Grandin holistic dog food: reviews and composition analysis

Intelligence

The story of the dog food manufacturer is shrouded in mystery. It is produced at third-party factories in the Czech Republic and Germany; the owner of the brand does not own the production, however, he runs an animal nursery.

The Grandin company produces 7 types of dry food and 4 in canned form.

you can choose canned food for your dog

  • for adults - chicken, beef, lamb;
  • for the little one - turkey.

Dry food selection:

  • for small breeds - chicken, lamb, with 55% chicken meat, with 70% chicken;
  • for large breeds - chicken, lamb.

Complex Supplements

The mineral supplements in this product are complex, so we have included them in the ingredient list not in groups, but with each substance listed separately in case you want to know their detailed description. The total dosage of each mineral in Grandin Puppy Small is listed in the Guaranteed Analysis and Supplements section.

In general, for the high meat content (according to our system - more than 60% of the composition), we assign this food 5 bonus points, but due to the abundance of inconsistencies on the packaging and the presence of animal ingredients of unknown origin, the overall rating of the Grandin Puppy Small product is not so high, as I would like. Perhaps in the future the manufacturer will meet the wishes of responsible consumers, and the advantages of the food will outweigh its disadvantages.

Compound

First, let’s look at what Czech-made food consists of.

If you decide to buy food for small breeds, keep in mind that manufacturers often write “50% fresh chicken” on the packaging, however, if you carefully look at the composition, you will not find any data about chicken. Large inscriptions on the packaging are just advertising. The main component of chicken feed: poultry meat (50%) and liver (3%), poultry fat. This only means that it can contain not only chicken, but any other bird.

Let's look at the example of another food, Adult All Breeds with Lamb. It consists of: 20% lamb meat, 20% poultry meat, 3% hydrolyzed lamb liver. As you can see, it contains about 40% meat.

Grandin foods are not rich in ingredients, but they place a heavy emphasis on meat, which is the main source of protein, rather than soy or corn.

Advantages:

  • The source of protein is meat;
  • Sufficient amount of vitamins;
  • There are virtually no preservatives;
  • Price.

Flaws:

  • Rarely distributed in Russia. You can buy it in the 4 Paws online store;
  • The manufacturer does not always indicate what kind of meat is in the food.

Dog food: reviews

Dry and wet dog food of the Grandin brand have been sold on the pet supply market for a long time, so reviews about them are easy to find.

Veterinarians

Stanislav, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience, shared his opinion about Grandin food on the forum. According to him, the diet of this brand is firmly in the premium class, but a number of omissions from the manufacturer do not allow the doctor to say that the nutrition is as good as it says on the official website. This is part of the marketing strategy. We are talking primarily about the statement that the food is grain-free. This is not true, because instead of wheat, corn or other grains they contain rice. It is not dangerous for dogs, but it is not beneficial either. It is worth mentioning that the brand’s assortment does not include special diets or veterinary lines, unlike Grandorf and other brands. Otherwise, Grandin is a decent food for animals.

Dog breeders

Natalya writes a review of Grandin’s diet. She has a 1.3 year old German Shepherd. According to Natalya, earlier, when drawing up a nutrition plan for her pet, she gave preference to natural products and ingredients. But over time, she noticed that the dog was poorly digesting the food it received. It was decided to try dry food. After a long search, the choice settled on Grandin. Natalya notes the good composition of the product, rich in vitamins and animal proteins. “Grandin” suited her active and playful pet perfectly.

Olga is the owner of show and breeding dogs of different ages. She takes food selection seriously. Over the years, pets have tried different products, but now they have settled on Grandin. Olga makes sure that the dogs get all the necessary elements from their food and believes that “Grandin” is the best assistant in this. The main thing for her is a large percentage of meat contained, many vitamins, assortment, and good digestibility.

Julia faced a problem: her Chihuahua developed allergies. After much clarification, we realized that the dog had such reactions to food. The owner decided to switch her pet to dry food and chose Grandin. She bought a small package of 400 g to try. She notes that the lock on the package is strong, the size is convenient for a trial time and for travel. From day one, her dog enjoyed eating Grandin. The small size of the granules is convenient for a small dog. After 3 months, the allergy completely disappeared.

Grandin dog food is a balanced diet for pets that has mostly positive reviews. The price-quality ratio, composition, content of microelements and vitamins make it attractive to dog breeders.

conclusions

Due to the high meat content in the food, it can certainly be recommended to any dog breeder. However, the discrepancy between the information on the packaging and the composition is a little scary. Only the manufacturer knows what kind of meat this food is made from.

If you are not afraid of vague composition data, then you can safely take this food.

