General characteristics of the Cairn Terrier breed

The name of this variety of terrier comes from the Celtic word “cairn”, which translates as “stone”. This dog deftly made its way between the rocks and could get prey from under any stone. That's why they called him that.

Now Cairn Terriers are not used as hunting dogs, although they are capable of exterminating rodents and chasing squirrels and cats without special training. But usually they are taken as a companion. These dogs are happy to accompany their owner on hikes, jogs, and bike rides. You can travel with them on foot or by car. They love to walk in nature, swim, and chase a ball. They easily learn tricks and can participate in competitions in dog sports.

About the nursery "Alekta Prima"

In 2004, the first female breeder from Moscow, now already a well-known female in Russia - IntCh Rus Ekan Bessy Beltran (Milla), arrived at the Alekta Prima kennel. At the beginning of 2005, we began to actively show Mila at exhibitions at various levels. The dog turned out to be very interesting in terms of exhibition. Her uncontrollable temperament and terrier drive led her to serious victories. Luckily for us, Mila also turned out to be an excellent performer. It was with her that serious breeding and development of the breed began in St. Petersburg. Now her children and grandchildren participate in exhibitions and in the breeding of our nursery. About the Cairn Terrier breed

The birthplace of the breed is Scotland. The breed began to develop independently in 1924, when crossbreeding of Cairns and West Highland White Terriers was prohibited. The Cairn Terrier is an unpretentious, small, strong, and brave dog. Not spoiled by selection, has very good health. Previously used for hunting rodents. Now this is a great friend for you and your child, a great companion. Kern performs well in the ring, he is cheerful, cheerful, and never shows cowardice or aggression. There is no barking or fighting near the Cairn Terrier ring. In Europe, the Cairn Terrier is widely used as a drug-detecting police dog. Kern also works as a therapy dog. Helps seriously ill people cope with their illness. After all, positive emotions work miracles, and the Cairn Terrier is a very positive dog. Kerns show excellent results in agility. This dog is very easy to care for; shedding is not pronounced in this breed, but seasonal trimming is required. Then your friend will have an excellent coat and a well-groomed appearance. The most important advantage of the breed is its character. A terrier in its essence, the Cairn is very different from many of them. He is not touchy or vindictive, has an easygoing disposition, loves children very much, gets along well with any domestic animal, does not get into a fight first, but stands up for himself, and has an open character. It’s not for nothing that in Europe there is a second name for the breed – Angel Terrier. The Cairn Terrier is a dog for the whole family, not a dog for one owner. He treats people very kindly. Difficulties (perhaps for some of the owners these will be advantages) The Cairn Terrier, despite its small size (height 28-31), is still a real terrier, active, lively, inquisitive.
It requires mandatory walks, in any weather. Kern needs consistent and firm parenting or he will take the reins into his own hands. After all, the ancestors of Cairn Terriers hunted predators in holes and crevices far from the owner, and at the decisive moment the dog made decisions independently, relying only on itself. Hence the alertness of the mind, the ability to independently get out of the current situation. You should start raising a Cairn Terrier puppy, just like a puppy of any other breed, as soon as it appears in your home. Kern is very smart and will quickly understand what to do and what not to do. We invite breeders, dog handlers, trainers, current and future owners of Cairn Terriers to cooperate. Sincerely, canine specialist, Tatyana Yurievna Zaichenko

History of the origin of the Cairn Terrier breed

Such small terriers with hard, tousled hair have long been used in Scotland to hunt foxes, rabbits, badgers, otters, and protect farms and crops from rodents. Breeding proceeded spontaneously, no attention was paid to external qualities. At first, all these dogs were simply called Scottish terriers, although they had differences in size, color and coat length.

At the end of the 19th century, Scottish terriers began to be classified. One group was identified, which included Skye Terriers, Scotch Terriers, and West Highland White Terriers. Kerns were also included here, only at first they were called short-haired Skye terriers. The only difference between them was the length of their fur. Their selection was carried out by Captain McLeod, who sought to breed stronger, more viable and prey dogs.

Only at the beginning of the 20th century these dogs were identified as a separate breed and called Cairn Terriers. The name indicated that they could easily hunt in rocky areas and drive game out from under rocks. At first they were crossed with other terriers similar in appearance. There are especially few differences with Skye Terriers, Norwich Terriers and West Highland White Terriers. The Kern breed was crossed with the latter breed to produce a white coat color.

In 1923, the English Kennel Club changed the standard, eliminating the white color. Interbreeding was prohibited. Since 1928, the new breed began to spread in European countries and came to America. Thanks to their friendly nature, unpretentiousness and working qualities, these dogs quickly became popular. They were used as companions, participated in sports, and starred in films. The most famous Cairn Terrier played the dog Toto in the famous fairy tale “The Wizard of Oz.” The breed came to Russia only at the end of the 20th century.

