Wheaten Terrier (Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier)

An amazing dog was bred in Ireland - the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. These animals are distinguished by unsurpassed hunting qualities and can become excellent protectors, watchmen and companions for humans. The first mentions of them appeared about 400 years ago. Since then, the breed has undergone changes, but its best characteristics have been preserved to this day.
How to properly care for these dogs? What features should you consider when choosing an Irish Wheaten Terrier? What is its life expectancy? How to organize your pet's food?

Origin story

The Irish Soft-Coated Terrier is closely related to other Irish terriers, of which there are four: Kerry Blue, Irish, Glen of Imaal and Wheaten. Dogs of this type are believed to have been around for at least 200 years and are likely to have fairly mixed origins. They lived primarily on small farms, killed rats and other pests, and could also be used to hunt otter and badger. The breed was officially recognized only in 1937. Since then, the popularity of wheaten terriers has grown steadily. In the forties they first came to America, where they won the hearts of urban residents. In the late 90s, they were recognized as the best dog for an apartment by New-York Magazine.

Mating

To breed Irish Terriers, you need to wait 2 years, when the maturation of the body is complete. Future parents can find each other through a kennel club or directly by agreement of the owners.

Dogs must have pedigree and show scores sufficient to participate in breeding. Only such representatives will be able to pass on all their advantages to their offspring. It is also necessary to check the availability of vaccinations according to age and the timeliness of treatment against helminths.

The pre-event meeting is held on neutral ground where the Irish can meet and play. After this, you need to move to the area that the male considers his. Mating is carried out in this territory, and then repeated at intervals of 1-2 days.

Read a detailed article on the topic: “Everything you need to know about breeding dogs: appropriate age, what to do if it doesn’t work out, rules and tips.”

Appearance

The Irish Wheaten Terrier is a compact, robust dog with soft, long, wheat-colored hair. Sexual dimorphism is moderate, males are slightly larger and stronger than females. Height at the withers is approximately 46-48 cm, weight - 15.5-18 kg.

The skull between the ears is flat, not too wide. The stop is well expressed. The jaws are strong. The muzzle should not be longer than the skull. Cheekbones are not protruding. Overall the head is powerful, but not coarse. The nose is well developed and black. The eyes are dark in color and well set. The ears are small or medium, thin, directed forward. The fold line of the auricle is level with the skull. The fur on the ears may be a darker shade. A scissor or straight bite is allowed.

The neck is moderately long, the limbs are slender, strong with well-developed muscles. The chest is deep with prominent ribs. The topline is horizontal, the hind legs are strong and well developed with well developed hips. The paws are small. The claws are preferably dark in color. The tail is set high and carried almost parallel to the ground.

The tail can be docked to 1/3 of its length in countries where such changes in appearance are not prohibited.

The coat is single-layered and consists only of guard hairs.

Soft and silky to the touch. In general, the cover is abundant, hair no more than 13 cm long is collected in curls. The color is wheaten, any shade from light wheaten to golden reddish. Dogs of Russian lines are usually as light as possible, while English ones are reddish.

Breed standard Irish Wheaten Terrier

Adult wheaten terriers weigh 13-20 kg. , height about 44-49 cm .

An elongated head with a flat skull rests on a medium-long neck. The ears are medium in size, hanging, raised on cartilage.

The eyes are relatively small and dark.

The stop is well defined. Muzzle of medium length. The nose is quite large and black. The jaws are strong. Scissor bite or straight bite.

The body is compact, elongated. The back is straight, the loin is short. The chest is deep, not too voluminous. The tail is set high. It is docked at 1/3 of the length.

The limbs are straight, of medium length, muscular. Small paws. Profitable fingers must be removed.

The coat of the Wheaten is different from that of other terriers; it is soft and silky rather than rough and harsh. The length of the hair is no more than 13 cm. It is wavy or curled, shiny.

Too fluffy fur, like that of a poodle, is not acceptable. It should fall, flow naturally.

Wheaten color of any shade (from light to golden-red).

Wheaten terriers with natural and trimmed, cropped hair are allowed at exhibition shows.

What nicknames are best for soft-haired Irish terriers?

Typically, puppies from six weeks of age already have nicknames written down in their pedigree. But this does not mean that you cannot come up with a nickname for your pet that will be used daily.

By the way, this breed appeared in such works as “The Wizard of Oz” and in the story about Scarlett O’Hara; it is quite possible to name a dog after one of the characters in these literary works.

