason, during the selection process, it is mandatory to try it on a dog. The entire structure should fit as tightly as possible to the pet’s body, without squeezing or moving.

To check, you can simply stick your palm between the animal’s back and the straps - it should fit easily, but the harness itself should not sag. It is necessary to pay attention to the following points:

  • The material from which the Husky harness is made plays a fairly significant role. It should be characterized by softness with simultaneous strength. The best option is when it is easily washed, but does not get wet. Therefore, you need to give preference to nylon. Harnesses made of leather and canvas are also used.
  • This design should have not one fastener, but several. It is best if they fit comfortably on the dog to cause as little discomfort as possible to the animal.
  • The width of the strap running along the upper part of the animal’s back should be about 4-5 cm; in no case should it be allowed to dig into the pet’s body during exercise.

When sledding, the convenience of the harness is of great importance.

Collar for Husky

As experienced dog breeders note, Huskies are distinguished by a certain degree of independence, for this reason the animal must have a collar. There are 2 types of collars most often used by dog owners. A manual walking collar for Husky, which is the simplest option. They are equipped with a semi-ring to which a leash located near the buckle is attached, which does not prevent the animal from moving its head.

To read: Domestic jungle cat: photos and videos, description of the breed

The half-ring may be located on the other side of the described accessory. Thanks to the large assortment of collars, today choosing the most suitable one is not difficult. At the same time as the collar, you can also buy clothes for your Husky, which are sold in specialized stores.

During the training process, you may also need a special collar for large breeds, which has a slightly different design. They are equipped with a handle to allow the owner to hold the animal if necessary. The ring for leashes is installed either under the handle or on it.

Sleds for sled dogs are so light that the animals do not feel them at all.

Shoes for Husky

There are several reasons to purchase shoes for sled dogs, and all of them play a big role for the animal. The main purpose of this element of dog clothing is protection from various injuries. After all, while riding, dogs develop significant speed, and if the pet stumbles upon any pointed object or sharp and hard crust, it can seriously injure its paws.

When using a leash for a Husky while walking around the city, an animal without shoes may suffer from reagents located on the sidewalk or road surface. This can cause irritation on the limbs, lead to cracks in the skin and the dog will not be able to participate in the harness for a long time.

When the dog is pulling the Husky sled and in case of any injury, the shoes will be able to prevent germs and dirt from entering it. Also, washing a dog’s paws after a run can be quite problematic, while washing shoes is much easier.

An activity such as dog sledding, led by a beautiful, massive and strong animal, will not leave anyone indifferent. Both adults and children will enjoy this pastime. Since the Husky sled is practically imperceptible, it can carry not only one person, but also several family members at once.

Dog sledding is a completely safe activity, since Huskies are completely non-aggressive pets, and before each race, detailed instructions on the basic rules of dog management are required. The tourist has the opportunity to try out both types of animal harnesses and then evaluate the merits of each of them, having first taken a ride on a snow-white sheet of snow on a sunny day. Equipment

To participate in racing, special equipment is required to ensure maximum comfort and safety for the animal. All ammunition must be made of lightweight and durable synthetic materials.

A specially designed harness ensures uniform load distribution during the dog's jerking and movement. Ideally, it should be made to order, with a soft lining, taking into account the characteristics and size of the animal, or be able to be adjusted to fit the chest and neck. A special rod (shock absorber) connecting the harness of the dog and the athlete protects the animal’s spine from sudden and excessive loads.

Basic rules for driving a dog sled

The driver of the sled stands on the heels of the sled, or rather, on that part of the runners that is covered with rubber and holds tightly to the back of the sled throughout the entire journey. (Photo No. 7.) The back of the sled must not be released from your hands even when stopping, so that the team does not break out of your hands and rush away. When driving over rough terrain, there may be turns, hills and descents, and other uneven surfaces; at high speed, the sled can bounce, so you need to stand on the runners, with your knees slightly bent, in order to more easily maintain balance on turns and ascents and descents. Dog riding is a separate, highly emotional moment for children and adults. The trip usually takes place with an instructor who steers the sled or kart while standing behind it. The passenger sits in front.

On a summer cart - a cart - one person rides at a time, there are almost no weight restrictions and an adult passenger can be seated. In the snow, on a sled, you can ride two people, for example, 2 kids or a mother and a child, but there is a weight limit. It depends on the number of dogs in the sled and weather conditions.

Trails of 200 meters, 1 km, 2 km, 6 km or more. The sled contains from 3 to 6 dogs. You can ride on your own, without an instructor - on a special scooter, on a sled, or on 2 sleds.