  • 0.4 kilograms of dry food will cost you 200 - 300 rubles,
  • for 1.5 kg. you will give 500 - 700 rubles,
  • for 3 kg. — 1,000 — 1,200 rub.

Canned food costs about 120 rubles. for 200 gr. and 160 rub. for 400 gr.

We award this dog food 4 stars.

Conclusions about Grandin food

Reviews about Grandin dry dog food are mostly positive, although in general there are still quite a few of them. The composition as a whole is quite good, so the Dai Paw website has no reason not to recommend this food - in terms of price/quality ratio it is quite a good choice.

Grandin dog food price

  • Dry food Grandin for dogs 0.4 kg - from 229 to 319 rubles;
  • Dry dog food Grandin 1.5 kg - from 550 to 799 rubles;
  • Dry dog food Grandin 3 kg - from 1099 to 1239 rubles;
  • Dry food Grandin for dogs 12 kg - from 3990 to 4290 rubles;

*The prices shown are current as of the end of January 2022 and may change significantly over time.

Grandin food base for sterilized cats

At first glance at the list of ingredients, it is immediately clear that the rule of indicating components in descending order has been violated. The first place is occupied by the complex combined under the name “meat ingredients”: “Meat ingredients (27.5% fresh chicken meat, 30.5% dried chicken meat, 6% dried turkey meat, 4% pork liver).” We are against such a free interpretation of the composition and believe that it is important that all ingredients are clearly indicated in descending order, in the appropriate places in the list.

In this case, the overall share of high-quality meat is quite decent (68%, that is, the composition of the Grandin food for castrated cats is confirmed by the large numbers on the front side of the package) and allows you to assign a bonus of 5 points to the food. This point should always be assessed biasedly, because in many other diets the volume of such complexes from various ingredients of animal origin is much less.

Instead of grain, potatoes (No. 2 on the list) and peas (No. 3) are added here - it’s a pity that their exact shares in the diet are not indicated. Beet pulp and chicken fat round out the top five.

Hello, I’ll tell you about our experience with Grandin Sterilized. Last year we adopted an older kitten, and, of course, like all kittens, he had a passion for everything smelly, and he had indigestion when it came to dry food. We tried a lot of things, and then the consultant recommended Grandin for kittens. We didn’t think twice about it, because the composition is the same as that of a well-known brand, and the price is much nicer. Anton was delighted, now he doesn’t eat anything except Grandina, even wet food and treats don’t interest him that much. The upsets also stopped, and the smell from going to the toilet became much less. The cat weighed 4.5 kg at 6 months, with a very lean physique. The cat has grown up healthy and beautiful, the hair does not fall out, there are no allergies, the stool is strong, and there is always an appetite. After castration, we switched without hesitation to Grandin for sterilized cats, tried different flavors, settled on beef, and have no complaints. I would like to thank the manufacturers for the convenient handle on the side of the ten-kilogram bag and the tight lock, thanks to which the smell does not disappear and the food remains fresh for a long time. We will continue to buy, I advise.

I would like to continue sharing reviews about pet food. I never try to skimp on the health and proper nutrition of my cat. After all, this is one of the most important members of the family and his illness will make all family members very worried. Therefore, I find the best. Here is one of our favorite foods. What is its charm? 1. Different price categories. It depends on the percentage of meat products in the composition. There are cheaper ones, there is 70% content, there are more expensive ones, there is 80% content. Manufacturers have made sure that everyone can feed their pet the right food; 2. Yummy. For our furbabies, this is the most important thing. There are completely different tastes that will suit even gourmets; 3. It contains a vitamin complex that helps the cat become stronger, stronger and more beautiful; 4. There are both large and small packages. This food caused only the best impressions and emotions, so I recommend it to everyone!

Flaws:

The cat gets fat on such a rich meat composition

We chose Grandin because the sterilized cat began to lose weight and lose hair on Royal Canin. After a week of feeding Grandin, the coat improved significantly, the cat became more well-fed, and looked healthier. But after a month, the cat had already gained 1 kg, although food was given strictly according to the scale; there was no other food in the house. Now I don’t know what to do, the tests are fine, which means the problem is in the food. Apparently, it doesn’t suit us, we need to look for something else.

Hi all!

I’ll tell you today about my experience of feeding my cat this food.

A little background: I wrote a review of 1-st Choice Adult Weight Control food six months ago and vowed not to experiment with my cat anymore in search of food, since the same 1-st Choice for sterilized cats with chicken and sweet potato suits her.

