Having inhaled this hellish mixture since childhood, he apparently decided, if not to fight, then at least to illuminate as much as possible the problems of the poor. Understanding this is the key to a director's creativity. Therefore, if the screen shows the slums of Johannesburg, motley gangs of armed rogues and in some places a pseudo-documentary style of filming is used, then we can safely bet that the author of the film belongs to Blomkamp. And it doesn’t matter whether there are aliens in the frame or robots, in the end everything will inevitably come down to social issues. By wrapping the spicy stuff in a fantasy action tale, the director has found a great way to bring social issues to the masses. In "District No. 9" there was a theme of apartheid, in "Elysium" - the problem of medical care for the population, and in "Chappie" the issue of teenage, even child crime, is raised. And don’t be confused by the “plush” title of the film, which sounds like cheap dog food, and the ironic poster. Despite the light-hearted tone of some scenes, there is nothing in common with Disney fairy tales a la "Real Steel". However, the film’s rating clearly hints at this. “Chappie” is a real drama, not without violence and tragedy, about a child who grew up in a criminal ghetto. A child whose relatives were mostly renegade bandits, and whose father taught his son to violence, theft and robbery from childhood. Without proper care, training and prospects in life. But he was struck down by an incurable disease, which gave the unfortunate man a short life span. Now imagine that this is not a robot from a movie, but a real child. Here are teenage scumbags beating him with stones, here is a psychopathic maniac cutting off his hand, now his father takes him on the case and forces him to kill. Introduced? It would be an epic mess. That is why Blomkamp cleverly, film after film, moves away from the realities of the present, projecting the problems of society onto a fictional world of the near future, coming up with futuristic allegorical moves like an alien invasion or the creation of androids with “awakened” consciousness. In this perspective, the director receives almost unlimited freedom, but when seasoning his creation with the next action sequence or purely entertaining scene, Blomkamp never forgets about his mission to highlight the realities of the present. In fact, “Chappie” shows, step by step, in detail, the recruitment of children into a gang. An insidious and cynical adult, using terminology understandable to a child, not forgetting to say “This is cool!” and blatantly lie, inclines the latter to commit crimes. First small ones, and then more and more serious ones. If the basic tactics do not work, then threats come into play - from children's scarecrows to the fear of death. As a result, the child somehow becomes an obedient toy in the hands of experienced puppeteers. This is exactly how it happens. And then we see another black guy with a Kalash, which is larger than the owner himself. Or we hear a report about another terrorist attack committed by a 12-year-old African girl. Or we watch young morons in the “City of God” and wonder where they come from, so cruel and with a complete lack of a system of moral values. Blomkamp does a masterful job of showing the process, but it doesn't look nearly as scary on a police robot. “You stick a knife in and he goes bain” - in this style, the criminal, acting as Chappie’s father, teaches the “son” several life lessons, and then we see the results of the training through the adventures of the titanium hero in Joburg. Despite the themes raised, the film is by no means as gloomy and pessimistic as it might seem, because Blomkamp writes social fairy tales, which means there will be a place for positivity. Dramatic moments inevitably give way to comedic ones and vice versa, and in the end everything transforms into dynamic action, which, although inferior in level to “District No. 9,” is not without good intensity. The obvious villains turn out to be not so bad after all, when the director once again takes the side of the poor. After all, it is not their fault that life is such that there is no other way to survive. Either you are a dead dog, rotting in the middle of the street, or alive, but cruel. The streets dictate the rules and the people living on them are forced to break the laws in order to survive. There is a street war going on, but a war is like a war. And on the other side of the scales of the city is a well-fed and wealthy class, engaged only in protecting their loved ones from the human scum living in the slums. By the standards of the lower strata of the population, the rich have everything, but the latter still commit crimes, acting worse than any scumbags, and this can only be explained by human nature, prone to envy, lust for power and violence. It's the people at the top who are Neill Blomkamp's real antagonists. In general, this is not the first time that the director condemns human nature and that’s probably why he makes the robot more sympathetic and humane than the homosapiens themselves. In general, “Chappie” looks like a real construction set made from various ribbons. There is clearly Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop with its social message, corporate crime, bloody action and robot chicken boss. And an even more obvious self-repetition (albeit partial) of “District No. 9” with all that it implies. The line Creator-Creation-Responsibility alludes to Mary Shelley's famous Frankenstein, especially when the Creator admits, "You have become something I could not imagine." The film also explores the traditional Robot-Consciousness-Human theme of cyber-fiction and in this respect is similar to such works as “I, Robot” and “Artificial Intelligence.” Finally, returning time after time to his native Johannesburg and raising the topic of crime there, the director does exactly the same thing as Ben Affleck, who made Boston famous. At the same time, it is difficult to accuse the director of any plagiarism, because everything was done in a very original way, in Blomkamp’s original half-ironic, half-hardcore style. Yes, the film is not as definitive and significant as the director’s first creation. Yes, the middle sags a little. But the picture is certainly cute and is able to hold the viewer’s interest throughout the entire running time. Funny in places, but overall sad, a film by South African talent, this time not about a single person, but about a whole family. With a traditional pseudo-documentary introduction, an adventure middle and a vigorous showdown ending. A brilliant and intelligent science fiction film with social overtones.
