How to teach a Pekingese to go to the toilet in one place at home or outside

Good afternoon. In January of this year, I adopted a one-year-old Pekingese from foster care. It turned out that the breeder sold the puppy to Perm and he was returned to her, after which she placed him in good hands. The reason for the return turned out to be a birth defect: a bend in the tail and a crooked muzzle. But that turned out to be not all. Previously, he peed in a tray that was given to me to take with me. At home, at first he went to the litter box, but also peed on all the carpets and rugs in the apartment. I bought reusable diapers and covered everything. So he manages to go past the diaper and onto the mat. There’s a smell at home, I wash these diapers every day, the whole carpet on the balcony is stained, although everything is covered with diapers. What to do? He turned 2 years old in February and brought me no joy, only irritation. This is probably why his first owners from Perm returned him. My sister advised him to retrain him to go outside, but he just runs around and then does all the work at home. Help with advice, I will be very grateful.

Choosing a place

The owner himself needs to figure out whether the dog will go outside to relieve himself, to the litter box, or on orders. Little puppies love affection. It is not worth shouting, scolding, or hitting the tailed animal when relieving itself in the wrong place. Express dissatisfaction in a raised tone.

If you scold your four-legged friend, he can go anywhere out of fear. Praise the little one when the job is done in the right place. Having found the right approach to husky, you will see the result after 1-2 months. It is worth gaining strength, patience, perseverance.

Benefits of using diapers

Most often, home toilets are created for dwarf and small breeds of dogs - terriers, Pekingese, dachshunds, Maltese dogs, Spitz dogs. Using sanitary diapers certainly has a lot of advantages. First of all, this is the cleanliness of the home and the animal itself. The mats are safe and made from non-toxic materials.

When purchasing a puppy, you should ask the breeder if he has taught the dogs to go to the toilet in a diaper. If the answer is yes, you need to ask for a diaper that the puppies have already urinated on. A dog in a new home will find its toilet by finding the old bedding by the smell.

Depending on the size and manufacturer, the diaper can absorb up to 2-3 liters of liquid. Thanks to the absorbent substance, the animal’s urine is evenly distributed over the surface, while the upper hydrophobic layer remains dry. It is worth noting a number of other advantages of using diapers as a toilet for a puppy:

  • full compliance with quarantine during the dog’s vaccination;
  • no need to often walk the dog, which urinates very often during puppyhood;
  • the owner may not worry if he is late at work;
  • with an animal that is trained to urinate on a rug, there are no problems during long-term transportation of the animal, including during air travel;
  • you won’t have to walk the dog in cold weather or if the owner is ill;
  • Hygienic bedding can also be used when a bitch gives birth or in case of illness of the animal.

Things to do on the street

It is easier to accustom a puppy to doing things outside. The nature of the breed contributes to this. Clean friends don't shit in the place where they live. Not a single tailed cat relieves itself in a booth. If you are accustoming your baby to the street, get all his vaccinations.

Create a routine. Go outside at the same time every day. It is better to walk the tailed dog after sleep and food. The baby did it, praise him and give him a treat. Bring your pet into the house. Leave the long walk for later. Then the dog will associate the street with the “toilet”. The result will not take long to arrive.

How to care?

The main problem in caring for the Pekingese is its long coat, which constantly sheds. But we should not forget about the physiological characteristics of this breed, which oblige owners to take especially careful care of their eyes, skin, teeth and claws.

  1. Your pet's eyes should be examined daily. If foreign bodies are found on the cornea, they should be carefully removed with a damp cloth. The Pekingese's eyes are often injured due to their convex shape. Do not allow your dog to run around in bushes or thickets with thorny plants, and also limit contact with aggressive animals. If an eye is injured or falls out, you should immediately consult a veterinarian.
  2. The dog's ears are wiped with a special product that can be purchased at any veterinary pharmacy. When processing, it is better to use a soft cotton swab so as not to injure them.
  3. Dental examinations should be performed daily. To clean teeth from plaque and tartar, use ordinary soda or special dog toothpaste.
  4. As they grow, the claws are carefully cut off with a nail clipper. It is important not to touch a blood vessel, otherwise severe bleeding may occur. Daily walks ensure natural gradual grinding of the claws.
  5. The Pekingese's coat is very long and thick. First of all, the dog must be brushed regularly, daily during the shedding period. It is better to entrust the Pekingese haircut to professional groomers. Your pet should not be bathed too often; once every six months is enough. Every day you need to wipe the folds on the dog’s body with a damp cloth.

Toilet training a Pekingese

After installing the trays, place the diaper in it. Keep an eye on your pet. If he starts to fuss, put him in a “box”. It may not work out the first time. The dog cannot understand your actions so quickly, and most likely will relieve itself outside the tray. Blot the puddle with a diaper and put it back. Treat the puddle with antigasin spray so that the puppy does not smell itself.

Don't scold your baby. Keep track of how long it takes to cope. Sit down after every feeding, sleep, walk. The toilet drawer should be washed with laundry soap. As time passes, the Pekingese will understand what a tray is and what it is intended for.

Trays for dogs

Currently, pet stores offer a large selection of all kinds of trays. A tray is a tray on the bottom of which an absorbent fabric is placed, with a mesh on top of it.

Thanks to which, the puppy’s paws remain clean. Often trays are sold with a set of specially designed diapers.

Inside, these diapers consist of special fillers, thanks to which the smell does not spread throughout the house.

These containers have an entrance, so even the tiniest baby, like a larger dog, can use it comfortably.

It is worth noting that trays for boys differ in design.

A special column is installed on them so that the male can feel like a man.

There are different sizes of litter trays for dogs. When space in the apartment allows, buy a larger toilet.

