Description of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed: character traits and reviews from owners

Biewer Yorkshire Terriers are a young breed that appeared at the end of the 20th century.

During their existence, these decorative dogs, thanks to their pretty appearance, friendly character and unusual color, managed to conquer many dog breeders around the world.

In addition, the Biewer's coat does not shed and does not cause allergies.

They are active and have no trouble getting along with other pets and small children, making them ideal pets for people with active lifestyles and young families.

Origin story

Biewer Yorkies originated in Germany from breeders named Biewer. In 1984, in a litter of ordinary Yorkies, as a result of a mutation in the gene responsible for the presence of white spots, a puppy with black-white-gold fur was born.

The Biewer couple began breeding such unusual puppies and after 4 years of selection, in 1988, at a show in Wiesbaden, they presented to the public a new breed - the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier.

As an independent breed under the name “Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pom”, Biewers were registered by the German Dog Fanciers Club.

The latest version of the standard was signed in 2007; the breed was officially recognized in Russia in 2008.

Biewers are not just one of the color varieties of Yorkshire terriers.

American scientists conducted a genetic examination, the results of which revealed differences in the DNA of Yorkies and Mini Biewers, which indicates the use of blood from other breeds for their breeding.

Varieties not recognized by the standard

These varieties of Yorkie Biewer colors are not currently recognized by any international standard. But they exist in nature and perhaps someday will become officially recognized. Dogs with such an unusual exterior are very beautiful, they are happy to be kept as pets.

Biro

This is the name given to terriers whose genotype exhibits the “chocolate gene.” The first chocolate-golden-white puppies appeared in Germany in one of the litters of purebred Biewers in 2004. The main difference between Biro dogs is the beautiful proportional combination of these three colors. There is no black color in the biro color.

Golddust York

Another unrecognized handsome guy from this family. The romantic translation of this name is gold dust. This species has two colors: snow-white and gold. In our country, such dogs are very rare; they are more likely to be found in Europe. In addition to the exclusive color, this type of Yorkie Biewer is distinguished by its larger size; the weight of such dogs can reach 5 kilograms.

Important: unscrupulous breeders may offer pure black Biewer Yorkies at an inflated price. Be careful when choosing puppies. Black puppies are only suitable for the role of pets; you cannot make a show career with them.

Description of dogs

Biewers are small decorative dogs with a luxurious long coat.

Despite their small size, these are quite strong animals . They have a compact body, a flat back, a voluminous chest and a muscular croup that smoothly turns into a high-set tail.

Movements are free and graceful.

The coat is straight, does not hide the proportions of the body, but is thick and dense, silky, shiny, and as long as possible..

On the head, a combination of white-golden-blue or black-white-golden, with a symmetrical arrangement of white and colored spots, is acceptable.

Only 2 colors can be combined on the body: white and black or blue and white, without inclusions of a golden hue.

Biro York and other subspecies

Mini Yorkshire Terrier (dwarf): difference from the standard one

The Biro Yorkshire Terrier is a white Yorkie with chocolate-colored spots and golden tints. The first puppy of this breed of Biewer was obtained thanks to a natural mutation. In one litter, along with this animal, 3 more ordinary Biewer Terriers were born.

Now Biro-Yorks have become known all over the world, although only a few nurseries are engaged in breeding these animals. But you can buy puppies of this subspecies of terriers all over the world - there are offers for sale in Moscow, New York and Berlin.

White Erki - Biro dogs are small in size and are comfortable to carry in your arms. They inherited from their ancestors a balanced psyche, cheerfulness, and curiosity. These small charming dogs look like a funny living toy, at the same time they are smart and elegant, willing to train and learn. Their luxurious appearance and love for their owners are appreciated by lovers of rare decorative dogs.

The list of decorative dogs, which are very similar in appearance to biros, also includes animals for apartment living, bred in Russia by selecting terriers and other decorative miniature dogs. After registration with the RKF in 2013, the breed began to be called Russian Salon Dogs - Mermaids.

Dogs have an active temperament, are playful, friendly, and have no aggression towards people or other animals. This canine character trait should be mandatory for Russian Salon dogs. “Mermaids” rarely bark, are not fussy, and are not intrusive.

Pet character

Biewers are ideal companion dogs.

They are devoted and equally attached to all family members, strive to always be close, accompany their owners everywhere and participate in all aspects of their lives. They need attention and care, they do not tolerate loneliness well.

These are active, affectionate, cheerful, inquisitive dogs with a balanced character and a stable psyche . It is important to remember that these are still terriers, which means they can be temperamental and stubborn.

