A selection of smooth-haired dog breeds with descriptions and photos

When you get a dog at home, you want it to be a loyal friend and a favorite for the whole family. Smooth-haired dog breeds are ideal for this; caring for them does not take much time; most often they are medium-sized and peaceful in nature. Although among them there are also short-haired hunting dogs that are ready to protect and guard you.

Coat types

A dog's coat is a means of protecting the animal's skin from seasonal weather conditions. But this is also one of the most important characteristics of the exterior.

It is believed that the original coat of the ancestors of domesticated dogs was smooth , of different lengths (longer on the croup and tail, shorter on the head and limbs). During the selection process, certain breeds have developed wavy, twisted or curly hair with varying degrees of stiffness and density.

Depending on the length of the coat and the presence of undercoat, dogs are divided into three groups:

  1. short-haired (no undercoat);
  2. long-haired (undercoat is well developed);
  3. naked (bald).

At the same time, smooth hair is most often found in short-haired breeds precisely because of the absence of a second layer (or weak development), which makes the entire hair coat feel stiff to the touch.

Features of caring for smooth pet hair

A smooth and short coat also requires care . The dog is combed once every 5-7 days using a special rubber brush or silicone mitt to remove dead hairs. During the period of active molting, this is done daily. At the same time, a skin massage is performed, which improves the quality of fur and increases blood flow in the skin.

Afterwards, the wool is polished by rubbing the hair in the direction of growth with a piece of woolen cloth or cloth. Do not use combs with sharp metal teeth or slicker brushes, as they can severely scratch your pet’s skin.

There is often no need to bathe your pet; sometimes it is enough to simply wipe it with a damp towel or napkin. Water treatments are carried out no more than 3-4 times a year, using specialized zoo shampoos (Espree Argan Oil Shampoo, Artero Vitalizante, Hartz Groomer`s Best Oatmeal Shampoo, etc.). Short wool dries very quickly; there is no need to specially dry it with a hairdryer.

Flaws

In addition to significant advantages, dogs of smooth-haired breeds have several disadvantages that should be taken into account:

  • hard hairs of wool digging into fabric and upholstered furniture;

The graceful English Greyhound occupies an intermediate position between the large Greyhounds and the small Italian Greyhounds. The height of whippets is 44 – 51 cm, body weight is up to 13 kg.

Owners see pure merit in their pets. Whippets are clean, do not smell, rarely bark, and are well trained. They behave friendly at home and get along with children.

Other names for the Italian greyhound are Italian greyhound, small greyhound.

Italian Greyhounds look sophisticated and elegant, but are actually relatively strong and hardy. In European countries, graceful dogs still hunt hares. The coat is thin and silky. Colors - plain gray, isabella, black, sometimes with light inclusions on the paws and chest.

The height of the Italian Greyhound is 33 – 38 cm, maximum weight is 5 kg.

Dalmatian dog

Bright, elegant Dalmatians are remembered at first sight due to their peculiar spotted color. Black or brown spots scattered on a white background form a unique pattern in each animal.

Dalmatian puppies are born white, with a spotted pattern appearing at 2–3 months.

Dalmatian dogs are extremely active and cheerful. They love to be in the center of events, communicate with family, and take long walks.

The average height of a Dalmatian is 60 cm.

Dalmatians are often born deaf in one or both ears. This defect is associated with the color gene, but is not fully understood. According to statistics, every fifth representative of the breed suffers from unilateral hearing loss. But breeders and owners may not even suspect this and allow the dog to be bred: the animal hears perfectly well with the other ear.

The site has published a story-review from a site reader about her Dalmatian Cassandra (will open in a new tab).

Norwich Terrier

This is a good-natured, extremely active and quickly reacting to all events, a dog that does not show aggression towards people and pets.

It treats the beast in the hole decisively and fearlessly; when using the Norwich as a working dog, you can notice scars from fierce fights. These marks are not grounds for abandoning the pet's show career. You can buy a Norwich baby for an amount exceeding 50,000 rubles.

German Shepherd

The German Shepherd deservedly took bronze in the list of the smartest dogs in the world. Among all modern breeds, it is the closest relative of the wolf. Most often, shepherds worked as shepherds or carried out patrol duty.

It is interesting that when patrolling, the dog has to change its partner almost every day. Unlike many breeds that obey one owner, the German Shepherd will strictly follow the command of every policeman.

To raise an obedient and friendly pet, you need to train them from childhood. The German Shepherd is easy to train, has high intelligence and is very efficient. By nature, the “German” is non-aggressive, but if the owner is in danger, he will not hesitate to defend him.

The sniffer Trepp was accompanied by customs officer Leo in the Guinness Book of Records. The German Shepherd served at the airport customs for 9 years. During this time, Leo detained more than 300 drug dealers.

Appearance

The official description of the breed presents the Czech Terrier as a comfortable dog in every sense. These unusual, short-legged dogs are successfully trained to work, and their physique is only a plus for hunting in a hole. Short legs do not in any way affect the physical strength and anger of the Czech Terrier, therefore, if necessary, he is trained to work on the ground (badger, fox).

Visually, females are a little more refined and elongated than males, but this difference does not affect physical strength and strength. Males are distinguishable by their muzzle and look. The dimensions of dogs vary within the same limits regardless of gender:

Australian Shepherd (Aussie)

The birthplace of the Australian Cattle Dog, despite the name of the breed, is America. Each Aussie has an original color and is therefore considered unique. The breed is distinguished by its phenomenal abilities in grazing livestock in mountainous areas. Australian Shepherds easily tolerate pressure changes at altitude.

It is interesting that Aussies herd poultry and livestock only with the help of their piercing gaze, and never bite or use force. An Australian shepherd stands opposite an animal that has strayed from the herd, lowers its head and looks at it sternly - this is enough for the loner to return to his fellow tribesmen.

Aussies are very smart, sensitive and loyal, for them there is no better reward than the praise of their owner. Dogs love to play and walk for hours. Responsible and hardworking, “shepherdesses” can babysit a child or a cat all day long.

Among Australian shepherds, a dog named Strick distinguished himself. One day, an Aussie breeder fell to the bottom of a canyon on horseback. Streak ran for several hours without stopping to get to the nearest village and bring help. Subsequently, the Aussie hero became one of the main founders of the breed.

Pet beagles need to be constantly occupied with something. With a lack of attention and physical activity, they chew furniture, spoil things, and bark a lot. Due to their innate stubbornness and excessive independence, it is difficult to teach them basic commands. On the street, beagles get carried away by new smells and stop hearing their owner.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier gets along well with people and is a good companion. He is loyal, playful and brave. It is easy to train, but difficulties may arise due to its restlessness.

Great attention needs to be paid to caring for your Yorkie. Long-haired dogs need to be bathed every week, and short-haired dogs need to be bathed once every 2-3 weeks.

Yorkies do not shed, but require daily brushing. Afraid of cold and dampness, because... he has no undercoat, as a result of which he quickly becomes hypothermic.
