The Chihuahua is a small dog with a doll-like appearance originally from Mexico, which seems to have been specially bred to be dressed up in bright costumes, groomed and pampered.
And, indeed, many owners of these animals do not spare any money to make their pet look glamorous and stylish.
And on the street, especially in the cool season, you can see Chihuahuas dressed in multi-colored overalls, sweaters and blankets.
But what is clothing for a Chihuahua: a whim of the owner or a necessary care item?
And what kind of wardrobe should such a dog have?
Do you need clothes?
Chihuahua dogs are very small in size , both girls and boys, and due to their accelerated metabolism they can freeze even in cool or too windy weather .
And rain, even if warm, will not do any good to a pet of this breed: the dog can simply get sick if it gets too wet. For such weather conditions, you can purchase a raincoat.
In the summer heat, a Chihuahua can overheat and get heatstroke or sunstroke, and therefore it will also benefit from clothes designed for hot weather. And even if the room suddenly becomes cool, the dog will need a blanket or sweater.
As with most dwarf dog breeds, clothing for a Chihuahua is not a luxury or a whim, but an essential necessity (shown in the photo).
Sewing instructions
It should be noted that models for boys and girls differ according to their anatomical features: in girls with small breasts, the stomach is completely closed, in boys it is open up to the beginning of the chest. This allows girls to keep warm and boys not to get their clothes dirty.
For male dogs, a large pant leg width is designed to allow unhindered lifting of the paw. It is better to place zippers and fasteners on the back, this makes it easier to dress and undress your pet.
If the product is intended for a puppy, then the pattern should be increased by several sizes.
Overalls
To make a jumpsuit for a mini Chihuahua, first make a life-size pattern on paper. For beginners, it is better to take a ready-made pattern.
- We take additional measurements: paw length, wrist and waist circumference.
- We clarify the parameters of our dog and transfer it to paper.
Overalls pattern for a Chihuahua - We copy the resulting details onto the fabric, cut them out and baste them.
- For girls, the abdominal parts are sewn together, and for boys, a cutout is left for the urethra.
- We try it on and adjust it.
- Then we sew the main parts and attach the small ones.
- We sew a zipper from the inside of the product.
- The neckline and cutouts for the tail and genitals can be finished with bias tape or gathered with an inserted elastic band.
- We turn up the trouser legs and stitch them.
- We make decorative stitching and the jumpsuit is ready.
Blouse
- We put 10 loops on the knitting needles and knit several rows.
- Using a ruler, measure the area of the resulting probe. According to the dog’s measurements, we calculate the number of neck loops.
- For a better fit, it is better to knit the neckline with an elastic band (two purl loops, two knit stitches).
- We knit to shoulder level, add the required number of loops with a yarn over, and remove the loops on the back so that there is no “hump.”
- We form the slots for the paws by closing the required number of loops symmetrically.
- It is better to make the armhole larger, since an opening that is too narrow will cause constrained movements and chafe the skin of the armpit.
- We knit enough from the armhole to cover the area of the body up to the groin fold.
- We finish the blouse with a knitted elastic band.
- We knit the placket, taking into account the slots for the buttons. A detailed knitting pattern for a blouse or sweater is shown in the photo below.

Knitted sweater
It is knitted similarly to a blouse, but can be knitted from one piece - in the round. On the lower back, you can lengthen the product by continuing the rows.
Shoes for Chihuahuas
- We measure the hind and front legs separately on a standing dog. The first dimension is from the pad to the claws of the central fingers. We make allowance for movement and allowance for seams. The second measurement is taken from the foot to the carpal (on the front paw) and to the hock (on the back paw) joints. Add seam allowances.
- The pattern is made in the shape of a large circle (the area up to the hock joint), the sole is a small circle (the area of the foot).
- The fabric is durable, not wet and not slippery. If desired, you can strengthen the foot area by gluing a circle of thicker or rubberized fabric to the outside.
- Place the dog's paw in the center of the circle, lift the fabric and crimp the paw. We collect excess fabric into darts. We stitch and trim off the excess. It is better to make the seams external to avoid chafing.
- Shoes must be secured to the paws above the feet. This can be achieved by making holes in the fabric and threading ribbons through, or by sewing Velcro into the same area.
The dog should walk as freely with shoes on as without them.