NOTE!

Biewer Yorkies get along well with children and enjoy playing with them, get along well with other pets, and do not show aggression towards strangers.

However, if necessary, they will fearlessly defend their owner, despite their compact size.

Some representatives of the breed can be pugnacious and overly guard their territory, but this is the exception rather than the rule..

Reviews from happy owners

After analyzing reviews of Biewer dogs on the Internet, we can conclude that the Biewer Yorkie is the ideal dog! Happy owners of miniature dogs point to their pets' playfulness, their curiosity, calm disposition, and bright and pretty appearance. Such babies are purchased for children, as a companion for single people, as a friend for large families. Sometimes owners note that the dog becomes capricious and disobedient. But usually this is how the pet tries to attract attention or remind you of itself. The baby just needs constant communication. It is worth paying attention to the beaver - and he will immediately again become the embodiment of virtue. The dog seems to have been created to become a beloved family member!

The character of Biewer Yorkies is characterized by curiosity, a calm disposition, and a bright and pretty appearance.

How to identify a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier?

At the age of 2 months, the weight of a Biewer is approximately 900-950 grams. The entire body is evenly covered with hair, there are no bald spots or bald spots.

The coat is without undercoat, and subsequently flows down.

The color should not just be three-color, it should have a logic and a certain pattern: the chest, belly, front and hind legs are white, from the chest the white color rises to the neck and chin.

Ears should be erect or in the erect stage; drooping ears are unacceptable.

Color change with age

Standard Yorkshire Terrier puppies are born black and tan on their faces, under their tails, on their legs, and on their chests. The bottom of the dog's body should be bronze. Tan marks can be of different sizes and shades - golden-bronze, golden-yellow. White spots are allowed on the chest and paws, which should disappear with age.

As dogs grow older, the structure and pigmentation of their coat changes, causing the hairs to lighten. For a puppy to be considered a purebred animal, as it grows older, all the black and black-brown hairs on its face, on the top and sides of its head, around the eyes, and on the neck must change color. In these areas of the dog's body, the coat should turn golden brown. The shades of fur on their chest and paws should also change.

The color change occurs over a long period, but individually, usually begins at 3-3.5 months, ends by the age of 1 year. For some dogs, the process of recoloring sometimes lasts a very long time - up to 2 years of age.

The RKF standard for Biewer Terrier establishes that puppies may or may not change coat color. Biewer puppies born black and white may remain that way, or they may become blue and white. Blue shades are a modified black color after recoloring, which can begin in one-year-old dogs or three-year-old dogs.

HISTORY OF THE BIEVER YORKSHIRE TERRIER

The beginning of this wonderful breed was laid in January 1984, when Snowflake (Schneeflöckchen) was born in the German kennel of high-breed Yorkshire terriers “von Friedheck” - the world’s first blue-white-gold Biewer Yorkie. The parents of this miracle were standard titled Yorkies: Darling von Friedheck and Fru Fru von Friedheck - both Junior World Champions of 1981 at an exhibition in Dortmund.

The owners of the von Friedheck kennel, Mr. Werner and Mrs. Gertrude Beaver, have been breeding Yorkies for 20 years. When, from the next mating of ordinary Yorkies, they received an unusual puppy with a large number of white spots in the color, they were very surprised and began searching for a possible recessive gene in the dogs of their breeding line. They were able to detect the “spotting” gene, which was present in both dogs involved in the mating. The new color was so beautiful that the Beaver couple decided to fix it, and they succeeded.

Currently, the breed a la Pom Pon is outside the FCI classification, since this breed is still very young. But, despite this, Beavers have found their admirers among dog breeders in many countries around the world. Beaver Clubs have been created in many countries. Beavers are actively exhibited at club exhibitions. And although Mr. Beaver is no longer alive, connoisseurs of the new breed continue his work. Now in Germany there is an International Biewer Breed Club. Members of this club are committed to upholding the standard that was set by Mr. Beaver.

Thus, through a random mutation of genes and thanks to subsequent careful selection, a new breed was developed, which every year is gaining more and more fame and gaining more and more fans.