BUT it happened that for some reason this food began to disappear from stores. Previously, I freely ordered it on OZON, and it was also in only one store in our city, but only on order. After reading the information on the Internet, it became clear that some problems had arisen with the supply, and the manufacturer did not bring food to Russia. At this point, we had about a third of the pack left, and without hesitation, I realized that we needed to select new food. I went in search of the Four Paws store. I’ll say right away that I haven’t considered foods such as Hills, Royal Canin, ProPlan, their composition is not clear, the exact proportions of ingredients in the food are not indicated, although all veterinarians are promoting them, but I have a very skeptical attitude towards them, perhaps as times because of obvious imposition.

So, I saw exactly the culprit of my review, Grandin Sterilized food for sterilized cats aged 1 to 7 years, with chicken. The first thing I noticed, of course, was the composition, it’s sooooo good, full of advantages!

Ingredients: Meat ingredients (27.5% fresh chicken, 30.5% dried chicken, 6% dried turkey, 4% pork liver), potatoes, green peas, beet pulp, chicken fat, alfalfa 2.5%, apples, chicken eggs, beer yeast, inactivated yeast of the family Saccharomyces cerevisiae, flaxseed, black currant 1%, plant complex (nettle leaves, dandelion leaves 0.25%, chamomile flowers, lemon balm leaves, linden flowers), cold-pressed oil from Norwegian salmon, mineral substances, chicory root, milk thistle 0.1%, freshwater algae chlorella, Yucca Schidigera, complex of natural antioxidants for cell renewal

Agree, the composition is impressive. It’s clear that the manufacturer can write anything, it’s also written on the fence, but I want to believe that we are not being deceived.

The food is produced in the Czech Republic, and I also think it’s a big plus that the production date and expiration date are very clearly stated, because with Canadian food the devil will break his leg.

The packaging is also excellent, dense, wide zip closure, very tightly closed. The weight of 1.5 kg is just enough for a month for one cat, which will prevent the food from going rancid.

Now I’ll move on to the food itself. Appearance: not large brown cakes, a convenient size for gnawing, not particularly oily, there is no dust from the food in the package at all, nor are there any broken pieces. The smell, that’s what happened to it, it’s quite strange, pungent, I won’t say that it smells somehow disgusting, but not the usual smell of food. Although the manufacturer writes:

Fresh meat in the feed and the aroma of chicken fat provide increased palatability of the feed.

Which is something my cat personally could argue with.)))

I began to introduce it into the diet gradually, since the old food was still left, I first bought a small pack of 400 grams for testing. There were no problems with appetite, the cat ate it well in the mixture, she also felt great, and to my joy I already bought 1.5 kg.

The catch happened when we switched to a full diet. If earlier our daily food intake was 70 grams, then she started eating 50 grams at first, at that moment I was glad that the food was filling and she apparently didn’t need it anymore, but every day the portion became smaller, the cat came up to the bowl and sniffed began to actively bury this whole matter, making it clear. that she won’t eat it. I struggled with her for a week, almost hand-feeding her, but she never got an appetite; she only ate about 30 grams out of desperation. Personally, I'm guilty of the smell of food. After a week of ordeal I had to look for old food. Luckily I managed to do this.

I would like to note that after 2 months of eating, even though this food was mixed, she practically stopped shedding and her eyes, which sometimes flowed, were also clean. The stool was normal once a day and remained the same, but became better shaped. The activity is good. From this I conclude that the food is good, but something needs to be done about the smell. Seeing such improvements in appearance, I still don’t want to leave this food, I bought a second pack of 1.5 kg, but there was no appetite for it in its pure form.

I'm taking off a point because the cat doesn't really like it, otherwise I see only advantages. For now I’ll try to get by with mixing, but in the future I’ll probably have to look for something else.

I would rather recommend the food than not, judging by the reviews, not everyone had a refusal like we did.

I hope my review will be useful! Thanks for watching and have a nice day!

Description of additives in Grandin food

In addition to the already mentioned beet pulp, the feed contains other sources of fiber - alfalfa, apples. We have already talked about the main source of fatty acids - chicken fat, but there are other fats here: the oil contained in flax seeds, as well as cold-pressed oil from Norwegian salmon.

For the digestive system, it contains fairly traditional supplements - the fiber noted above, prebiotics (from brewer's yeast, chicory root), and yucca schidigera.

Images of black currant and chamomile are displayed on the front of the package. You can learn more about these and other additives in Grandin Cat Sterilized Chicken Grain Free in the descriptions of the relevant components in our reference database, but we urge you to pay attention first of all to the main components of the finished feed.

The list of ingredients also includes a complex of various medicinal herbs - however, their amount in the feed does not exceed 1%, and we strongly doubt that these components can have any beneficial effect on the animal’s body.

The manufacturer took care to indicate in detail the mineral and vitamin additives in 1 kg of feed. A positive point: most of the mineral compounds here are in the proteinate format - such complexes are absorbed by the body better than simple mineral salts.
