Dana drops for dogs - a universal protector against fleas and ticks

Composition and release form

Dana Ultra spot-on drops were developed in the laboratory of the Russian manufacturer of veterinary drugs Api-San. They are marketed internationally under the non-patented name Fipronil.

Dan drops are intended to kill parasites in dogs.

Dana Ultra is available in polymer tubes of 2 ml, 1 ml, 15 ml or transparent dropper bottles of 15 ml.

Dana Ultra Neo drops, which have a similar composition, are packaged in more convenient pipettes with the following volume:

  • 0.4 ml for dogs and puppies weighing up to 5 kg;
  • 0.8 ml for dogs weighing 5-10 kg;
  • 1.6 ml for animals weighing 10-20 kg;
  • 3.2 ml for large breed pets from 20 to 50 kg.

The drug is a light yellow, oily, transparent liquid with an indistinct odor.

It contains:

  • fipronil or diazinon;
  • isopropyl alcohol;
  • dimethylformamide;
  • tribasic carboxylic (citric) acid;
  • polyethylene glycol.

The auxiliary components of the drug facilitate the distribution of the active substance over the animal’s skin and prevent the development of the inflammatory process at the site of the bite.

Important. In recent years, the active ingredient in Dana drugs has been a new generation organophosphorus compound developed on the basis of fipronil - diazinon. It has higher anti-mite activity and water resistance.

Indications for use

The presence of ectoparasites can be noticed by the cat's intense scratching. If you shake off the litter into a wet bath, you may notice blood stains—this is flea excrement dissolving on the wet surface.

Important! After treatment for infection with ectoparasites, it is necessary to conduct a course of anthelminthic treatment for the cat.

Localization of parasites is usually observed in the neck area, on the head and in the tail area, where the skin is thin and sensitive, rich in blood vessels, and it is more difficult for the animal to lick the fur and catch parasites. When scratched, crusted wounds appear at the sites of bites, the skin peels, and hair loss is possible. The presence of tangles and matted fur is especially dangerous - this is a place where lice accumulate and a source of damage to the skin.

Ectoparasites themselves are not as dangerous as the consequences that can result from prolonged and untreated infestation:

  • often skin parasites are carriers of helminths;
  • possible infectious diseases from tick bites (encephalitis, borreliosis, tularemia);
  • infected pets may become weak and unable to eat or rest properly;
  • Inflammatory processes on the skin and suppuration in areas of scratching are possible.

Infection occurs when walking on the street, contact with infected animals, or from bedding. Parasites can be brought into the house on clothes and shoes from the street or from basements. In this case, infection is also observed in domestic cats that do not go outside.

Active substances and mechanism of action of the drug

In the original formula of the drops, fipronil was used as the active ingredient. It belongs to the derivatives of phenylpyrazoles - inhibitory substances that affect the transmission of nerve impulses in the body of parasites.

The drug for dogs Dana causes the death of blood-sucking parasites.

Phenylpyrazoles have a contact mechanism of action. When biting a treated animal, the parasite receives a portion of blood containing a drug that causes overexcitation of the nervous system, blocking of receptors, uncontrolled muscle contraction, disorientation, paralysis and, as a result, death of insects and ticks at all stages of development.

Thanks to phenylpyrazoles, the drug is successful against:

  • ixodid, sarcoptoid, notoedres, otodectes, demodicosis mites, infecting dogs with piroplasmosis, brucellosis, sarcoptic mange (pruritic scabies), borreliosis;
  • 50 species of fleas, including the most common Stenocephalides canis and Stenocephalides felis, leading to skin infestations and infection with tapeworm eggs;
  • lice that feed on the blood of dogs;
  • lice-eaters carrying dipylidiasis pathogens.

Once on the animal’s skin, the drug spreads throughout the body, penetrates the subcutaneous fatty tissues, hair follicles and retains protective properties: against ticks for a month, against fleas, lice and lice for 2 months.

Important. Dan drops do not have repellent properties. Ticks land on the animal, come into contact with the drug and, in most cases, die before they can become infected. Dead, inactive ticks found in a pet's fur must be removed and burned.

Dan drops are effective against a wide range of ectoparasites in dogs.

What are the means

Blood-sucking insects that can stay on a dog’s body for a long time not only weaken the animal’s body, but also infect it with the most dangerous diseases.

Therefore, with the onset of spring, it is necessary to take measures to protect your pet from attacks by ectoparasites. For this purpose, many products are available that are affordable and effective.

Anti-tick drops for dogs are sold in the following forms:

  • solutions for injections
  • tablets
  • shampoos
  • sprays
  • collars
  • drops

The effectiveness of any drug depends not on the method of application, but on the composition - how correctly the insecticides are selected. Drops applied to the dog's withers are a popular form of medication:

  • inexpensive
  • easy to use
  • last a long time.