The first litter of puppies with large snow-white spots was born in Mr. Biewer's kennel from two Yorkshire terriers (FCI), Junior World Champions - Dortmund, 1981. The father was Darling von Friedheck, and the mother was Fru Fru Von Friedheck (01/20/1984). The wonderful puppy was named Schneefloeckchen Von Friedheck - Snowflake. The extraordinary beauty of the puppy prompted the breeders to continue breeding work in this direction. And in March 1988, Mr. Beaver presented his dogs for the first time in the show ring in the German city of Weisbaden, calling them then black and white Yorkies. A year later, he wrote the first short standard, after which the breed was recognized by the German Kennel Club ASN and was then named Biewer Yorkshire Terrier. German breeders, followed by dog handlers in the USA, Canada and a number of other countries, took up the breeding of Biewer calves with unprecedented enthusiasm.

German sources, citing Mr. Biever, claimed that the breed arose as a result of a mutation in a recessive gene (pietbald), which determines the appearance of white spots. Indeed, in the case of the Biewer, its resemblance to the Yorkshire Terrier suggests that it is only a color variant of the Yorkshire Terrier. However, a comparative analysis of the DNA of Biewers and Yorkshire Terriers, recently carried out by American geneticists at the request of the Biewer Terrier Club of America, showed that the DNA of Biewers and Yorkies are significantly different from each other. These studies give experts reason to claim that we have different breeds. At the same time, Ms. Beaver shared information with her American colleagues about the initial stages of the formation of the breed, about the difficulties and mistakes that always accompany pioneers. We can only hope that someday Mrs. Biewer will lift the veil of secrecy and we will find out whether other breeds were used in the creation of Bievers and which ones. In any case, the history of dog breeding shows that in the creation of new successful modern breeds, representatives of other breeds were used, and sometimes from different breed groups. Our Black (Russian) Terrier.

Be that as it may, we received as a gift an amazing breed of Biewer Yorkshire Terrier A La Pom Pont; in Russia it's just BIEVER. This breed combines the best qualities of decorative dogs - a cheerful, good-natured disposition, curiosity, sociability, intelligence, and tender affection for the owner. This is a truly delightful, lively, cheerful, intelligent and confident dog. A true companion dog that can easily adapt to the lifestyle and lifestyle of its owner.

ABOUT THE BIEVER YORK BREED

Author of the article Svetlana Aleksandrovna Uspenskaya, head of the nursery Rus Komilfot (https://www.toyter.com)

At its core, the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier ala Pom Pom is one of the most interesting and original breeds ever to emerge in cynology. Consider just one fact of the unprecedented popularity throughout the world of the most beautiful and charismatic dogs called Biewer Yorkies, this at a time when more than 250 dog breeds have been created and recognized for every taste. But you are even more surprised when you learn more about the history of the creation of this breed. Having thoroughly studied the genealogy and the path that the breed has taken from the emergence of its ancestors to the present day, you are surprised to see that the breed arose almost entirely on the basis of another breed - the Yorkshire Terrier. The Biewer York is an original breed and the laurels from its creation belong to the breeders - the family couple Werner and Gertrude Biewer from Germany.

The reason for the creation of the breed was the appearance in the litter of seemingly the most ordinary Yorkies, a black-white-gold puppy, a girl known as “Snowflake”. This happened in January 1984. Using this parent pair (Darling and Fru-Fru v. Friedheck), which produced a unique puppy, a total of three females were produced, which were used to create the breeding core of the future breed. These dogs were used to produce offspring in close inbreeding, the purpose of which was to isolate and consolidate the white spotting genotype. Subsequently, to prevent inbreeding depression, the resulting stock was crossed with Yorkshire terriers. It is clear that for such a selection dogs were selected that met certain requirements. The authors of the breed set out to create a healthy, strong, cheerful terrier, with a beautiful, unpretentious coat, a stable psyche and excellent health. Now, a decade and a half later, we can say with confidence that they succeeded.

The history of the creation of beavers is riddled with legends and intrigue. One of them is speculation about the participation of various other breeds in the creation of the breed. In particular, they are called Maltese and Shih Tsu. While there is no direct evidence of the participation of these breeds. Do not forget that the Germans are very pedantic, especially when it comes to maintaining documentation. It seems that in the event of a planned influx of blood from other breeds, this would be officially documented, because the author of the breed has every right to improve his creation using such a well-known breed-forming method. However, no information is available on the use of other breeds. But based on indirect evidence, this can be assumed. For example, there are sometimes mysterious moments in the pedigrees of modern Bievers. For example, dogs with atypical colors for the breed, such as brown and tan. Or, atypical coat - shorthair. To be fair, it should be said that in the pedigrees of Biewers, as a young breed, there are columns “origin unknown.” So, theoretically, the participation of other breeds in the creation of beavers is possible and most likely took place, however, there is no documentary evidence. Moreover, as the American beaver researcher N. Anderson wittily noted, no one conducted a genetic examination.