Cairn Terrier breed standard

The Cairn Terrier is a small, shaggy dog with a funny mustache and bristly fur. She has a compact, strong build. The average height at the withers does not depend on gender and is 28-31 cm, weight 6-9 kg.

Head

The head is small, proportional to the body. Covered with thick, protruding hair, which forms a mustache, beard, and shaggy eyebrows. The muzzle is cone-shaped, short, and appears wide due to the protruding fur. The forehead is convex, divided by a groove. The stop is pronounced, the bridge of the nose is straight. The lobe is medium size, always black. The jaws are strong, the teeth are large, and the bite is scissor-shaped.

The eyes are round, wide-set, dark. Because of the shaggy eyebrows, they are almost invisible, and the expression of the muzzle looks angry. The ears are small, set high and stick out vertically. They are triangular in shape with pointed tips.

Frame

The neck is of medium length, muscular, withers are clearly visible. The body is compact, strong, rectangular in shape. The back is straight, the lower back is convex and wide. The chest is voluminous. The tail is set high and of medium length. The dog carries it raised up, but does not throw it onto its back.

Limbs

The limbs are strong, muscular, smooth. They appear short in proportion to the body. Shoulders are sloping. The hips are large and the hocks are low. The paws are rounded, the front ones are larger than the hind ones, and the toes have dense pads. The movements are smooth, with a strong push from the hind legs.

Coat and color

The wool is double, hard. The outer hair is of medium length, straight, bristling. Longer on the muzzle, it forms feathers on the legs and tail. The undercoat is short, soft, close-lying. This coat provides protection from wind, cold and damage from branches.

The colors of Cairn Terriers can vary. The standard allows the following options:

  • wheat;
  • ginger;
  • cream;
  • grey;
  • ash black;
  • brindle.

It is desirable that the color is not uniform. Usually darker fur on the face, ears, limbs, and there may be brindle markings on the body. Cairn terriers of white and pure black color, as well as black and tan, are disqualified.

Photos complement the description of the appearance:

Differences with the Norwich Terrier

These two breeds are almost identical in appearance. But the Norwich Terrier is smaller in height, weighing about 5 kg. He has short legs, so he looks stocky. Unlike the Cairn, the Norwich has a strong, compact build and short, pointed ears. He has fewer colors: brindle is not allowed by the standard; only wheaten, red or black and tan colors can be used. Another difference from the Cairn Terrier is that the Norwich has a stiffer coat, but it fits tightly to the body and does not bristle.

You can choose a puppy that has already been born, or sign up for a puppy from a future litter. We will definitely choose the puppy you like!

We also plan to have a litter in our nursery in early March 2022.

By 2 months, the breeder can predict the quality and prospects of the puppies for the future. At this age, a puppy has the silhouette and movements that it will have as an adult. High potential is determined during long-term observations of puppies: how they move, play with peers, freeze in stances, react to various stimuli, etc.

The breeder's forecasts do not always come true 100%; the division into classes is subjective and we must take into account that we work with animals, and each of them can develop completely individually.

In dog breeding, puppies are obtained of various qualities: show, breed and pet classes. Quality determines not only the price of an animal, but also its purpose. Some then go to shows and breeding, others “to the sofa”.

How can you tell which puppy is suitable for what in the future?

SHOW-class or TOP-SHOW (from the English show - display, demonstration, appearance, ostentatious pomp, top - top, crown, highest).

These are the best puppies from the litter with great show prospects. Therefore, it is more correct to say not a SHOW-class , but a puppy with a SHOW-prospect .

This includes puppies that fully comply with the standard. They are of high breed, have a minimum of shortcomings and not a single defect.

Such puppies, as a rule, remain in the nursery for further breeding work with them.

Such animals are decoration, pride and advertisement of the nursery.

The cost of such animals is maximum, and sometimes the breeder will not part with such a puppy for any money.

The cost of such puppies is:

— girls 90-100 t.r.,

— boys 80-90 t.r.

Also, puppies with SHOW prospects can be purchased in co-ownership with a kennel, then their cost can be significantly lower.

If you want to have more guarantees when buying such a puppy, then we would advise buying it after changing teeth, when everything is clear with the bite, anatomy, movements and temperament. The older the puppy, the more accurate the forecast!

BRID-class (from the English breed - tribe, breed) Dogs of the BRID-class are quite equal in anatomy, dogs that have more flaws or are more pronounced than those of a show dog. These are, as a rule, females that form the backbone of kennels with good reproductive and hereditary characteristics. They consistently receive “excellent” or “very good” ratings at various exhibitions. BRID-class females are very widely used in breeding and, with the right pairing, can produce outstanding offspring. At the same time, BRID-class males are almost never used for breeding.