But it is best to give animals names that best suit their appearance or character. For example: Aurora, Bestia, Marquise, Goldilocks, Hurricane, Pudding, Joker, Gangster, Dragon. Irish place names can be used: Dublin, Belfast, Killarney, Ennis. Or use a shortened pedigree nickname.

Character

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is friendly, energetic, very cheerful and sociable. In a sense, he is universal, suitable as a first dog for a responsible teenager, large families with children, and elderly people who are ready to walk a dog for a long time. The terrier will be happy to go on long walks, which can be either calm or active, and can join in the company while jogging or cycling. When necessary, he will be calm and unobtrusive.

The Wheaten Terrier is non-conflict and non-aggressive, it does not attack or provoke conflicts, but will respond without hesitation if aggression is directed in its direction. There is no aggression towards people in principle.

There is a possibility that the dog will not react in any way if a stranger attacks the owner, it may bark, and in rare cases it may grab the leg of the trouser. If guests arrive, the vigilant watchman will notify the owners with a cheerful bark and usually greets everyone in a friendly manner. They get along very well with other animals. However, we must not forget about the hunting instincts of the terrier. He may be partial to small animals and often enjoys chasing the neighbors' cats.

Wheaten terriers become strongly attached to family members and are selflessly devoted to their owner. They behave very carefully with children, taking care of the kids as if they were their own puppies.

Older kids will be happy to play for hours on end. The Wheaten Terrier is very patient with children's pranks and would rather get out of sight than snap, let alone bite. Of course, communication between a dog and a child, especially a very small one, cannot be left uncontrolled. A baby can hurt a dog and thereby make it wary of small people for a long time.

History of the breed

You are probably interested in knowing where this breed originates. The history of the Irish Wheaten Terrier is very interesting.

So, the first mention of this breed dates back to the eleventh century. The main habitat of these dogs was England and Ireland, which is where the name of the breed came from.

The Irish variety of terriers was strikingly different from their English counterpart. Breeding the breed lasted quite a long time and ended only at the end of the 19th century.

Subsequently, other countries besides Ireland, for example America, became interested in terriers. In addition, dogs were also excellent helpers in military operations.

During the First World War, Irish Terriers served as signalmen. In the middle of the 20th century, the breed received official recognition by the International Federation of Cynologists.

Education and training

The Wheaten Terrier is very intelligent and temperamental. As befits a terrier, he can be stubborn. In some cases, he may disobey. He follows commands perfectly when it is interesting and when the dog is well motivated. Wheaten Terriers are not suitable for people who expect unquestioning obedience from the dog.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier will happily take on any training that a person offers. He loves to learn everything new and quickly masters teams of varying complexity and direction, with the exception of serious service courses.

Wheaten Terriers are very easy to train. The main method of education should be positive reinforcement. That is, treats and praise for desirable behavior and following commands, no reward and a stern look for bad behavior. It is important to patiently and calmly ensure that the given command is carried out, and also to teach you to calm down. To do this, use three commands: “come to me!”, “no!”, “stand!”. Due to the dog's high energy level and love of jumping and licking, it can be difficult to praise him for his calm behavior.

By their mentality, wheat people remain instinctive hunters. In Ireland, certain groups of hunters still use them to hunt fox, badger and other small animals.

This is not practiced in other countries.

Theses

  • IMPT can live in an apartment, private house, city or village.
  • If you are obsessed with order, then these dogs may not be for you, as they love to run, jump, collect dirt and carry it into the house.
  • They are not aggressive towards other dogs, but they do chase small animals.
  • Wheaten Terriers do not tolerate heat well; in summer they need to be kept in an air-conditioned house.
  • Terriers love to dig and the Soft Coated is no exception. Be prepared for trenches in your yard.
  • They love the company of people and become stressed from loneliness.
  • They love children and get along well with them.
  • Independent and willful, training requires experience and knowledge.
  • The Wheaten Terrier's coat sheds imperceptibly, but requires daily grooming.

History of the origin of the breed

The Wheaten Terrier is a type of Irish Terrier. These dogs have been bred in Ireland since ancient times. The first mention of terriers with soft, wheat-colored coats dates back to the 17th century. These dogs lived in the houses of the poor, exterminated rats and other pests, and helped herd livestock. This wool is the result of folk selection. People selected puppies with a light color, which was invisible against the background of dry grass.

The dogs turned out to be friendly, loyal and cheerful. Therefore, they quickly became popular not only among peasants, but also in rich houses. They were used to hunt badgers, otters, foxes, and hares. These dogs are hardy, energetic and stubborn - they will not rest until they overtake the game. In the 19th century they participated in exhibitions, but in the general group of Irish terriers.