Another legend concerns the actual name of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed A la Pom Pont. This unusual name is explained by one notable event in the history of the breed. The famous German singer Margot Eskens was presented with a Biewer Yorkie puppy in a bouquet of flowers during dinner. The new owner associated the colorful fluffy puppy with the pompom on the headdress of French sailors. With her light hand, a playful prefix appeared in the name of the breed - A La Pom Pont. A very bright, memorable touch in shaping the image of a new promising breed. However, there is another version of the formation of this particular prefix. The fact is that among the three mother bitches obtained from the original parent pair Darling v.Friedheck and Fru-Fru v.Friedheck, there was Grand Pom-Pon v.Friedheck, from which Scheneediavolo v.Friedheck was born, who became the founder of one of the most successful genealogical branches in the breed.

Touching on the topic of lines, it should be noted that almost all lines go back to the founder Darling v. Friedheck. After analyzing several dozen Biewer pedigrees, we came to the conclusion that the origin of the vast majority of dogs goes back to three ancestor males. Accordingly, we can safely distinguish three main lines. It should be noted that the Ukrainian beaver researcher I. Moskalenko came to a similar conclusion.

The ancestors of these three key lines are Diavoletto Bianko v. Friedheck, Schneewolf v. Friedheck and Schneeprinz v. Friedheck. Their best sons laid down their branches, which form the family tree of the breed.

The first Biewers were brought to Russia by enthusiasts who believed in the great future of this as yet unrecognized breed. And they were right, the popularity of beavers is growing and they are winning the hearts of more and more admirers. And this is not surprising, because this is not only one of the most beautiful dog breeds, Biewers are excellent companions, they have good health and psyche. Today Biewer Yorkshire Terriers are no longer a rarity at exhibitions in Moscow and St. Petersburg. They also appeared in other cities, in the South of Russia, in the Far East, and in other regions. Now they are exhibited at Russian exhibitions as part of a breed that is not recognized by the FCI, with preliminary assignment to group 9.

The modern Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pont is a medium-sized, compact, bony dog, short, but quite powerful for its height. If in Yorkshire terriers one can now observe significant variations in format and other exterior indices (knitted, boned, etc.), then Biewers are a surprisingly consolidated breed in many respects. Even without looking at the color, experts immediately note the characteristic breed features of the Biewer - a typical head with strong, developed jaws, a flat forehead, an attentive, calm expression, a wide, muscular body, strong limbs with excellent front and rear angles, strong, silky wool, which does not get tangled or tangled. In addition, Biewers have significantly healthier joints than the original breed. This is explained by directed selection for this trait, which led to an improvement in the structure of the musculoskeletal system and strengthening of the bones and joints. So, the Biewer is already a completely independent breed. This is, so to speak, in many respects an improved Yorkshire terrier “with black and white,” as Mr. Beaver aptly puts it. This happened due to the fact that the management of breeding was in single, interested hands. And German breeders have traditionally been famous as talented breeders.

The colors of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier are described quite succinctly in the breed standard. However, the colors differ in some variety, which can be fundamentally divided into two groups - coated and spotted. Young Biewers often have jet black markings on the body, which later, sometimes after three years, usually fade to a steely (blue) color. The Biewer's head should be colored "in good symmetry." The main white markings should extend to cover the entire underside of the dog - from the chin there is a frill, then the white color spreads to the entire belly and legs. An extreme option for increasing depigmentation zones involves an almost white body, but not more than 80% white. The remaining 20 (or more)% are black (blue) spots of various sizes. Speckled spots create a special charm, making the dog’s body striped. The spots usually appear as the dog grows, after 3-5 months. The genetics of the appearance of markings is inherited in a recessive manner in relation to the solid color. In addition, different expressions of white spotting are encoded by different genes, such as the Irish white spotting gene and genes for different expressions of piebaldness. And also not the least role in the shades and characteristics of colors is played by the presence and combination of modifier genes, the influence of which has not been fully studied.

This is the case with red (golden) tans. The richest, richest tones are preferred. However, there is a problem of insufficient intensity of the tan tone. It seems that this will be a field for breeders to work in the coming years.

As already noted, Biewers are generally a very prosperous breed. Since the approach to a healthy lifestyle, including animals, is popular all over the world, the new young breed was bred taking into account these principles. Therefore, it is impossible to name any breed-specific diseases in Bievers. Moreover, if such a danger arises, directed selection will be able to cope with the problem. Moreover, the natural strength of the Biewer provides all the prerequisites for this.

