Drontal+ tablets are produced by the world famous German company (Bayer Animal Health GmbH).
This medication was developed for the prevention and treatment of worms in dogs. Capsules are produced in 2 types: in the form of a bone for pets weighing up to 10 kg and in the form of tablets for animals weighing 35 kg.

There is another form - Drontal Junior. The drug is available in the form of a syrup (suspension) and contains 15 mg of febantel and 14.4 mg of pyrantel. However, it has been discontinued in Russia, and you can only find the drug in foreign online stores - look for packages marked “Junior” or “Puppy”.

Sometimes Drontal Plus tablets for dogs are confused with regular Drontal: the latter is designed for cats and is not suitable for dogs.

Indications

The product is intended both for the treatment of a pet infected with helminths and for preventive purposes. The medication is used for diseases such as:

• toxocariasis;
• echinococcosis;
• dipylidiasis;
• taeniasis;
• alveococcosis.

The instructions also prescribe the drug for dogs suffering from mesocestoidosis and uncinariasis. It is used for hookworm, trichuriasis and taeniasis. The medicine is intended for pets with giardiasis.

How it works

The effect of the anthelmintic from the German company Bayer is based on a combination of three active ingredients:

1. Praziquantel. Helps against tape and flat helminths. It disrupts glucose transport, leading to paralysis and subsequent death of parasites.
2. Febantela. Effective against roundworms and hookworms. It disrupts ATP synthesis and increases the permeability of parasite cell membranes, which causes paralysis and death.
3. Pirantela. Works against nematodes. Destroys the structure of cell membranes, which leads to disruption of muscle innervation and subsequent death of worms. On its own, it has little effect on whipworms and giardia, but in combination with febantel it has a detrimental effect on them.

The combination of praziquantel, pyrantel and febantel is the best option for anthelmintics. This combination is most effective and helps against almost all parasitic worms.

All active ingredients are absorbed by the intestines within a few hours and distributed in tissues and internal organs. Active components are excreted in urine and feces within 1-2 days.

1. Name of the medicinal product for veterinary use: trade name: Drontal® plus (Drontal® plus). International non-proprietary names of active ingredients: pyrantel, praziquantel, febantel. 2. The drug Drontal® plus is produced in two dosages, containing as active ingredients in 1 tablet, calculated for 10 kg of animal weight: pyrantel embonate - 144 mg, praziquantel - 50 mg and febantel - 150 mg, in 1 tablet, calculated for 35 kg of animal weight: pyrantel embonate - 504 mg, praziquantel - 175 mg and febantel - 525 mg, as well as excipients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, polyvidone, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal anhydrous silicon and food grade meat flavored additive. 3. In appearance, Drontal® plus 1 tablet per 10 kg is a bone-shaped tablet from light brown to dark brown in color with a dividing groove in the center. Drontal® plus has a wide spectrum of anthelmintic action against roundworms, tapeworms and Giardia protozoa parasitizing dogs, including Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, Trihuris vulpis, Echinococcus multilocularis, Echinococcus granulosis, Taenia spp. , Dipylidium caninum, Multiceps multiceps, Mesocestoides spp., Giardia spp. The mechanism of action of febantel, which is part of the drug, is based on disruption of glucose transport and microtubular function of the parasite, inhibition of fumarate reductase and ATP synthesis, increased permeability of cell membranes, which leads to disruption of muscle innervation, paralysis, death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the gastrointestinal tract. tract. Pyrantel embonate has a pronounced nematocidal effect, causing an increase in the permeability of cell membranes, irreversible paralysis and muscle contracture in nematodes, which leads to the death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the gastrointestinal tract. Pyrantel embonate and febantel are partially absorbed in the intestine and are excreted from the body mainly in feces within 24-48 hours. The mechanism of action of praziquantel is the depolarization of neuromuscular ganglion blockers, disruption of glucose transport and microturbular function in cestodes, which leads to disruption of muscle innervation, paralysis and death of the parasite. Praziquantel is rapidly absorbed in the intestine and distributed in internal organs and tissues; excreted from the body in urine mainly in metabolized form. Drontal® plus, in terms of the degree of impact on the body, is classified as a low-hazard substance (hazard class 4 according to GOST 12.1.007-76); in recommended doses it does not have embryotoxic, teratogenic or sensitizing effects. When deworming dogs, it is recommended to carry out disinfection and disinfestation of places where animals are kept in order to avoid re-infection. 16. When using the drug in accordance with these instructions, side effects and complications, as a rule, are not observed. If the individual sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug is increased, increased salivation, diarrhea or vomiting are possible. These symptoms are short-lived, disappear spontaneously and do not require the use of medications. 17. Symptoms of overdose have not been established. 18. Drontal® plus should not be used concomitantly with drugs containing piperazine due to possible antagonistic effects. 19. No specific effects of the drug upon its first use and discontinuation have been identified. 20. Violations of the recommended deworming periods should be avoided. If the next treatment is missed, the drug must be administered as soon as possible in the dose prescribed in these instructions. 21. Drontal® plus is not intended for use in food producing animals.

The dosage of the drug depends on the release form. So, a 10 kg variety for dogs is given in the following volumes:

The duration of treatment depends on the goals:

• For prevention, one treatment once every 3 months is sufficient;
• in case of infestation, drugs are used twice with an interval of 10-14 days;
• When treating giardiasis, the medication is used for 3 days in a row, the dosage by weight is not exceeded.

If therapy for helminths or giardia is interrupted, it is started again at the recommended doses and timing.

It is simple to use the medication: you do not need to limit your pet’s food or give him a laxative on the eve of the procedure. The drug is simply given in the morning before the first feeding.

Pets usually eat flavored tablets willingly, because... they taste like meat. If the pet refuses to eat the capsule on its own, it is disguised as a treat: a piece of minced meat, butter, cheese, cottage cheese. You can also give Drontal Plus to your dog by force: open the mouth and put the pill on the root of the tongue.

In what cases can a veterinarian prescribe the drug?