The Wheaten Terrier was created as a separate breed in 1937. The IFF recognized it only 20 years later. The breed appeared in Russia at the beginning of the 21st century and quickly became popular. But wheaten terriers are bred mainly as companions. Nowadays their hunting qualities are almost never used.

Content Features

The Wheaten Terrier has no undercoat, which means that the dog practically does not shed and is suitable for keeping in an apartment or house.

With good care there will be no specific dog smell. The dog does not tolerate frost very well, so year-round outdoor keeping is not suitable. In addition, the terrier must live close to people, it needs a lot of attention and communication.

The Wheaten Terrier requires a long walk and will not be content with short walks near the house. It will not be the best choice for lazy people who prefer to spend their evenings and weekends lying on the couch.

Wheaten terriers show good results in various sports competitions (Frisbee, pinch-and-go, agility, canicross, etc.).

Care

To maintain a neat appearance of a wheaten terrier, it is enough to bathe it once a week, dry its coat with a hairdryer and comb it. If this is not done, tangles begin to form closer to the body. It will be very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to comb them out. At the same time, the dog can still look more or less neat in appearance.

It is advisable to groom a Wheaten Terrier, but the haircut in this case has an aesthetic rather than a functional role. It is needed to emphasize the lines of the body and the beautiful figure of the dog. Haircuts are available at home and for exhibition.

Before the exhibition, the dog is cut according to a strictly defined pattern. The coat is cut short on the neck and chest. Above the eyes and on the jaw remains as long as possible. The legs are slightly trimmed. The fur on the body should follow the silhouette of the dog. The tail is cut short and neatly pointed. Owners of wheaten terriers who do not show their dogs often do home haircuts that are shorter than show ones.

Other important aspects of grooming include regular ear cleaning, teeth cleaning, eye rubbing, and nail trimming.

Nutrition

Owners often have to select the diet for their wheat individually. This can be high-quality food above the super-premium class or natural nutrition.

Food is selected taking into account the age, physiological state and taste preferences of the dog. If the dog is on a natural diet, the diet must be supplemented with vitamin and mineral supplements. Particular attention should be paid to the composition and quality of food during the period of active growth of the puppy and up to 1.5 years.

Wheaten terriers are prone to allergies, indigestion from fatty foods, and less often to gaining excess weight.

To form correct posture, bowls are placed on a stand. It is advisable to feed the terrier at the same time. The dog should eat the prescribed portion immediately.

Maintenance and care

The Wheaten Terrier is perfect for apartment living. Such a dog is not intended for an aviary; too strict treatment, round-the-clock restriction of freedom will gradually ruin the character of an overly energetic terrier. Which will definitely have a negative impact on his behavior.

Close to people, in comfortable conditions, the wheat farmer feels happy, but under one main condition - regular physical activity. Every day, morning and evening, you need to take your pet for a walk.

Organize active games during your walk. You can go jogging with your terrier in the morning. It is important that the dog spends the accumulated energy.

It is recommended that you take your pet out into nature or into the countryside at least once a week, where he can run around freely without a leash.

When considering the conditions of detention and the time of walks, the owner of a wheat breeder must take into account the fact that representatives of the breed tolerate heat very poorly and tolerate cold much more easily.

The beauty of the dog’s appearance needs to be maintained, as well as its health. To do this, we regularly perform the following procedures according to all the rules:

  • We comb the terrier's fur 1-2 times a week.
  • Haircut and trimming are carried out at the request of the owner. When trimming, the mustache and beard are left long, slightly correcting their shape. The hair on the neck, head and chest is short. The body and tail are designed so that the contours of the dog are emphasized.
  • We bathe 3-4 times a year. You should be very careful when choosing detergents, as representatives of this breed often suffer from allergies. In the summer, instead of bathing, we wipe the pet's fur with a damp towel made of natural fabric.
  • After each walk, especially if it took place in nature, we inspect the paws for cracks or other damage. If necessary, we provide treatment.
  • We brush our teeth once a week using veterinary toothpastes intended for dogs. This procedure will prevent the formation of tartar and remove the specific odor from the mouth.
  • We trim the claws with a nail clipper as they grow, otherwise they will interfere with the dog’s free movement. The cut should be parallel to the floor.
  • We clean our ears 1-2 times a week, depending on the degree of contamination. It is important to ensure that there are no symptoms of infection, such as excessive accumulations of earwax, unpleasant odor, redness... If we notice this, we turn to a veterinarian for diagnosis.
  • We examine the eyes daily and remove discharge from the eyes if necessary.