The Biewer Yorkshire, or the “black and white” Yorkie is very beautiful. This exclusive breed is for people with developed aesthetic taste. Biewer wool is quite unpretentious due to its silk structure; it is easy to comb and does not tangle. However, in dogs with a predominance of white color, it is quite easily soiled, and therefore requires regular care and careful handling during walks. According to the standard, a Biewer does not have to have full-length coat; ¾ of the dog’s height is enough. This makes life without curlers possible even for a show dog. And this is very good, since Biewers are dogs with an active lifestyle. The Biewer's coat should be absolutely straight, flowing down from the parting on the back. The owners of many dogs of this breed do not cut their hair, as is customary for Yorkshire terriers, but rather decorate the silhouette of the dog with a model haircut, and the dog flaunts in all its splendor. Shampoo and conditioner must be selected by an experienced hairdresser, and then the owner himself learns how to properly wash and trim excess hair. Owners usually learn how to attach a bow on the forehead themselves, although groomers have many tricks in this matter. Brush the dog daily; you can bathe it once every 7-10 days, if necessary.

The first beavers were brought to Russia just a few years ago (...). However. Do not forget that this breed is not recognized by the FCI and therefore there was no clarity on many issues regarding the official registration of dogs in the RKF system. The official recognition of the breed in Russia was made on the initiative of the famous Russian dog handler, expert Mrs. Bauzhes E.V., who is the President of the National Biewer Club of Russia. Today, the main regulatory documents have been developed and approved, making it possible to fully work with the breed in Russia. The breed standard is detailed and presented in more detail. Control over the quality of breeding stock has been tightened, taking into account the characteristics of the breed, which is currently undergoing development. This is done to avoid falsification and cases of crossbreeding with dogs of other breeds. Despite the fact that the number of beavers in Russia is still small, it is already possible to draw some conclusions about the state of the breed and the prospects for its development. Russian dog handlers have taken a very important step to improve the health of the breed as a whole. The lower limit for live weight of animals has been determined - 2300g. That is, now we can hope that the breed is not in danger of vicious reduction of individuals, entailing fragility of build and an accompanying bouquet of developmental defects. In addition, restrictions on the dental formula of breeding dogs were adopted. Only two premolars are allowed to be missing, which is completely natural when it comes to terriers.

Within the breed, at least two exterior types can be clearly distinguished. The first is small dogs. Lighter, square format, upturned on the legs, heads with a pronounced transition from the forehead to the muzzle, a shorter muzzle, small pointed ears. And the second one is heavy, squat, wide, compact. The head has a less pronounced transition to a longer muzzle, the ears are large. In addition, there are a large number of dogs of the intermediate type. Probably, among them it is worth looking for potential champions, dogs that combine desirable qualities. But consolidation of this type is the task of breeders for the near future. You should avoid heavy, rough heads with large, soft ears, while maintaining a strong, compact body and good bones. Combined with the correct anatomy, this will be the desired type of Bieber.

Difference from a regular Yorkie

The main difference is the color. The fur of Yorkshire terriers is dark, steel-blue in color, while Biewers have a light coat and white markings on the head.

There are also differences in:

  • physique - beavers are larger, more muscular, their limbs are stronger;
  • time and place of appearance - Yorkies appeared in the 19th century. in Great Britain, and beavers at the end of the 20th century. in Germany;
  • quality of wool - Biewers have thicker, denser and more stain-resistant wool, which is less likely to get tangled.

Experts say that the immunity of Bievers is stronger than that of ordinary Yorkies..

The unusual color and long shiny coat make Bievers stand out among other decorative breeds and serve as the main distinguishing mark from Yorkshire terriers.

In addition, beavers are stronger and faster due to their strong limbs and strong bones.

They also have better health - they are much less likely to have problems with their limbs.

Biewer or York: which is better?

The choice of a particular breed is based solely on personal preferences. Some people think that the Yorkshire Terrier is more beautiful and balanced than the Biewer, while others think it’s the opposite. The Biewer is distinguished by its extravagant color and stronger skeleton. These dogs are aimed at participating in competitions and exhibitions, so their pedigree must be impeccable. At the same time, exhibition does not negate the intelligence and activity of beavers, as well as love and devotion to the owner.