Accustoming a dog to move in a harness (the main command is “forward”)

Accustoming a dog to move in a harness
(the main command is “forward”)

A team consists of several pairs of dogs, usually from one pair to five.

The dogs are accustomed to each other before training. To do this, they are taken out for walks together on long leashes. If the dogs try to attack each other, the trainer warns this with the prohibiting command “fu” and strikes with a whip. After the dogs get used to it, they are kept and taught to walk together in a harness.

Mated dogs are first trained to be equipped and to move in pairs with empty dogs.

Sled dogs can be trained in winter and summer. In the summer they are trained in special carts, in the winter - in sleds, sleds and skis. The sled dog's harness consists of a special harness with lines, well fitted.

The exercises are structured like this. Two well-mated dogs in special harnesses are harnessed to a light sled or, in the summer, to a special cart. Having taken the dogs onto a well-worn road, they are taught to move in the harness in only one direction. To do this, the assistant goes ahead, showing the dogs the meat. The trainer, standing near the team behind the dogs, somewhat restrains them, and as soon as they run after the assistant, he pronounces the command “forward”, releases the leash and runs after the team. When the dogs catch up with the running helper, the latter feeds them meat. Such exercises are repeated until the dogs command “forward”; will not pull the sled on their own.

In the future, training becomes more complicated. The assistant does not run in front, but remains near the team and, as the dogs move, carefully places a small weight on the sled. The trainer, pronouncing the command “forward,” walks next to the team and, if the dogs slow down or stop, hits the sled or snow with the whip; before hitting each time he says the command “forward”. In the future, movement in the harness is practiced without an assistant, only on the command “forward”.

After consolidating the skill of transporting cargo in a straight line, turns to the right, left and stops are practiced. It's done like this. Having traveled 200–300 meters in a straight line, the trainer slows down the sled or sled, saying the command “stop.” As soon as the dogs stop, he repeats the command “stop” and reinforces it with meat, then strokes them and approves with the command “good”.

This training is repeated until the dogs develop clear responses to the commands “forward” and “stop” over short distances. After this, the travel distance is gradually increased to several kilometers.

During the same period, they practice the skills of changing directions left and right. Having reached a certain place where it is planned to make a turn, the trainer, holding the connecting belt, pronounces the command to turn “right” or “left” and points with a hand gesture in the desired direction and, as soon as the dogs turn, pronounces the command “forward”.

Rice. 41. Dog in sled

If the dogs do not make a turn, they are forced to turn in the desired direction with a blow of the whip.

Another pair of dogs is trained in the same manner to join the team.

Subsequently, the distance and weight of the load increase. At the same time, they improve responses to commands to turn and stop. Such exercises are repeated until the commands are executed without failure.

When the dogs in pairs learn to carry the appropriate load, they are used to tow the skier. They do it like this. A trainer with a pair of dogs dressed in harnesses and fastened together with a belt, or with one similarly equipped dog on a compacted road, gets on his skis, pronounces the command “forward” and starts moving first himself. Once the dogs pick up speed and tighten the leash, the trainer quietly forces them to tow him. When the dogs stop pulling on the leash and stop, the trainer uses the command “forward” to force them to move. When towing a skier, both dogs walk parallel to each other.

To stop, the skier pulls on the reins and gives the command “stop.” As soon as the dogs stop, reward them with a treat.

In the future, the towing skill is improved: while moving, they make turns and stops, increase distances and change terrain, move from the road to crust and loose snow.

It must be taken into account that when moving on thin crust, dogs can fall through and injure their limbs. In these cases, special stockings are put on the dogs' paws.

Having strengthened the dogs' skills in executing stop and turn commands, they begin to increase their speed.

Training is considered completed after the skill has been sufficiently consolidated.

Husky Park "Northern Wind" (MO)

Why shouldn't a puppy wear a harness?

When purchasing accessories for your puppy, you should skip the harness. Some experts may call it a half-stroke due to the negative impact on young animals. In such equipment, the puppy's front legs are often injured.

Collars are more suitable for fragile dogs.

How to choose a collar for a puppy

The way to choose a collar for a puppy is quite simple. If we talk about the material, it is better to choose fabric or leather products, the width of which is no more than two centimeters. It is preferable to choose a lightweight carabiner with a leash about two meters long.

Stopping and slowing down the speed of the team

Leading dogs know the command “Stop!” (seis!), but a team that has accelerated and is excited will not be able to stop immediately after the command to stand, so to quickly stop you need to use the brake. There are two types of brakes on sleds: for stopping and for slowing down.

To stop quickly, you need to press your foot on the brake in the form of a metal bracket with tips attached to the back of the sled. (Photo No. 11.) The sled will stop.