The cost of SHOW-prospect and BRID-class puppies is practically the same. The difference is that for some kids with SHOW prospects, the breeder selects owners who are ready, under the full supervision of the kennel, to occasionally show their dog at shows and cooperate with the kennel.

— girls 90 t.r.,

— boys 80 t.r.

PET class (from the English pet - pet)

These are puppies rejected from a litter that, according to the standard, have disqualifying defects that exclude the dog from participating in breeding (cryptorchidism, curled tail, malocclusion). These defects do not threaten the health and quality of life of the animal.

This includes bitches of lower quality than the breed (weakly expressed breed characteristics), in general those that are not of interest in breeding.

Such animals should not take part in breeding or exhibitions.

The cost of such puppies is lower than other classes.

— girls 75 t.r.,

— boys 65 t.r.

Characteristics of the Cairn Terrier

Kerns are typical representatives of terriers. They are active, playful, restless. It is difficult for them to sit still, they constantly need to do something, learn new things. These dogs love to play pranks and are very cheerful and sociable. They love when people pay attention to them and praise them. Therefore, this dog will try to please the owner and show what he is capable of. He is very devoted, strongly attached to all family members. Loneliness is very difficult to bear; one can become depressed and uncontrollable.

Representatives of this breed have the following character traits:

  • goodwill;
  • cheerfulness;
  • curiosity;
  • intelligence;
  • communication skills;
  • touchiness;
  • stubbornness;
  • persistence;
  • fearlessness;
  • initiative;
  • independence;
  • devotion.

The modern Cairn Terrier is no longer used for hunting. But these dogs retained their hunting skills. They love to chase cats and birds, dig up the ground in search of prey, and can easily exterminate rats on the site. They do not get along well with other pets; they tolerate them only if they live next to them from an early age. Although they do not show aggression, the cores see either a competitor or prey in any animal. They are fearless and often come into conflict even with large dogs.

Cairns do not show aggression towards humans. They are friendly, affectionate and obedient with their owner and family members. They love children and enjoy playing with them. But they won't become a nanny. In addition, the cores are owners and do not tolerate attacks on their things: toys, bed, food. This dog will never bite a child, but it can scare a child by growling. Representatives of the breed are wary of strangers and always warn their owner by barking. Therefore, they can be good watchdogs, although they are not at all aggressive.

Raising and training a Cairn Terrier

Although Cairn Terriers are intelligent and intelligent, they are a difficult breed to train. An inexperienced owner may have problems. It is necessary to find the right approach to the dog, taking into account the characteristics of behavior and character. Dog handlers give several recommendations for raising an exemplary pet.

  • You cannot shout or put pressure on this dog, they are very touchy. If the core is offended, it will become stubborn and disobedient.
  • These dogs often behave differently depending on the situation. Therefore, it is important that all family members maintain the same requirements and do not give the pet any concessions. Although many cores often do what is prohibited in the absence of the owner.
  • Education must begin at an early age. From the first days a puppy appears in the house, it is important to accustom it to the rules of behavior and teach basic commands.
  • Training must be regular and consistent. You need to be persistent and firm, but without being rude.
  • When starting to train a puppy, it is better to use not the command “you can’t”, but “you can”. Kerns perceive prohibitions negatively; approval and praise are more important to them. This will make it easier for the dog to learn the rules of behavior.
  • Training should be built in the form of a game. It is important to keep your pet interested so that he does not get distracted. You need to let the dog win, win the game.
  • Kerns often seek eye contact with their owner, understand intonation and even mood. They can be taught to respond to gestures.

If you gain authority from the Kern and train him correctly, he will be an obedient dog. He enjoys learning different commands and easily learns tricks. He will try to please his beloved owner, and in return he only needs attention and affection.

The Cairn Terrier is a unique breed; it combines all the best qualities of a city companion dog. He is your children's friend, a companion on any walk, elegant and elegant at an exhibition, and at the same time a magnificent athlete or hunter. This terrier is an extremely charming and cheerful dog.

Cairn terrier Alice from the house Elivs sings. We are amazed by the constant willingness of the cores to take part in whatever you do, just call. Swim, wash the floor, pick mushrooms, sing.