Yorkshire terriers are most often adopted by ordinary families who dream of a kind and affectionate friend, so blood purity is almost unimportant. The cost of Yorkie puppies is much lower than that of Biewer puppies. This is explained by the wide distribution of the breed and the high percentage of mestizos. In any case, before choosing a new family member, you need to find out everything about the breed and prospects, because a hasty decision will affect the life and health of the animal.

If courage, cheerfulness and impressive appearance are important to a potential owner, you should pay attention to the Biewer Yorkie. This dog has a strong, independent character with a cute face and modest size.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of Biewer Yorkshire Terriers:

  • bright and unusual appearance;
  • compact size, allowing the pet to feel comfortable in a small apartment;
  • stable psyche;
  • non-aggressive character;
  • lack of shedding and specific odor;
  • intelligence and intelligence.

The disadvantages of the breed are related to the exterior: asymmetrical color, light eyes, drooping ears, short and curly hair.

Types of wool

The breed standard describes the Yorkshire Terrier's coat as straight, shiny, fine hair with a silky texture.
Only this structure of the coat gives the correct dark steel and gold color. This coat grows rather slowly, but when the dog reaches adulthood, its hair has the same length and density.

Types of coat that do not meet the breed standard:

  1. Cotton wool . This type is easy to identify - to the touch it resembles combed cotton wool or tow. This type of wool lacks elasticity and shine, but has a fine texture and a dark slate color that appears dark blue.
  2. Coarse wool. This type of coat is difficult to determine from a small puppy. When a dog reaches six months of age, its coat becomes sparse, uneven and faded. This type of coat is hard to the touch, has a dark, almost black color, and does not grow to the required length even with regular care using expensive grooming products, since the ends of the hairs constantly break off.
  3. Black faded wool . The most undesirable type of coat for a Yorkshire Terrier. This coat is soft to the touch, very thick, grows quickly, has a wavy structure and curled tips, but is completely devoid of shine and looks dull.

Life expectancy and health

Biewers are the longest-living dogs among other decorative breeds.

Their average life expectancy with proper care is 13-15 years or more.

At the same time, they have a tendency to the following diseases:

  • congenital vascular disease – manifests itself in puppyhood and leads to stunting of the pet’s growth;
  • pancreatitis - occurs as a result of poor diet;
  • Legg-Perthes disease – necrosis of the femoral head.

Biewers often inherit genetic pathologies such as:

  • violation of teeth change;
  • districhiasis;
  • tracheal collapse;
  • dislocation of the kneecap;
  • cryptorchidism;
  • allergy;
  • sensitive digestion.

IMPORTANT!

To keep your pet healthy, regular preventive examinations and immediate treatment are necessary if dangerous symptoms are detected.

It is also important to promptly deworm your pet and treat it against fleas and ticks.

Pregnancy

It lasts 58-62 days in dogs. During this period, the bitch needs care. Pay special attention to nutrition. Additionally, add vitamins to your diet.

Three weeks after mating, do an ultrasound to determine the number of puppies. If there are a lot, they will be small in size. The dog will be able to give birth easily.

In the case when there are few puppies (2-3), it may be necessary to prepare for a caesarean section, because the fetus will be large and the birth will be difficult.

What are the signs of labor:

  • A drooping belly causes the bitch to go to the toilet frequently.
  • Trembling may occur throughout the body.
  • Refusal to eat.
  • Sometimes black diarrhea appears.
  • It is better if they take place in a veterinary clinic to avoid complications.

Content Features

Beavers are ideal for living in city apartments. These are clean dogs, caring for which is not burdensome.

Despite the fact that they can be trained to a tray or a diaper, Biewers need regular walks and physical activity to promote the proper development of the dog’s psyche, physical health and socialization.

The pet must be brushed daily and bathed no more than once a week using hypoallergenic shampoo..

The hair on the head should be collected in a ponytail to prevent hairs from getting into the eyes and irritating them.

Once a month, starting from 4 months of age, the Biewer needs to be cut.

If the dog participates in exhibitions, the haircut should be standard.

Hygienic care is also necessary, which consists of trimming the muzzle and ears.

To avoid skin irritation and eczema, you should wipe your Biewer's eyes daily with a damp cotton pad..

The dog's teeth should be brushed once a week at home and 2 times a year at the veterinary clinic.

You should also clean your pet's ears weekly and trim his nails monthly.

It is necessary to accustom your pet to hygiene procedures from a very early age..

Optimist with spirit: character traits of the breed

The Biewer Terrier is a cheerful and loving dog. She cuddles like a cat, can endlessly frolic and fool around, amusing the whole family with her antics.