Regardless of whether you managed to train your pet to the litter box or not, you should not refuse to walk outside. Frequent walks are necessary for a dog at any age. They will help keep your puppy healthy.

Bathing the Pekingese, brushing teeth and trimming nails

You should not wash your Pekingese dog often; once or twice a year is best. More often you can only wash your paws and private parts. If the dog gets dirty somewhere, it is best to use dry shampoos.

The shine and cleanliness of a dog's fur will be given by wiping it with a special solution: mix vinegar, vodka and water in equal proportions and then, after wetting a napkin, gently rub it in the direction of hair growth, and then against the growth.

But you should trim your nails regularly, especially if your pet lives only in an apartment. If claws that are too long are not trimmed, it will be difficult for the dog to walk, or it may get injured if the claw gets caught, for example, in the pile on the carpet.

To trim your nails yourself, buy a special nail clipper. And if you are very scared to take on a haircut, then the easiest way is to go to a special grooming salon - they will do a dog manicure quickly and efficiently.

Dog teeth can also be cleaned in a specialized salon, and if you want to do it yourself, then buy a small toothbrush and special toothpaste. Your Pekingese should brush his teeth every day.

Possible problems and their solutions

Despite the fact that in theory everything seems simple, in practice the owner may encounter a number of problems. But there are solutions for everything:

Perhaps he is still too small and simply does not have time to run, so he pees past the diaper. This is due to the fact that they cannot restrain themselves for up to four months. This is equivalent to trying to teach a six-month-old child to ask for a potty without fail. In later life, the problem may be due to the fact that the diaper is dirty, has an unusual smell, or is distracting.

  • The puppy stopped wearing a diaper.

The reasons are the same as for periodic errors. You shouldn’t get angry at the puppy and think that he is doing this out of spite. Dogs have no such concept as “specifically, to take revenge.” For them, defecation and urination are completely normal physiological processes that do not cause disgust. Remember, a dog can happily eat his own or someone else’s poop and not wince. People are disgusted by this.

What you perceive as a feeling of guilt is flattened ears, a closed posture, eyes on the floor, not an admission of guilt, but fear. Training can be stalled if you punish the puppy for not going to the diaper. What to do in such a situation? You need to exhale deeply, drink a mug of chamomile tea, collect your thoughts and realize that the puppy did not do it on purpose. Make a rollback in your actions and start teaching from the very beginning: wearing a diaper, praising for successes and ignoring mistakes.

If the puppy poops past the diaper, then you should use an antigasin. You must also remember that soon the dog will grow up, and nature dictates that it does not shit in its den, which your home has become for it.

This is a very common problem for owners. Babies explore the world with the help of their mouths, bite and gnaw on everything, this is especially acute during the change of teeth. First of all, provide the puppy with other objects that can be tasted: balls, ropes, squeakers. Don't forget to spend enough time playing with your baby and just communicating.

There is enough attention and toys, but the puppy still eats diapers. What to do in such a situation is not always clear. And you can’t do without a diaper, and there is a risk that the pet will swallow a piece, which can cause intestinal obstruction or vomiting. In this case, it is worth replacing disposable diapers with reusable ones and using a special anti-gnaw spray.

Which diapers to choose

When choosing a diaper for your pet for the first time, it’s not difficult to get confused. Manufacturers produce many types of rugs, which differ in size and material, degree of moisture absorption and softness, as well as duration of use.

You can not only put diapers on the floor, but also cover a special tray with them. Often dog breeders start training with one diaper, and later purchase a special tray.

It is worth noting that the rugs are made in such a way that they not only absorb dog urine, but also prevent the smell of feces from spreading throughout the apartment. In addition, they have an anti-slip or sticky back, so they can be laid on any surface.

Mats with a plant scent have been specially developed for puppies, which helps the baby master the skill of walking in a diaper. Depending on the period of use, sanitary diapers are divided into:

  • Disposable mats are the most budget-friendly option; they are made from cellulose or Bio-eslon material. The hygiene product has several layers - fabric, filler, membrane, synthetic fiber. Rugs are intended for one-time use, after which they are thrown away. Ten diapers will cost the owner approximately 250 rubles.

  • Reusable diapers are much more expensive, but they can be used throughout the whole year. Reusable mats are available in various colors and are characterized by excellent durability, which is why dogs cannot chew them. The rugs have a high absorbent property, which eliminates the possibility of leakage, while the pet’s paws remain dry and he does not spread his feces around the house. The top layer of the rug is most often made of a natural base, and the bottom layer is always made of waterproof material.

The cost of one reusable mat ranges from 320 to 1650 rubles. The difference in price is due to the size and composition of the product, in particular the additional antibacterial layer or adhesive surface that is attached to the floor. The most budget-friendly options are produced by Chinese manufacturers, Russian hygiene products belong to the middle price category, and European brands are considered the most expensive. The diaper is washed approximately once every 2-3 days. The mat dries very quickly.

It is better to wash a reusable hygiene product by hand using a disinfectant.

Common mistakes

  • Strictly punish the puppy, instill in him a fear of his owner. A frightened animal learns worse.
  • Beat the animal for puddles and heaps discovered after a while. In particularly advanced cases, such behavior of the owner leads to coprophagia - eating one's own excrement. It is very difficult to wean a dog from this.
  • Select the wrong size tray, without taking into account physiological needs, too tight. An adult male dog will need a tray with a post.
  • Do not keep the tray clean.
  • It is inconsistent to punish a dog by “closing your eyes” every other time.
  • Ignore praise.
  • Forget about constant training. Even an adult, accustomed individual sometimes presents a surprise. Plus, dogs can forget where their toilet is if you don't spend enough time with the animal.
