Milbemax tablets for medium and large dogs from 5 to 25 kg, pack. 2 tab.

Description and release form

The production of the medicine is carried out by a corporation registered in France – Novartis. The product is produced under the supervision of the veterinary company elanco. Milbemax is widespread not only in Russia, but also abroad.

There are two types of product: for dogs of medium (up to twenty-five kg) and large sizes, and also for puppies and small breeds. There is also an option in the form of chewing plates.

  1. Regular Mibelmax tablets have a snow-white round shape with a smooth notch in the middle (to make it convenient to break the tablet in two). One pack contains two tablets.
  2. Chewable Milbemax is produced in the form of four chewable coffee-colored strips.

It is important to choose the right medications for your pet, otherwise there is a risk of overdose. The option for large dogs has a much larger number of active ingredients. Below is a mini-tablet showing the relationship between the size of the dog and the number of tablets.

The drug contains: milbemycin oxime (hereinafter abbreviated) (2.5 mg and 12.5 mg for small and large dogs, respectively) and praziquantel (25 and 125 mg, depending on the type of tablet). In addition to the basic components, the contents contain the following preservatives: E171 and iron oxide.

The chewing version is identical in basic composition, only the production technology changes. A number of additional components are noted: Glycerol, Propylene Glycol, brown iron oxide, butylated hydroxyanisole (E320), propyl gallate (E310), pregelatinized starch, natural chicken flavor, powdered sugar, Sodium chloride, citric acid monohydrate.

Important! The shelf life of all types of tablets is 2 years from the date of production. It is prohibited to use medicine that has expired.

The storage conditions for the medicine box are the same as for many similar ones: in a dark, dry place, protected from sunlight, away from children and food.

Analogues of the drug

Analogs can be selected from similar drugs listed in the table below. All of them are similar to Milbemax in the presence of praziquantel. The difference is in the content of the second active substance.

NameWhat is the differenceaverage cost
HelmimaxThe best analogue based on moxidectin. It is superior to Milbemax in terms of safety. Available for adult dogs and puppies in 3 forms: for small, medium and large breeds. 330-420 rub. depending on the type

Dehinel PlusHelps against more worms due to the simultaneous presence of febantel, pyrantel and praziquantel. It has a variety of dosages by weight, making it easier to choose the right form for large breeds. 240 rub.

Pharmacological (biological) properties

Milbemycinoxim not only has anthelmintic properties, in addition it has an effect on insects and ticks. Acts against nematodes living in the gastrointestinal tract of the animal. The highest concentration of Milb in a dog's plasma accumulates within 2-3 hours. Most often it is excreted unchanged in feces.

The second active ingredient is praziquantelum. It has pronounced anthelmintic properties. Increases the permeability of the membranes of worm cells for calcium ions, causing centralized contraction of the muscles of the helminth, which leads to permanent paralysis, which actually kills the helminth. The highest concentration of the substance in plasma is achieved from one to three hours. It is excreted by the kidneys (eighty percent) and a small part is excreted in the feces.

According to its composition, this medicine can be classified as moderately dangerous.

How Milbemax works

Milbemax, a deworming medicine for dogs, not only leads to the death of parasites, but also enhances the activity of the animal’s enzyme systems, which helps to obtain an anthelmintic effect in a short time. Entering the pet’s body, milbemycin increases the polarity of the parasite’s cell membranes in the nervous and muscle tissues and enhances the penetration of chlorine through them. This leads to paralysis and subsequent death of the helminth.

Praziquantel also disrupts the polarity of cell membranes, increasing their permeability to calcium. As a result, the muscles of the worms contract, and the outer layer of cells covering the body of the worm is destroyed.

Milbemax belongs to hazard class 3 (moderate); If the dosage is observed, the drug does not pose a threat to the health of the animal.

How to identify worms in a dog

The first and most important sign of the presence of parasites is noticeable weight loss. In this case, the animal may eat even more than usual. Symptoms of anemia appear, the coat loses its appearance, all signs of vitamin deficiency are evident. From the gastrointestinal tract - vomiting, diarrhea and constipation often alternate.

If you examine your pet's stool, you can see parasites in it with the naked eye.