Before deciding on the method of feeding just the purchased puppy, find out from the breeder what the dog ate from him, dry food or natural food.

The fact is that you cannot suddenly switch a small pet from one food to another; problems with the gastrointestinal tract may arise.

Nutrition should be balanced. Depending on their age, we feed puppies from 6 to 3 times a day; the older the pet, the less often we give food. Adults feed 2 times a day.

It is worth noting that wheaten terriers are prone to calcium deficiency. This is why it is recommended that these dogs be given appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements.

It is important that slightly cool fresh water is available 24/7.

Making up a diet

The diet of wheaten terriers has its own characteristics. So, they do not need a significant amount of protein food; they can be given more cereals, vegetables, and fruits. You should not give your pet fatty, smoked, salty, spicy foods, sweets and freshly baked bread, beans and grapes. But in general, it is believed that the ideal option for such a dog is ready-made high-quality food, both dry and canned.

Choose the most suitable food for your dog: Pedigree, Grandorf, FortiFlora.

Puppies begin feeding solid food at three weeks of age. First, the food is diluted with warm water until it becomes mushy. Dry food should not be diluted with cow's milk; this often leads to stomach upset. Up to 4 months, puppies are fed 5 times a day, then the feeding frequency is gradually reduced to 2-3 times a day.

Health and life expectancy

Wheaten terriers are not free from hereditary diseases. They are dangerous and not very dangerous, some are more common, others are relatively rare. In any case, it is important for those who are planning to purchase a puppy to be aware of possible health problems.

  • Addison's disease (hormonal disorder caused by dysfunction of the adrenal cortex);
  • Allergy;
  • Tumor diseases;
  • Ectopic ureter;
  • Hip dysplasia;
  • Progressive retinal atrophy;
  • Nephropathy and renal dysplasia.

In soft-haired terriers, intolerance to anesthesia and increased sensitivity to a number of drugs are often noted, as in collies, shelties and some other breeds.

An important condition for maintaining health is routine vaccination, as well as regular treatment of external and internal parasites. Life expectancy is usually 13-15 years.

Irish wheaten terrier puppies

Of course, you need to buy a dog in childhood, when it is a puppy.

Prices for an Irish Wheaten Terrier puppy can reach up to 40,000 rubles. The average price is about 25,000 rubles. This is due to the fact that in our country this breed is very rare.

Choosing a puppy

Wheaten terriers are very popular in America, Canada, and Scandinavian countries. In Russia and the CIS countries, the breed is still small and is only gaining popularity. Finding a nursery in large cities is not difficult, but there is a chance that there will be no puppies in it at the moment. Often babies from good parents have to be booked in advance and waited for some time.

The search for a puppy should begin with choosing a breeder and parents of the litter. They must suit you not only in appearance, but also in character. There is a possibility that their traits will be passed on to their offspring. Be sure to evaluate the conditions of keeping dogs, caring for them and the quality of feeding. It is very important that babies are properly raised in the first two months of life.

This increases the likelihood of raising a healthy, strong dog with a normal, stable psyche.

Wheaten Terrier puppies go through several stages of coat texture and color changes before acquiring their adult, mature coat between 18 months and 2.5 years. Babies are born reddish, grayish, often with black masks, a black “strap” along the back or black tips of hair on the body. As you grow older, the blackness disappears.

Small wheaten terrier puppies are distinguished by a very dark coat color, which completely changes color by 1.5-2.5 years.

Price

Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppies from kennels usually cost from 35,000 to 45,000 rubles. The price is influenced by the geography of the nursery and its status, the quality of the producers and the prospects of the puppies. So pet-class babies are cheaper, while dogs, in which breeders see potential exhibition champions and future producers, can cost 50,000 rubles. And more expensive. The price of puppies without documents from parents with good pedigrees usually does not exceed 15,000 rubles.

Care

The Wheaten Terrier requires significant grooming, preferably brushing it daily. Grooming itself requires a significant amount of time, especially since the dog needs to be washed frequently. Its fur serves as an excellent vacuum cleaner, collecting any debris, and its color reveals this debris.

Often owners resort to the help of professionals in grooming, but even then the dog needs to be brushed as often as possible. Potential owners who do not want or are unable to care for a dog should consider choosing a different breed.

The advantage of this wool is that it sheds very little. When the hair falls out, it goes almost unnoticed. It’s not that wheaten terriers are hypoallergenic (allergy is caused by saliva, not wool), but the effect from them is much weaker compared to other breeds.