The breed captivates with its cheerful disposition and those sparks of mischief that always burn in the eyes of the core. You become more and more convinced that there are no shortcomings in the character of these dogs, there is not a single quality that would upset you and make you disappointed in them. A person wants to be loved for who he is, to be endlessly forgiven for bad moods, causeless screaming and nagging... This is exactly what the kern does towards the owner. Vengefulness, touchiness, meanness, and insincerity are alien to him. Boundless love and trust in all people, children, adults, friends and strangers distinguishes the Kern from many other representatives of the terrier tribe. At the same time, the core does not lose vigilance and can stand up for itself and its owner. These are amazingly smart, unobtrusive dogs, with whom it is pleasant to talk, as with a good person. We admire their constant willingness to take part in whatever you do, just ask. Swim, wash the floor, pick mushrooms, sing... Throughout his life, Cairn has been discovering more and more new talents... Thanks to the ease of keeping and their positive character, Cairn Terriers have long won the hearts of dog lovers not only in Great Britain, but throughout the world.

Maintenance and care

Cairn terriers are unpretentious and live quietly in a city apartment or in a private house. The main thing is to give the dog enough attention and provide physical exercise. You need to give your pet a comfortable place in the house. A closed house is better - cairns love to hide and hide toys and bones. A dog should have a lot of toys, not only as a puppy, but also as an adult. Then she won't be too bored alone.

If the core lives in a private house with a plot, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of behavior. These terriers love to dig in the ground. The dog can easily dig under the fence and run away. You shouldn’t scold him for his desire to dig - it’s an instinct. It is better to allocate a place on the site where the pet can safely dig.

With any method of keeping an adult Cairn Terrier, it is necessary to walk it 2 times a day for 1.5-2 hours. When walking, it is important to give your dog the opportunity to run around. You need to play outdoor games with your pet, let him run after a ball, a stick, look for hidden objects, and learn agility techniques. It is recommended to let this dog off the leash only if it obeys unquestioningly and immediately comes to the command, otherwise it may run away. It is recommended to take your pet out into nature several times a week and take it to dog parks.

Grooming

The Cairn Terrier's hard coat requires special care. Even though she doesn't shed, she still needs to be brushed. The undercoat often falls off and tangles form. Therefore, it needs to be combed several times a week with a stiff brush. It is better to untangle the tangles, but you can trim them.

Due to the fact that the outer hair does not fall out on its own, it needs to be plucked. Cairn terriers need to be trimmed regularly. For dogs that do not participate in exhibitions, it is enough to trim them 3-4 times a year. Exhibition animals have their fur plucked using a special technique every 2 weeks. It is recommended to regularly visit a grooming salon, where your pet will be professionally prepared for the exhibition.

Haircuts for wire-haired dogs are not recommended. This changes the structure of the coat, making it softer. But sometimes the cores are still cut. For exhibition animals, the fur on the belly, limbs, and face is trimmed, giving a more beautiful silhouette. You can also do a hygienic haircut by shortening the hair on the paws, under the tail, and on the face. This will make it easier to keep clean.

Bathing your dog is often not recommended. The coat of the cores does not emit any odor and has the ability to self-clean. Therefore, even show dogs are bathed no more often than once every 2-3 months. You need to use a special shampoo for wire-haired breeds.

Otherwise, caring for Cairn Terriers is simple. Grooming includes standard procedures:

  • clean your ears once a week, you can use a special veterinary lotion or chlorhexidine;
  • examine your eyes every day and, if necessary, remove discharge with a soft cloth moistened with boiled water;
  • Brush your teeth with veterinary paste 2-3 times a week;
  • wash paws after walks, lubricate pads with oil or cream in winter;
  • Trim the nails as they grow;
  • Every 3 months, treat for external and internal parasites.

Nutrition

These dogs love to eat and always seem hungry. Therefore, it is important to control the amount of food and not give in to your pet’s pleading looks. Otherwise, the core will quickly gain weight. Already at the age of six months he can be transferred to 2 meals a day.

You can feed your pet natural food or dry food. In the second case, it is easier to determine the norm; quantity recommendations are usually given on the packaging. But you need to choose only super-premium or holistic food, preferably with a minimum carbohydrate content. They should not contain artificial additives or allergens. Dry food can be supplemented with wet food: canned food, pates, but better from the same manufacturer.

Many breeders recommend feeding not dry food, but natural food; it is cheaper. You just need to make the right diet. It should include:

  • 40% lean meat, offal;
  • 30% porridge - rice, buckwheat, oatmeal;
  • 20% fermented milk products;
  • 10% vegetables and fruits.

Additionally, vitamin and mineral complexes should be added to food. Vegetable oil, herbs, fish oil, bone meal are useful. It is forbidden to give food from your table, fatty and spicy foods, flour products, sausages, and sweets.

Health

These terriers have good health, good immunity, and have almost no genetic pathologies. Life expectancy is on average 13-15 years. If the dog is properly cared for and fed, it will live up to 16-18 years. Representatives of this breed have few specific diseases. There are these:

  • Perthes disease;
  • blood clotting disorder;
  • predisposition to luxation of the kneecap;
  • obesity;
  • allergy;
  • dermatitis;
  • cataract, glaucoma.