Be especially vigilant as adult dogs do not show symptoms as often as puppies or teenagers.

Analogues of Milbemax

There are many anthelmintics. Since the action of Milbemax is highly effective and safe, and the price will be noticeable, because prevention must be carried out regularly, they are beginning to look for analogues of the drug, both domestic and foreign.

  • Drontal plus (Bayer): a product with low toxicity with a cost in the range of 160-360 rubles per pack;
  • Cestal Plus (CEVA) is sold individually or in packs of 10 tablets. One tablet will cost 95-100 rubles;
  • Febtal combo is sold as a suspension for small dogs or puppies. One drug costs 75-85 rubles;
  • Kanikquantel is a drug in the form of a gel, which is convenient for your pet to take. The packaging is purchased for 350-360 rubles. Contraindications include pregnancy of the bitch;
  • Milprazone is sold in a pack of 2 tablets at a price of 280-320 rubles;
  • Trontil costs 250-260 rubles per pack of 6 tablets;
  • Pratel is the most inexpensive, 1 tablet costs 55-65 rubles. It is better to purchase the entire package in 100 tablets, which is undoubtedly more profitable;
  • Dosalid (Pfizer) is also inexpensive and effective against nematodes and cestodes. Price 45-55 rubles per piece.

Breeders reviews

Irina:

“We take it according to the advice of the veterinarian. Giving the tablets is simple: I crushed them into powder and mixed them with food, the dog ate them. There were no side effects, we are happy with the purchase, if something happens, we turn to Milbemax.”

Tatiana:

“Every year we give our Charlie Milbemax before vaccinations. He does not eat the tablet in its pure form, apparently it is too bitter. After several uses there were no side effects.”

Artem:

“A couple of years ago we got a German Shepherd puppy. The first thing we did was take the new family member to the veterinarian. The baby turned out to be completely healthy, without any abnormalities. Since there are small children in the house, the doctor advised sometimes to prevent worms using Mibelmax. We use it this way: I put the tablet inside the fruit, the dog absorbs it without whims. There were no side effects; the only drawback of the drug was the price. But, for the sake of your pet’s health, you can fork out more.”

Milbemax - for the prevention and treatment of helminthiases in medium and large dogs

INSTRUCTIONS

on the use of Milbemax tablets for dogs for nematodes and cestodes

COMPOSITION AND FORM OF RELEASE

Milbemax tablets for dogs contain milbemycin oxime and praziquantel as active ingredients. The drug is produced in two modifications: “Milbemax tablets for puppies and small dogs” containing in one tablet milbemycin oxime - 2.5 mg, praziquantel - 25 mg and "Milbemax tablets for large dogs" containing milbemycin oxime - 12.5 mg and praziquantel - 125 mg/tablet.

As auxiliary components, "Milbemax tablets for dogs" contain: microcrystalline cellulose - 20%, croscarmellose sodium - 3%, povidone - 1.5%, lactose monohydrate - 51.5%, colloidal silicon and magnesium stearate - 2%.

In appearance, the drug is a white, elongated tablet with beveled edges and a transverse notch on one side. They are released packaged in 2 tablets in foil blisters, which are packed in cardboard boxes.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Milbemax tablets for dogs are a combined anthelmintic drug with nematodocidal and cestodocidal action.

Milbemycin oxime, which is part of the drug, belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones released as a result of the enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopkus var. aureolacrimosus, is active against larvae and adults of nematodes parasitizing the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, as well as larvae of the nematode Dirofilaria immitis. The mechanism of action of milbemycin is due to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes to chlorine ions (CI), which leads to overpolarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle tissue cells, paralysis and death of the parasite. The maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in the blood plasma of dogs is achieved within 2-4 hours, bioavailability is about 80%. The compound is excreted from the body mainly unchanged. Praziquantel is an acylated derivative of pyrazine isoquinoline and has a pronounced effect against cestodes and nematodes. By increasing the permeability of the parasite's cell membranes to calcium ions (Ca2+), it causes depolarization of the membranes, muscle contraction and destruction of the tegument, which leads to the death of the parasite and promotes its elimination from the animal's body. The maximum concentration of praziquantel in the blood plasma of dogs is achieved after 1-4 hours. The compound undergoes rapid and almost complete biotransformation in the liver. The level of binding in plasma is about 80%, and is excreted from the body within 2 days, mainly in the urine.