To slow down the speed, there is a special long triangular runner, ending with a rubber plate, attached to the back of the sled, which, when setting off, is usually lowered onto the snow. When you need to reduce speed, for example, on a descent from a mountain or in a particularly slippery place, you need to step on this runner - the speed of the sled will decrease. (Photo No. 12.)

Preparing the future champion

There is no consensus
on the age at which a husky can be harnessed Formally, according to the rules, you can put a dog in a harness no earlier than it turns one year old. At the same time, everyone understands that appearing in a harness at a competition is not the first acquaintance of a husky with a sled dog . It takes at least four months (and preferably more) to fully prepare even a naturally talented northern animal for racing.

Of course, several months are not enough to participate in races on a par with “professional” runners - during this time, many dogs just get used to working together, “running together.” However, to train huskies to ride in a sled , to train and improve their skills. Even if you do not plan to participate in sports races, joint physical activity is beneficial for both dog and person, brings pleasure and improves health.

The only thing that is definitely not recommended is to harness your pet until he is 6-7 months old. Before this, the skeleton of a teenage dog is very fragile, damage to it can lead to developmental anomalies and even disability.

Nevertheless, even until six months the owner of the future sled husky will have something to do. A whole range of preparatory measures is necessary, without which even a grown animal will not be able to get into the harness. Before the purposeful start of training, the future athlete already needs:

  • develop a confident habit of wearing a leash and walking harness and not try to remove them;
  • have a good understanding of basic commands;
  • be socialized - this will make it easier for him to get used to standing in a harness next to another dog.

The lifestyle up to six months should also correspond to the sports future. It includes:

  • complete nutrition, rich in all the biologically active substances a dog needs;
  • regular and intense physical activity: running with the owner, playing together, overcoming obstacles.

Please note that “ running and playing with the owner” for a husky is not at all the same as running and playing for a basset hound or pug. Huskies are professional runners and require exercise that is several times greater than that required by most other breeds.

"Zoofarm Shikhovo" (MO)

Address : Dmitrovsky district, Komarovka village, building 48 Website : https://www.shihovofarm.ru Telephone Cost : standard circle (450 meters) - 500 rubles.

Husky riding is an amazing tradition in the northern regions of Russia, which has recently become popular all over the world. To do this, you just need to have a team of trained dogs and organize a really exciting event for everyone.

Husky riding in the Moscow region takes place on the territory of the Shikhovo Zoo Farm Recreation Park. That is why hundreds of tourists come here to enjoy this spectacle. In addition, many people want to personally participate in husky riding. And there are no difficulties with this.

Husky dog riding in the Moscow region is carried out in the winter season, when there is snow underfoot. This is the best time to feel like a real musher.

The importance of choosing the right harness

You will put the harness on the husky , attaching it to the harness . It is necessary that the harness fits perfectly and is neither tight nor too loose. The comfort of the pet, and, ultimately, the success of riding depends on this.

Many owners of huskies and other sled dogs recommend choosing X-shaped harnesses: due to the intersection of the belts, they evenly distribute the load on the body. Such a harness does not press or rub, and the animal gets less tired in it.

There are other tips for choosing and training a husky to wear a harness before starting exercises and riding:

  • start early - accustom the puppy first to a soft collar, then to a leather collar, and when he gets used to it, to a harness (first a regular one and only then a working one);
  • do not skimp on equipment - choose equipment made of water-repellent durable fabric with straps wide enough so that they do not dig into the pet’s body, and reliable fastenings;
  • It’s better if there are several fasteners - it’s easier to put on the harness and not get tangled in it with the dog;
  • Be sure to try the equipment on the animal before purchasing so as not to make a mistake - it will be extremely difficult to fit it to size.

The seams should be located on the outside of the belts to avoid chafing when riding. Not all manufacturers take this into account, sometimes sacrificing convenience to design. But you know that the main thing for a pleasant sledding ride is not beauty, but the comfort of your furry engine!

The most durable and fastest sled, because it is driven by legends of sledding sports, multiple winners of “sled dog races”, professional Greenland dog sleds.

How to turn a dog sled

Lead dogs know the commands “Mennään!” (let's go!), "Seis!" (stand), “Vasen!” (left!) and “Oikea!” (right!). Usually the leading team with an instructor gives the direction to the other teams following it, and you do not need to tell the dogs commands in Finnish. But when turning, you should help the dogs turn by tilting the sled in the appropriate direction: if you need to turn left, you tilt the sled to the left, lifting the right runners of the sled into the air and help the turn by tilting your body to the left (Photo No. 9.); when turning to the right, tilt the sled to the right, lifting the left runners and helping the turn by tilting your body to the right.