Drops applied to the skin are distributed throughout the subcutaneous layer and do not enter the bloodstream. The coat also becomes lethal to ticks, fleas and other insects.

The medicine is sold in plastic pipettes, the dosage is calculated according to the weight of the animal.

The standard duration of the drug is 30-40 days. After a month, the effect weakens, so you must remember to renew it. For greater safety, you can apply the product with a slight overlap - after 24-28 days.

Collars and shampoos are usually used as an addition to the main product, which is applied to the withers or injected under the skin.

Most protective products have a wide spectrum of action and at the same time repel fleas, lice and other parasites. Some drugs simultaneously destroy worms (you should carefully read the list of recommended products, and also become familiar with the properties of the medicine when purchasing).

It is advisable to use anti-tick medications simultaneously or immediately after taking anthelmintic medications.

For recovered or weakened animals, drops are used on the recommendation of a doctor. For pregnant and lactating bitches also - the instructions for the drug indicate the possibility of use. Each drug also has a minimum age for use.

Drops have a prolonged effect

In addition, flea drops effectively fight other parasites - with their help you can destroy lice and ticks.

Drops have a prolonged effect. After their application, they continue to act for several weeks, and all this time the dog is protected and does not suffer from parasites.

Directions for use and dosage

When processing, follow the general rules for applying external antiparasitic drugs of the spot-on group:

  • refrain from bathing the animal with detergents 2-3 days before and after the procedure;
  • avoid exposure to the sun for 24 hours after treatment;
  • The drug Dana is applied to the dog’s skin in the withers area.
    take into account that the drug begins to be guaranteed to act only 24 hours after application;
  • drops are applied to dry skin (not to fur) without scratches, abrasions, scratching, or ulcers;
  • applied to the skin in places inaccessible to licking (withers, base of the skull, between the shoulder blades);
  • For large dogs and dogs with thick hair, drops are additionally applied to several points located along the spine, but not further than the lower back;
  • the dosage is calculated based on the exact weight of the animal;
  • treatment is carried out several days before the start of mite activity.

When treating your pet with Dana Ultra and Dana Ultra Neo drops use:

  • for adult animals and puppies weighing up to 5 kg - 0.4 ml of the drug;
  • for dogs weighing from 5 kg to 10 kg - 0.8 ml;
  • for pets that have gained 10-20 kg, 1.6 ml is enough;
  • for dogs over 20 kg - 3.2 ml;
  • for dogs weighing more than 40 kg, the dose is 4.8 ml.

To destroy ticks found on a dog, 1-2 drops of the product are applied directly to the parasite and the place of its attachment to the body. After half an hour, the animal is examined; ticks that did not fall off on their own are carefully removed and destroyed.

It is possible to prescribe Dan drops for therapeutic purposes for ear scabies (otodectosis), sarcoptic mange, notoedrosis, and demodicosis. To establish the exact dosage and treatment regimen, you should contact your veterinarian.

Important: During the period of tick activity, it is permissible to carry out regular preventive treatments, but not more than once a month. If you regularly wash your paws or if your animal gets exposed to rain or when swimming in a pond, it is recommended to carry out additional treatment with an anti-parasitic spray containing a similar active ingredient.

Instructions for use of the medicine

If your pet is tormented by ticks, fleas, lice eaters, other ectoparasites, or it is simply time for a preventive measure, use the Dana Spot-on product. How to do it?

  1. First of all, you must open the package and take out the ampoule from the box, which, in fact, you will apply the product to the animal’s skin.
  2. The tip of the removed ampoule needs to be cut off to open the way for the product to flow out.
  3. Feel the animal's withers (the place on the back where the neck meets the back) and move the fur in different directions in this place so that a strip of skin is exposed to you.
  4. Apply along the animal's spine directly to the skin. It can be a dot applique, or it can be a single strip.

“Dana Spot-on” for dogs: this is what the instructions look like

When applying the product, it is very important to follow the dosage recommended by veterinarians and manufacturers of the drug. Let's see what it will be like in the table below.

Table. Recommended dosage of the drug "Dana Spot-on"

KilogramsDosage
The weight of the animal is less than 10 kilogramsOne pipette (one pipette contains 1.5 milliliters)
The pet weighs from 10 to 20 kilogramsTwo pipettes or 3 milliliters
The weight of the animal is 20-40 kilogramsThree pipettes or 4.5 milliliters
The dog weighs more than 40 kilogramsFor an animal of this weight you will need 4 pipettes or 6 milliliters

Provided that such a need arises, the procedure can be repeated. However, according to safety precautions, it should be repeated no earlier than 30 days from the date of first application. Otherwise, undesirable side effects may develop, since the insectoacaricide is a poison and is just as dangerous for animals as it is for ectoparasites.