Milbemax tablets for dogs, in terms of the degree of impact on the body, are classified as moderately hazardous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76), in recommended doses they do not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic or teratogenic effect, and are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.

INDICATIONS

Milbemax tablets for dogs are prescribed for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes for nematodes, cestodes and mixed nematodo-cestodes infestations caused by the following types of helminths: cestodes - Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinocaus multilocularis, Mesocestoides spp.; nematodes - Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis, Renosoma vulpis (reduces the intensity of infection), Angiostrongylus vasorum (reduces the intensity of infection), Dirofilaria immitis (for preventive purposes).

DOSES AND METHOD OF APPLICATION

Milbemax tablets for dogs are used once during feeding in crushed form with a small amount of food or administered forcibly to the root of the tongue after feeding in a minimum therapeutic dose of 0.5 mg of milbemycin oxime + 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight, based on:

Animal weightMilbemax tablets for puppies and small dogs
from 0.5 to 1 kg1\2 tablets (half a tablet);
from 1 to 5 kg1 tablet
from 5 to 10 kg2 tablets
Milbemax tablets for large and medium dogs
from 5 to 10 kg1 tablet
from 10 to 25 kg1 tablet
from 25 to 5 kg2 tablets
from 50 to 75 kg3 tablets

For deworming of dogs with infestation caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum, Milbemax tablets are used in the same dose four times with an interval of 7 days. A preliminary starvation diet and the use of laxatives before deworming are not required.

In order to prevent dirofilariasis in regions unfavorable for the disease, the drug is used in the spring-summer-autumn period: before the start of the flight of mosquitoes and mosquitoes (carriers of the pathogen D. immitis) once, then once a month and the last time in the season no earlier than 1 month after the end of insect flight. Before deworming, you should consult a veterinarian to rule out the presence of microfilariae in the animal’s blood.

With significant overdose, some dogs may experience depression, drooling, muscle paresis, tremors and/or uneven gait. These symptoms resolve spontaneously within 24 hours and do not require the use of medications.

SIDE EFFECTS

When using the drug in accordance with these instructions, side effects and complications, as a rule, are not observed. In some dogs, with increased species or individual sensitivity to the components of the drug, allergic reactions may develop; in these cases, the animal is prescribed desensitizing agents.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug (including a history) and severe impairment of kidney and liver function.

Animals that are exhausted or sick with infectious diseases are not subject to deworming. “Milbemax tablets for puppies and small dogs” should not be used for puppies under 2 weeks of age and weighing less than 0.5 kg, “Milbemax tablets for medium and large dogs” - for dogs weighing less than 5 kg. The use of the drug is not recommended for Collie, Bobtail and Sheltie puppies, due to the increased sensitivity of dogs of these breeds to macrocyclic lactones. Milbemax tablets for dogs are used for pregnant and lactating bitches under the supervision of a veterinarian.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

No specific effects of the drug upon its first use and discontinuation were identified.

Milbemax tablets for dogs should not be used in combination with other macrocyclic lactones.

Reviews from veterinarians

Ekaterina Andreeva:

“When people come with complaints about helminths in a dog or cat, I most often recommend Milbemax. The drug is good, does not contain unnecessary components. Allergies occur very rarely. In my practice, there were no special complaints about side effects.”

Sergey Viktorovich:

“The most advantageous drug compared to analogues is milbemax. Quite potent and does not contain any hazardous components to the health of the animal. Milbemax acts on the entire body of the helminth, destroying it from the inside, without poisoning the dog itself. Many owners do not give due importance to the problem of worms in dogs. They try to cure the unfortunate animal with mythical folk remedies, mistakenly believing that this will help. It is very important to choose a safe medicine for your animal in a timely manner. Otherwise, irreversible consequences may occur, including death.”

conclusions

Milbemax for dogs is one of the best anthelmintics. In my practice, I have rarely encountered side effects after taking this medication, and all of them were associated with the individual characteristics of the animal: diseases, hypersensitivity, etc.