However, Biewer Yorkies also have spots. These are terriers after all, and their character contains a fair amount of stubbornness. If the dogs didn’t like something, they grumble and show with a martyr’s look what a mortal insult they were given by not giving them an extra piece of cheese or forbidding them from chewing shoes.

This expression of universal grief on the face is a way of manipulation. Beavers know how adorable they are and exploit that charm.

Biewer Terriers remain puppies until old age. They are playful and will always support their owner in fun activities. Plus they love to participate in household chores: owners always trip over pets that follow a person everywhere.

The advantage of miniature Biewer Yorkies is that they do not get lost and do not run away, except at the call of sexual instinct. The pets watch the owner and walk next to his leg.

Like most small breeds, tri-colored Yorkies suffer from a Napoleon complex. They attack large dogs and can come into conflict with a Rottweiler. Don't be surprised if a tiny dog dominates a shepherd - dominance in dogs is not determined by size.

However, Biewer Yorkies are controlled. Aggression towards unfamiliar large dogs ends in failure.

Raising Biewer Terriers is not easy, but it is necessary. An ill-mannered Yorkie is a disaster. Training is difficult. On the one hand, Biewer Yorkies cannot be harshly punished, on the other hand, they are manipulators and stubborn. They may not follow commands or interpret orders in their own way.

However, dogs cope with the general training course (GTC). And they don't need more.

Feeding Bievers

You can feed Biewer Yorkies with natural products or ready-made dry food, but you need to choose one thing - you cannot mix 2 types of feeding.
With a natural diet, the basis of the menu should be lean meat, as well as lean sea fish, tripe, boiled offal and buckwheat or rice porridge.

In addition, the menu should include:

  • dairy and fermented milk products;
  • vegetables;
  • fruits;
  • greenery.

Can't give:

  • bones, especially tubular bones;
  • river fish;
  • fat meat;
  • sweets, smoked foods, pickles and marinades;
  • bakery products;
  • legumes

To prevent plaque and when changing teeth, beavers should be given compressed beef tendons.

It is necessary to give your pet an additional vitamin and mineral complex.

The serving is calculated based on the weight of the animal: one tablespoon of food for every 500 grams of weight.

Feeding dry food saves time on food preparation, does not require additional vitamins, and the recommended portions are indicated on the package.

Economy class feed should be avoided due to the likelihood of containing flavor enhancers, dyes, antibiotics and flavorings. Suitable food for Bievers should be premium or super premium.

The following brands have proven themselves well:

  • ROYAL CANIN (Yorkshire Terrier Junior, Yorkshire Terrier Adult);
  • Orijen;
  • Purina Pro Plan;
  • Mera Dog;
  • Hill's;
  • Acana.

An allergic reaction and gastrointestinal upset may occur due to improperly selected food.

What to feed your Yorkie

Feeding a Biewer Yorkie puppy from two to five months is done 4 times a day. For babies, diet is very important, so feeding times must be specific. From five months to one year, dogs receive food three times a day. After twelve months they are transferred to the morning-evening regimen.

Bievers can be fed both natural food and dry food. In the first case, the diet should consist of 2/3 meat and 1/3 cereals, cottage cheese and vegetables. In addition, vitamins and supplements will be needed, the dosages of which should be calculated by a doctor. A lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to metabolic disorders and diseases.

For this reason, many dog owners prefer to feed their dogs dry food. The composition of factory feeds already includes the necessary vitamins, which allows you not to worry about a lack of nutrients. In the case of a dry diet, you need to carefully monitor the constant availability of fresh water. Additionally, a diet lacking variety can lead to adverse effects.

Feeds come in different compositions, qualities and directions. Some of them are intended exclusively for neutered or adult animals, and some are for allergy sufferers and children.

Biewer Yorkies are prohibited:

  • hard bones and game bones;
  • sausages;
  • legumes;
  • cheeses with a high percentage of fat;
  • River fish;
  • potato;
  • confectionery and flour products;
  • cabbage;
  • pork and other fatty meats.

Biewer Yorkies live 12-15 years, but poor and unbalanced nutrition can shorten this period by several years.

Training and education

Biewers are not working dogs, not hunting or guard dogs, so they do not need any special knowledge; it is enough to instill in them the rules of behavior and teach them order.

These dogs are quite easy to train to a litter box or diaper, so this is where you should start.

Afterwards, you need to teach your pet simple commands, such as “fu” “come”, “lie down”, “sit” and “place”, which promote adequate behavior of the animal during walks and help avoid such unpleasant situations as eating garbage or damaging things.