Mandatory clothing
Mandatory accessories that any dog of this breed should have include winter and demi-season overalls, season-appropriate shoes, Panama hats or baseball caps, and, of course, leashes, collars, harnesses and muzzles.
The Chihuahua also needs a sweater or vest to wear in the house when the room is cool . These same outfits can be worn outside, if the weather permits, and the usual demi-season overalls are already boring.
In some situations, it will not be possible to do without other clothing: for example, girls during estrus are recommended to wear special panties that protect the floor, furniture and other things in the house from contamination.
Another necessary accessory that you cannot do without in certain circumstances is a surgical blanket..
It is worn on dogs after abdominal surgery, for example, after a cesarean section or sterilization, and it is necessary to wear it in order to protect the surgical suture from contamination or wetness.
How to choose the size
To choose the right size of clothing for your pet, you need to take several measurements, and then use them to determine the size using special tables.
Basic measurements:
- Neck circumference.
- Length of back from withers to base of tail.
- Chest circumference.
Depending on their size and weight, Chihuahuas usually wear clothes in the following sizes: XS, S, M, and the largest individuals, whose weight exceeds the standard 3 kg, may also be suitable for clothes in size L:
- XS: back length - 15-20 cm, chest girth - 22-28 cm, neck girth - 12-20 cm. This size is suitable for standard puppies, as well as adult micro and mini Chihuahuas, whose weight is 0.7-1.2 kg.
- S: back length - 21-24 cm, chest girth - 29-35 cm, neck girth - 21-23 cm. This size is designed for mini and small standard dogs, whose weight is 1.2-2.3 kg.
- M: back length - 25-28 cm, chest girth - 36-41 cm, neck girth - 24-27 cm. This size is suitable for standard dogs weighing 2.4-3 kg.
- L: back length - 29-33 cm, chest girth - 42-46 cm, neck girth - 28-31 cm. It makes sense to buy clothes of this size for a Chihuahua whose weight exceeds the standard and is 3.2 kg or more.
At what temperature should you wear it?
All dogs' metabolism may be different, and some Chihuahuas have no undercoat at all, while others have quite developed undercoat.
Taking this into account, it is impossible to say exactly at what temperature the dog must be dressed in a sweater or overalls.
You need to focus on the pet’s well-being: if he trembles, clings to the owner and asks to be held as soon as he goes outside and this behavior is not associated with stress or fear, then the dog needs to be dressed.
NOTE!
When the air temperature outside or even in the house drops to +15 degrees, it is already recommended to put on a light demi-season overall or blanket on the Chihuahua.
You should switch to warm winter clothes when the temperature becomes +1-2 degrees.
If you have any doubts about whether you need to dress your Chihuahua for a walk, then it is better to take the dog out without clothes, and take a jumpsuit or sweater with you and, if necessary, put it on your pet.
There is no need to dress your dog “just in case,” since overheating is no less harmful for him than hypothermia.
We sew a vest for a dog
We transfer all the details of the pattern onto the fabric, not forgetting to leave 1 cm for seam allowances. Note! The part of the pattern where it says “fold line” must be transferred to the fabric folded in half. We cut out the lower part of the vest with a fold, and the back consists of two parts. We cut the lining stitch so that it completely duplicates the details of the membrane fabric.
This is what should happen. If you look closely, you will see in the photo a wide collar according to option 1. Yes, at first I planned to do this, but as I already wrote, at the last minute I changed my mind to the second option.
Next, we sew the parts of the lining and the main fabric on the sides, from the wrong side.
We connect the lining and membrane fabrics “face to face” and sew along the bottom of the vest and along the edges of the sleeves.
We turn it inside out and from the front side we put a finishing stitch along the bottom and along the sleeves.
But there is no need to rush further. We sweep away the shoulder sections of the parts and try on the entire “design” on the pet. It is at this stage that you can “adjust” the vest so that it fits well on your pet. Somewhere you need to cut something off, but somewhere you might even “build it up,” as I had to do.
For example, I had to sew on an additional strip, since Jack’s vest was clearly too tight. But in the end it turned out pretty cute!
Make sure that the vest fits your dog well: it’s not too tight, the armholes don’t put pressure on the armpits, and the shoulders don’t bulge.
If everything is in order, you can use a sewing machine to stitch the hangers and sew on the collar.
Next, we attach the zipper.
To ensure that the bottom of the vest fits tightly around the belly, we will sew on a wide elastic band.
Hooray! I think it turned out well. We did a great job and sewed a vest for our beloved pet ourselves.

- fleece - this material is synthetic, but its characteristics are close to natural wool. Fleece is quite practical, wear-resistant, stretches well without restricting the pet’s movement. It does not cause allergies or irritation, and is often used as a lining for warm clothes;
- microfiber - absorbs moisture, but dries quickly, quite dense, elastic and warm. It is used for sewing walking clothes and dressing gowns. Such material is not always good for walking, as it becomes electrified;
- cotton and linen - this fabric is perfect for summer walks. She breathes, quite lightly. The best option is a combination of cotton and linen threads. Linen wrinkles a lot and doesn’t stretch very well;
- satin - more often used as a lining. In its pure form, satin is good for long-haired breeds, as it prevents the coat from tangling and preserves its appearance;
- padding polyester - this material is used as a filler for warm clothes. It retains heat, does not wrinkle, and restores its shape. There is a more modern synthetic down that is warmer than natural down, but does not bunch up after washing.
Pay attention to the quality of tailoring. The abundance of seams reduces thermal insulation. On quality items there are few seams, they are smooth and without protruding threads.
If you need clothes for rainy weather, you can test the fabric by dropping water on it. If it is wet, then you need another thing for walking in the rain.