But Milbemax is not unique. It has worthy analogues. It can be replaced with Milprazone - the composition and dosages of both drugs are identical, but the cost differs significantly.

"Gelmimax" and "Kaniquantel" are considered safer - they extremely rarely lead to complications. But if you have a collie or a related breed, take “Febtal” (only the regular one, not “Combo”), “Troncil” or “Dehinel Plus”.

Analogs

  • Of the tablet anthelmintics, Profender can be distinguished.
  • For puppies, there is a medicine in the form of a paste - Dirofen.
  • You can also try suspensions - febtal combo, prazicide.

In addition to medications, there are folk remedies for parasites. However, do not rush to give up all medications and poison the animal with unknown herbs. Before treatment with traditional medicine, carefully read the properties of certain plants, whether they will be harmful, whether they will cause allergies, etc.

What you can give to your pet:

  • Carrot. Yes, yes, the most common and widely consumed product. When the carrot pieces pass through the intestinal wall, they remove the wall bugs. You can add it to porridge or give it just like that.
  • Hulled pumpkin seeds in small quantities. Pumpkin seeds are not only effective anti-parasitic prevention, but also a good source of vitamins. The main thing is not to overdo it with the quantity, as too many seeds will be harmful.

You cannot give:

  • It is highly undesirable to give garlic to dogs. Contrary to popular belief, it is ineffective against reptiles in the animal’s body. Instead, garlic can cause serious complications such as gastritis. There are different variations of pseudo-medicine that will only harm the dog. Some people suggest giving your animal vodka against parasites (even a puppy!).

Always think for yourself and take care of your pet’s health; you cannot save money on this.

Composition and action

A dog can become infected with helminths at any time of the year. Even those animals that spend almost all their time at home and do not have contact with street animals require regular preventative care. Thanks to the active complex action of Milbemax, you can quickly get rid of parasites.

Main components of the drug:

  • praziquantel;
  • Milbemycin oxime.

The combination of two active ingredients is not accidental: praziquantel is active against tapeworms, milbemycin oxime is active against roundworms. One treatment is enough to destroy all types of intestinal parasites and prevent helminthic infestation.

Action of praziquantel

This component of Milbemax is active against tapeworms. This is the most dangerous type of intestinal parasite. They do not have a respiratory system, and glycolysis produces a large amount of toxic products. This causes severe intoxication of the animal’s body, which can lead to dangerous consequences:

  • cerebral edema;
  • renal failure;
  • liver dysfunction.

Praziquantel, entering the animal's intestines, disrupts the permeability of the cell membranes of parasites, which causes their paralysis and death. The substance is part of drugs used for the prevention and treatment of cestodiases (tenidosis, echinococcosis, dipylidiasis, diphyllobothriasis, etc.) in domestic animals.

It is impossible for the owner to cope with advanced cases of infestation on his own: the help of a qualified veterinarian will be required.

Tapeworms (tapeworms) have a high reproductive capacity. Every day, segments with a large number of eggs separate from the body, and new ones grow in their place. Not all anthelmintic drugs can cope with such parasites: if the worm is not killed, then after 2-3 weeks its body is completely restored. Therefore, in case of severe infection, one treatment is not enough: to completely get rid of helminths, a second treatment is carried out.

Different types of tapeworms can parasitize a dog’s intestines:

EchinococcusWorms up to 0.5 cm long. Dangerous for humans: you can become infected even by simply petting a dog that has cestodes. Penetrating into the bloodstream, the parasite settles on the liver, diaphragm, and an echinococcal vesicle is formed, which can reach a weight of 12 kg. You can suspect echinococcosis in a pet if the dog “rides on its butt”;
Cucumber tapewormsDipylidium. The pathogen is carried by fleas and lice eaters: helminth eggs enter the dog’s body when it bites the fleas. The parasite can reach half a meter in length and 3 mm in width. At the initial stage, the symptoms are invisible, multiplying in the body, they can impede the passage of food through the intestines and cause dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract. Dipilidiosis is manifested by severe seizures, as in epilepsy, refusal to eat, decreased immunity;
Wide tapewormDiphyllobothrium. It enters the animal's body when eating raw fish, and can reach a length of up to 10 meters and a width of up to 1.5 cm. A dog with diphyllobothriasis develops hypovitaminosis and pernicious anemia. Characteristic symptoms of infection are perversion of appetite, behavioral signs are depression or overexcitement.