It is also necessary to teach the Biewer to refuse food offered by strangers.

Representatives of this breed are smart and quite easy to train, but they can become stubborn and shirk their activities, so the owner must show persistence and patience (the training process is shown in the photo).

You can’t physically punish a dog - for a Biewer, just raise your voice a little and change the intonation and they will understand everything, as they are sensitive to changes in the owner’s mood.

Rewards in the form of treats or praise for correctly executed commands are welcomed.

How to position the ears

Sometimes, due to changing teeth or lack of calcium in the body, beavers' ears do not stand up. In this case, the puppies will need help; the procedure includes several stages.

  1. To begin with, you can try giving puppies gelatin (dosage: a little more than the tip of a knife) or a specialized drug.
  2. If drug therapy does not bring results, the ears are glued using a patch.

There are several methods of gluing (in the form of a crown, a bundle with fastenings, etc.), however, before carrying out the procedure, it is better to consult a doctor so that he can select the safest and most effective method.

Price range

The price of Biewer Yorkshire Terrier puppies depends on the location of the kennel, the class of the puppy, and the titles of the parents.

In nurseries, puppies suitable for participation in exhibitions and breeding cost an average of 50 thousand rubles or more, pet class dogs - 15-35 thousand rubles.

You can purchase a puppy without a pedigree through an ad, second hand. The cost will be much lower, but the pet will not be completely healthy.

Key points in training

Decorative pets do not need targeted training, like hunting or guard dogs. But it is important to educate all pets. Owners of small dogs spoil them, which spoils their character.

From the first minutes in the house, the puppy must understand that the world does not revolve around him, that the owners are leaders: they feed, they walk, they are always right.

It is better not to let the baby on the bed, designate his personal place to sleep. Clear time frames for feeding and walking are established. All attempts to manipulate and beg for food are ignored. The dog is explained what can and cannot be done. To do this, they use rewards with treats and punishment with their absence.

Read about how to properly train a dog in the article: “Training a puppy: effective methods from dog handlers, learning commands at home.”

In order for the animal to remember its name, it is always addressed only by its nickname, especially in the first months of life. Beaver will need commands: “no”, “near”, “sit”, “place”. To correct behavior, you can contact a dog handler.

How to choose a puppy?

This is a rather rare breed that is gaining popularity, therefore, in order to purchase a healthy and purebred Biewer, you should contact specialized nurseries, and not buy a dog from your own hands..

Before purchasing, you need to find out from the breeders about the character and origin of the puppy, the health and titles of the parents, inspect the premises where the dogs are kept, find out about their living conditions and nutrition.

To exclude the possibility of purchasing a puppy with the wrong color, unpigmented nose and eyelids, and light irises, you must carefully examine it and compare it with the breed standard.

In a healthy puppy:

  • cheerful look;
  • there is no fear of people;
  • rather thick paws and short hair;
  • proportional torso;
  • not bloated belly;
  • dark eyes, no discharge.

CAREFULLY!

You can take a puppy to a new home only after he is 2, or preferably 3 months old.

Pedigree traits will appear when the puppy reaches 5-6 months.

Mating

The first mating is carried out after the second heat at the age of 15-18 months. Earlier mating can harm the dog’s body and provoke the development of pathologies in the puppies in the womb. If the girl was not bred before the age of four, it is better to abandon breeding forever. Puberty in boys begins at the age of six months, so the optimal period for the first mating is 9-14 months.

If you do not want to have offspring, then dogs are sterilized. As a rule, Bievers are castrated after the onset of puberty, at 7-8 months. Sterilization is carried out later, but the young body copes better with surgical intervention (+ poor tolerance of anesthesia by beavers). This will prevent the appearance of offspring and relieve the consequences of marks and estrus.

Is it possible to breed a Biewer with a Yorkie?

No, the Biewer and Yorkshire Terrier are different breeds, so their puppy will be considered a mixed breed. Such matings are prohibited by the standard. If breeders have crossed a Yorkie and a Biewer, they should not offer the puppies for sale.

Possible diseases

Decorative dogs, unfortunately, are susceptible to a number of pathologies and diseases, many of which can be seen in puppies:

  • Legg-Perthes syndrome – damage to the head of the femoral bone, which leads to lameness and muscle atrophy;
  • pancreatitis is the result of a malnutrition;
  • cardiomyopathy;
  • tracheal collapse.

Studying breed lines will help prevent the mistake of purchasing a puppy with a congenital pathology. Observation by a veterinarian is a good prevention of current diseases.