Please note: even if you kill all fleas or other parasites on your pet's body, their eggs and larvae may still survive in your pet's bedding.

Spray "Dana" is suitable for treating bedding

This means that it needs to be processed too. Dana spray is perfect for this. However, it doesn’t hurt to pre-wash the contaminated litter. In this case, protection against parasites will be provided for a period of approximately 2 months.

If you need to remove an ixodid tick from an animal’s body that has already attached itself to it, do this.

  1. Apply a few drops of Dana to the site where it penetrates the skin and wait half an hour.
  2. After half an hour, the tick will either fall off on its own, or you can unscrew it very carefully with tweezers. The most important thing to avoid is tearing off the head of the pest and getting it stuck in the skin.

If you are fighting demodex mites that have infected the ears of an animal, you must follow the instructions below.

  1. Clean the ears with a special product or antiseptic to remove accumulated secretions, dirt and fallen hairs.
  2. Place approximately 3-5 drops of the product into each ear.
  3. Massage the dog's ear at the base on both sides, as if folding it in half.

Dana drops also help with demodicosis, otodectosis, etc.

Provided that the damage to microscopic mites has occurred in other areas of the body, apply the product to the affected areas and distribute it evenly. To avoid licking the drug, put a muzzle on the animal.

Contraindications and side effects

Side effects are observed only in case of individual intolerance.

In case of an overdose, the dog may feel sick and have tremors in the limbs.

With a significant overdose of the drug, the animal develops symptoms:

  • nausea, vomiting;
  • tremor;
  • active salivation and sweating, lacrimation;
  • uncoordinated movements, unsteady gait;
  • excessive activity or depression;
  • redness, irritation of the skin.

If symptoms of an overdose or an allergic reaction occur, the drug is immediately washed off with plenty of warm water and measures are taken to cleanse the body.

The drug is not used:

  • simultaneously with other insectoacaricidal drugs;
  • during pregnancy, lactation, illness;
  • in cases of exhaustion of the animal.

Side effects

Side effects, judging by the reviews, are extremely rare with the correct dosage. But if the dose is exceeded or used to treat sick animals, the following signs may appear:

  • increased salivation;
  • allergic reactions;
  • lacrimation;
  • shiver.

Dana drops will help get rid of parasites quickly. However, in any case, before the first use, it is necessary to contact a veterinarian, who will determine the exact dosage and possibility of using the product.

Personal precautions and storage conditions

Dan drops are classified as low-toxic drugs that are conditionally dangerous to humans.

When using, precautions should be taken:

  • do not allow the drug to come into contact with exposed skin, eyes, mucous membranes of the nose, mouth;
  • refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking when working with the drug;
  • do not pet the animal or allow it to come into contact with children for 24 hours after treatment;

  • observe shelf life (no more than 2 years from the date of issue);
  • empty packaging is disposed of together with household waste, pre-packed in a plastic bag;
  • If you have symptoms of poisoning (nausea, vomiting, headaches, tremors of the limbs, redness and itching of the skin), consult a doctor immediately; you should have the instructions for the drug with you.

It is very important to take some precautions when using drops.

Important. The drug is toxic to bees, small mammals (except cats), birds, and inhabitants of water bodies.

How to apply drops correctly

It is important to choose the correct dosage of Dan Ultra taking into account the cat’s weight. Then you need to inspect the withers for damage or moisture. If everything is in order with the skin, then the foil layer is torn off from the pipette, while keeping it in a vertical position.

You can fix the pet (using your hands or feet), and spread the fur with your fingers to form a skin path. After this, drops are applied until the pipette is completely empty. An oil stain may be present at the treatment site for 1–3 days.

Dana ultra drops are suitable for treating kittens. They are allowed to be used from 10 weeks after birth.

The drug should not be applied to wet skin with wounds or inflamed areas. Do not bathe your cat in open water or wash it with detergent for 2 days after applying the drops. Also, you should not let your pet outside on a sunny day after the procedure.

Reviews from dog breeders

Yana. Previously, we had never heard of ticks. But more and more often I began to learn from fellow dog lovers about the infection and even death of dogs. We treated our terrier with Dana Ultra drops. It’s convenient to drip; ticks were found after treatment, but only dead ones.

Ramil. Last year I used a different product. Fat marks appeared on the dog, and the hair came out. I decided to change the drug. According to the instructions, it turns out that Dana is less toxic than imported products. Although it does not give a 100% guarantee. We tried to dig it in: there were no stains, the hair didn’t come out, the ticks were dead, the fleas were gone. I will repeat it in a month.

Olga. I read that Dana is one of the most harmless drugs. The dog is small, there is a fear of overdose. Over the summer they dripped three times. The ticks were removed, but there were no signs of infection.
