I’ve been doing instrument detecting for several years now, and now it’s time to replace my old metal detector with a new one. I don’t have a budget for devices like the XP Deus or Minelab Equinox yet; I had to find something worthwhile at a reasonable price. Consider the Minelab Vanquish 540 ProPack metal detector.

I thought for a long time and decided what to switch to after my faithful Garrett Ace 300i, which I worked with for several years and understood as myself. What I liked about ICQ was its versatility and simplicity, but at the same time, it was annoying that there weren’t many scales that I came across, for which I know a high frequency is needed, in difficult soils I had to turn the frequency down to half so that there were no false signals, respectively losing it in depth, and probably missing something interesting.

I compared, read, watched reviews. And then I just heard from the comrade how his comrade, in a place knocked out (including by us) raised several crosses. I asked my usual question: “What kind of metal detector does he have?” In response I heard: “Vanquish.” What kind of Vanquish is this?

I came home, went online and started reading. I wanted to raise the level of the device more, so as not to change it to something else for a long time, so I chose the highest model in the line - Minelab Vanquish 540 in the PRO configuration with two coils and wireless headphones - just go for a walk!

Quite quickly I found a buyer and sold my ICQ to a friend of mine, who needed a second “guest” device, he has an XP Deus, and you can’t give it into the wrong hands - the detector is difficult to master for a beginner. Having exchanged ICQ for money, on the same day I ordered a Minelab Vanquish 540 in the selected Pro configuration from the 12 Thaler store. I went to the village, thoroughly groomed by me and my friends back in the fall. This field, near the road, was not yet sown, and it’s convenient to get to it; you got out of the car and you can immediately go looking.

What settings to choose when going out with a metal detector for the first time?

I figured out Vanquish's settings quickly.
I chose the “All metals” mode, so I went with ICQ, sensitivity minus one division to the maximum, volume too, I decided not to wear headphones for now and started looking. I left in the evening, so I managed to walk for about four hours until the evening twilight.

The first find was a button-weight, then 3 kopecks from 1946, 2 kopecks from 1812, ½ kopeck from 1896, two Peter’s scales. I also quickly figured out the VDI number: 2 kopecks 1812 (copper) VDI 32-33, 3 kopecks 1946 (aluminum bronze) VDI 24-26, ½ kopeck 1896 VDI 17-18, scale VDI 12 -14, button-weight 11-12. I really liked this result, taking into account the fact that the field has already been combed up and down with various devices, including large coils, and in general - this is my first trip with Vanquish.

It is clear that I came across not only coins, but also garbage in the form of spare parts from agricultural equipment, aluminum wire, shot, lead bullets, and the ubiquitous traffic jams. However, this was also pleasing, because when we walked across this field last time with three instruments, there were significantly fewer color signals. So with 540 Vanquish you can safely go and rediscover your old places!

I would like to note that the search site is quite saturated with metal waste, both from the inn itself and from later agricultural activities. So, Vanquish perfectly voices all the goals, after several dug up useful and not so useful goals, you already understand where the iron is, and where maybe even a coin. Its voice acting is five-tone and, as for me, it’s enough to navigate by the sound that’s under your reel.

Already in the dark, near the car, I tried to turn on the backlight, which, unlike most other devices, shines red. This is also another innovation from Minelab, it seemed to me even more convenient than conventional backlighting, a kind of “warm light” that does not hit your eyes and does not reveal so much to you from the outside.

Where to put which coil on Minelab Vanquish

To search in the field, I used a large 12x9″ (V 12) coil; it has a decent grip, and I was also pleased with the detection depth. When searching with it, I noticed that Vanquish responds equally well and tenaciously to both large and small targets. It gives a perfectly audible and recognizable color signal on a coin, small scales, shot, lead pistol bullets also catch well from the pass. I think this is where its multi-frequency technology comes into play. Therefore, I concluded for myself that Vanquish will be very good for scales and jewelry with the small 8×5″ coil included in the kit. It is ideal for working on the beach, in a pit, in an excavation, especially when digging in the forest. With such a set of coils and the capabilities of Vanquish, I have a device with which I can successfully conduct any type of search, competing even with more expensive detectors.

