Teaching a puppy to go to the toilet in the right place is quite difficult. This requires time and patience. First you need to decide on a place for the toilet, and then start studying. Track where the puppy relieves itself and place a diaper or tray there. If this location does not suit you, gradually move the tray in the desired direction, but no more than 3-4 cm per week.

Once you have a Chinese Crested puppy, remove the rugs for a while to prevent the dog from choosing them instead of the litter box.

Choose a place for the diaper. Constantly monitor the puppy to catch the moment when he wants to go to the toilet. It’s easy to understand: the puppy is fussing, spinning, sniffing. You need to catch the puppy and put him in a diaper. If he does his job in the right place, he needs to be praised and given a treat. As a rule, the puppy wants to go to the toilet more often after sleeping and eating. But he still can’t stand it until 5-6 months, so small embarrassments in the form of a puddle on the floor will still happen. At this moment, there is no need to scold the puppy, just take the diaper, dip it in the puddle and let the dog sniff. And then treat the crime scene well so that there is no smell left.
If it doesn’t work with one diaper, place several diapers at once in all the places where the puppy poops. And gradually remove them one by one. This will make it easier for the puppy to learn to go to the toilet in only one place.
If unsuccessful, you can leave the puppy in a special enclosure. Place the puppy's bed and diaper in it. When the baby gets used to wearing a diaper, the enclosure can be removed.

The peculiarity of the coat of the Powder Puff dog is that it consists of outer coat; it has no undercoat. As a result, there are no seasonal molts.

The baby's height at the withers barely reaches 20-30 centimeters and weighs from 2 to 6 kilograms. Bitches have finer bones than males and are smaller and more graceful. Any coat color is acceptable as standard.

The lack of hair in this breed is the result of a mutation. Both subspecies have genes responsible for fluffiness. A hairless baby can give birth to puppies with soft fur, and vice versa, a powder puff can give birth to hairless babies. Both puppies are born in the same litter.

History of the breed

There is no consensus as to where Chinese Crested dogs first appeared. For a long time it was believed that they came from Africa, from where they were taken by Chinese sailors.

Currently, researchers are increasingly inclined to the hypothesis that their homeland is Central America. At excavations in Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula, the remains of a dog were discovered that date back more than 3,500 years. Anatomically, the found skeleton is very similar in structure to the skeleton of modern Chinese crested dogs.

There is a third version that this dog breed originated in China.

But there is no doubt about one thing - although merchants and sailors contributed to the spread of dogs of this breed throughout the world, Chinese crested dogs acquired the greatest love among the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom. True, only wealthy people could afford to have a pet like the Pekingese.

Historically, by the 60s of the last century, the breed was on the verge of extinction. But thanks to the work of dog handlers from the UK and the USA, the number of Chinese crested dogs has been restored. In 1966, the official breed standard was published. And in 1987, the breed was recognized by the International Canine Association.

The special quality of the Powder Puff coat is explained primarily by the small amount of undercoat, and the dominant grooming hair in a healthy state, according to connoisseurs of the breed, resembles a veil: it is long, delicate and silky. You shouldn’t give up using them completely - it’s not only beautiful, but also very convenient. Choose jewelry that will definitely not stretch the wool, thereby damaging it. a massage brush is an essential item. It is indispensable for daily combing, drying hair after washing and final grooming before entering the ring; a mitten brush is also convenient;
good scissors - simple and thinning - are valuable assistants in trimming the tips of the hair on the paws, tail, ears and in thinning the fur where necessary;

Bathing

The usual recommendation for many other dog breeds: the less often we bathe, the better - in our case it does not work. The Chinese puff needs to be washed frequently - about once a week. Therefore, stock up on special equipment - cosmetics for your pet:

light oil for long-haired dogs;
products for untangling tangles and for styling.

You will need a lot of all this - beauty requires money. And saving money by buying dubious products at a cheaper price is very risky - you can irrevocably ruin the luxurious fur, and then you will have to shave the hairless crested one from the downy one. A little secret from professional groomers: the coat should be perfectly combed before each bath. And you need to comb it not in a dry, but in a slightly moistened state - both special “unraveling” sprays and ordinary water are suitable for this, but it must be soft and filtered.

How to properly bathe a puff? To do this, you need to follow a certain sequence of actions:

Dilute shampoo or shampoo concentrate according to the instructions in warm water (usually the ratio of detergent to water is 1:4) and beat the solution into a strong foam.
Place the animal in the bathtub, at the bottom of which it is advisable to place a silicone mat or just a terry towel so that your baby’s paws do not slip.
Thoroughly wet the fur with warm water from the shower along its entire length, from the skin to the tips - this is an important step, treat it responsibly.
Apply pre-prepared washing foam to the wet coat using a sponge or just with your hands - you need to start soaping from the tail and hind legs, gradually moving towards the head, washing the head last.
Lightly massage the soaped skin and very carefully distribute the shampoo over the coat, never stretching it.
Rinse off the foam with plenty of running water, working in reverse order, from the head to the hind legs.
It is better to do the last rinse with cool (but not very cold!) water - this helps close the cuticles of the hairs.
Using your palms, lightly squeeze out excess water and immediately apply a nourishing balm to the coat - this will improve the quality of the top coat hair and reduce tangling.
Leave the balm on the fur for the time specified according to the instructions (most often it is about two minutes) and rinse very thoroughly with a shower.
Dry the coat a little (not completely), and then spray it with styling product, if necessary, then carefully comb the dog.

You should massage your dog’s skin not only when lathering, but also during the period of action of the balm - this way you will not only enhance its effect, but also caress your pet and prevent it from getting hypothermic.

How to dry wool correctly

After bathing and gently squeezing out the fur, the baby is wrapped well - a soft terry towel of sufficient size or a special diaper for bathing dogs will do.

A powerful compressor is usually not used for dogs of this breed - it, of course, greatly speeds up the drying process, but is too large and strong for a baby powder poof. It is better to dry it with a regular hairdryer, but not in hot mode. Although the most gentle option is, of course, natural drying in the open air.

Chinese Cresteds, unfortunately, are often sickly; they must certainly be protected from hypothermia and drafts, especially during the cold season. Make sure that the room in which the dog is located after bathing is warm and not drafty.