Action of milbemycym oxime

The substance successfully copes with the destruction of roundworms - the most common type of helminths parasitizing in the intestines of dogs. Most often, eggs and larvae of parasites enter the pet’s body in the following ways:

  • nutritional – through food or water contaminated with worm eggs;
  • with mother's milk;
  • intrauterine route;
  • through the skin of the paw pads.

Important! It is extremely dangerous if a pregnant female has worms. They easily cross the placental barrier and enter the fetal body. With severe invasion, the development of congenital pathologies or intrauterine death of the fetus (or the entire litter) is possible.

If your pet has worms, the following symptoms are possible:

  • indigestion (constipation, diarrhea, alternating them with each other);
  • change in taste habits;
  • vomiting (a dangerous sign of intoxication, which indicates a large presence of parasites in the body). Sometimes whole balls of worms come out with the vomit;
  • deterioration of the condition of the coat and skin: all the necessary microelements and vitamins are taken by parasites);
  • exhaustion.

In the pulmonary form of helminthic infestation (when worms enter the lungs), a cough occurs: it intensifies at night. Due to the fact that the same cough is characteristic of a common cold, the owner may not immediately suspect the presence of worms in the pet’s body.

Important! Worms are also dangerous because during migration the larvae carry pathogenic bacteria. Elderly and young animals, whose immunity cannot cope with attacks from foreign agents, are at greatest risk: their respiratory system is affected, which manifests itself in severe bronchitis, pneumonia, etc.

Due to the presence of milbemycym oxime in Milbemax, the drug actively destroys parasitic nematodes. After 30-60 minutes, the maximum concentration of active substances in the blood plasma is reached, and the medicine begins to have a therapeutic effect.

FAQ

The questions are answered by a veterinarian, one of our authors - Elena Starodubova

Is the drug dangerous for pets' health?

Milbemax is safe if used according to instructions. It should not be administered to animals weighing less than 0.5 kg. (dogs can reach 2 weeks, kittens from 6 weeks).

Milbemax can harm a pet if its kidneys and liver function are impaired, as well as in case of individual intolerance to the components of the drug (active ingredients: milbemycin oxime and praziquantel), especially for bobtail, collie and sheltie breeds (they often have increased sensitivity to macrocyclic lactones , which is milbemycin oxime).

Drontal or Milbemax - which is better?

Milbemax is active against nematodes and cestodes (round and flatworms), and drontal, in addition to activity against nematodes and cestodes, also acts on the simplest organisms - Giardia (giardiasis is a fairly common infection that is contagious to humans).

Milprazone or Milbemax - which is better?

Milprazone is an analogue of Milbemax, containing the same active ingredients in the same quantities.

How to take the drug before vaccination?

If the animal is healthy and deworming is carried out for prevention, then the tablet can be given a week before vaccination. It is worth treating fleas 4 - 5 days before deworming.

If treatment for worms is carried out for therapeutic purposes, it is necessary to give the drug twice with an interval of 7 days, and vaccinate at least 2 weeks after the last tablet, when the dog is completely healthy.

What can replace the product: analogues

If you couldn’t buy Milbemax or your pet is allergic to its components, you can use other drugs to get rid of worms. The most common analogues of Milbemax:

  • Drontal plus;
  • Kanikquantel;
  • Cestal plus;
  • Pratel;
  • Milprazone;
  • Febtal combo;
  • Trontsil.

In general, judging by user reviews, Milbemax does not cause any reactions from the dog’s body and is well tolerated. The medicine is freely sold in veterinary pharmacies, including via the Internet and in clinics, and the average price of the drug is about 300 rubles.

Briefly about the main thing

  1. Milbemax is one of the most effective antiparasitic drugs for animals.
  2. There are two types of tablets: regular and chewable.
  3. Do not confuse the dosage, and the treatment will proceed without negative consequences.