General impressions after changing the device. Conclusions.

Based on the detection depth of Vanquish, I can say that all targets, except for the button-weight, were discovered “following the tracks” of my colleagues and gave a digging color signal.
That is, previous metal detectors did not catch or reach them - this is another plus in favor of Vanquish. Moreover, the soil is clay with black soil, which is not the most friendly for a metal detector and coins. I liked searching with Vanquish, firstly, it works using Multi-IQ multi-frequency technology, you go and know that you won’t miss anything. Secondly, despite the fact that this is a multi-frequency device, it is maximally adapted by the manufacturer even for the most novice search engine. The entire control consists of 10 buttons on the panel, each of which is responsible for a specific setting parameter, the indicator of which is displayed on the screen, no submenus, as they say, “press the button and see the result.” In its simplicity it can be compared with ICQ, “turned it on”, selected a mode, set the volume, sensitivity and went. Thirdly, you don’t need to change coils for one frequency or another; thanks to multi-frequency, you can see both scales and imperial copper equally well with one coil.

I would like to note the equipment, this is one of the indicators of how the manufacturer treats the treasure hunter. So, Minelab thinks about its customers. In the PRO package, you get two DoubleD coils 12×9 and 8×5″ inches, both with protection, 4 AA batteries, a charger for them, a drip-proof cover for the control unit with a logo, wireless Bluetooth headphones, a strap for the armrest. Thus, having received a package with a metal detector, you have everything to go straight to the detector, you don’t even need to buy batteries, just don’t forget to charge the batteries. Considering that the manufacturer declares the Minelab Vanquish 540 as an entry-to-mid-level device, not every device for beginners and experienced treasure hunters can boast of such equipment.

What batteries are suitable for Vanquish 540 or Vanquish 540 Pro Pak?

There are 2 power options available. The first is from AA batteries (their capacity is 2450 mA 1.2 V), which, I repeat, are included in the kit, or you can put the most ordinary AA AA batteries (preferably alkaline ones, as they are more energy-intensive). I go with my family.

Based on the results of the first trip with the Vanquish 540, it feels like the device sees deeper and more clearly than the stock Garrett Ace 300i.
Its multi-frequency clearly plays a role here. The design is a classic metal detector with a control unit on an S-shaped rod. I liked the rod, telescopic, sliding with latches, you can quickly fold and unfold. The lower rod for the reel is carbon. The length of the armrest is adjustable, the armrest is made of soft plastic, it will not be brittle in the cold and can withstand mechanical stress. The part of the rod on which the armrest is attached can generally be detached from the handle of the device, due to which its dimensions are significantly reduced and it fits into a backpack. I came across criticism online about the design, construction and color (red) of the metal detector. I don't quite agree with her. On the one hand, the red color attracts undue attention, but on the other hand, it is very convenient on a cop; when you put the metal detector on the ground, you are less likely to step on it, it is noticeable.

Regarding the design and construction, yes, there are no special innovations here, but that’s not the main thing, the main thing is what’s inside, the electronic circuit of the metal detector. Moreover, the Minelab Vanquish 540 provides the ability to update the software (firmware) through the official Minelab website by connecting the device to a PC. In my opinion, it’s very cool for the average amateur!

As the first experience has shown, the manufacturer managed to make a simple, affordable, easy to operate and configure multi-frequency metal detector for everyone! After all, previously, multi-frequency technology was the prerogative of only professional metal detectors. I didn’t notice any particular shortcomings with Vankvish; in a well-groomed place he gave me the finds, I’m not sure that if I had been with another metal detector the result would have been the same.

With the release of the Vanquish line of devices, Minelab has set a new bar, a kind of standard for entry-level and mid-level devices that all manufacturers now have to equal.
